Scaly Papery Friends
Open to anyone wanting to do the Original Oragami Errand
Katrina somehow found herself in the great hall. Wandering around had been a sort of past time of hers lately. It was nice just to float and drift from one room to another without worrying about getting lost. When she entered the great room, the first thing she noticed were the few groups of people bent over things. Upon closer inspection, she found that the 'things' were small origami animals.
Origami! She had never been good with little pieces of paper, but now would be a fun time to learn.
There were a multitude of stacked brightly colored papers on the tables. A red, almost scaly textured one caught her eye. Katrina made her way over to it and inspected the paper closer, it was about the size of her hand, thin like all origami paper was. It was the red design that reminded her distantly of a dragon.
Dragons had always been on of the lioness' most fascinating discoveries upon entering the magical world. Their frightening size paired with amazing fire breath and wings that intrigued her. If only she could ride one, that was a lifetime goal that she yearned for. The thrill of the wind and sky with the clouds hovering below you. Weightless and drifting where even the birds don't fly. What she would give to do that.
Katrina took a few steps down the bench and took a seat. She stared at the paper for a very long time. So long, in fact, that if anyone saw her, they would clearly see that she had absolutely no clue how to do origami.
Katrina drew her sketchbook from her leather satchel, she slid the pencil out from the binding and flipped to an open page. She drew a simple dragon. A head, four legs, wings, fire breathing mouth. If one were to look through her journal, they would find that there were numerous drawings, many of which were dragons. They would also see that she had fantastic talent as well.
Noise from a group huddled down the bench caught her attention. A house elf stood looking somewhat pleased with himself. On the table was a moving breathing (ish) origami unicorn brought to life. It pranced around the table a few steps before whinnying and kicking its front legs in the air.
A hushed, "Wow" of awe escaped her lips.
Magic was so unbelievable. Katrina looked back to the dragon on her sketchbook page and back to her untouched red paper. She could have a living paper dragon! If only she knew how to do origami.

The Great Hall
When Cass heard that someone left origami paper all over the dining tables, she quickly made her way down to the Great Hall to see for herself. A long time ago, when she was half her age, her cousin Lili had shown her how to fold strips of paper into little stars. It was an activity they often did together after school, and Lili would keep each star they made in a jar on her desk. The fond memory had Cass wishing she could make something like that one more time. Reminiscence aside, the art of folding paper to create something beautiful again was an opportunity she didn't want to pass up.
Upon entering the Great Hall, she realized that person wasn't kidding. Stacks of origami were piled up on each house table. Some students had already begun folding. Cass even spotted a tiny paper giraffe galloping around a boy's homework, much to his classmates' amusement. It was all too adorable, and Cass couldn't wait to get started.
She found a seat at the Gryffindor table, next to a girl she recognized to be in her year. "Mind if I sit here?" she asked politely, remaining on her feet as she waited permission. The girl had a piece of red paper in front of her, untouched. There was also a sketchbook opened to a page with a drawing of a dragon, its jaw wide open as it breathed fire on an unseen victim. "Wow, that's really good," Cass couldn't help complimenting, her eyes roving over the page in appreciation. "I'm bad with drawing creatures, anything with more than two legs is too complicated for me."
Suddenly, Cass looked between the sketchbook and the untouched paper. Her eyes widened. "Are you going to make an origami dragon?" she asked, astounded. That would be really cool, Cass thought to herself, especially with the house-elf's magic. Inspired, Cass began to think of what she wanted to make. A lion seemed like the obvious choice, but birds were always more of her favorite animal. It would be magical to see a paper bird come to life and fly above her. She looked around and spotted instructions on folding a raven. Perfect.
She reached out to grab the instruction sheet, reading through it and contemplating on the level of difficulty before deciding it seemed doable enough.

Katrina looked up from her still untouched origami paper to see a girl coming down the aisle with the same excited expression that Katrina had when seeing a blank page to draw upon. She had dark brown hair with matching eyes. Her skin was tanned- and with her, she carried an aura of happiness. Almost the exact opposite of me, Katrina couldn't help but think.
The lioness tucked the teal streak in her auburn hair behind her ear and looked intently at her dragon drawing. She refined it to more of an origami dragon shape and added paper lines. The result was magnificent even though there was no chance that she would be able to create that dragon.

The girl walked up and looked over Katrina's shoulder at the drawing. "Mind if I sit here?"
Katrina looked up, "Sure," Katrina vaguely recognized the girl as a fellow Gryffindor, most likely a first year whom she simply hadn't run into.
She complimented Katrina's drawing and a spark of pride flared in her chest, "Thanks" The red-head offered a laugh at her comment of not drawing anything with more than two legs. It had taken her a really long time to get this good at drawing.
"Are you going to make an origami dragon?" The girl's eyes were wide in an emotion that Katrina identified as astonishment.
"Well, that's my far-fetched goal. Most likely I'll just end up with a large mound of crumpled paper." Katrina found herself smiling, "The only artistic thing I'm good at is drawing," She admitted that with a sad smile.
The girl spotted a paper and pulled it close. The 12-year-old found herself looking to see that it was an instruction sheet for an origami raven. She realized with amusement that there were dozens of papers spread down the table for instructions. How had she not seen it before? Her eyes surveyed the papers and she found one that looked like flames. She pulled the paper from under a few others and found with a bright smile of delight that it was a dragon.
"Yes!" Katrina's eyes scoured the page, it looked incredibly difficult but she could do it. It was only paper anyway wasn't it?

Cass took her seat, an apologetic smile on her face. "Sorry," she said, "I know sketchbooks can be personal." She reached into her bag, pulling out her own worn book. Sketches of her family, the large tree behind Tita Vanessa's house, the mugs that often littered their kitchen counters, the cobblestone streets of her hometown, and other little doodles of her life back in Norwich filled the off-white pages of her black spiral-bound book. Flipping through them all, she tilted it slightly so the girl could see it. "I like to draw too, but I'm only just getting started."
It wasn't on Cass's agenda today to show a stranger her humble doodles, but something told her the girl would connect with it. At least, she hoped so.
"The only artistic thing I'm good at is drawing," said the fellow Gryffindor girl. Cass turned away in thought.
"For now," she replied simply, picking a piece of blue paper for herself. "You won't know until you try." The paper crinkled in her hands as she bent over it, folding carefully so the corners aligned as close as possible. Satisfied, she examined the instruction sheet once more before attempting the next step. "Based on what I saw, you either have a natural talent or you worked hard to get to the level you are now. Either way, it was something you had to discover for yourself."
Cass glanced to her side, making brief eye-contact with the redhead. A streak of teal she hadn't noticed before was tucked behind one ear. She smiled. "Anything's worth a shot."

Katrina further examined the instructions paper, her brow furrowing as she tried to understand all the arrows. She gingerly took the red piece of paper and did the first fold, she pressed the crease firmly with her finger nail and observed her work. One fold. It was surprising the excitement that was building up inside of her over one simple motion.
The girl, whom Katrina made a mental note of asking her name, mentioned sketchbooks being personal. Katrina watched with a spark of delight as she drew out her own book. She flipped through them tilting the pages so Katrina could see. She drew things that appeared to have sentimental value, the same that Katrina did most of the time. Respect blossomed in Katrina's chest, this girl was one of the first she had met that drew too.
"You're a great artist," Katrina commented, a smile playing on her lips.
The girl made her first fold while saying, "Based on what I saw, you either have a natural talent or you worked hard to get to the level you are now. Either way, it was something you had to discover for yourself." She did have a good point. Katrina pursed her lips and looked back at the sheet. Maybe she could discover that making tiny scaly papery dragons was one of her innate strengths.
The girl smiled at Katrina, "Anything's worth a shot," With those words echoing in her mind, Katrina began the next step. Another simple fold, that one was done much faster, but the result was just as good.
Again and again Katrina checked the instructions and dutifully folded out the next step. Occasionally she would let out a happy squeak when she completed a difficult part or disappointed murmur when a fold went wrong. The more she folded, the more it began to take shape. The body, then the wings, then the tail. It was painstakingly slow compared to furtive glances at other groups of people around her, but she still continued on.
When Katrina was on the last step she turned to the girl, "Look, look! An overly excited smile was on her face. "I did it, only one more fold!" Katrina was hardly ever happy. Sure, she had moments where she wasn't sad, but this was the first in a while that Katrina had felt this raw of an emotion. She supposed numbing of emotions is a side effect of mourning. But, in any case, she was really proud of her little dragon.
"I saw one of the house elves enchanting them to actually move and walk around earlier. Do you think if I asked one to help that they'd do it? Imagine if it could breathe really tiny fire!" Katrina's eyes sparks with long hidden mischievousness. "When you're done we should ask,"
Katrina smiled as she folded the last step. Her little friend was complete. A perfect tiny scaly paper friend was sitting proudly on the table. She had done it!

It's not common for Cass to share something about herself so willingly, especially with someone she'd just met, but as she tucked her sketchbook away she realized she was glad to do it. The girl seemed very genuine and thoughtful, traits that Cass admired in others, and it was satisfying to see their mutual appreciation for each other's work.
The two Gryffindors continued working in silence. The best part about origami, in Cass' humble opinion, is seeing the paper finally take form. As she folded in two corners, she recognized the raven's feet. The next folds were for the wings, then the tail. She worked slowly, but diligently, trying to understand the concepts of the old art form. To turn something as flat as paper into a beautifully complex, three-dimensional object was magic in and of itself. Muggles truly were astounding and never ceased to amaze her.
"Look, look!" her work partner exclaimed. Cass smiled at her enthusiasm, happy to see that all hints of doubt were gone.
"It looks amazing," she complimented, pausing in her movements to appreciate the girl's final product. It was almost identical to the example shown on the sheet itself, which looked very complicated for a beginner. "I'm about done with mine too. Just have to add the finishing touch..." On the table were some drawing supplies for any student who wished to adorn their paper mate with extra characteristics. Cass picked a silver marker and carefully drew on the raven's tiny face, holding it gently as to not ruin the folds. She pulled back to reveal a pair of beady eyes matched with furrowed eyebrows. "I like ravens," she explained with a giggle, "especially the ones with a little bit of attitude."
The girl made a suggestion to ask the house-elf to enchant their new creations and Cass wholeheartedly agreed. "Of course!" she said, standing up. "What kind of witches would we be if we weren't making everything fly all the time?"
Cass walked over with her raven and politely waited to the side for the house-elf to finish enchanting a boy's snake origami before stepping up. She didn't recognize this one, though she usually made an effort to remember the names of any she came across. "Excuse me," she asked, holding her raven up and pointing at the girl's dragon. "Would you mind enchanting these for us?"

Katrina almost glowed as the girl complimented her little origami friend. The 12-year-old watched with a touch of awe as the dark haired girl seemed to expertly fold everything. It was quite obvious that she had done it before, unlike Katrina. The red-head found herself smiling as her new friend put some 'finishing touches' on her raven, speaking about their attitude. Katrina found herself almost laughing at the adorable raven she perfected. Katrina found a black marker and drew two cute eyes and a smiling mouth.
For whatever reason, Katrina always imagined dragons being cute instead of fearless. Perhaps it was all her imagination, but she would love dragons either way.
Beside Katrina, the girl stood up excitedly at the suggestion of having a house elf enchant their critters. She boldly approached one and asked for him to enchant our origami masterpieces for us. Katrina held her red dragon proudly up for him to see.
"Sure," The house elf simply snapped his fingers and the dragon in Katrina's outstretched hand burst into life. He smirked and walked away to another students' request.
"Wow," Katrina breathed in wonder as her eyes widened.
Her little paper friend seemed to ripple with magic. He crawled up her fingers with his stubby paper legs and perched himself on the tip of her pointer finger. He let out a noiseless roar, mouth opening wide in an adorable pose. His thin wings stretched out on either side as he let out a tiny flame. Katrina slowly walked back over to the table and placed her hand down so he could scamper off.
"He's so cute!" Katrina squealed as he ran round in circles chasing his own tail. "Like a tiny puppy!"
Katrina grabbed a plain blue paper from the stack and held it out to him. "Fire?" She asked, not sure if the dragon could even hear, let alone understand. To her yelp of surprise, the dragon lit the tip of the paper with his matchstick breath. Katrina's eyes widened further with admiration for her new friend. Who knew how long he would last?
"This is so worth it," Katrina smiled to her new friend. "Oh, by the way, my name's Katrina,"

The dragon's cute face next to the raven's mean one was an amusing contrast to Cass, and she was glad to see the girl giving her creation a little extra love. At the house elf's snap, both creatures instantly came alive. Cass watched as her raven hopped around on her outstretched palms. It pecked at her, and Cass was thankful the paper wasn't nearly as sharp as an actual beak, otherwise she'd be making a lot of embarrassing noises at the moment.
At her side, the girl's dragon gave a silent roar and Cass was surprised to see a tiny flame erupt from its mouth. It truly was an incredible bit of magic. Her raven, who she had dubbed Cranky in her head, didn't seem to find the dragon as impressive however. It suddenly flew out of Cass' hands and right for the dragon, its wings beating furiously and its tiny claws outstretched in a menacing manner. Cass gasped and quickly grabbed Cranky before it could swoop down and get itself burned or worse, tear the dragon to shreds. Who knew origami birds could be such wankers?
When she felt Cranky was starting to behave a bit better, she left it to perch on her shoulder as she introduced herself to the girl, whose name turned out to be Katrina. "I'm Cass," she smiled back. "Thanks for letting me sit with you. It was really fun."
She felt Cranky shift on her shoulder as it leaned forward, its beady eyes peering at Katrina and her dragon in suspicion. "I wonder how long these enchantments last," Cass mused. "I really did give my raven too much attitude. Cranky doesn't seem to like anybody." On cue, Cranky began pecking at whatever strands of Cass' hair that it could reach, occasionally giving experimental tugs. Cass frowned as she tried to pull her head away. "Especially me, apparently."

Scaly Papery Friends
Katrina was started as her new friend's raven dove at her dragon. Luckily the girl caught her unruly companion before any danger occurred. Her dragon raced across the table toward the opposite edge. Just as he disappeared from the side, Katrina stood up afraid her had fallen, instead of crashing to the floor as she had expected, her dragon open his wings and soared up above them.
The girl introduced herself as Cass, Katrina was glad to finally have a name for you, "I'm glad we sat together too! I would have never made my dragon if you hadn't said anything." Her dragon swooped down and let out another silent roar before soaring back up between the floating candles.
"Come back," Katrina giggled, now fascinated by his newfound talent of flight. He dove almost directly down and spread his wings at the last second to slow his landing into Katrina's red hair.
"Aw, poor Cranky!" Katrina exclaimed sympathetically, "I'm sure he just woke up on the wrong side of the bed-- er, paper." A grin spread on Katrina's face. It sure had been a long time since she had joked around, the pure emotions meant more to her than anything had in a long time.
Katrina reached up to grab her dragon before he could nest further in her hair. He happily climbed into her outstretched palm and began licking a finger with his papery tongue. She suppressed a giggle as it felt more like a feather than anything else. "I think I'll name you Roar" He puffed his wings in a way that seemed to agree with her choice.
He scrambled to her shoulder, surprising Katrina and causing her to squirm as his sharp paper claws dug into her school robes. Roar perched on her shoulder and opened his mouth in another silent roar, ending it with a small burst of fire.
Katrina bit her lip, suddenly aware of the passage of time. It must be close to dinner by now. She still had a bit of work to do for History of Magic and a half-finished book laying on her nightstand to called her. "I think I should head out. I hope we can meet again soon! See ya later!" With a wave and a final silent roar from Roar, and Katrina left the room, leaving with a new friend.

The dragon flew over their heads as Katrina spoke. It pleased Cass to hear that her words had somehow helped the other girl in accomplishing her task. She didn't like talking too much and often worried her voiced thoughts would seem intrusive or just be generally unwelcomed. In this case, however, she considered herself fortunate enough to give someone just the right push.
"Anytime," Cass said sincerely. Although they didn't talk that much, she genuinely had a pleasant time folding origami and getting to know Katrina. The sight of their paper creatures soaring overhead was definitely a major bonus.
Cass grinned back at Katrina's joke, nodding at the sheets of paper on the table. "Maybe he just forgot to change his sheets last night." She watched as the dragon, now known as Roar, landed perfectly on Katrina and let out another tiny burst of flame. Cass didn't think she'd ever seen a cuter deadly animal. Cranky squawked indignantly.
It took Cass a moment to register how much time had passed, not realizing it was already almost dinner time. Had they really spent the whole afternoon together? She'd been so at piece constructing her little paper friend while chatting with her new human friend that it didn't even cross her mind. "Me too. See you around!" She waved goodbye as Katrina left, smirking as Cranky let out one final caw in her direction. "I liked her too," she said, packing her things up and making her way to the exit as well. She had a new sketch to add to her collection.
