John wasn’t sure this was real when an owl delivered a letter saying he was to go to a magic school. He didn’t believe his fate when school representatives came to his house and declared him a wizard. He remained skeptical when he and his family visited Diagon Alley, that magical shopping district full of unbelievable items. The entire time, the boy braced himself to wake up from this magical dream.
That’s not to say John didn’t enjoy the experience. Life was fleeting; a dream was more so. The boy made sure to see, touch, and smell everything he came across in Diagon Alley. That eventually earned him a trip to St. Mungo’s Hostpital, where doctor’s were dressed like residents of Emerald City from The Wizard of Oz. It was so fantastical, it couldn’t be real. He was so sure he would wake up when he fell asleep on the train ride to the school. He was already planning on writing every detail in a journal so he could make a best-selling novel. He’d call it “Harvey Porter and the Philistine’s Bone”.
It was when he was called on stage and a teacher put a giant hat on his head that things got real for John. His entire head was engulfed by the hat. In the darkness, it spoke to him.
“HOLY COW!” John cried out in shock, though it was pretty muffled through the hat. Once he got over the shock of the talking hat, the hat proceeded to interview him about aspects of his life. He wasn’t sure what this was leading to until the hat cried out a seemingly made up word. A table of yellow-clad students cheered the announcement. That was it. That was the moment when John knew he wasn’t in a dream. He had a house of people wanting him to join in this crazy world.
Yes, John belonged to HuffleTough.
At least, that’s what he thought he heard.
John’s imagination went wild as he pictured what his house would be like. He imagined a group of muscle men. One would lift a stack of bricks with one arm, while pulling a rabbit out of a hat with the other. The other men were doing the same thing, only they were also singing in rhythm with their exercise.
“HUFF…TUFF…HUFF…TUFF”
Sometimes, John’s imagination was more magical than Hogwarts would ever be.
As great as this was, he had some pangs of homesickness. He missed his home in Saundersfoot and the friends he made there. In particular, his friend Sadie Lewis. The two used to spend summers goofing off in whatever locale their parents dragged them to. That all ended not too long ago, when she had to move to some boarding school. She wouldn’t say where, being very secretive about anything related to it. John had wondered whether she just didn’t want him to know. That she grew tired of him and wanted to get away.
Well, joke’s on her, because there was no way she was going to a school like this!

She had been waiting for this her whole life. The stupid stunt called public highschool had been just a precursor to this... to Hogwarts. God, she could hardly believe she was finally here! And Gryffindor no less, just like she'd hoped. Her dad would be so proud! And she had every intention of following in his footsteps, becoming the second strongest Beater the Gryffindor team could see.
Despite being glad to be out of the hell hole that was muggle middle school... she did miss her friend John. He was quite funny, and had an easier time than anyone in making her laugh. But hey, she would see him in the summers, and on breaks. Maybe write him a letter or two. Now that she thought about it, she had been a little bit abrupt in leaving.
She paused, and sniffed a little. Maybe she did miss home.. a little bit. She missed Dalia tugging at her hair in the early morning begging her to make pancakes, and her mom doing her hair before school, her dad coming home from a big game and telling her about every score.
And she really did miss John, because he was one of the only people who tolerated her despite her fiery attitude. He seemed to balance her out quite well. Though she had no trouble talking, people seemed intimidated by her. She wasn't the easiest to befriend, Sadie knew that.. but oh, what she wouldn't do to have a friend right about now.
Her prayers were answered as a familiar tuft of blonde hair came in sight. Eyes wet with tears, a sign of vulnerability she never would have even dreamed of showing to anyone back home, she stared at him with an open mouth. "John?!"

There was John, proudly walking to the table of yellow, his new dorm mates for the foreseeable future. As he walked, he passed a sea of red, the Gruff Friend Doors as he heard them called. They were all politely clapping at his class reveal, with the one exception of a teary-eyed girl. At first, he was really glad that this complete stranger was so happy for him, maybe happier than he was! That was quite a feat itself. Upon closer examination, she looked awfully familiar. Surely not Sadie. Sadie was at boarding (more like BORING) school, while he went to Awesome Magic School of AwesomeCraft and Awesomery.
Then she called out his name. John looked in her direction, dumbfounded. How did she get here? The school officials made it very clear that "muggles" weren't allowed at the school. There could only be one conclusion.
Sadie took the wrong train. She was in the wrong school!
How terrified she must be, trapped in this crazy school and learning magic was real. It was only a matter of time before Sadie was hauled away and taken to who knows where. Immediately, he rushed over to her, ducking down to whisper in her ear.
"The wizards...they can't find out you're here," he whispered as slowly and quietly as he could. "Come with me if you want to liiiiiivvvve."
He always wanted to use that movie line, and boy was this the time for it. He grabbed Sadie by the arm and attempted to drag her away from the festivities. Wizard or not, John wasn't going to sit by and let his muggle friend get obliterated or whatever wizards did to regular people. Along the way, they were dodging chairs, people, and drink glasses. None of them were going to get in the way. He would save her.
"Don't worry," he reassured Sadie in whisper. "I'll make sure they don't take you to Ass-Ban. That's the wizard jail, but they might secretly put regular people there. I don't know, I'm still learning."

Oh, it was definetly John. Him and his movie quotes.. She hiccuped as a small smile fluttered onto her face, desperately glad to see a piece of home here with her. He was being silly, but he was always silly. Allowing him to shuffle her away, Sadie stared at him quizically. He seemed strangely intent on pushing her out of the great hall, and she was desperately ducking and dodging all the festivities and chaos while furiously rubbing at her eyes, trying to stop any more tears.
"John -- where are you -- where are we going?" She muttered, after just narrowly avoiding a tall glass of floating orange juice within an inch of her life. And then he leaned in and whispered. His tone, despite it's reassuring softness, ignited a flame within her.
"You idiot!" She shouted, pulling away from him in digust as the redness in her cheeks grew ever redder. "It's Azkaban. Azkaban! And I'm not a muggle, John!" She crossed her arms in a huff. "I'm a wizard! And I guess... you are too. How can you think... auhg!"
Sadie sighed. She looked at him with fiery eyes, and the fire dimmed. She leaned forward and hugged him tightly, resting her chin on his shoulder before pulling away again. "I missed you." She said with a pout.

"I missed you too," John replied softly, reciprocating the hug. Though still confused, he was still relieved that she didn't run off to some other school. She was as fiery as ever, but he was used to it by now. Not many could stand his boyish naivety, so having that someone on his greatest adventure was the best part for John. Even if there was no magic involved.
"So, you didn't go to the wrong school by mistake? That's good, but I wish I could have gone through with my plan. I was going to hide you under my bed and feed you wizard crackers until I found a way to get you out. I don't know what wizard crackers taste like though. I'll try one first and let you know later."
"But this is great," John continued. "Here I thought you wouldn't tell me about your school cause you didn't like me or something." But now we can share all the cool wizard stuff. Like, did you know that goblins and stuff are real?! And that there're elves in the kitchen?! I wonder if I ask them where they took the hobbits, they'd get the joke..."
John paused as his mind imagined multiple versions of Orlando Bloom cooking they same meals they were eating on this exciting night.
"Ooh, and I bet you don't know anything about this Harry Potter fellow. He had all sorts of crazy adventures in this school. It we even had half as much fun as he had...we'd be legends among the HuffleToughs and Gruff Friend Doors!"
