The start of May was supposed to be a good thing.

April had been something of a nightmare to be forgotten as soon as possible, but May, Ruka told himself as he made his way down to the Great Hall to get some homework done while snacking on some fruit, was going to be full of positive things rather than one traumatising event after the other. It was going to be full of things he enjoyed, and he was going to continue his, admittedly wonky, path to proper self care. He had worked out a pretty good schedule for his eating habits, and he thought he was doing a pretty good job of taking care of himself in the most basic ways, but he was definitely still struggling with doing things for the sake of enjoyment.

Reading had been something he had really indulged in for the past month - The only thing he actually knew he enjoyed doing - but aside from that Ruka was having a difficult time finding things he liked doing that didn't necessarily involve fire and putting himself into reckless danger.

So maybe it was actually some good fortune to find the stacks of paper and drawing utensils spread out across the tables as he entered the Great Hall. At first Ruka thought they were there for people to actually just draw but as he made his way down the Gryffindor table in search of some free space, his eyes caught sight of what some of the people were actually doing with their papers.

Little folded animals were decorating the tables already, some more well done than others, and right there, in between the papers and pens, were the instructions on how to get them done.

Now, arts and crafts was something Ruka had never been particularly interested in; The closest he got to really creating something was wood work, but he didn't think there was much comparison between carving some wood and the delicate art of paper folding. He didn't exactly think himself patient and gentle enough for something like that, but...

As he sat down near the end of the table where nobody else had claimed a spot yet, Ruka reached out for the instructions, a small smile lighting up his face as he stared at the given possibilities. While it may have been other people's instinct to attempt doing their House animals, Ruka immediately skipped over the lion's instructions, instead focusing his attention on how to make his own little paper dragon.

He didn't need one, that was his first thought. There was no reason for why he would want a paper dragon cluttering up his space, and thus there was no reason to make one in the first place, but he managed to shake that thought with a little sigh. It wasn't about what he needed but about doing something. What else would he be doing with his time anyway?

Homework was what he had come for originally, but he was only missing Potions for the day, and he was good enough at the subject that he knew it wasn't going to take him much time to do it. And how long could it possibly take to fold a paper dragon, right? Just a few minutes of mindless enjoyment, and then he'd be able to go back to school work and whatever else he would find essential for his day.

"Alright then," he muttered to himself as he reached for some dark green paper.

The instructions looked confusing at first sight, especially considering he had never done anything like this before, but once he had struggled his way through to step five, he could feel the task getting simpler with each fold of his paper. This wasn't too bad, really, and it actually eased his mind a bit with the task of concentrating on not folding anything the wrong way. He hadn't imagined it to be this difficult, but as he reached for a second piece of paper to start over after causing a little rip in his first attempt, he realised that he had already been here a good twenty minutes and still didn't have a dragon to show for it.

Instead of getting impatient and frustrated with the task, as he expected to be, Ruka only found himself more determined to succeed, his focus sharpening with each slightly off fold. His ambitions had grown from attempting to make a vaguely recognisable paper dragon to doing everything he could to make the best damn paper dragon in the whole Great Hall in next to no time, so he found himself so concentrated on the task at hand, that he paid no attention at all to his surroundings anymore.

He could only hope that nobody was going to be approaching him anytime soon, because being startled would possibly just cause yet another mistake in Step Fourteen of his paper dragon.

Time: Early Afternoon
Day: May 10, 2020
Attempted Origami: Lion
It was kind of funny, how time seemed to have stopped lately for Lydia: since before the Blossom Ball, the days went by so quickly, the little grain of time slipping through her fingers as the date got closer and closer, but after that night, the sand of time seemed to have come to an halt. The different days had kind of morphed one into the other, and without even realising it, April was gone and May had taken its place, bringing both the nice weather with the hot wind, and the stormy clouds with their lightning storms.

Since that unfortunate night, Lydia had tried her best to just blend in with the crowd of students, trying not to draw the attention on her as much as she could, but she could only do so much; people knew that she was one of the organisers, and the fact that she appeared to be stuck with blue hair made it even more difficult for her to just disappear in the background. She hated that colour on her now, too bright and flashy, so different from her natural red hair that she loved so much; but it wasn't like she could just ask Aurelia to change them back, she also didn't know that many older students so it wasn't like she could solve that problem anytime soon.

That Sunday though, Lydia decided to walk down to the Great Hall to look for Alan; she knew he was a third year student, and hopefully he might have been able to help her with her hair. The moment that she stepped into the Great Hall, she noticed that some students were busy doing some kind of arts and crafts with paper, and if she would have been the same Lydia as before, she her eyes would have probably light up at the idea of taking part in such an activity; but not this time.

She sighed as she walked along the Gryffindor table, her eyes skimming over the faces of the students intent into their projects, as she tried her best to ignore some stares that she knew some of the other students were giving her. As she had walked past the first half of the table, the red blue haired girl felt the little hope of finding Alan there completely vanish, since the students got fewer and fewer the closer she walked towards the end of the table.

Feeling defeated and even sadder than before, Lydia sat down at the Hufflepuff table (that is next to the Gryffindor one), her back resting against it, as she let her eyes skim over the red and gold house's one. There were no familiar or friendly faces as far as she could tell, and she couldn't help but frown. To anyone that was not familiar with Lydia and her usual manners, she would have appeared like a rather grumpy girl, even though she was usually completely the opposite; but lately her usual smile had left space for a perpetual pout, her eyebrows knitted together, her face proven by the insomnia and not too healthy eating habits that she had lately developed. Someone close to her could have noticed these changes about her, but for people that did not know her, she might have looked completely normal.

She had almost given up on her search, when her eyes met a mass of dark red hair belonging to a rather small Gryffindor boy, and Lydia's hope came back a little: it was Ruka, the second year kid that was also at Willow's birthday party, the one that at the Blossom Ball had created those amazing torches as he had casted a rather powerful Incendio; if that Charm was an indication of how skilled the boy was at doing wand incantations, Lydia imagined that a simple colour change spell would have been quite easy for him.

She got up from the bench and slowly walked up to him, sitting then right next to him, as she gave him a small courtesy smile. "Hi, you're Ruka, aren't you?" she asked him, before looking at the different paper spread across the table. There was everything necessary to create pretty Origami, with instructions included, and Lydia decided that since she had gone all the way down to the Great Hall, at least she could have done something with her time; she took the instructions to create a paper lion (it was the first animal that had gotten her attention from the ones on the list) and the paper necessary to do it, before she looked back at the boy sitting next to her. "I'm Lydia, a friend of Willow and Alan..." she added, hoping that maybe this way, if he knew her, he would have not immediately connected her to the disastrous night of the Ball.

Working on his origami dragon turned out to be strangely relaxing. Maybe that was something Ruka could take up as a hobby sometime; It was challenging enough to keep him focused and in addition something he could do anywhere he wanted to and all by himself as well. Taking some paper to his dormitory shouldn't have been a difficult task, so he only needed to figure out how to get his hands on instructions.

Maybe he could take the ones from the table here? Would someone mind if one of them went missing? Or maybe he could just figure out who had organised this little arts and crafts lesson and ask them for more instructions?

A flicker of surprise shot through him at the thought; He couldn't remember the last time he had actually actively wanted to approach someone for anything. Was this what people felt when they went out of their way for social interaction? Ruka shook his head off the thought for now; There was enough time to ponder his own social needs once he had gotten past step number twenty-one of his paper dragon.

It was at that moment exactly, that a voice startled him out of that strange kind of inner peace he had found himself in, and his hands twitched just enough to cause a small tear in the paper he had been working with.

His face twisted into a mixture of rage and disappointment, bottom lip trembling slightly as he just stared at his ruined work. It had upset him enough that he barely registered the girl sitting down next to him, eyes too fixed on the destroyed paper to stray anywhere else. "My dragon," he murmured in grave disappointment before finally lifting his head to look at the Destroyer of Peace by his side.

The girl was familiar, if only vaguely. Ruka had seen her at Alan and Willow's birthday party, still with a head full of red hair, and then again at the Ball, that time with a blue mane which she still sported that day. He wasn't sure exactly why she had decided to change her hair colour into something this obvious, but he wasn't going to judge anybody by their appearance, so he decided not to even question it. Instead he focused more on the fact that he knew exactly which House she usually belonged in; Hufflepuff.

What was it with Hufflepuff girls being unable to stick to their own table and come to bother him while he was trying to enjoy his solitude instead? They were clearly all far too sociable for their own good, because much like Willow had done when they had first had a private conversation, this girl also did not waste any time before starting to talk to him like he had just forgotten about inviting her to join him.

Lydia, it seemed, knew Alan and Willow and his name, the latter of which making him feel a little uneasy with the sudden realisation that people may be talking about him while he wasn't around. What exactly had Willow and Alan told this girl about him that made her feel comfortable enough to just sit down next to him while he was clearly engaged in something that had nothing to do with her?

Before giving Lydia any more attention, Ruka reached for more paper, immediately throwing himself into the first few steps of the Paper Dragon, which he felt like he had memorised by now, after having redone them a few times already.

"Lydia," he said after taking a deep breath as if he had to mentally prepare himself for actually having a conversation. "What brings you... away from your own table?" He looked up from his paper for a moment to offer the Hufflepuff a forced little smile. He didn't really react to her words about being friends with Alan and Willow; It didn't mean much to him. While he knew both of them and had met them on various occasions, he didn't consider himself close enough to either of them to call them friends, and even if he had, there was no reason for him to interact with someone just because of mutual acquaintances.

He wondered, for a split second, if that was what had brought Lydia over to where he was; The sight of someone who knew the same people she did as well. Not wanting to question it, however, he did the only thing he actually felt like doing at that moment: Putting all his concentration back into folding his origami again.

Whether prompted or not, Ruka was sure that Lydia wouldn't hesitate to make her intentions clear to him soon enough either way.

Lydia watched closely as Ruka kept working on his origami as she sat next to him, the instructions to create a paper lion right in front of her; her face twisted in a shocked and kind of horrified expression when the boy, startled by her voice, broke his creation, his bottom lip trembling. "I- I'm so sorry," she murmured, looking down at her hands as she frowned. What had she thought, walking up like that to someone that was clearly deeply concentrated on their task? That would have startled anyone!

Lydia sighed and started working on her own origami, since Ruka appeared to concentrate again on his own (and with every right, since she had just destroyed his dragon). The first few steps were not that difficult, and she managed to reach step 6 without any problems, but then the little parts to flip and fold started becoming smaller and more frequent, and it looked like Lydia had a difficult time concentrating on the next step.

When Ruka finally talked to her, she put down the half-lion and looked at him; she wanted to ask him to change her hair colour back to normal, but for some kind of reason - most likely because she felt guilty for accidentally breaking his origami - she couldn't ask him that out of the blue. "Well, I was looking for Alan, " she said and then noticed how Ruka, instead of looking at her as she talked, simply went back to his paper creation. That left Lydia a little bit surprised, and she wondered if he was even listening to her as he folded his paper; she figured that he was, otherwise he wouldn't have asked her a question, would he? "I wanted to ask him a favour, if maybe he could have changed my hair back to their original colour, since he is a third year and probably knows the spell to do that, but I couldn't find him; "

As she talked, the Hufflepuff girl went back as well to work on her origami, and finally managed to proceed in the steps, reaching the 10th quite easily, before she continued talking. "I was actually sitting at my table, when I saw you. I know that, since you're not in any of my classes, you're not a first year, and since at the Ball you had casted that powerful Incendio..." Lydia said, her face and voice emptier as she talked about the events of the Blossom Ball, "well, I figured that maybe I didn't need to ask Alan for help, but maybe I could have asked you,"

Lydia knew that her request was completely random and came out of nowhere, especially since that was the very first time she had ever spoken with the Gryffindor boy, but she tried not to think too much about that; all she wanted was for her hair to be a normal colour again, for every trace of that stupid ball to disappear and leave her alone, once and for all.

She nervously bit down on her bottom lip, as she tried not to talk to much, but then she just couldn't hold back her words. "I'm sorry that this is so random, I just- I need this freaking blue colour gone." after that, she decided to finish her origami, and she concentrated back on the final steps. She carefully folded the paper, creating the leg and the paw, and once she was done, she drew a cute face for the lion. As she looked at it, Lydia tried to make a little bit of small talk with Ruka. "So... do you like Quidditch?" she asked him, as she set down her finished origami. "I started liking it only recently, but just because I have two friends- Oh, I actually don't know what Rafa and I are right now..." Lydia said the last part quietly, more to herself than to Ruka, as she frowned slightly. "but yeah, I kind of like it now, since my best friend Aaron is on the Hufflepuff team,"

At the very least, Ruka thought as he looked at Lydia's horrified expression, the Hufflepuff girl seemed genuinely apologetic about approaching him out of the blue while he was in the middle of concentrating on something as delicate as paper folding. He sighed softly as he shook his head as if to show the girl that she didn't need to be sorry; His work was already broken and her words weren't going to fix it.

For a second he considered simply casting a repairing charm on the paper, but it felt somewhat like cheating, so he decided against it. No, he was going to be able to finish this dragon without any magical aid, even if it seemed like the task had grown evermore difficult now that he had someone next to him that had clearly taken his rhetorical question as an invitation to talk to him about her struggle of the day.

With a little hum, Ruka lifted his head, fingers carefully flattening the edges of his dragon as he looked up and down the table to see if maybe he could spot Alan somewhere in the crowd and direct Lydia his way - preferably far away from his own little spot of solitude - but he had no such luck. Instead he needed to take a deep breath, preparing himself for the conversation he was supposed to engage in now that the girl had outwardly asked him for a favour. A part of him - the part that had probably spent far too much time with Jack since they first met - was about to ask her what she was going to do for him in return should he change her hair colour back to normal, but before he could say anything about exchanging a favour for a favour she had already continued talking, as if she just couldn't stop herself from elaborating every little detail of her request.

Frankly, Ruka had no interest in why she wanted her hair changed back, didn't know her at all so didn't feel like it was any of his business in the first place, but from what he had learned from Hufflepuffs so far, the all had a terrible tendency to overshare.

"You just want your hair colour changed back?" he asked after she had explained in too much detail why exactly she had approached him once she was unable to find Alan, and he set his half done dragon down on the table for a second to draw his wand from the inside pocket of his cloak. It sounded like there was no other reason for Lydia being here than to seek out someone who was able to cast a counter curse on her hair, so maybe, once he had done that for her, she would just quietly return to her table.

Without saying much else, Ruka flicked his wrist, tip of his wand pointed at the side of the girl's head where her blue hair covered her ear in a delicate wave. "Finite Incantatem," he murmured, sighing in something like relief as he watched the blue of Lydia's hair giving way to the natural, vibrant red he had seen her with back at Alan and Willow's birthday party. "There, that's better now, isn't it?" He stretched his lips into a small smile, casting a quick look towards the Hufflepuff table as if he expected the girl next to him to just materialise over there now that her request was fulfilled.

It seemed, however, that she felt like she needed to keep up a conversation now that they had that task behind them, because as Ruka returned to finish the last few steps of his dragon, Lydia asked him about Quidditch.
He would have answered too, just to be somewhat polite despite the fact that she didn't seem in the slightest aware of the fact that she was destroying his only just newfound inner peace. He was going to have to take a lot of paper back to his dorm if he wanted to be able to make enough origami to return to that calm state he had achieved a few minutes ago.

Yes, he would have answered, but before he could even open his mouth to respond she had already kept talking to answer her own question for herself as if Ruka had been the one to ask her instead of the other way around. "Rafa?" he asked in vague interest, the only word in her little monologue that actually caught his attention. He tried his best to think of the ball; He had seen Rafa with Lydia there, but not for long before he seemed to wander off to seemingly any other girl in his vicinity, handing out roses and dances like he was passing around promotional flyers. "You keep interesting friends. How come you're not sure what you and Rafa are? Did him going date-hopping back at the Ball put a bit of a damper on your relationship or was it his tendency to throw punches at the slightest provocation?" He smirked spitefully as he folded the last corner of his dragon, beaming proudly at his creation once it was finally done.

It hadn't taken him that much longer than it had taken Lydia for her lion, which he saw as a success considering his instructions had been one of the longest out of all of them. The fact that this had been what he believed to be his fourth attempt probably helped speed the process along this time, as well.

Setting the finished paper dragon down in front of him, he turned to face Lydia with a bemused smile. "I hope for your sake that this Aaron has better manners and more brains than your boyfriend. It'd probably be a good thing to have a decent friend around once Rafa inevitably crushes your tiny heart in his brutish fists."

Lydia hadn't expected Ruka to simply, well, change her hair back to their normal colour right there, so she was surprised when the boy simply performed the spell, her hair going back to their natural lovely red. She gave Ruka a small smile just as she reached with one hand for her hair, lifting some up just to observe the strawberry shades she had missed so much. "Thank you, I- that was really nice of you," she said, and for a brief second, Lydia felt like everything would have been alright.

It was only for a second though, because then a voice in her head reminded her that things would have not gone back to normal, that she would have not been the same anymore, that the only thing that wouldn't have changed was the fact that she was a disaster before the Ball just like after. Lydia frowned and looked down at her hands, her head filling up with negative thoughts; she should have probably just walked back to her dorm now that she had gotten what she wanted, but still, there she was, trying to make small talk with a boy that didn't seem that interested in talking in the first place.

She had almost gotten up, not wanting to bother Ruka anymore, when the boy answered her. It wasn't the answer she was expecting to hear though; on the contrary, Ruka's words hurt her more than she actually allowed herself to admit. Lydia looked at the boy, slightly confused, as she clenched her jaw; how dared he talk about her relationship with Rafael, when he didn't even know who Lydia was, or what exactly was going on between them? Hell, she didn't even know what was happening with the Gryffindor Captain, so how could Ruka possibly know?

She let him talk though, wanting to see what else he had to say, and she found herself slightly rolling her eyes when he warned her about Rafael breaking her heart, just like Aurelia had done back in the changing rooms. "First of all," Lydia said as she turned her whole body towards the boy, her whole face glaring at him, "Rafael is not my boyfriend. Second, how can you speak of him this way, assuming what he will do as if you just know him so well?"

The red headed girl took a deep breath, the muscles in her neck tense from her getting angry again. She had never been the kind of person to get angry and upset easily, but lately more and more things annoyed her and upset her, making her snap the same way that she would snap at her little sister during an argument.

"It is true that Rafa wasn't... particularly chivalrous at the ball, and I admit that his behaviour had hurt me. But at the same time, we had- he never said it was a date, so it was my fault," Lydia said, even though she didn't sound too sure about the last part. Had it really been all her fault?

Ruka's next words left Lydia more upset than before, and if that wasn't enough, his stupid smirk made it all look like as if it was big, fun joke to him. "You think it's fun, talking badly about other people and trashing over someone else's relationship, as if you are better than them?" she asked, her voice hard. She almost didn't recognise herself as she spoke, but she didn't care anymore. It was as if all of the emotions she had tried to bottle down, all of the feelings that had kept rushing over her in the past couple of weeks had come back all together, all of a sudden, and she wasn't able to control them anymore. "You think you know who Rafael is, just because he started a fight at a ball, or because he has a bit of a temper? Have you ever actually taken the time to get to know him, before judging him?"

Lydia knew that the fact that Rafael had a temper was not good, but she also knew that he was way more than that, whether she was upset with him or not she knew he wasn't a bad person. "Because if you did, then you would realised that he is a good person and he cares about the people he loves. Also, what is it that everyone just assumes that he breaks people's hearts everywhere he goes?"

Lydia stared at Ruka, her eyes fixed into his as if to challenge him. If he wanted to talk badly about Rafael, then she would have made sure to defend him. It didn't matter that she was still hurt by how he treated her that night, he was still someone that she cared about, and she wouldn't have let anyone talk badly about him in front of her.

Lydia's words of gratitude were met by Ruka with a curt nod, a slight cringe at the acknowledgement of how nice it had been of him to simply change her hair colour back to normal, as if he had done it out of the goodness of his heart rather than in anticipation of her swift departure.

Had he paid more attention to the girl next to him, he would have probably asked what it was that made her look this glum all of a sudden, despite her issue being fixed, but as it were, Ruka had simply turned his attention back to his origami dragon, his whole focus on the folded paper instead of Lydia who's internal crisis went completely past him like she wasn't even there to begin with. He would have been slightly disappointed in his own lack of observational skills, but he had no real interest in people at this moment; Everything he really wanted to do was finish his dragon and take it back to his dorm room where it would be able to sit and look nice on his bedside table for however long it took for the paper to start smudging and crumpling up.

However, he was in no such luck today, clearly, because it seemed like out of the few things Lydia had said to him, he had managed to pick out the one topic she was apparently most sensitive about: Rafael D'Spacito.

He should have known, did know subconsciously most likely. He should have just let it go, let the mention of the name pass him by without another word. Once Lydia had noticed his lack of participation in the conversation she would have probably found a polite excuse to remove herself from the table and he could have just continued his little arts and crafts session by himself, but no.

No, he had to go and be an idiot, prodding at touchy subjects like they were a magnet and he a pointy needle. It wasn't at all unlike the time he had met Willow at almost this exact same spot and she had mentioned Flash in passing. He remembered his emotions taking over him as he went on a rant about Flash's manipulative ways, shot out tactless warnings about how he wasn't going to stick around for just the sake of her friendship.

History did have the tendency to repeat itself and Ruka clearly wasn't good at learning from mistakes.

So here he was, caught in a conversation his mind didn't want him to retreat from. Just like Willow had been about Flash, Lydia seemed intent on defending Rafa from all of Ruka's accusations, despite the fact that she clearly had her own doubts about the Gryffindor boy. How couldn't she, after the disaster at the ball? Ruka had not been near Rafa or Lydia a lot, but even he had been able to notice the way Rafa seemed to swing himself from one date to the next for no apparent reason.

It would have hurt anybody's feelings.

"Ah, taking the blame for his actions," he said, rolling his eyes at her. "How very Hufflepuff of you." Aside from Lydia's fellow housemates, Ruka knew of another person who tended to destroy himself by taking responsibility and blame each time other people hurt his feelings. Maybe the Sorting Hat had made a grave mistake in putting Flash in Slytherin; Maybe Hufflepuff would have been more suiting.

If it wasn't for his gross manipulative tendencies, of course. It obviously wasn't an action that made a person, but the motivation behind it.

"What makes you think I don't know him that well?" he questioned her words with raised eyebrows, placing a hand over his heart as if her suggestion that he didn't know Rafa well enough to judge him had offended his sensibilities. "For all you know I could be his closest confidant." He snorted lightly at the suggestion, shaking his head to himself. There was no need to explain himself to Lydia, it had no impact on his life whether she believed his words or not.

Except...

He shook his head again, this time at his own thoughts, before focusing his attention back on Lydia, frowning at her suggestion to try and get to know Rafa to realise there was more to him as a person than infidelity and violence. Maybe that was true, maybe there was a part of Rafa that was the sweetest boy on the planet, but did that really excuse and righten all the things he had done that Ruka had witnessed and been victim to himself so far?

"A bit of a temper," he repeated Lydia's words, stifling his laughter behind his hand. "That has to be the understatement of the century." He rolled his eyes as he folded his hands in his lap and straightened his back as if to prepare himself mentally and physically for the rest of that conversation.

"I've seen Rafa punch my-" He stopped himself for a moment as if to rethink his sentence before continuing. "Punch someone I care about right in the face completely unprovoked. Right over there." He made a vague gesture towards the middle of the Gryffindor table. "Bent him over the table and started throwing punches for no reason." With a little shrug as if it didn't matter much anymore anyway, Ruka looked away to instead admire his little dragon for a moment. He had seen some other kids getting their finished creations bewitched to move and wondered if he could ask someone to do the same.

Not right now, however.

Right now he was still caught up in a conversation with Lydia that required some more of his attention.

"If that's what you call a bit of a temper I have to wonder if you maybe have just as much of a violent nature as he does." He hummed thoughtfully, looking back at Lydia with a suggestive smirk curling his lips. "Maybe that's exactly what makes him interesting to you?" he asked, a spark of genuine curiosity in his eyes. "Maybe you think it's really exciting that he could beat someone bloody with his bare hands at any given moment?" He chuckled, leaning a bit closer to be able to observe Lydia's facial expressions properly. "If that's the case, you should probably see someone about that, it doesn't sound like a healthy kind of attraction."

Lydia clenched her jaw at Ruka's comment about her being so Hufflepuff, almost as if it was a bad thing to be a decent human being and care about other people's feelings. She never understood the hate and almost disgust that some students had towards her House and fellow Badgers, after all there were worse things than being friendly and hard workers. But she figured that Ruka didn't care about that.

Actually, from what she had the opportunity to notice, Ruka didn't seem the kind of kid that would spend time with friends, chatting around and socialising. On the contrary, at first he had looked kind of annoyed with her and bored, and only now that the conversation topic had shifted towards the Gryffindor Captain, Lydia saw a tiny bit of interest (or was it simply a spark of un-boredom?) in the boy's eyes.

"I’m not taking the blame for his actions, but for mine. I assumed it was a date, without even checking first. I don't see anything wrong with that, and I definitely don't get how that would be so Hufflepuff of me." she said, her voice still hard. As Lydia answered Ruka, she took her time to properly study the boy. The first thing she noticed was that he was tiny; they were probably the same age, but Lydia was at least five centimetres taller than him. His hair were long, messy and without a proper cut; a scar was quite visible on his forehead, just like those that were scattered across the boy’s arms and hands.

Lydia frowned at the sight, wondering what even happened to Ruka to be covered that much in scars; the one on his forehead was clearly different from the others, it looked more like the kind of scar one might get when they bump into something. But those on the arms? They were everywhere, covering the skin and creating a labyrinth of patterns that made Lydia uncomfortable. She had an idea of what might have caused them, her memory triggered by the image of an old lady with similar scars: she was a friend of her grandma, and she had told her that when she was younger she had found herself in the middle of a fire.

A shiver went down the girl’s spine as she imagined what might have happened to Ruka, and she had to look away from the scars, her eyes fixing on a necklace in the shape of a lively flame. It looked incredibly pretty, the different coloured gold parts blending together so well. It looked kind of funny on the red headed boy, the contrast between something so elegant like the necklace and the messy, uncut hair strong. Another detail that stood out? Ruka’s shoes were clean. But not in a normal way; they were spotless, as if the boy had passed a lot of time taking care of them, almost maniacally even.

Lydia was taken back to reality by Ruka’s voice, and she couldn’t help the cold stare she gave him as he, yet again, snorted as if the whole conversation was the funniest thing in the world for him, stirring up the urge in the red headed girl to just punch him in the face. Maybe that way his stupid smirk would have gone away.

Or he might even like that.

She randomly thought; after all, who knew how the boy had gotten those scars? Was there something incredibly wrong going on inside the Gryffindor kid?

The more the conversation continued, the more Ruka laughed, and the more Lydia just wanted to make that stupid laugh go away. She clenched her fists on her lap as she bit down on her bottom lip, the faint taste of blood meeting her tongue. It was better that way though, otherwise she might have punched Ruka right there in the Great Hall.

When Ruka started talking about Rafael's temper, and how he was way worse than Lydia thought, a little detail caught the girl's attention. Ruka had suddenly, but subtly, stopped himself mid sentence before continuing, something that the girl had not seen him do yet. She raised an eyebrow as a lot of questions filled her head: Rafa had punched someone Ruka cared about, someone that the red headed boy was not able - or allowed- to label properly; was it a friend, a boyfriend, a family member?

This time it was Lydia's turn to snort as Ruka said that Rafael had no reason to punch that person. "Oh, I'm pretty sure that Raf had his reasons. After all, how can you be so sure that this... friend of yours had not provoked him, and maybe omitted to tell you? It seems like, since you can't even find the right words to define who this person is to you, you might want to reconsider what they tell you. How can you trust them, if you can't even call them your friend, or anything really?"

It was as if this change in Lydia's whole person, this shift that had started all the way back in March when she had discovered the truth about her mother, had properly shown itself now, after the disastrous events of the Ball. She didn't feel sad, only upset and kind of numb, as if she had something cold growing and expanding in the middle of her chest. Lydia's voice was cold, hard, so unlike her; her face was set in a weird smile, it wasn't warm, or inviting, but cold and kind of mean, but nonetheless still beautiful.

But, after all, everything beautiful is ruined eventually.

Ruka's next words kind of shocked her, sending the smile away from her face for a second. She had never considered herself a violent person, quite the opposite; she was calm, friendly and always thought before doing anything. But at the same time, there was something inside of her, some kind of urge to vengeance that always came up whenever she had an argument with someone that upset her; it was as if a voice in her mind - it usually sounded like her grandmother- told her that she needed to get revenge for how they were treating her, that she needed to make sure to hurt them like they hurt her. Or course, up until now nobody had ever hurt Lydia, the worst that someone had ever done was telling her that they didn't want to be friends with her.

But Ruka? This boy was just able to pick at all the right strings to make the part-vela girl upset.

"You know," she said as she put on a fake smile, not backing away when Ruka got closer to her, but actually getting slightly closer as well. "Maybe I do. I wouldn't say that it's exciting, but at least he can defend and take care of himself. she said and then pointed towards Ruka's scars with a finger "Also, I'm not the only one that should talk to someone about unhealthy behaviours. Your scars alone should make any teacher or, you know, parent worry, with how many of them you have. Judging by the amount and the fact that some look more recent than others, I'd say you have a really unhealthy habit going on Ruka. That and your subtle obsession over clean shoes,"

With that, Lydia winked at him and moved back a little, her eyes going back over the necklace that hung from the boy's neck, a sudden realisation hitting her. "Or maybe it's not an obsession, the one you have for the shoes, not completely at least..." she said, mostly to herself, as she kept staring at the necklace. Maybe Ruka took good care of the shoes cause they were somehow important to him; he didn't seem to care too much about his hair, or his skin judging by the scars; the only other thing that stood out was the shiny, clean and well taken care of necklace hanging from his neck. Was there a connection between it and the shoes? If so, which one?

"Nice necklace, by the way,"

Lydia's words were predictable at best, and for a second Ruka could feel himself drifting back into a sense of boredom, but the mere fact that he had an opportunity to tell this girl about Rafa felt like an opportunity he didn't want to pass up on. It was a topic that had purpose somehow, and Ruka wasn't going to quit just because the girl he was talking to was incapable of seeing things his way.

"It was a ball," he said, voice drawn out, rolling his eyes as if it was the most obvious thing in the world to consider. "If it wasn't supposed to be a date he should have specified rather than leaving you for... every other girl on the premises halfway through." He chuckled as if the memory was somewhat amusing, but he decided not to take that conversation any further. The badger girl already looked like she would have been more than happy to punch him, and he didn't exactly want that kind of impact.

Ruka could feel the girl's eyes on him, as if she was trying to find something on his face and body that she could somehow use against him, but rather than shying from her scrutinising gaze, he shuffled around a bit to face her more properly, rolling up the sleeves of his cloak slightly as well so she would get a better look at the scars hiding beneath. There was nothing he felt like he needed to hide, so why not put it all out on the table for the girl next to him?

He was arguably less of a mess than he used to be just a couple of months ago, had even managed to gain some weight, but he was aware of the fact that his whole appearance made for some striking contradictions. Where his hair was a tad too long and untidily sticking out on the sides where he had tried to use a knife to cut away the bits that had grown to an uncomfortable length, his clothes were taken care of to an almost ridiculous degree; Where his skin was covered in old burn marks and scars, the necklace dangling from his neck was freshly polished and may as well have only just been picked up from the jeweller.

Lydia didn't use any of that information, however, at least not yet. She seemed to first want to focus on Ruka's little slip up with words, reading far more into the fact that he had stopped himself from labelling a relationship than anybody else ever had or was probably ever going to. For some reason she felt that being unable to define the relationship you had with someone meant you couldn't trust them, and the notion made Ruka raise his eyebrows inquisitively.

"Maybe you should listen to yourself and consider what a hypocrite you're being," he pointed out lightly, waving his hand dismissively as if her words didn't even matter to him. They didn't much, really. He knew who he was able to trust, and her petty words didn't evoke even a second of doubt in him. "You started this conversation off saying you didn't know what you and Rafa are exactly, and yet here you are, defending him like your life depended on it. If you're so sure that he has a reason for every single time he loses his temper, why are you even arguing with me about it?" He shrugged, a grin still ever present on his face.

This conversation was actually turning out to be quite fun.

He was almost a little impressed when the girl next to him curled her lips in a clearly fake smile and leaned closer rather than backing away from his own gaze, but her words only made him let out yet another laugh, amusement dancing in his green irises. "Do you know how to take care of yourself, then? Or do you need him for that?" A challenging smirk pulled at his lips, but he let her keep talking rather than saying any more about that, let her continue on about his own unhealthy habits as if they were some sort of new revelation to him.

"Guess my parents are too busy to notice," he said with yet another dismissive wave of his hand. Too busy being not around and, well, dead, but he didn't say that. The conversation would turn to pity for him, and it would ruin all the entertainment.

He didn't bother defending himself against her accusation of being obsessed with cleaning his shoes; So what if he spent a lot of time on making sure they stayed in pristine condition? Now that he actually had a nice, comfortable pair of shoes he was going to do all he could to make sure he was going to be able to wear them for as long as possible. Explaining that to her, however, would have meant digging into his own backstory, and that was in no way where he wanted to take this conversation.

Sighing lightly as if disappointed when she pulled back, he almost instinctively reached up to wrap a hand around the flame pendant of his necklace, like he was trying to somehow shield it from the Hufflepuff's gaze. The way she was looking at it made him feel like she was trying to figure out how it fit into the bigger picture of the mess he otherwise displayed to be, and it almost made him feel a little uncomfortable.

"Jealous there aren't any boys giving you expensive jewellery?" He asked with raised eyebrows when she commented on the necklace, an almost arrogant smile spreading on his face as he said the words. "Don't worry, I'm sure Rafa will learn to be attentive enough to get you some flowers someday."

This whole conversation with Ruka was not going as Lydia thought it would. When she had approached him, she had imagined some small talk, him hopefully helping her out, and then, once she would have been done with her origami, she would have gone back to her dorm room, leaving the boy alone. She definitely didn’t think that it would have turned out to be some kind of argument/psychoanalysis session.

The words of the red headed boy regarding Rafael’s behaviour at the ball hurt Lydia; it wasn’t though the fact that he had omitted to tell her wether it was a date or not, but rather him leaving her when she had clearly told him she needed to speak with him. That, and Ruka’s freaking chuckle, of course.

What was even his problem, how could he find that funny?

Lydia had never liked rude people, mostly because she never understood them; how could someone be rude to another person, how could they just treat someone else badly? She had tried imagining herself in the shoes of someone that was acting rude, but she always felt too bad for the other imaginary person. So the fact that Ruka, a boy that she didn’t know and that didn’t know her, was laughing at something that, clearly, was bothering her made the red headed girl upset even more.

The more he talked and chuckled, the more his words hurt the young girl; they were as sharp as blades, digging into her mind and making her feel even worse than how she had been feeling lately.

What made everything worse as well, was the fact that Ruka was right. Lydia was being extremely hypocritical, but at the same time she felt as if she wasn’t: she knew that she was friends with Rafael - she just didn’t know if the boy liked her as much as she liked him- while Ruka apparently didn’t even know if they were friends with this other person. She had almost told him that, but his next words made her stop in her tracks.

“Do you know how to take care of yourself, then? Or do you need him for that?”

Well that- that hit right home.

To anyone that knew Lydia a little bit, the girl that had been walking around the castle’s corridors lately was not the same person, but an empty, gloomy shell of her. She was clearly unable to take care of herself, even if she had been trying so hard, ever since that day in the Trophy Room; going to classes, eating meals, sleeping, socialising, she had been doing everything that any other student would do, but being only twelve, the amount of stress she could manage had reached its limit pretty soon, culminating during the night of the Blossom Ball.

Lydia didn’t think too much of Ruka’s comment about his parents; she kept looking at him, the small, fake smile now gone from her face. When the Gryffindor boy spoke again, his face showed again an arrogant smile, and Lydia clenched her fists hard, the urging need to punch him just to see that irritating grin gone stronger and stronger. "I don't want any expensive jewellery," she said, her voice harsh as she looked down at her fists. Ruka's comment about Rafael possibly giving her flowers in the future brought back the memories from the ball, when the Quidditch Captain had given her an extremely pretty bouquet of roses, right before he started ignoring her and going after other girls.

As she thought about those moments, Lydia was flooded again by all the anger and frustration that she had felt back then; those feelings added to the present ones, making the girl's muscles tense up, as angry tears started forming in her eyes. All she wanted to do was let out that resentment -towards Rafael, towards Ruka, towards herself- and hopefully fell good again.

Lydia forced herself to look back up again at Ruka, ready to say goodbye to him and just run away from there; she didn't want him, or anyone else, see her cry, so she had no intention of staying any longer in the crowded Hall. The moment her eyes landed on the smirking boy, Lydia felt the intense urge to punch him grow bigger and stronger; how freaking dared him, smiling and having fun over her problems! She imagined clenching her right fist hard, moving her arm and bringing said fist all the way towards the boy's nose; she could see it clearly, almost in slow motion, and she mentally scolded herself, that was so not how Aaron had showed her to keep her thumb while trowing a punch. Just imagining doing that brought so much satisfaction to the girl, but then-

Then she felt a sharp pain in her right hand, specifically her thumb.

Lydia widened her eyes in shock, as she realised that she didn't just imagine punching Ruka on the nose, she had actually done that - and potentially broke her thumb in the process.
