How High?
Saturday | 16 January 2021 | Close to curfew
The time had finally come! After months of contemplation and calculations and research - things that Aaron never normally did outside of the required school work - it was time to put it all to the test! He was soaring through the air at this very moment, and the sting of the cold air on his face was making it a bit hard to concentrate on the task ahead. Instead, he just focused on making it to the Astronomy tower for now. His Moontrimmer was as responsive as ever and he landed on the roof of the tower with ease. He was sure this was against the school rules, but he only needed about ten or fifteen minutes to do what he needed.
Right now he was bundled up in his winter cloak, earmuffs, a scarf and mittens. It was a cold night - as Scotland tended to be in January - so he had prepared accordingly. However, these items could not all come with him during the test. He had to be as aerodynamic as possible if he wanted to get this done quickly. If he was caught up here, he'd be in trouble, but if it was after curfew, he'd be in double trouble. So he was determined to at least finish this before curfew.
How high could he go? That was the question Aaron needed answers to tonight. How high before it got too cold? How high before his broom stopped responding? Could he get high enough that it actually became difficult to breathe? This broom - Aaron's beloved Moontrimmer - was supposed to be able to go higher than any other like it. Sure, it wasn't the newest model of broom out there, but most brooms were made to go fast. This one was made specifically with height in mind, and Aaron wanted to test its capabilities. He and his friend Sylvain had been discussing it for months on-and-off. The possibility of brooms reaching space. Reaching the moon! It was a question Aaron needed answers to, and he would get some of those answers tonight! Of course he didn't expect to reach space, but he wanted to test his and his broom's capabilities!
So he shed his winter cloak, revealing his much more aerodynamic Quidditch uniform. It was not nearly as warm, and Aaron shivered as the wind cut at him. Right. It was time to do this. This tower was the tallest tower at Hogwarts (or so he believed) so this would give him the best "running start" at reaching an insane height. He mounted his broom and tried to focus on the moon rather than the cold. The moon tonight was hardly a crescent - there had been a new moon a few days ago - but it was still bright against the dark star-spattered sky. Aaron would use the moon as his guide. It was the perfect angle from his starting place. He would push off from this spot at maximum speed and he would go higher than he ever had before!
But then- Aaron heard something. Or someone. So he hesitated, his brown eyes looking left, right and below for the source of the noise.
---
Just before Aaron had taken off from the school grounds to reach the Astronomy tower, a beautiful snowy owl delivered a note to @Sylvain Wyllt in the Ravenclaw Tower:
Hey Syl, thanks for all the astronomy talk we've had over the last few months! I think I'm finally gonna put some of our theory to test tonight! I'll take off from the Astronomy tower and see how high I can get and at what angles and when it gets hard to breathe and stuff. I'll make lots of notes and show you tomorrow! See you then! Aaron P.S. I'll try to finish before curfew, so don't worry! Also, this is Chae! She's the owl I told you I got over winter break! Isn't she awesome?!

Months of research had been poured into this rather pointless project of theirs. It was evident after even minimal research that there was absolutely no way Sylvain was going to get Aaron anywhere near the moon any time soon. Did that stop either of the wannabe-wiztronauts from trying their hardest? You bet your bottom galleon it didn't. Sylvain frantically gobbled up every bit of information available, and managed to do so in between his studies. Broom enchantments, the velocity needed to exit orbit, the amount of time it would take to actually reach the moon. All parts of a grander scheme to reach the stars and claim them for himself, or rather for his friend.
Aaron may not have been as bright as Sylvain, but what he lacked in book smarts he made up in the purest kind of motivation. Anticipation and excitement. With every clue they unlocked, Sylvain's understanding broadened and Aaron's excitement propelled him further and further. He was happy to let the eager badger keep pushing him because the more time he spent with him, the less foolish researching for fun felt. It wasn't until he was resting in the dorms, settling in for a bit of a distraction, that Aaron's owl delivered the letter. At first Sylvain smiled. It was charming that Aaron thought to send him a letter, but around the time his brain registered what his eyes caught, it felt as though his heart lept from the Astronomy tower.
Hastily, the prefect tossed the letter on his bed and sped off with nothing but his wand in hand. There was so very little time to think and what time he spent on thoughts were wasted on worries as he dashed up the few flights of stairs between himself and his friend's almost certain demise. If Aaron tried to do this and flew solo, there was a good chance he would get seriously wounded or worse. The risk was too high for so little gain, and although the duo's magic was strong, nature presented its challenges for a reason. Aaron was hardly prepared for the worst and Sylvain did not expect the best to come from it.
Admiring the bravery of the Huffle's actions, but admonishing the foolhardiness of his gambit, Sylvain rammed into the astronomy tower door full force... Only to be easily rebuffed by its powerful enchantments and lock. He was not strong enough on his own, but he was quick thinking. Striding over to the window, Sylvain poked his head out and to the side. As Aaron backed up, apparently gathering distance to reach maximum velocity on foot as they planned in their discussions, the moon glowed but only faintly on his features. The determination in his eyes was clear to Sylvain. It only served to fuel the rapid beat of his terrified chest. He had to stop his friend from making a huge mistake.
"AARON JONES," he yelled, fighting to be heard over the wind. "YOU GET DOWN FROM THERE RIGHT THIS SECOND OR SO HELP ME I'LL SEND YOU TO THE MOON MYSELF!" He leveled his wand at the student. Although he didn't know any spells to stop him he hoped the bluff worked.

Aaron was taken aback when he noticed his friend was down below and pointing a wand at him. What was happening? The young boy's instinct was to drop his broom and raise his hands, which he almost did. The second before the broom rolled off his fingers, Aaron had the sense of mind to grip the broom handle more tightly than before. If he dropped his broom right now, it would roll off the roof and go plummeting towards the ground!
Instead, Aaron gripped the broom with one hand and raised his other hand. "WHAT'S THE PROBLEM?!" he called out, confusion etched all over his face. For once, he was not sporting an infectious smile, he looked troubled. And cold. A shiver traveled down his spine as another gust of wind traveled through the area.
Hopefully having made it clear to Sylvain that he wasn't about to do anything rash, Aaron slowly lowered his raised arm and walked to the edge of the tower roof, so that he could properly speak to Sylvain. In fact, he took a seat on the edge, his feet dangling over the empty air. Anyone with a fear of heights would not do such a thing, so it was good the broom clutched in one of his hands set him at ease when up high like this. Plus he didn't look down at the ground below, he looked at Sylvain.
"If you wanted to join, you didn't have to threaten me with your wand, bud," Aaron said, a slight grin on his face as he looked down at his friend. Of course, he could sense there was something else behind Sylvain's expression in that moment, but he was trying to use humor to perhaps distract. He had not anticipated being caught by the boy - he thought he would read his letter and think he was joking perhaps. Or that he'd at least have the time to carry out his experiment and his results would prove valuable to Sylvain and distract from the broken rules. Aaron knew Syl was a prefect, but he hadn't considered before this moment that he would harshly object.

When Aaron's hand gripped his broom all the tighter, Sylvain's wand arm grew just as steady. "I swear on Merlin, Aaron, if you don't come down from that roof right now we're both going to get in trouble." Now was no time for jokes. Not while one of them could get seriously hurt. Plus, his own rash decision to charge the astronomy tower's door already felt like it was going to bruise his shoulder. The way Sylvain saw it, the new Astronomy professor would be upon them any moment. Yet Aaron still just walked over and sat on the ledge amidst the stand off, cool as a cucumber.
Still leaning out of the window, one arm bracing himself and the other pointing his wand at his friend out of fear, he spoke up. "It's not a threat," Sylvain said, "it's a bluff. I don't know any spells to send you to the moon." He sighed as he withdrew his wand, clearly upset by his friend teasing him but unsure what he should do about it. All he wanted was for Aaron to take him seriously and to keep himself safe but he had clearly gone the wrong way about it. He would have to be more convincing. He would threaten to jump too if that's what it took to get Aaron to back down, but he would plead once more first.
As his head bobbed back in the window to guide his wand to his side, there was a brief moment where he glimpsed the ground far below the two. On second thought, jumping was a fool's errand. Aaron's Moontrimmer would keep him safe if he fell, but what about Syl? If he fell, there would be so little to stop him from plummeting towards the ground that the idea made his stomach turn. Gut wrenched into a knot, Sylvain peeked out the window just barely, his eyes pathetic and pained. "Aaron, please. I'm begging you. Stop what you're doing and see reason. Let's be done with this now. Won't you please come off the roof?"

Humor had been the wrong move. Aaron quickly realized this as Sylvain's frustration oozed in his direction. As the prefect lowered his wand and said he had no spells to send him to the moon, Aaron's eyes lit up slightly. A spell! Why wasn't there a spell to go to the moon? The last time he had considered inventing a spell had been when he and Dee had discussed an instant translator spell, but a moon transport spell would be way cooler. As his mind worked a mile a minute, Sylvain's movement out the corner of his eye caught his attention and he was once again distracted. The life of a boy with a short attention span.
Syl was looking at him with a pleading expression - begging him to get down. Maybe Aaron should just back down for now, and then try again later when Syl wasn't there to worry about him. Or maybe he really shouldn't do it at all. Sylvain was really smart, and he was clearly concerned for a reason - though he had yet to explain why. Aaron had intended to take all the necessary safety precautions, and it's not like he would go up until he couldn't breathe.
"But, Syl-" Aaron's eyes glanced at the pocket watch he had borrowed from one of his dormmates, and his eyes widened slightly at the time. It was almost curfew.
"Oh," he said, and he could see his breath in the cold air. Another shiver and Aaron got back to his feet and grabbed his winter cloak, stuffing his arms through the sleeves for warmth and passing the broom between his hands as he did so. "Fine, I'll get down and we should hurry back to our dorms, but I really think that tomorrow we should-"
As he spoke, Aaron's brown eyes lifted from his task of putting on the cloak and he looked at the window that Syl was talking out of. But he froze in his task when he saw there was a figure behind Sylvain. Aaron's words were lost in his throat and he gaped slightly at the intimidating figure of their Astronomy professor approaching. Aaron still being on the roof with a broom in hand would not bode well for them.
For a split second, Aaron imagined it. Grabbing Sylvain's hand through the window and leaping from the roof, flying to safety to escape getting caught. But as quickly as the thought entered his mind, it left. No way would a Hogwarts professor be so easily avoided. And he really didn't think Sylvain would have the reflexes necessary to pull off such a move. Best to try to talk their way out of this - if that was even an option. The moment he felt the cold of the Astronomy professor's presence wash over him, Aaron had pretty much resigned himself to detention. Sylvain would likely be excused from such a fate given he wasn't doing anything wrong, but Aaron had to hope he'd get the chance to explain.

How High?
Terrible Presence in effect.
| Aura of Unease Present |The new professor was indeed going to be teaching tonight, as he usually did. His classes were mostly at night, partly because it permitted the class to look at the stars if they were going over that portion of Astronomy, and partially because Leonardo had never been one to adapt quickly with a sleep-schedule. On his shoulder was Macbeth, the red Eastern Screech owl that accompanied him at every turn, perhaps the only being that he had tolerance for in this school so far.
Since the night tended to be quiet, there tended to be no noise to speak of, no interruptions save for a prefect that would come to retrieve the students from their classes and escort them to and from their house dormitories. These nights were refreshing, even if Leonardo was being forced to teach and endure the student population while attempting to enjoy the nighttime peace and quiet. He was enjoying his last few moments of freedom from the student body
Tonight was the extracurricular upperclassman classes. These students were more well behaved than their younger counterparts. They had more time to grow and mature; yet some of them carried very distinct ways of thinking. Distinct ways of thinking were difficult to teach around, especially if the students were particularly stubborn. Perhaps, however, there would none of that tonight, and Leonardo’s lectures for the sixth and seventh years would occur without a hitch.
Surely disaster would be approaching at any given moment. A mundane vision flashed before his eyes; the thunderous sound of a door being rammed into as it visibly quaked with the force of such a blow.
The sound of a heavy collision on the Astronomy door caused Leonardo’s grey eyes to flare with sudden analytical assessment as the vision occurred like deja vu. It was too early for the prefect to arrive. There was still about two hours until the first class would arrive. It could not be a student, for those who did not have class would be assigned back to their dormitories and would soon be breaking curfew if they were not making haste towards them at this very moment. A fellow professor or Head of House would not have been so foolish as to ram themselves into the door. They hold have asked permission for entry or announced themselves like a rational human being.
Leonardo wasted no time, and the door was swiftly unlocked and opened, the shadow of the Astronomy teacher filling the doorway and creeping into the torchlit hall. Eyes were adjusting to the dark, but the gleaming length of chestnut wood was unsheathed and prepared to cast, held in a duelist’s steady hand. The trespasser now had the full attention of the Astronomy Professor, and the chilling aura that emanated from him as well.
It was a child. Younger. Underclassman, perhaps. Leonardo couldn’t quite make out features yet. They were leaning out of a slit window, seemingly looking upwards at something. Their foolish position was as if they were seeking a death wish; they could fall if they leaned outwards too far. It was not until he ventured directly behind the unwitting individual that he spoke.
“And what may you be doing like this mere minutes before curfew?” His low voice rumbled in the area alongside the quivering shadows of the nearby torches. “Aiming perhaps to find yourself some trouble? Congratulations, you accomplished that much.” His eyes narrowed a touch before they caught on movement outside the window just overhead. Another individual.
“And I suppose the same question may be poised to you as well.” He muttered, recognizing the body shape of a student, though not the misty, featureless face. “I do hope you have very good explanations for breaking curfew, and carrying with you a broom outside the confines of the Quidditch pitch. Last I recalled, I did not teach Flying classes.”
Macbeth twittered brightly, not seeming to recognize the tenseness of the situation at hand, but Leonardo’s wand was still pointed, held between the two individuals. He had practice with twinning his spells. This would not be too much extension of his skills, if he managed to play his hand correctly. “Names. Houses. And you,” Leonardo’s glare flicked to the boy on the roof. “come down here immediately.”Congratulations being my first patrol victims. Two counts have been broken:
Aaron: As a student, you have no excuse.
- 3. You may not be outside of your commons rooms after 10:00 pm 8:00 pm without permission.
- 23. No usage of Broomsticks outside of the Quidditch Pitch.
Sylvain: As a Prefect, you may have a chance to defend yourself. However, you are currently being considered:
- Guilty by Association / lack of meaningful action
- Disturbing the Peace (By ramming into the Astronomy Door / possible attempt of rule #17 [No damage to school property.])
Aka. Probably both of you will be getting detention.Reducio@Sylvian Wyllt & @Aaron Jones

There was a moment of shock, as the air seemingly grew colder and Aaron's face froze in horror. What was going on??? Swiveling around to face the source of the atmospheric dread head on, Sylvain whimpered in dismay as Professor Chiadovini loomed behind him. This was exactly what he was trying to prevent. A confrontation leading to certain punishment. Maybe there was still time to explain the circumstances. Maybe he could convince the Professor that....
Frack. They were royally doomed. They were in trouble without even a chance to defend themselves. How was he supposed to explain, calmly, that this was all Aaron's fault without getting him into further trouble. Then he supposed, it wasn't all Aaron's fault. He was the one that suggested they practice from atop the tower in the first place."Aiming perhaps to find yourself some trouble? Congratulations, you accomplished that much.”
He took a big gulp before he spoke, the fear making his eyes wide and his fingers weak. He felt very much as though he'd lost finer motor control. "Sylvain Wyllt," he gasped out, finally catching his breath. "Prefect of Ravenclaw." The professor hadn't asked for his status as a prefect, but it was a badge of honor, one that might help explain the situation a little more clearly and explain his presence so near to curfew.“Names. Houses. And you,” Leonardo’s glare flicked to the boy on the roof. “come down here immediately.”
Honesty was indeed the best policy, he would spill the beans as the lights flickered and Macbeth cooed. Mercy was not expected, but he wasn't going to act helpless about it. "I-." An apology was warranted for the door at the least. "I'm sorry about running into the door, I was in a hurry and forgot you were still holding classes." He took another gulp, and backed away from the window.
The height seemed much less terrifying now that Professor Chiadovini was standing in front of him, but he still wasn't taking any chances.
"Aaron and I have been researching space travel," he began, his fingers finding their way behind his back. Nervous fidgeting doing what it could to keep him from freaking out. "We wanted to be the first wizards to reach the moon." It sounded stupid now that he said it out loud. Sure, it had been a fun project. An easy way to pass the time and an excuse to spend time with Aaron, but it wasn't very realistic to think two twelve-year-olds would reach the moon any time this decade. Nor was it very smart to suggest jumping from the Astronomy tower.
Twisting the back of his robe into a knot, Sylvain continued to frantically explain. "We-" he began, quickly corrected himself, "I, thought that maybe if we increased the elevation of our initial trajectory we might be able to achieve enough lift to leave the atmosphere." He looked up to Professor Chiadovini who told them to follow their stars, or rather their signs, pleading as best he could for forgiveness. "If anything, it's my fault for suggesting we try it out in the first place. Please don't punish Aaron."

How High?
Aaron remained frozen in shock at the appearance of their Astronomy professor as he spoke of being out minutes before curfew. The man was entirely correct, of course. They were just a minute or two out from officially breaking the well-known school curfew, and the fact that Aaron was standing there with a broom in hand indicated they were up to no good. Or that at least Aaron was. The man only seemed to register Aaron's presence a minute after Sylvain's, at which point he demanded that the Hufflepuff get down. A reasonable request.
Aaron was careful in his transition from the rooftop to the window, and he was soon standing beside Sylvain. This position was much, much worse. If he thought their Astronomy professor had been terrifying from a few feet away, this new proximity was a whole new level. Why was it that even in class when they were meant to be learning, Aaron still got this cold vibe from the man? He thought maybe it was because he was usually tired during Astronomy, but here he was wide awake and attentive, but still feeling like he could hardly breathe without getting into more trouble.
"I'm Aaron Jones, a second-year Hufflepuff," Aaron said, after Sylvain rattled off his own name and house. Professor Chiadovini seemed quite upset, and understandably so. He spoke of needing to have a good explanation why they were almost breaking curfew and why Aaron was holding a broom. The young twelve-year-old's heart was pounding at the realization that they were in deep trouble.
"R-Right, uh-" before Aaron could get through his own explanation, Sylvain beat him to the punch. Aaron gripped his broom tightly as Sylvain explained about their research on space travel. As his heart pounded, all he could think about was avoiding getting kicked off the Quidditch team and/or having his broom confiscated. Well, having it confiscated wouldn't be the worst thing, as long as he was allowed to use it for practice and games. Aaron's attention went from worrying to shock, though, when he heard the next words from Sylvain claiming responsibility.
"No, no, that's not true," Aaron blurted out, shocked by what Sylvain was saying. "I mean, the space travel stuff is true, sir," he said, properly turning his brown eyes onto the professor for the first time since getting busted. "But I was the one who actually thought to try and carry it out. I mean - Sylvain showed up here trying to stop me after I sent him a letter telling him my plans - so it was me who was actually going to do it. He was just doing his prefectly duties by stopping me," Aaron said. His voice was actually normal, even though he initially thought it might come out shaking. "I am sorry, sir, and I know I shouldn't have tried it, and I'll accept whatever the punishment is, but I don't think Sylvain should be punished."

Terrible Presence in effect.
| Aura of Unease Present |It seemed that both students were prepared to comply, fortunate for them. The Seer would not have been happy if he had been forced to detour to the hospital wing to interface with the nurse and explain why he had injured students in his care after curfew.
One was a student and a Quidditch player at that. The other was a Perfect.
How... unfortunate. That would indeed explain the presence and the use of a broom which seemed more than a simple school's inventory. Pale eyes glared at the Perfect, Sylvain, and Leonardo's fingers lightly rapped on the top of his other hand which was holding the head of the canesword. The first wizards to reach the moon, eh?
“I will not be one to claim that I am not... disappointed in your ambitions. Your thoughts and inventiveness to overcome a problem is indeed something which is to always be encouraged." He confessed first. “It is your timing, however, and your apparent lack of understanding how dangerous an experiment such as this can be without adult supervision which should be the cause of concern." Cleverly, the professor did not share if he himself was concerned with such actions...
He was being surprisingly collected in this conversation.
The students began to defend one another, and for a few moments the Seer considered his options whilst closing his eyes. A pregnant silence was in the air, cut only by Macbeth flitting over to Aaron as he would enter the tower once more, before the Professor nodded slowly.... With an uncharacteristic, dry chuckle.
“Aha... I see... I am sure I can come to some... arrangement." A sly curl formed as he nodded to himself. Yes. Yes that would be perfect. A perfect lesson...
Snapping his gaze back to the children, Leonardo's expression turned severe again. He slammed the tip of his cane on the ground so that a loud CRACK filles the corridor. “Partners in crime you are, partners in repentance you shall be. Expect an owl soon. Prefect, return Mister Jones to his dormitory and then return to your duties if any." The Seer glares at the boy who had been on the roof specifically. “I should suspend your player's rights."
He muttered warningly. “Fortunately for you, I have classes to teach and much more on my mind than to add a request for your Head of House on top of them."
A moment longer and the Professor pushed past them both without a word to reach his classroom once more. His energy for such things had been drained.
The situation had been taken care of.

So that was it then? They were both going down for it? At least nobody had gotten hurt and Professor Chiadovini was walking in the other direction now. There was a tug at Syl's stomach, either the weight of the events finally coming to full bear or a bit of a sob coming on. Either way, he would wait until he was in bed to cry. Right now, he felt as though he should listen to the Professor's strict orders to take Aaron back to his dorm and finish up his responsibilities before they could get into any more trouble. "Come on Aaron, you heard the Professor," Syl said, doing his best to be both a teacher's pet and a good example for the other boy to follow. "And we'd best get going before he changes his mind and gets you kicked off the team." He would put his arm out and motion back down the stairs the way he had come in haste.
If it wasn't clear already, the lad would smile in an effort to show he held no resentment in his heart for Aaron's actions. If anything, the only resentment left was for his own overenthusiastic attempt to stop him. Clearly he should've been more discrete in his efforts. It had been made all too obvious that the astronomy professor was not a fan of being bothered. As soon as they were out of earshot, Syl would stop ruminating in his thoughts and pipe up in hopes that the two could still be friends, and perhaps even salvage something from the night. "Sorry for all of that," Syl said, still hoarding all the blame for his own. "Impressive flying though. I'm glad he wasn't as determined to get you kicked off of the team as he was to give us both detention." His smile broadened.
"Just think of the bragging rights as well." He put his arm out and waved as though he were illuminating the title of a Broadway production. "Aaron Jones, the Chaser who dared to land on the Astronomy Tower." He chuckled a little bit at the prospect of Aaron's name in the big lights while letting go of his resentment. Only a fool would come knocking at the astronomy door again anytime soon. Syl desperately tried not to be a fool when he could help it but on second thought, maybe trying too hard was a bit foolish too. "I only have one request," he started with a slightly more serious tone, but still intent on being playful and optimistic. "When you do make it big, tell me in person and not by owl."
