Look at all the pretty stones
Whispers of an activity in the Great Hall had reached my ears all the way in the library where I was currently doing Potions homework. However with all the talk I was currently hearing about what is going on in the Great Hall; I felt that I couldn't pass it up. Besides I've been doing homework all day…I need a rest; what better kind of rest than to do something fun.
I gathered up all my school supplies neatly into my book bag; normally I would have taken my school bag back to my dorm before checking anything out not school related but something inside told me not too. Therefore; with my bag on my back; I headed for the Great Hall…now the whispers I'd heard had something to do with sweets. When I'm studying or rather reading; I get lost in my own little world therefore I only heard small bits and pieces of what people around me was talking about.
The moment I entered the Great Hall I was astonished and very glad I took the time to come check it out. Decorating sweets; oh what fun…I used to help my grandma with her deserts all the time. It didn't take too long for me to get set up at a table with all the deserts I would decorate and everything surrounding me I could use to do so. With what I already have in mind the only issue I am having is that I can do not have use of a stove; however I think I will be able to make do with my cauldron.
Before even getting started with any of the deserts I took out some parchment, my quill and ink sat at the corner of the table to plan everything out. My family always told me that I was too much of a planner but I believed that there was no such thing as planning too much. Okay sure I had been packed for a month before coming to Hogwarts; is that such a bad thing? As I looked at everything provided along the table details in my mind seemed to fall into place on paper.
Of the already made deserts I could see; cupcakes of various flavors {chocolate, vanilla, strawberry and lemon}, sugar cookies, mini cakes {chocolate, vanilla, white, red velvet, spice, marble} and even marzipan. Thankfully my grandmother is very gifted in the world of deserts and had taught me everything she knows so the marzipan wasn't new to me. As I looked down the table I could see all sorts of cool flavor combinations to be made; sherbet lemon, matcha tea, orange dreamsicle, and so many others that I can't even think of them all right now. Alas; it seemed as though it took me forever when in reality it took no time at all; my planning was finished. Now all I had to do is organize and execute.
When it comes to organizing…well; lets just say that I am a bit over the top however when it comes to something such as this it is a good thing. I got my table all set up; my cauldron with everything that would need melting, the frosting I would prepare with different flavors, the minicakes, the cupcakes and all the yummy middles I would give them. Soon enough everything was prepared now all that was left was the execution part.
I put my hair up in a messy bun, removed my robe putting it with my book bag, put my wand in the back pocket of my jeans then got started. I put some water into my cauldron then set a metal bowl in the water creating a double broiler. This way I wouldn't have anything to clean from my cauldron except some water; the temperature of the water only consistently needed to be hot but not boiling per say.
Now if anyone is standing around watching me they might be currently wondering how on earth I plan to get any sort of heat to my cauldron. No; I do not yet know how to conjure fire. However thanks to my father; inside the secret compartment of my bookbag; sits a tea light candle, a book of matches and few other Muggle type things he told me to keep on hand just in case of an emergency. On the same token my mother and grandma charmed some of these items to make them a bit more witch friendly; the tea light candle for instance; they told me would never burn down. So yes this is what I used to heat up the cauldron.
The art of spinning sugar is one that I truly enjoy; with nothing but melted sugar you can make literately anything. Yes it is BEYOND messy…if; that is; you do not know what you are doing and simply thrash your whisk around willy nilly. Spinning sugar takes a nimble and delicate grace while also needing to be calm and determined. My grandma always told me; the tools in the kitchen is simply an extension of any baker's or chef's arm; it is with these tools, creativity, love for the craft and knowledge that creates the magic that people can eat.
I have always loved being in the kitchen creating edible magic with my grandma; I would have never thought that I'd be gracing the world with my own special brand of magic not long after coming to Hogwarts. This is neat; melting down various hard candies in order to make my own rock candies, making and mixing frosting into all sorts of flavors, using my imagination to come up with some amazing pieces of art.
By the time I got done I looked at my lovely display of edible art work with a proud smile. This had to have been some of the best work I have ever done and best of all I did it all by myself! My grandma would be so proud if she could see me right now; is it terrible I wish I had a camera. Oh well; I cleaned up my work station and prepared my goodies to be taken to the new Divination teacher. I'd heard that was a choice and I think these particular sweets would be better suited there.
