Even though the Christmas Holidays felt like they didn’t last long enough for Euphaustus to manage to tick off more than a couple of goals off his list, the difference of all the students chatting across the Great Hall was easily effective. The chatter and discourse of how every student spent their days at home made the young Hufflepuff pout in gloominess - but wiped the blue emotions away with a forced smile and a huge chunk of a strawberry jam muffin in his mouth. He soon regretted his own greediness over the edible when it took him at least five minutes to munch it down to pieces. He then proceeded to drench his throat with a golden goblet of warm milk.

He didn’t entirely regret his decision to stay at the castle, because the tales he was so eager to tell his friends were worth everyone’s time - or at the very least, so he thought. Speaking of friends, none of his relatively close acquaintances was sitting around yet. He assumed that maybe most of them were still trying to unpack everything they took back with them. Next to him sat a fat, chubby lad with golden hair and blue crystal eyes. Someone Euphaustus (and probably everyone at Hogwarts) knew. The lad was mercilessly shoving food into his mouth without taking into consideration that other fellow housemates were still on their way. After releasing an obvious gag of disgust, the pale, black-haired student pushed the idiotic golden-head to the side. Ineffectively, not even making him move an inch. However, it got his attention still.

“You look like you ate your relatives during the holidays, care to stop being so selfish?”
Euphaustus got completely ignored and given the cold shoulder. It didn’t take long for the ghostly lad to turn red, his slightly pointy ears torching as his cheeks blazed - he could feel the heat.
“I’m good friends with the Fat Friar you know, all I have to do is tell him to disturb your peace every night and he’d be more than eager to do so!” Euphaustus then grabbed a slice of buttered bread and ate it aggressively. The poor guy next to him quickly ran off away from the table, and even left the hall. With a cocky smile across his face, and the fat Hufflepuff’s plate now in front of him, eating his leftovers, the boy shoved more food in his mouth, and once he got tired of chewing, he stood up from his seat, only to get a better look at the fresh crowd that was coming into the hall.

In the centre spot, right at the front of the group, stood a tall Gryffindor, with gorgeous orange hair, styled wavy to the side, he shook everyone’s hand as fellow students seemed to adore him.

Euphaustus nearly choked in repugnance, and slight jealousy.

But most importantly, he continued scanning the entryway from one side to another, hoping to spot a familiar face.

Aaron's Christmas holidays had been a blast! He'd been so homesick during his first few months at Hogwarts, but after getting to spend two weeks with his family, he felt fully refreshed! So, as he walked into the Great Hall the Monday after returning to school, the eleven-year-old had a definite pep in his step.

He made his way to the Hufflepuff table, and after not seeing either of his two best mates, he took a random spot. Aaron immediately began piling his plate high with food. He had missed the huge variety of options here compared to back home. He loved that his mother took the time to cook rice and fish and soup in the mornings - hearty Korean breakfasts - all Christmas break, but sometimes he just wanted some waffles drizzled in syrup with some milk. (Of course, now that he was back here at Hogwarts, it wouldn't be long until he started missing his mother's cooking again).

Just as he was about to start chowing down on said waffles, a boy got up abruptly and ran off from the table. Aaron vaguely recognized him as a larger boy who was known to enjoy food, and he briefly wondered why he had run off like that. His eyes drifted down the table to where he had been seated, and he noticed a familiar face. Euphaustus Boppity. The only reason Aaron remembered the boy's name was because it was so peculiar and the boy himself was a bit odd, too. Nevertheless, Euphaustus was the first familiar face he had seen this morning and he took it upon himself to go over and say hi.

Aaron grabbed his plate and utensils, then traveled a little ways down the table to sit across from the pale-faced first year. "Hey, bud, nice seeing you!" he said with a genuine smile. A glance at the boy's plate revealed he had probably just finished eating, meaning Aaron's timing was off. He wondered briefly if Euphaustus had somewhere to be, but continued his pleasantries anyway. "How was your holidays? Did you end up staying at the castle for break?" he wondered, cutting into his waffles and beginning to chow down.

He recalled that, back when they met in December, Euphaustus had been debating between staying here or going home for the holidays. He'd even said that if he stayed at Hogwarts, he would go exploring the castle. If he had followed through on that idea, Aaron was eager to know all the details.

A moment after asking about his holidays, though, Aaron recalled the large boy running from the table. He looked up from his food to Euphaustus, wondering if he knew why. But.. he wasn't interested enough in the large boy to ask. He just wanted to know about Euphaustus' break.

And so a familiar face was spotted, or rather, it approached Euphaustus. Nonetheless, he was excited and happy. He felt the tingles in his stomach. It wasn’t an everyday occurrence for the boy to be approached. Especially after all the time he had spent in solitude during the Christmas holidays. Keeping in touch with the ghosts wasn’t boring or unappreciated - don’t get him wrong - but there was something special about having friends who were just like him. He loved just knowing there were people he could talk to. It lifted off a burden Euphaustus didn’t know he had, weighing him down.

Aaron’s way of greeting him reminded Euph of his hometown and his muggle friends. Wizards coming from pure-blooded families - or the majority of them - had such a way with being so formal and dramatic, from handshakes to bowing. It was worth gagging at. It was fresh and totally tolerable to see someone being simple and not extra. Hence the nostalgia.
“Aaron!” Euphaustus lit up in excitement and total cheerfulness. He was quite surprised to have remembered his name - but it made sense; Euphaustus didn’t have too many friends to remember.

“I did! It was majestic, to begin with! You won’t believe what happened in Myrtle’s bathroom! I also overheard some juicy gossip from the ghosts themselves!” The dark-haired boy was ready to go off and tell everyone in close distance about it, even if they weren’t part of the conversation or didn’t want to be bothered.
“I think the Fat Friar has a little secret too! He might be hiding some sort of passageway to the Kitchens! I also think I heard him crying, but didn’t get to ask him. We should check up on him someti-.”

Euphaustus took a halt and stopped. This is probably why he didn’t have too many friends. He talked too much and never realized it, until he did.
“I’m sorry, I realized I didn’t return the question,” he frowned, stood up and bent forward to grab a couple of slices of buttered toast. He didn’t want Aaron to eat his breakfast alone; as in with him being the only one eating. Besides, he was still famished.
“What about you? Did you go home or possibly on a holiday someplace else?” He soon started to fantasize about what it would have been like for him say he did go back home. Nothing would have changed from last year’s or before. But it still felt like tradition, and he was partially ashamed he broke that same tradition.

Hopefully, his mum still got him something.

It was nice to know that Euphaustus remembered him. While Aaron had always been very good with names and faces, he had come to know that others were not. The boy in front of him not needing a reminder was a nice change, and his enthusiastic reaction made Aaron feel like he'd left a good impression. Building snowmen together was certainly a bonding experience.

While he began to eat his breakfast, Aaron listened to the boy eagerly. "Majestic" was the word Euphaustus used to describe his break. What a descriptive word, but not one that's usually used by a first year. It was refreshing.

Myrtle's bathroom? The Fat Friar? Aaron was completely content to listen to Euphaustus' stories, but it seemed that the boy felt like he had fumbled. He apologized and asked about Aaron's break, prompting him to quickly swallow the food that had been in his mouth. "No need to say sorry," he said through a few more chews of food. He took a drink of orange juice to clear the rest of his airway. It was then that he noticed Euphaustus grabbing some toast, which made Aaron feel not so bad himself that he might've been keeping him there for no reason.

"Erm- I just went home to Cardiff. Wales, you know?" he said, offering a renewed smile now that there was no more food in his mouth. "It was amazing seeing my family. I'd missed them a lot 'cause I'd never been far from home before like this, so- I'm just really glad I went home and saw them," Aaron explained, beaming at the memories.

The family hadn't gone anywhere special per se, but just being all together had been heaven to him. Aaron would never admit it to anyone, but he had actually teared up when his little sister cried at seeing him again. Almost four months away from home, and it felt like she'd grown so much in that time. Learning new words and her hair growing longer. Not to mention seeing Avery again. That had been- weird. His twin brother and him had never been apart from each other for more than a day, so four months? They had done a lot of catching up.

"It wasn't anything super special," he summed up, looking down at his food and taking a smaller bite of waffle now. Aaron raised his eyes after he swallowed, and offered another grin, "So, tell me what the castle was like during the holidays. I hear there's a huge feast.. and I'm down to hear all about the rumors you were talking about," he said, inviting Euphaustus to talk again. Aaron was perfectly content to just listen for now, considering he was still working on his breakfast.
