A Touchy Subject
Aaron strolled into the Great Hall on Thursday morning and took a seat at one end of the Hufflepuff table. He was early to breakfast today, and immediately started piling food onto his plate. It felt like he was constantly hungry these days. Although he no longer trained 24/7 for Quidditch, he did still take runs and did taekwondo sessions. Still, those didn't really account for his ravenous appetite lately. His mother would say it was because he was a growing boy, and maybe that was true. His voice had started cracking over the summer and he had grown at least an inch (and although he didn't feel it, he was still growing now).Thursday | 16 September 2021 | start of breakfast
Great Hall, Hufflepuff Table
Regardless of the reason, Aaron found himself shoveling food into his mouth with gusto that morning. He hardly noticed when someone took the seat across from him, but his eyes did catch the movement slightly. His gaze lifted from his plate and he found himself looking at Jack Warren. They had become a bit closer since the events of September 1st and their trip to Hogsmeade last weekend.
"Hey, Jack! Alright?" he greeted, after swallowing a mouthful of eggs. He proudly gestured to the vicious badge pinned to the front of his robes, which now swirled around to read "Jack Warren Sucks." Aaron grinned upon seeing what it read, then looked at Jack's robes instinctively to see if he was wearing a similar badge. His head tilted suddenly, noticing a certain Prefect badge missing. He hadn't been wearing it for a while, and Aaron was just now realizing what it meant. "Whatever happened to your Prefect status? Is it related to that rumor about you beating up some kid during camp?" he asked, his eyes examining Jack's face to see if it was a touchy subject.
@Jack Warren
Aaron has a Calming Presence.Your presence simply puts others at ease, if it is your carefree personality or the trust others have in you, the result is still the same. With you there, perhaps through your encouragement, your allies are able to better focus.

A Touchy Subject
After nearly two weeks of classes, Jack had still felt the summer sickness still dragging him closer to the underworld. Jack was an average student, but it was a challenge for the boy to do anything productive of his own accord. On this morning, in particular, the boy sat in front of an open textbook. The great hall was bustling as usual, and people were happily chatting. However, sadly the boy was sitting alone at one of the respective ends of the long tables. It was like somebody had placed a bubble around the third year. Apparently, people were deciding to keep their distance. If it stayed on page 126 any longer, it might end up staying that way for the rest of eternity. Why did magic have to be so cool and yet so lame? Who friggin' wants to learn to do cool shit?
Not that his homework mattered because the boy was just looking for an excuse to put the book away. Who even cared about Puffapods or Stinksap? Stupid friggin' plants. Angrily the boy would sigh before sliding his hand under cover of the book before whipping his hand up like he was serving a volleyball. The boy could swear that there was a puff of dust as the book was closed. Had it been sitting open for that long?
Suddenly a voice broke through Jack's dust cloud confusion. It was as if somebody had decided to blow the dust off his brain, aw well. Looking up from the unread textbook, Jack could see a friendly, familiar face. Aaron Jones was always a welcomed sight. His being around immediately brightened his mood as Jack smiled up at his friend. "Aaron! Where have you been, mate?" Honestly, Jack missed Aaron; he was a good guy to have around. However, that smile would hardly last long. Prefect status, how fun. "Yeah, mate. I lost it. Apparently, defending your family doesn't count as a good reason to open a can of whoop-ass on somebody. Browne took it away." His words quickly morphed into a grumble. It was most definitely a touchy subject. Jack just looked down at his half-eaten plate of food. Who would of guessed that beating somebody to a bloody pulp would be the cause of him losing his prefect status. It took a second for the kid to recompose himself, but the mask was back up. "Can we not talk about that stuff, I'm more curious about why you didn't come to camp-" Speaking of touchy subjects, it was time for Jack to respond in kind.

Aaron's eyes traveled to the textbook that was open in front of Jack. Was it Herbology? Wait, did they have an Herbology assignment that was due today? A reading that he had forgotten to do? Aaron tried to search his brain for the answer, but he really couldn't remember. He'd just have to remember ask Jack on their way to their first class in a bit.
"Family? You've got family here?" Aaron asked in surprise. He didn't know that Jack had siblings here. And what did he mean by defending them? He was fully prepared to ask more about it, but the third-year finally registered the look on Jack's face. Ah, it was indeed a touchy subject. He was staring at his food like he was going to murder it. Aaron let the subject drop after those few questions, lowering his own gaze to his food and shoveling more eggs into his mouth.
His eyes raised and he nodded his head, still chewing, when Jack requested that they drop the subject entirely. Only for the other Hufflepuff boy to ask why Aaron hadn't gone to summer camp. It was Aaron's turn to feel grumbly, thinking back to the moment when he told his parents he wasn't going to go. An impulsive and stupid decision - he regretted not going just to prove a point to his brother.
"Also family stuff," he said, after swallowing the food that had been in his mouth. It was not a lie, and hopefully made it clear that it was not worth talking more about. Jack was a cool guy who was slowly becoming one of Aaron's better friends, but Aaron hadn't even told Lydia about his summer in detail.. but maybe Jack would understand? After all, he had family stuff going on too, right? Maybe Aaron could share a bit more detail without seeming like a total idiot. He didn't think Jack would judge him too harshly. "I would've gone, but there was a whole situation going on with my brother. He was being stupid and we said some stuff, and I just.. decided not to go. I didn't really want to be around anyone," Aaron summarized, hoping that without the nitty gritty details he would not come off looking like a complete loser.
