Flying Toast

Scarlett had almost finished her marmalade toast and was honestly feeling a bit bored - until the morning owls came. They usually weren't too important, but today one of them dropped a big fat Howler right at the plate of one Anastasia Beckett. Scarlett glanced over with a glare on her face. Beckett deserved a lot more than a Howler from what she had done to Scarlett, but you couldn't get everything in life. It was opened and a booming voice began: Anastasia Blair Marie Katherine Alexandra Sophia Isabella Ann Beckett, you should be ashamed of yourself.
Scarlett could hardly contain laughter as the message was played for everyone to hear. Now, obviously there was that little incident at the end, with the dragging her reputation through the mud, but did she care? She barely had a wealthy pure-blood family anyway, and as far as she knew, they didn't have a reputation. Now hers though - Beckett used to be a popular girl in second-year, before she went emo. Most likely most people would side with her in a fight. But there were some members of the Anti-Anastasia Society, so perhaps all hope wasn't lost. And anyway, right now, Scarlett just wanted to heckle Beckett in front of everyone. What on Earth were consequences anyway?
She pushed the bench back with a smirk and stood up at their table. The Howler had finished with a more kindly note - who would want to be nice and polite to Beckett for goodness sake - before
it burst into flames and ash floated onto the table. "Hey Beckett!" called Scarlett, her sadistic tone surely mirroring how her enemy would talk to her later on. "Or should I say - Anastasia Blair Marie Katherine Alexandra Sophia Isabella Ann Beckett. What a mouthful. What kind of stupid parents would name their kid like that?"
She knew the next blow would be the most cutting, which was exactly how she wanted it to be.
"Oh right. Sorry, stupid dead parents."
That was just rumours, but if that particular rumour could get such a reaction out of Beckett, maybe it was worth testing it again. Scarlett waited only a second for her words to sink in before continuing. "Ooh a Howler. What has little miss Anastasia done this time? Not - oh how scandalous - attack another student in the corridors by any means?"
She gave a little mock gasp and watched with cold eyes to see how the other Gryffindor would react.────── ☆ ───────

In some deeply messed up way, Ana was happy to receive the Howler. She hadn't spoken to Ruby since she'd been back at school, and she was almost certain that Rafa and Eyre hated her. Ivy seemed to have disappeared as well. As hard as Ana was trying to push everyone away, every bit of that still hurt. While she didn't particularly fancy being yelled at, especially considering what had happened the last time an adult had shouted at her, the idea that there was still anyone who cared enough made the world seem slightly less horrible. Her parents had never sent a howler, generally opting for in-person critiques as opposed to making a scene the way a howler would.
Finishing her first cup of coffee and pouring herself a second, she stood to go, ignoring the stares of people who had nothing better to do. While the Howler had an oddly positive connotation for her, she wasn't overly eager to get more stares than usual and opted for an exit, since she was mostly done eating anyway.
That was until a stupid, familiar voice rang out. She ought to have ignored it. Allowing herself to be goaded into doing something she might regret in front of the entire school would almost definitely end badly. Then again, she was in a somewhat decent mood and she was fairly confident that she could reply to the vile dishrag without physical violence.
"Parents with class, I wouldn't expect someone like you to know a thing about it," Ana said haughtily. While her recent conduct might say otherwise, she was from one of the most well-respected wizarding families, as her mother, aunt, uncle, and cousins had reminded her in every conversation growing up. Her eyes narrowed at the remark about dead parents. It was closer to the truth than she would have liked, and while it wasn't fully accurate, it stung. Still, she wouldn't allow the other girl the satisfaction of ruffling her feathers so easily. "What the actual fuck is wrong with you? Were that true, which it most certainly isn't, in what world is that something to mock someone about?"
She rolled her eyes at Scarlett's jab about fighting in the halls. Was she honestly that stupid, or had Ana hit her harder than she remembered? "And I'd bloody well do it again, you stupid bitch," she said, cocking her head slightly. On that note, she was ready to go. She had defended her honor or whatever it was she was trying to do without getting too worked up and she needed to stop while she was ahead for once. "Although, clearly, you're not in any state for a rematch." She began to go. She could have left it at that, but of course, she didn't. As she brushed past the other girl, she poured her coffee down the front of Scarlett's robes. It was a manner that would have looked like a genuine accident to any onlookers, but it was most definitely deliberate. While the coffee was barely lukewarm, it certainly wouldn't be fun to have a drink dumped on you first thing in the morning, even if there was magic to clean it up.

Well, that was how Anastasia was going to play it, was she? Scarlett detested the girl, and not just because she had attacked her in the hallways. What was Anastasia's deal? She was so - so insane. One moment, she was fighting a random girl who had uttered a single word (or, in truth, a sentence) about her supposedly dead parents, and the next, she was playing the polite and civil act. It annoyed Scarlett thoroughly. Just choose an attitude and stick with it.
To be honest, Scarlett didn't hate many people. Only around four - Georgia, her parents and Beckett. No matter how angry she got she didn't truly detest anyone except those four, and even then, Georgia seemed alright. But Anastasia had no redeeming aspect to her in Scarlett's eyes. Anastasia had turned on her and fought her in the halls, Anastasia somehow made everything she did look like a complete accident, Anastasia was the one who had tripped Rose over, worried Lucia and made a trail of drama-queenery everywhere she went. She played the 'I'm so traumatized so I'm excused from everything' card too much. She was such a bitch, acting all depressed yet still rich and beautiful and -
It was hard to put her loathing of the girl into words, but that pretty much summed it up.
"Actually, I do," fired back Scarlett, at Anastasia's first statement. In all honesty, she'd rather not have 'parents with class' and was absolutely fine with Beckett insulting them. But she wouldn't tell her that. "And I would do it if this someone had, you know, attacked me. Being traumatized by whatever doesn't excuse you from doing that."
There was definitely tension in the air now, and Scarlett's slightly raised voice got a few people nearby to look. Oh not fucking again, thought Scarlett, clenching her fists. They didn't need an audience. Someday, the two of them would settle it out in private, but today, that looked like it wasn't going to happen.
"Mm, I have other ways to get back at you," said Scarlett, a tad carefully. Because she really didn't, but did Anastasia have to know that?
And then it happened. This time, it was utterly Anastasia's fault (though last time it was too). A gush of lukewarm coffee, poured into her robes as Anastasia passed by to leave. Scarlett froze in her position. Even though there was magic to clean it up, it still got on her fucking nerves, her anger meter shooting up sky-high. "Hell no, bitch," muttered Scarlett, swiping a random piece of toast off the table. A disgruntled 'hey!' was accompanied with her thievery, but Scarlett didn't care as she flung the toast right at Anastasia's cheek. Toast didn't hurt, but the sugar on it would be all scratchy and uncomfortable, paired with the warm butter, which would be incredibly unpleasant. Fabulous.────── ☆ ───────

Ana genuinely only hated a few people. Herself, Rose, and Scarlett. She couldn't even bring herself to hate any of her family for very long before she was filled with guilt and self-loathing. While she definitely hated herself the most, at least the majority of the time, Scarlett was a close second. She was worse than Rose, which was saying something. She had all of the obnoxious doe-eyed self-righteousness the other ginger did, and yet she did things that were clearly bad and acted like they weren't. Rose, in theory, had plausible deniability. Scarlett didn't. What was it about redheads that made Ana loathe them so?
As an aside, what kind of parents saw their red-haired child and instantly thought that naming them after their hair color was the way to go? If Rose and Scarlett were acceptable names, why not Tomato? Or Bell Pepper? Or Red Poison Dart Frog? While Ana wasn't one to judge other's names, considering she had far too many (although in her opinion, that made her rather an authority on the matter), it was moronic.
"Obviously, you don't," Ana replied with a look of complete contempt. While Ana wasn't exactly the daughter her parents wished she was, at a minimum, she did not conduct herself as if she had been brought up by leprechauns as Scarlett did. Most of the time anyways. "And who said anything about me being traumatized? Perhaps I just have a low tolerance for scum spreading vile falsehoods about my family," Ana scathed.
"Oh, I should love to see that. What are you going to do, make mud pies like the babbling pathetic baby that you are? Oh, I know! Perhaps you'll say that I spread rumors about things I know nothing about and then assault people in the hallways. Wait, no, that's you, isn't it?" Ana cooed.
She really had been ready to go. Spilling coffee had been immature, but it had soothed her annoyance and she was prepared to move on with her day. Until Scarlett felt that throwing things was an appropriate response. "Oh, for fuck's sake, the hallway wasn't enough? Now you've taken to attacking me in the Great Hall," Ana declared loudly and melodramatically. It wasn't for Scarlett's benefit so much as it was those around Ana who were already staring. As Ana had learned since arriving after the summer, rumors spread quickly at Hogwarts, but it was high past time she used that to her advantage in the war she waged against Scarlett.

@Anastasia BeckettShe had about a second to revel in her small victory before they were snapping at each other again. It was not the best way to start her day, and she would be thoroughly grumpy for a while because of the unpleasant - to say the least - interaction she had with Beckett. One fight was enough, one bloody fight in the halls and then Scarlett thought they were done, resorting to words instead to show their disgust and contempt for each other. But no, Beckett just couldn't resist herself could she? Pouring coffee down Scarlett's robes and acting as if Scarlett started it. Attacking Scarlett in the corridors and acting as if Scarlett started it.
Because it's my fault someone tackled me and broke my nose, she thought to herself, frustrated. Because pretty, perfect Anastasia Beckett can't possibly attack someone, oh no. The victim must've been doing something so terrible, like talking! Shock horror! Talking! About things she had heard from other people! How scandalous!
"I personally take 'parents with class' as an insult, so yes, I do have parents with class," she snapped back. "How classy were your parents? They must've been terrible, raising a complete bitch like you. Didn't even stick around for you - they cared about you that much." Each word was laced with poison, a tone that conveyed utter disgust. "And please, you expect everyone at this school to be virtuous and angelic? I wasn't even the one who came up with the rumour in the first place! To be honest? This is a bit much coming from the girl who made the first move and attacked on sight."
"Babbling pathetic baby?" Scarlett laughed in contempt. "Who's the one cooing like a real baby?" She sneered. "And like I said, you were the one who made the first move and attacked me, so your points are invalid. I think it's time to stop talking and get your fucking memory checked."
So that was how Beckett wanted to play? Scarlett clenched her fists and glared at the girl. If she contradicted what Beckett had said about 'attacking her', then it would make seem like the weak victim who had gotten beaten up. If she didn't, then it would make her seem like the bad guy to everyone watching or listening in on their verbal - bordering on physical - fight.
"A bit rich coming from the one who tackled me," said Scarlett, in an equal volume to Beckett's declaration. "Y'know, it's odd how you were the one who poured coffee all over my robes and now you're acting as if I'm the wrongdoer. I get you're going through a hard time-" Scarlett paused, ready to unleash one of her weapons. "-what with how you murdered your parents, but this is going a bit too far, don't you think? I'm sorry for your loss, and I'm sure you must be grieving too, but all this-" She gestured to her robes, to the audience, to the toast. "-is borderline maniacal!" She shook her head and gave Beckett a sympathising look which she did not mean at all.
