Starry Night Skies
Katrina walked up the long steps to the Astronomy tour. Her bare feet frozen on the concrete floors. Boomerang stayed at her side, his little paws slapping on the cold stone. Katrina tuck a strand of her newly teal-dyed hair behind her ear. Over one shoulder, a fuzzy grey blanket trailed behind her. The image reminded her of Linus from Peanuts. In the other hand, Katrina had a cup of piping-hot mint tea. She reached the door to Astronomy and pushed it open.
Katrina's heart thumped loudly in her chest and echoed in her ears. At first glance, no one was present. Katrina made her way up the stairs in the side of the room and sat down in a vacant corner. She tucked the blanket around herself. Katrina took a long drink of the tea and looked up at the sky.
The stars shown bright in the dark sky. The sun dipped below the horizon and the sky darkened. Katrina drew out her journal and a few pens. Boomerang curled up in her lab and began to purr in his sleep. She began to chart the sky, starting with the stars in the West above the mountains and worked her way counter-clockwise. Each star was labeled in her small loopy handwriting.
She spent the time to mark the constellations together. Katrina felt joy in her work. She didn't notice any other noises. Or the sound of the door opening.

Starry Night Skies
Amy was distraught. She'd never been away from her family , and to say it was hitting her hard was to say the least. She sniffled and felt the twist of sadness deep in her chest, and knew the dam was just about to break. Shuffling feet could be heard as she ran down the corridors, a few people asked if she was alright as she passed by them, but of course she was in no mood to answer.
Stopping at a door, she eased it open silently and moved further into the room. She was hurt, everyone said going to Hogwarts was a tradition, a great thing in her family. This felt more like a punishment. Moving up a flight of stairs and into what she thought was outer space, she sat down in a chair and crossed her arms, during her head in them and letting out quiet sobs.
Was this a punishment? She'd thought the tears that stained her mothers face were tears of joy, had she been wrong? Recalling the last minutes up to boarding the train, her family hadn't seemed sad from what she remembered. Her brother John had already made his way back to the school so it meant she'd ride the train alone. "Remember, magic is believing in yourself. If you can do that, you can make anything happen" Her mother had said as she bid her farewell, and until now she believed her. I'm just a child she thought. I can barely function with regular homework how on earth will I function with magical homework? Another sob wracked Amy's body and she sniffled loudly, not even realizing another presence in the room.

Katrina was snapped out of her work when a girl raced up crying. She sat herself down on a chair and wept openly. She muttered something to herself, oblivious that Katrina was even in there. Katrina quickly went over to her. She sat herself beside the girl. "Sometimes you need to take a breath, become a blanket-burrito, pet your cat, and drink some tea."
Katrina draped the fuzzy blanket over the girl. She scooped Boomerang from the curled form on the ground and plopped him in her lap, he melted and put his furry kitten head on her lap. "Are you alright?" she paused and let the girl compose herself.
"I am Katrina Walker" she gave the girl some time. It was sad to see someone so sad here. She took a breath before saying anything else. You never wanted to rush someone that was so distraught. Katrina took her journal and continued working on it, sometimes just a change of topic was all that someone needed. She looked up and the large expanse of the sky in wonder. It was crazy that out of all of that, our problems still seemed so massive.
Katrina closed the journal and slipped it into the leather satchel hanging at her side. The room was barely cold and a small draft blew through the room. Katrina tucked the blanket closer to them. It was odd that she went from such a closed off and alone person to consoling someone else.
She had been so alone the first year here. It was really the horrors of the Masked Ball that incited Katrina to do something and stand up for herself. From there she had the initiative to do something more. That is what led to her giving all of the gifts at Christmas time, and even spending the Christmas alone. It was the hardest thing she had to do since her parents were gone. Everyone already knew her because of that fateful letter last March, saying that her parents had perished in a fire. Now, that even lead Katrina to dye some of her hair. She did that today just on a whim. It was crazy how things were changing.
Katrina looked the girl in the eyes. "Do you want to talk? It is alright if you don't,"

Still sobbing, Amy didn't hear the footsteps that approached her, so she jumped slightly when she heard the voice of another female. Trying to compose herself, she lifted her head and looked at her lap, a a fuzzy kitten curled up onto her. She gave a small smile and looked up at the girl with tear stained eyes.
"Are you alright?" the girl had asked her, and Amy went to answer but gave nothing more then a small sob. She lowered her eyes and listened as the girl introduced herself as Katrina. Could she open up to this girl? Or would she judge? Amy pondered over opening up until Katrina spoke again saying "Do you want to talk? It is alright if you don't " Oh what the heck Amy thought, raising her gaze once more and began to speak.
"I-I" Her lip quivered and she took a deep breath, more tears forming in her eyes and threatening to spill over. "I miss my family. I have never been away from them this long, and I'm worried. My father, " She paused again.
"My father is my best friend. He's always so proud of me, you would think with him having two sons they'd be his favorite but they're not. And what if I don't fit in? What if I can't learn the spells or fly a broom ? What if= what if I disappoint him. He'd never forgive me if they send me home, I'd be the only one in our family who didn't graduate"

Starry Night Skies
@Amy HayesSo she was nervous about leaving her family. It was kind of odd that she was worried this late in the year and Katrina was curious if she started late. It was pretty late in the year already but Katrina didn't say anything, not wanting to upset her further. It was possible that returning to her parents for the winter had set of some homesickness.
Katrina new the pang of homesickness. The apprehension to try anything new. The depression and anxiety. It had all been so overwhelming the last year. Making friends had helped with it though. Katrina found it helpful to journal and to write letters. Katrina began to think of all of the things that helped her cope.
"You know everything will be alright. I can make sure you fit in. You won't be sent home. Flying a broom isn't something big-- I can hardly stay on it! You can still stay in contact with your father you know." Katrina gave her a moment to think things over as she composed herself. She knew how hard it was and didn't want to push the girl too far.
Katrina thought of things that helped her so she could share, "I always hold pictures of home on this locket," she pulled out the charm on her next and opened it. On one side was a silly picture of her brother. The other was a family portrait with her parents. Katrina's parents had dyed in a fire last March, she knew now was not the time to bring it up though.
"When I feel super homesick, I write letters. I know my brother won't get them, but I pour everything into them. How I am feeling, everything I'm worried about, things that would make him smile, things that made me cry. Everything." Katrina thought back to all of the times that she had sat at the Gryffindor common room table and poured out her heart onto the paper. All of the times she had cried sending out the letter in the owlery.
"One of the huge things I have learned is to take care of yourself. Don't let the worry keep you from living your life. It is hard, I know. Eat good food, get quality sleep, and talk to people. It is hard-- but it is so worth it." That was one of the things Katrina was working on currently. Finding a balance between schoolwork and leisure. It was hard not to be consumed by everything.
