Friendship is Magic
@River Dewlight @Dan Palmer
Continued from here.
A little damper but a lot happier to be in the warmth of the castle, Mari guided her newfound friends to the Great Hall. Red and Palmer had decided to come, and she was elated. Every once in a while she would look back to ensure that they were still actually there. She just couldn't believe it. She! Mari Haynes! Was eating dinner with someone! Two someones, in fact! She was already drafting her letter to Lucy; none of it would be a lie - a first. Well, at least...none of it would be a lie if she could figure out Red's actual name and if Dan's name was actually "Dan" or "Palmer." Jury was still out on both of these facts. But a dinner was a perfect opportunity to get the answers, and maybe, just maybe, she could even begin to understand Palmer's accent a bit more too. She giggled a bit to herself as she walked. Pooped. She had thought the Slytherins had pooped in Dan's shoes! Now that she was away from the misunderstanding, it was a bit funnier.
Mari pushed opened the Great Hall's doors with all of her force; it was the first time that did not realize how heavy they were, for she was so light with happiness. As soon as she entered the hall, calamity struck, though - not calamity for a normal person, just for someone who wasn't used to having friends, anxious to not offend. The girl, shivering a bit from her damp robes, looked back towards her new friends with a deeply worried expression on her face. She waved her arms back at the table and asked softly, "Um...which table do we sit at?"
Though she felt most comfortable at the Hufflepuff table, she didn't have enough friends in her own house to truly feel a devotion to sitting there. She just hoped that Red and Dan wouldn't start the first fight of their friendship, duking it out (perhaps with swords from the knights that guarded the large room?) over which house was more superior. Her friends just needed to get along; they needed to for Mari's sake. They were her only hope at feeling...well, normal!
In an attempt to dispel any hard feelings, Mari added hastily, "Maybe we could start with one house table - Ravenclaw or Slytherin, of course - and rotate if we...er...want to have more meals?" She didn't know if they'd like her enough to have more meals together. "I'm fine with whatever, of course. Just lead the way and I'll follow."
Trying to ease her nerves, she smiled at the two and looked expectantly at them while awaiting their responses.

I apologize if my replies become a little slow as I’m entering exams and finals these next weeks.
River let out a relieved sigh as she hastily entered the doors to the great castle. She took her glasses off and dried off the few rain droplets with a dry spot on her robes, grabbed a chunk of red hair, and twisted it as the water dripped down and made a small wet puddle on the stone floor. Sure, it wasn’t raining That much, but for some reason, River’s hair seemed to always soak up as much rain as absolutely possible. She grabbed her bag to see if her books and supplies had made it without getting wet, and sure enough, they were laying nice and dry in her burgundary red backpack, untouched by the rain.
River threw the straps over her shoulders, and turned to look at Mari and Dan, who had also run inside as the rain started misting the green grass outside.
Dan and Mari were some of the first people she’d really talked to since she got to Hogwarts. River was never great at making friends, and that was perhaps because she was very selective of those she’d surround herself with. And in River’s mind, earning the status of friend, was not an easy task. This, of course, is different for everyone. Did River feel like she really had any real friends since... well ever..? Perhaps not.
She sent Dan and Mari a quick smile, and headed along them, on the way into the great hall. She could smell the food already, filling the atmosphere around them, leaving a calm feeling in River’s body.
The scent hit her even more as she entered through the great doors, opened by Mari. She was not only greeted by the smell, but also by the chatter of all the students already inside, enjoying their meals.
As they had entered the doors, River heard Mari speak up, "Um...which table do we sit at?". River scanned the room. There were students by every table, talking, laughing, eating and chattering. Avoiding others wasn’t necessarily an option. «I really don’t have a preference», River answered, and looked over at Dan and Mari. No tables were a bad option, the three of them would be together either way.

Dan stepped away from the girls, and vigorously shook his head, dislodging the water from his hair. Well, most of it. He decided to wait for his feet to dry better before putting the shoes back on. If he even decided to do that at all. He was no stranger to being barefoot, he did it all the time. And he was not about to let excess water in his shoes.
He found it a bit odd, though. He'd not been this comfortable around girls before, most of his friends back home being boys. The circle of best friends that he had were all boys, for sure. But this group seemed nice. They weren't catty or obnoxious like so many of the girls he knew back in his other schools. And they actually helped him, instead of laughing at him, which was a plus. Although, he got the feeling that Mari didn't trust him. In addition to that, she seemed REALLY eager for him to swim in the lake... Either she wanted him to break the rules REALLY badly, or she was dying to see what his body looked like...
Dan decided not to think about it too hard.
As they entered the Great Hall, he heard Mari ask about which tables to sit at.
Dan was a bit confused. He was under the assumption that all houses only ate together. Hence them being called the Slytherin, Ravenclaw, Hufflepuff and Gryffindor tables. But, once he thought about it, he didn't remember hearing any rules stating that they COULDN'T intermingle....
"We.... don't have to eat at our house table? I thought that was a thing..."

Take your time, River. I...have committed to too many RPs so am completely fine with delays, haha.
Mari was a bit surprised when Red seemed to have no preference. Though she didn't really have much reason to believe so, she had been under the impression that Red had strong preferences and was not afraid to voice such opinions. It was likely because, in comparison to Vince, Red's house mate, Red had vocalized her thoughts much more. She had even attempted to ruin Mari's fun on many occasion just a few minutes prior.
All the same, though, it made things easier that she did not have as much of an opinion. Mari half expected that Dan would conclude that Slytherin was the obvious choice, but instead, in his typical, accented way, he instead posed the valid question of wondering if they actually had to eat at their house table.
Mari looked at him, perplexed not because of his question but of the way it made her think. "Hm," she began carefully, looking up and down the tables. Come to think of it, it didn't seem like people mixed too often while eating meals. But there hadn't been a rule she'd heard, unless she had somehow forgotten this fact. She reminisced on the good old days of when BonBon had welcomed her to Hufflepuff and she had known quite little about magic. Time flew so fast when you were in a new world.
Finally, after careful consideration, she continued: "I'd think not. I mean look-" she gestured to the tables, "I see that everyone is in their rightful house, but...do you think the founders of Hogwarts honestly believed that we'd never want to be friends with anyone else? If they did, I'd say that's rubbish."
Never mind the fact that she still had a prejudice against Slytherin, she did understand the importance of knowing different types of people. Besides, Red and Palmer were quite nice, and the first people she'd felt truly comfortable with. Mari did not want to miss out on an opportunity to get to know them further.

Friendship is Magic
Standing by the doorway, River scanned the great hall in front of them. Just as Mari had said, a lot of people were sitting in their assigned house, which, in a lot of ways made sense. They are often the people you get to know best, as you spend a lot of time around your house mates, but every once in a while, a mix-up is good for everybody.
There seemed to be a lot of people around the Ravenclaw table today, and River didn’t have anyone to go to over there, gryffindor would perhaps seem a little strange, as none of them actually were in that house at all.
River looked to Dan as he had spoken. In which moment, Mari had answered him, before River had time to say anything.
Mari definitely had a point. Keeping students from getting to know people from other houses, would really go against a lot of what today’s society stands for.
«I mean, it would set the wrong picture to keep students apart from each other just because they’re in different houses», River mentioned as she nodded in agreement of Mari’s earlier statement. «It would be like refusing people to eat with each other, simply because they come from different countries», she added, just to have a comparison.
River looked at them for a moment, «If none of you have any better ideas, I guess we could go for the Slytherin table then?», The young Ravenclaw asked with an unenthusiastic tone to her voice. Without waiting for an answer, she started walking towards the table, surrounded by slytherins, and so far, slytherins only.

Despite his suspicions it would seem that the others agreed that there was no rule forbidding house mixing at the tables. And if there was such a rule, it was stupid, and they were not going to follow it. This relieved Dan greatly. He didn't want to believe that this school, the best place he'd ever been to thus far, would try and mandate segregation of houses like that.
To his delight, they agreed to sit and eat together regardless, and adding to it, Mari started moving to HIS table! At least he wouldn't have to sit with the Ravenclaws and inevitably be scrutinized by them and their judgmental stared. At least not the first time. He might have to next time.
Dan happily made for the Slytherin table and sat down with his fellow Serpents. Dan didn't really get all the bad hype Slytherin had. Sure, some of them were elitists, but they were all nice. Well, to him at least. He'd never seen a Slytherin harassing a Slytherin, so there was that. Maybe they messed with the others? Dan didn't know. All he knew is that Silver and Green are a great combo of colors, and snakes are cool.
Dan sat down and motioned for the others to do the same.

River sat down opposite Dan, as she looked around to the other slytherins by the table. She actually never mined Slytherin too much, and at one point truly expected to be placed in that house. It was the sorting hat's first mention, under River's sorting. She ended up in Ravenclaw none the less, and couldn't say she minded that at all. She looked coldly at Dan, he seemed happy with the choice of table. Seems like he's content with his house at least.| @Dan Palmer | @Mari Haynes |
"So, what are you guys having?", she asked, and laid her eyes upon Mari.
River had absolutely no desire for food at the moment, and really just wanted to sit there for a little. She would often enjoy sitting around and simply watch others. She could be a little creepy at times perhaps, but she didn't really care any more. People were just really facinating, all the strange things they do and say. one could be surprised to know what one might see and hear if you just observe quietly from a distance.
Perhaps that was why River would often be pretty quiet? Becuse she enjoyed finding out things by observing others. Paying attention to how they act, how they treat others, and how they react to certain things and situations.
Still awaiting an answer from the others, she sat looking at a boy by the gryffindor table. Who seemed to be sending strange faces to someone by the Hufflepuff table. Humans can be really weird...

I'm so sorry this took forever...RL has been getting me a bit.
Red's commentary about it being wrong to keep students apart from each other just because they're in different houses made Mari have a sinking feeling of unease. Granted, Mari was the one who had somewhat prompted the statement, but when she had made her own, she had not thought of the true implications from it. She had grown up, her entire life, being told that Slytherins were evil, wrong, and yet...here she was, walking towards the Slytherin table, with one of her new friends, a Slytherin. Perhaps Isa wasn't right? Maybe one shouldn't stereotype people based on where the hat places them?
If Mari were older, perhaps she would linger on this more. But the Hufflepuff was still only 12, and quite moldable by her parents. While the thoughts lodged themselves inside of her, her mother's influence would be the dominating force in Mari's soul. Palmer, though a Slytherin, was just an oddity. Otherwise, Slytherin house produced bad people.
Dan also followed Red without a word, and they all sat down pretty quietly. He seemed happy though, perhaps happy that they had chosen to sit at the Slytherin table, so Mari fought any inclination she had to make a disgusted face that she was surrounded by snakes. No, this wasn't about the gross reptiles; it was about friends, and Mari could smile at the thought of friends. So she did.
River asked what the other two were going to have, so Mari smiled bigger and said, "Chocolate, of course!" The day had made her feel especially rebellious; so rebellious that, though she would follow Isa's beliefs that Slytherins were evil, she would eat chocolate instead of the vegetables her mother preferred. Reaching for a slice of chocolate cake, Mari licked her lips in excitement. She took a bite and then, mouth full, asked the others, "And what about you two?"

Dan sat down, ignoring the stares from the other Slytherins. Obviously, they didn't much care for him bringing other houses over. But honestly, Dan could hardly care any less what they thought about it. He was friends with these two, and if they didn't like it, they could eat it.
Speaking of eating, Mari was going all in on chocolate. It wasn't that Dan didn't enjoy chocolate, quite the opposite, in fact. But, not right at the start. Chocolate was best left for AFTER the salty, savoriness. And speaking of such-
Dan began heaping fried chicken onto his plate. Legs, thighs, breasts, he didn't care. He knew that Hogwarts took the American route when making fried chicken, and GOD did the Americans do it right. Salty, savory, cripsy, OH. Once he was good for his first serving, he started tearing into the chicken like a rabid beast. This boy was STARVING, and he'd been presented with his favorite food. There was no hope for the fried chicken platter.
It was AMAZING. The skin was perfect, the spices were wonderful, and GOD it was juicy.
Then Dan remembered that he had friends present, and was embarrassed for exactly two seconds before going back in for seconds.
"Oh yeah. I'm havin' fried chicken. You not hungry, River?"

ReducioI’m so incredibly sorry for dissapearing so suddenly. I just finished my finals and exams, so I’ll be back and active now
As River watched the other dining students surrounding the different tables of the great hall, she saw that Mari was already going for the chocolate. Predictable... River thought, as the girl plated a piece of cake.
River turned around and grabbed her notebook, inn and quill out of her still damp bag, and started sqribbling some notes on a blank page. Every now and then, she would flip back a couple of pages to check ln her older notes, from charms, transfiguration, potions and defence against the dark arts.
River peaked up from her parchment, and saw, across by the ravenclaw table, two girls sneering their way. The red-head sent them a serious look, and turned away.
She watched as Dan grabbed himself some fried chicken and put it on a plate of his own. He seems to really like that chicken, River thought, as he dove in head first.
Or maybe he is simply very hungry.
"Oh yeah. I'm havin' fried chicken. You not hungry, River?", Dan asked, as River had just turned back to her notes. Not taking her eyes off her parchment, she answered coldly, «No, not really». She glanced up at him and smiled weakly. «Plus, I have tl finish my notes for the herbology homework that’s due tomorrow», she added slowly, and continued scratching the quill along the paper.
