It was an early morning at Hogwarts. The air was crisp and cold outside, yet the hall felt warm due to the gently floating candles that surrounded the room. All four tables were filled with endless chatter of gossip, homework, and excitement like every other morning at Hogwarts. Children of all ages were stuffing their faces with the wondrous breakfast food that was supplied to them, and Ross was certainly not an exception.

The Hufflepuff normally sat on his own, if one could even call it that. It was in the middle of many other bustling children , but he had made sure to leave room for himself. There were a few spots around the boy, as it left him comfortable. He had not quite found a clique yet, yet he was looking for a group of friends. Even so, it was nice. He would occasionally join in on conversations around him. Ross was a morning person, so it was not much of an issue to wake up 'early.'

This morning he had gotten what he normally would. It was toast with pumpkin juice. It was a delicacy, no, a blessing in his opinion. It was just a good enough balance in his opinion, and something he believed he would never find himself tired of. He had just taken a crisp, final bite of the toast when the owls started flying overhead.

The delivery owls of course. They dropped letters from overhead every day. They usually came from home, and every day Ross had hoped he would receive one. he had not received word from his parents since he left for Hogwarts, and he craved to speak to them. He had a chance to meet them over winter break, yet he did not. He suckered out. He ran to some bookshop instead, and got on the first train back to Hogwarts. In his parents' defense, he had not written anything to them either. Every time he thought of something to write them , it blanked out of his mind. Or that was his excuse at least. Many of the people around him if they were to know what home life was like would likely wonder if he was alright, but Ross strongly believed his parents still cared. Even so, he no longer quite expected any messages to come through. The excitement died down day after day when the owls came.

And that was why he was dead surprised when a beautiful, spotted white owl swooped down and dropped a letter directly onto his plate and continued flying. As it clashed against the plate, it nearly hit his precious pumpkin juice. Ross quickly grabbed onto the goblet of pumpkin juice and picked it up, bringing it towards his chest, so it would not spill. He had not even quite processed what happened.

"OI! WATCH THE DRINK!" he exclaimed, looking up at the sky.

His mind had not quite processed what was happening yet. The Hufflepuff looked back and fourth before finally properly acknowledging the letter on his plate. It was a long blank stare for a moment.

A letter? For him?

He slowly and gently put him goblet back onto the tablet, and then moved his hand to the letter.

It was beautifully packaged. The stamp was beautifully melted on. It almost felt like a disgrace to open it.

Was this really his?

He took his time turning it to the back, in an excited and nervous sort of way as he felt his hands shake.

To Ross Stephens
From Callum and Margaret Stephens

his parents. of course.

Ross' eyes lit up for the first time in ages. His gentleness with the letter quickly turned into recklessness. He turned it back to the front, and tore the parchment out of its packaging. It was folded into three perfect pieces, and he would likely take time to admire it if he was not as excited as he was. He quickly opened it to the middle to read what the letter said.

2/21/20

Dearest Ross.

We have wonderful news for the family that must be shared! It has been quite quiet around the bakery. People come in and out, but often order the same. Mrs. Andel has been coming back to the shop, and has wondered where you were. We told them you were simply at boarding school, but that is not why we decided to send you a note.

You see, we're expecting to have a child. We have been considering this for quite some time, and have decided to go for another. We are currently on the right track, and we have discovered that it will likely be a girl. This is wonderful news, and she should be born in several months. Even so, we must set some ground rules for this.

First of all, you must never bring up that you are magic or show that you are magic around the baby. We do not want her getting tainted by you, so we find it in our best interest for you to be as normal as possible around her once she is born.

Second of all, you must not talk or play with the child without us in the room when it comes to it.

We will inform you more of these once you are to come home, but of course you need to understand this baby is to not get harmed.

This is wonderful news, and we are happy to share this with you. In the bottom of the packaging for this letter, you will find something your mother put in there as a gift.

Sincerely, your beloved parents.

Ross' chocolate brown eyes went over the note several times. He swore he was skimming it, but sure enough it was true.

He was getting a baby sister.

The boy was frozen. How was he supposed to feel? Happy? Having new family seemed wonderful. It was a new generation, even if it was eleven years apart from himself. Still at the same time he could not help but feel slightly hurt. He was not quite sure what it was, but perhaps he felt replaced. Yes, yes that was likely it. He felt replaced. The note seemed to make it clear that he was not to reveal his true self to the child, but he was convinced they still cared.

Most kids felt like they were being replaced anyways, right?

He attempted to brush it out of his mind, but it stayed. The thought stayed, and he was stuck staring at the note. What was he supposed to feel?

Emotion stirred inside his heart, but he still had no clue what to think. The entire thought took so long to set in, he had not even quite comprehended the last part until he reread it multiple times.

A gift? At the bottom of the packaging?

The Hufflepuff placed the parchment gently back onto his plate, and picked the packaging up in exchange for it. He supposed they weren't lying. It did still feel as if something was still in it. The boy reached his long fingers into it, and felt a cold metal surface touch his pale hands. He gently pulled it out and pulling it up to his eye.

A ring.
A ring with a sheep face on it.

He moved it around in his fingers, getting a feel for it. He looked at his left hand, and gently slid it onto his pointer finger.

It fit like a glove.

He put the envelope back down, and then stared at the letter. He had not quite noticed it, but he himself was shaking. The letter gave him a bad taste in his mouth, yet he refused to cry. He was supposed to be happy, not sad. Still, if anyone were to notice they would clearly see something was wrong. He just stared and stared, unable to comprehend what just happened.

Honestly, if Hazel had to pick a favorite time of day, it was likely the morning. It was most preferable because it was quiet and gentle throughout the castle corridors. Sure, there were the ghosts gallivanting about (and she wasn't sure she'd ever really get used to the cold feeling of a ghost rushing through her) and the maintenance castle noises, but there were usually no students up until the sun had already turned the sky blue. And there wasn't anything wrong with that - Hazel could hardly find it in herself to get up after astronomy class the night before. But being able to get up with the sun and traipse around the castle halls and staircases without the cacophony of student bustle was...bliss.

Unfortunately, Hazel found herself waking up on the late side this particular morning; the great hall was already full of students by the time she made her way through the massive doors. No matter; she had slept rather well last night, so it wasn't as if she had anything to be grumpy about. Besides, she could smell pumpkin juice. If there was one thing about being in a different world that Hazel enjoyed the most, it was the food. She had to admit that orange juice was still her favorite morning drink, but wizarding drinks were starting to climb higher on her list.

She grabbed a seat a couple paces away from an unfamiliar boy at the Hufflepuff table. He seemed reserved, and like he might want to be left alone - but then again, the only ones who were truly awake by breakfast were the Gryffindors, so Hazel couldn't blame him for wanting some space. She didn't like sitting too close to other people either, but that was for a different reason.

They seemed to sit down right as the post was delivered - and Hazel made it a point to lean over her food. Getting letters stuck in your food wasn't awful - made for a soggy bit of postage, but the food was still good - it was the packages that were a true nightmare. They'd flip your plate on end and cover you in juice if it was big enough. Besides, it was all the more aggravating and embarrassing because Hazel really didn't receive postage. It was rather upsetting sometimes, but since she normally woke up before the post arrived, it wasn't always flying in her face every morning.

True to form, and even against her best efforts, a ruddy owl still managed to get a letter wedged in her eggs. Hazel grimaced, wiping off what she could of her breakfast before turning to hand it to the person sitting a seat or two away from her. She mumbled an apology.

Hazel continued to eat, watching out of the corner of her eye as people opened letters and packages from home. The boy on the other side of her had gotten a letter, and he seemed rather...shocked. Hazel almost opened her mouth to ask if he'd ever seen a letter before, but then he reached back into the envelope and produced a ring. Huh. Hazel idly watched, staring a bit rudely, at his visible discomfort and confusion. The ring fit him quite well, she noticed, though he seemed gobsmacked as to what he'd just read and opened. Hazel decided to make a bold move, and scooted a little closer to him. Just a bit.

"That's a lovely ring you've got," She noted, smiling. "Is it from your parents?" Maybe it was a little rude to ask, but he seemed...shaken? Hazel wasn't sure why a letter and a gift would shake him in the way that it did; she'd love to receive a gift from anyone. Someone could give her a rock and say, "I thought of you when I saw it," and she'd probably cry. "Sorry, I don't mean to be rude. I'm Hazel. You are?" She ended up introducing herself, deciding it was probably better to start off on the right foot instead of the wrong one.

The Hufflepuff blinked twice as if being snapped back to reality when he heard the female voice. He shook his head back and fourth like a wet dog would do to get water out of it's fur, which caused his already disarranged hair to become much more sloppy and disheveled than it had been before.

The voice had certainly surprised him, there was no doubt about that. Usually about half the Hufflepuff table was asleep on mornings like these, but that was likely due to the late night lesson they had had in astronomy the night before. Ross could have sworn they were giving the students less sleep than they needed, but he did not mind. It just meant more awake time for him. Besides, his schedule was not as awful as it could have been. It was a nice adjustment to the wizarding world, after all.

Suddenly realizing why he had snapped out of it in the first place, the boy looked over to his side. The voice had clearly come from the freckled girl beside him as she was now facing him. Earlier a note had dropped within her food from what he could hear while he was reading the letter. It was a shame when it happened, but it would be a fib if he were to claim it was not somewhat hilarious in his eyes on most days; however, he really could not find himself laughing today.

Her bouncy, curly cinnamon hair was the first feature that Ross noticed. It somewhat stood out to him, but he could not quite put his finger on why. Still, just her general appearance shouted that she was a Hufflepuff to him. It was something about her he could not quite put his finger on, but he was certainly intrigued. Perhaps if it had been any other time he would have asked her of it, or perhaps had a little 'investigation, but for now his brain was a mess.

Right now he was still in two separate worlds. One was trapped within his own mind of trying to process the news he had just received. The other part was here, in Hogwarts. The place he considered home the most. It felt uncomfortable as both worlds nagged at him, attempting to bring him to both. Ross certainly had a bias towards the wizarding world, but it was certainly hard to keep a grip as the thoughts fogged at his mind.

"That's a lovely ring you've got,Is it from your parents?"
the girl had inquired.

The boy let out a shaky, awkward laugh. He ran his fingers through his hair and found himself failing at keeping his eyes locked on hers, and found them looking at the side instead.

"Oh, me? Yeah, yeah It's from my parents. A lil' sheep ring thingie." The brunette quickly babbled.

He found himself bringing his eyes back towards her. The boy allowed his fingers to come down from his hair and put his left hand on his plate that had only toast crumbs remaining. The boy proceeded to fiddle with the ring, pulling it up slightly and twisting it back and fourth on his finger.

As the girl responded, he jumped in before she could quite finish her statement.

"Oh no, you ain't bein' rude! he quickly exclaimed, nearly interrupting her statement before she could finish it.

Realizing what he had done, he promptly shut up for a moment. As the girl introduced herself, he took a deep breath in. She did not mean harm, but he sincerely doubted she did in the first place. In all honesty, he had no clue why he was acting so odd. It was just a message from his parents. It was new family. Nothing could be horrible from that. Still, as he let the oxygen flow to his brain for a moment his thoughts began to flood back.

It was an awkward second before Ross responded.

"The name's Ross. Ross Stephens." he introduced, now in a much less hasty style.

He looked at her for anything else he could remark on, but his thoughts were still fighting. She gave him a compliment, perhaps he should give her one? That would be good, right? He looked down and noticed her eggs were a bit broken. It hit him that was likely what had happened with the letter beforehand. Had she not received one? Would a compliment be good during this time? He simply could not decide.

"nice.. eggs ya' got there." he blurted out.

Ross felt himself mentally face palm hard enough he could practically actually physically feel it. What a way to start a morning. The Hufflepuff hastily reached onto the table and grabbed the pumpkin juice. He proceeded to take a large swig and put it back down. This was not his ideal morning.

Hazel simply smiled, wide and toothy, despite her brain beginning to whir at a louder, quicker pace with the increasing concern that she should have just left him alone. After all, he didn't look like he wanted to talk - but then again, Hazel wasn't incredibly sure what a person who wanted to talk looked like. Previously, he had just looked a bit dazed and confused; relatively out of it. He looked how Hazel felt after waking up from a surprise nap, or how she felt when she was remembering a few things that could have - and should have - stayed lost to her memories.

Still, he was kind enough to accept her intrusion, and Hazel was grateful for that. In the moment he managed to take in her appearance, her sight snagged on his unruly mop of hair, and she was reminded of Bastille and his unmanageable curls. The corner of her mouth curved upwards again, though her eyes fell back to the wood of the table. And then, if only for a second, she glanced back, her sight wandering to the thick frames of his glasses, and noted them, before averting her gaze. There weren't many students walking about with glasses; much less glasses like those.

"Pleased to meet you, Ross." Hazel parroted. Once she had deemed that he was in a charitable enough mood to not force her away from him, she reached over to slide her plate down the table so she could eat it before it got cold. She glanced balefully at her eggs and the dent in them, and scoffed quietly at Ross's comment.

"I know, right? I love the taste of letters for breakfast." She feigned humor, though her skin burned bright with the embarrassment of it. She knew he'd seen it; so did several other people. That didn't really make it any less mortifying. "If it had been for me, that would have been funnier." Hazel sighed, picking up her fork again, if only to tap on the side of her plate with it because she couldn't bare to put a bite of food in her mouth.

Resting her elbow on the table and her cheek against her fist, Hazel poked at her bacon, awkwardly watching out of the corner of her eye while Ross picked up his goblet of juice and downed half the cup. "So...what does the ring mean? If you don't mind me asking. You were looking at your letter earlier like you couldn't read," Hazel smiled. Part of it was a joke, while the other part was a genuine question.
ooc. if any of this doesn't make sense, I am so sorry. It is 1am and I was supposed to be asleep an hour and a half ago lmao

He deemed the girl kind enough as soon as she spoke the words 'pleased to meet you.' It certainly did not mean much, but it was more of a comfort. Ross was not on the top of his game for conversating, but he certainly refused to consider himself the worst. Still, after finding out such sudden news he had difficulty saying the same back to the girl. Not because it was not a pleasure, no no. Meeting another friendly Hufflepuff was a pleasure, certainly. The conditions just were not a pleasure. They were less than desirable, really. Perhaps that was what made it so hard to respond with a simple 'a pleasure to meet you too', or a 'you as well'. Instead he tried his best with

"Yes, I believe so as well."

Which truly did not even make sense in the context, but still it was just attempting to go between the two thought processes he had going through his mind. A conversation with himself and a conversation with another. It was quite difficult to concentrate, but he fought through it.
"I know, right? I love the taste of letters for breakfast."
The girl had attempted to joke.

He cracked a slight smile, which seemed much more relaxed than his anxious laugh. It showed just the slightest bit of teeth, and if one were to pay attention they would see his shoulders slightly relaxed.

"Ya ever get a letter ya get to keep instead of eatin' it?" he inquired, slightly jokingly.

It was not really a joke at the same time, but his mind had completely blanked. He had already been thinking of a solid conversation starter instead of focusing on his deal, but it had somewhat merged with a joke he was trying to crack. At least it was passable as a joke.

Ross put down his cup of pumpkin juice, noticing nearly that nearly all of it was gone. He would certainly have to get another cup soon, as somehow he was still thirsty. At least, that was what his body was telling him. His stomach had started to ache and his head felt dizzy. Then again, perhaps water would be the better way to go in that case. He would have to consider it, certainly.
"So...what does the ring mean? If you don't mind me asking. You were looking at your letter earlier like you couldn't read,"
the freckled girl had inquired to him, slightly jokingly.

His nervous laugh seemed to ease, and mix with a slightly more genuine one. It was nervous, certainly, but it lasted much shorter. Much more like a chuckle.

"Yeah, err.." He brought up his left hand and rested it on the table in front of them. The Hufflepuff twisted the ring off very slowly and held it in between two of his fingers. The boy somewhat twisted it back and fourth as he began to speak in an attempt to show how the ring looks while also calming his nerves.

"I quite adore sheep, erm.. Mum thought it'd be good. S'pose there is more than that, but I sorta 'ave a thing for it. Got some family ties and stuff." He responded, but at the end he began to mumble before quickly crescendoing in volume with "But they're quite fascinatin' creatures. Erm.. The note wasn't about the ring, so i promise ya I know basic vocabulary!" He joked at the end awkwardly.

Hazel hadn't really bothered to liner on his response, as odd as it was; be it she was too distracted, or she just didn't hear it. Had she heard him, she might have frowned, or questioned him on it, because it was a little out of place and didn't make too much sense. But her goal wasn't necessarily to understand him, it was just to talk. Hazel was more of a morning person than anything else, and she rarely found anybody willing to exchange conversation the way she was. So in truth, she was just pleased to have someone to talk to.

At some point, while she was pushing her cold eggs around with her utensil, Ross returned her quip, asking if she ever got to keep them. Hazel huffed a puff of air out of her nose, scoffing. "I wish. People don't send me letters in this world," She told him honestly. It wasn't as if she needed to hide it; it was a simple fact. Perhaps she should be embarrassed as to why people didn't send her letters, but at some point during the school year, she had realized that a lot of other students were in the same boat as she was.

Hazel let her mind filter out, instead turning her focus back to Ross and what he was saying. "Cool," Was the only thing she could think of. Inwardly, she wondered if sheep were an important animal in their family. She wondered if families had insignias; if it was at all like some bits of history she'd learned in school. "What was the note about if it wasn't about the ring?"

The Hufflepuff would be lying if he were to say he was surprised. Ross had not met many people in Hogwarts, but he knew enough of them to know that often parents would not reply to their children. Perhaps it was for money reasons, perhaps it was for other reasons. Either way, it was not a frequent event for some people.

Of course, Ross refused to accept he was "some people." No no, his parents cared. There was not a shred of doubt about that in his hopeful little mind. His parents had simply forgotten, had they not? It would be the most logical option, of course. They had always talked to him back at home, so of course they would talk to him here. Still, he dreaded summer. He would prefer to stay at the school than go home, but perhaps that was simply because he had become accustomed to everything here instead. That made logical sense to him. Still, he could not help himself but empathize with her. Somehow, what she had said brought him back to the world for a moment.

The boy gently placed his pumpkin juice on the table, and looked at the girl with a slight understanding in his dark brown eyes.

"I getcha" he picked up the letter that was now crinkled due to the poor care he took towards it "First letter i ever got is right 'ere." he admitted to the girl.

He glanced at the table slightly as he attempted to think of something. Many people would say there were questions you could ask that would help you learn a lot about something based on a simple answer, yet his mind was going blank. What would one of those questions be?

"If ya got one, what would ya hope it'd say." he suddenly asked, looking towards the freckled Hufflepuff once more.

Soon the dreaded question came. The one that he would have to explain both to himself and to her what the letter he had gotten was about.
"What was the note about if it wasn't about the ring?"
She had asked

How could he explain it? Should he just give her the owl? No no then it may come off as confusing. It seemed a little complicated, did it not? Explaining it seemed quite difficult too. No matter what the words would always come out wrong. Personally, he had not been a fan of that.

With the letter in hand, he opened it once more and glanced at the words. It was almost as if he had forgotten, though that could not have been the case at all.

"I-it's not that big o' a deal, really." The boy lied.

If he were to be made of wood, his nose would almost certainly be extending. He laughed awkwardly. The mind knows when one is lying, and that was certainly a symptom. It was just so funny to the mind, that one could not help but laugh. So that was what Ross did, until he managed to stop himself and try once more.

"Just some.. family stuff and such." He attempted to elaborate.

There was an uncomfortable silence for a moment, before he realized that he should actually bother to explain. Ross had never considered himself a closed book, and there was certainly no reason to stat now.

"Mum and Dad are havin' a baby." He suddenly stated in a tone that was completely new to himself.

His brain went silent, and the fight between worlds suddenly stopped.

His parents were having another child, and he was not sure how to feel on the matter. Perhaps he was upset, perhaps he was scared. Was it his fault? he did not know. All he knew was his parents were having a child, and that was that.
