The first week of classes had all but come and gone without much in the way of excitement or worthy of comment. Nicholas was in his second year now and the magic of finally attending the school, excuse the pun, had worn off. He didn't loathe Hogwarts, nor his time spent in its halls, but he hardly found himself as filled to the brim with excitement at the mere possibility of casting a charm as he had been when he'd entered the school the same time the year prior. Of course, the thin veneer of joy had also been shattered more than once through the rumour mill. Nicholas was obtuse, but he wasn't daft, even he had to take into account what had taken place. Sure, stories of shades and spiders may have been embellished by students looking to garner some sort of cred with their cohort, but there was real danger. The express had been derailed, and Hogsmeade had been bombed, students had died. It was hard to keep up an air of wonderment when the blood of children was on the air. Yet, the professors seemed to have done so, oh how quickly things had resettled to a degree of normalcy. Hogwarts, still, was much unchanged, only a slight bit of polish had worn off of its display.

But, the lack of whimsy had come with its own added benefit, namely he felt significantly more comfortable in the school than he had been even toward the end of summer. There were underclassmen now, he was no longer the bottom of the unspoken hierarchy. More than that, he had started to assert himself more, no longer content to sit in silence and watch the world go by. He would become an active member of the student body, he would make sure that those who tried to bring him down would be thrust into the mud. Ironically, he had done that literally to the Ranvier girl during camp. She'd started the argument, but he was the one who had made sure to escalate it. The taste of slugs was a minor setback for that satisfaction. Still, if he never saw her again, outside of their shared classes, then this year would certainly be far more enjoyable than it had been previously.

Besides, there had been positive interactions a plenty during the camp, new faces with whom he had struck up a casual rapport. Both from Hogwarts and abroad, shared discussions as to brooms and spells had made the month of August as enjoyable as it could be, given the circumstances.

It was with a slight pang of longing for those long days without class that Nicholas trudged through the courtyard, wandering through the school after the end of his final lesson that Friday. The weekend had come at last, but two days was hardly long enough for a proper rest. He wanted little more than to crash into bed and sleep for god only knew how long, but that was hardly possible. There was too much to do, even this early in the year.

Luckily, the day was nice, the summer weather had not yet faded and the crisp afternoon sun beat pleasantly upon his neck as he made his way through the courtyard. There was very little that could ruin his mood.

The boy was back in town. Jack honestly loved it at Hogy Warty, but much like an average person, there could be bad days. Today wasn't just bad; it had been horrific. It would be a particular Hufflepuff third year if waking up on the wrong side of the bed was a person. His already typically messy hair had been sticking up in all directions since he had woken up and showered that morning—nothing better to wreck a mood than a bad hair day and some poor sleep. Like a zombie, the boy stalked the halls after his first set of classes. He could feel it in his bones that it would not be a good day for somebody if they were to get on his nerves. Slouched shoulders, and toes scraping against the ground, Jack could feel the bags under his eyes dragging him down, headfirst, into the underworld.

There was a part of the boy that was longing for some sort of chaos or action. However, nothing too crazy had happened in the school year yet. Just typical idiocy, but there wasn't much else to write home to ma' about. It was boring, and a bored Jack means that something nasty was bound to happen. It was definitely not going to be fun for the lucky somebody that drew Jack's short stick.

As the boy trudged on through the halls, Jack couldn't help catch an eye on a local Gryffindor kid. He had seen him throughout the previous year, but he had a good enough opinion of the kid. "Oi, Ey! Nick, right?" His words were loud and rough, but maybe he could find something to kill his boredom streak. As he stroke quickly into the courtyard, Jack reached out and grabbed the kid by the shoulder. "You look bored? I bet you're bored. Let do somethin'? Yeah? I'm rearin' to get somethin' interestin' goin'. Whatchya think, mate?" He was like a junkie trying to get a fix. Boredom was the worst thing the boy could ever think of, and he would do anything to alleviate himself of the pain.

Hogwarts. What a dark place for such a magical school. They should really hire a good security team for the sake of everyone’s safety. But one person can't possibly change everything to be better. Just like what her father would say, she needs to be the light in the dark. Aurora was thinking to use a glow in the dark attire or using lightbulbs filled with the bluebell flames as her accessories. The Ravenclaw tower would cease from existence if she did. A rather not very creative idea struck her mind, quite a fun thing to do, honestly. The hair colour changing spell. She was familiar with the spell, might as well call herself a pro. The dull castle wall desperately need some touch of colours. Tampering with the school properties might be considered as vandalism, but if she does it on her own hair, that would be perfectly fine. Besides, Aurora was bored with her pink hair.

A wand on her right hand and a compact mirror on the other, her Cat with a Hufflepuff theme clothing was trailing beside her. The idea was to make a nice colour shift from pastel blue to lavender, but she couldn’t seem to get it right after multiple attempts. Spell after spell was cast upon every strand of her hair. “Lucifur, what do you think of this hair?” A striking neon blue painted her bangs while the rest was still more in the mauve colour. The furball looked at his owner with an unapproved look. Yes, Lucifur was an adorable judgy cat. “What about-“ She pointed out her cherry wand at her hair once again, muttering the incantation. This time, the blue was quite settle, but the gradation with the purple was uneven. “-this?” He just let out the cutest meow, did not even spare Aurora a glance and continue to walk to wherever his little paws lead him to.

Perhaps rainbow would be a good idea. First, it was new, no one in Hogwarts ever pull of such a look, and second of all, it looks fun and bright. The Ravenclaw stopped in the middle of the hall, trying so hard to make her imagination come to reality. Anyone around would notice that she was standing there casting crinus muto for roughly ten minutes after she finally decided it was a good look. Lucifur, on the other hand, was patient enough to wait for his slow owner, and ran away towards the courtyard the second Aurora was done with her hair situation. “Or, this? Wait, LUCY! COME BACK!” Despite being a small kitten, he was fast. Maybe he was a cheetah in his previous life, who knows? The compact mirror on her hand was closed shut as she tried to keep up with the cat. “LUCIFUR! COME BA-“ Some would say it as a coincidence, how often it was for two people to cross path with each other. Without all that mud and slugs, he looked even better than usual. Even with his questionable sense of style, somehow it suited him well. The other person seemed to blend well with the background as if he was not there in the first place. Do not look at his eyes, do not look at his eyes! Then she did. “Oh, hi-nevermind- uh” Aurora secretly cursed at her cat for leading her to the courtyard and meet Nicholas again while Lucifur remained unbothered as he reached out his paw on the boy’s leg.

Nick was slightly taken aback when he was approached, and it took him a few moments too many to process exactly was going on. He wasn’t exactly expecting to be called out, especially by a student that he wasn’t entirely familiar with. A Hufflepuff who he had seen in passing a few times in the previous year. It took him a moment or two to place the older boy’s name before it finally clicked, Warren. It was his surname, that much he was sure of, but for the life of him he could not find what the boy’s first name was. One of these days he would really need to sort out his inability to remember names, and faces, and his general lack of skills in any area that related to basic interaction.

Still, he shot him a lazy grin, the kind of expression that sat on the threshold of happiness and exhaustion, “Hey, yeah, Nick McCowan.” Loosely assorted single-syllable words were exactly the kind of response that such a smile seemed to predicate, “Warren, right?” He answered the other boy’s question with another question.

He hadn’t much expected the response to the question to be a hand on his shoulder and a question as to whether he was dying to get something interesting going. In fact, it was almost certain that it wasn’t a response at all. Still, once more Nicholas was rather taken aback, but he managed to hide the surprise on his face. What was with this year and people being so touchy? Did he give off that vibe now? Was that a good thing? Queries as to whether or not he seemed like a hugger briefly drowned out the question that Warren posed, but he recovered quickly.

“Yeah, a bit bored,” He said slowly, the boy’s chaotic energy making him feel almost as if something was being put on, it felt almost as if the Hufflepuff knew something that he didn’t.

Truthfully, he hadn’t really planned on doing much of anything exciting. A nap in the sun was still somewhat calling to him, but he didn’t exactly know how to break that to Warren, nor did he know if it was a particularly wise thing to say. After all, it was hardly a good impression to immediately shrug someone off.

The approach of a cat seemed to answer the question for him, or at least delayed it a moment, for the rapid approach of any animal was prone to draw the attention of a child. Especially when that cat placed its paw directly out and touched his robed leg. Nicholas was no exception. His grin grew wider at the appearance of the animal, although, something inside of him seemed to grow dark. His stomach felt like a pit, a sense of foreboding throwing his internal balance of check. Had he heard something earlier?

His eyes tracked from the cat and to the direction from which it had come, and he found the source of that dread. Ranvier was there, her hair now rainbow, and wet and muddied athletic gear traded for her Ravenclaw robe. Son of a…

He didn’t bother answering her greeting with one of his own, instead turning his attention back to Warren, “Yeah, getting into something interesting sounds fantastic, mate. Although we may want to move somewhere else,” He craned his neck in the direction of Ranvier, “That girl over there is proper crazy, you know the type to turn something fun into something very much not fun?” He said the latter words in a lowered voice, “A real piece of work.”

"Jack. Jack Warren, to be exact." The Hufflepuff would grin from ear to ear in a way that might make somebody a tad uneasy. He was most definitely up to no good. The surprise that Nick had felt was seemingly lost on the boy. It would be a stretch if you were to call the boy perceptive because, let's face it... Jack wasn't.

The minute the response of 'yeah, a bit bored" was uttered, Jack exclaimed loudly, "Fantastic! Now let's see what's goin' on around here..." The boy's gaze shifted around the stone-tiled courtyard as he looked for what could be a possible target of jokes or pranks. Who knew? Maybe he could convince this second year to prank a professor. Of course, that wouldn't go over well, but it would be exciting. Not that Jack wanted him to get in trouble, the boy just wanted to his crazy boredom streak. It was gnawing up inside of his stomach, and the only thing to sate this hunger for excitement was, in Jack's mind, to cause a little bit of mayhem!

At the thought of chaos, something very chaotic indeed appeared. But, if cats aren't the epitome of chaos, what would take that cake? BUT WAIT, THERE'S MORE!? What about a cat named LUCIFUR! Craziness! This decision was already shaping up to be a good one. Jack watched as the kitty padded up only to paw at Nick's leg. "Y'know, I think I made a good choice in talkin' to you today, mate." The boy took his hand off of the Gryffindor's shoulder only to wrap his arm around the boy's shoulders. Sadly, Mr. McCowan was not going to escape from Jack that easily. As he continued to grin, the owner of the chaos cat soon arrived after—A multicolored girl with multicolored hair. Ooh, fancy.

The only thing that Jack heard were the words 'proper crazy'. Proper crazy would seem like a great time, even if it were the proper crazy that goes buzzkill. The look on Nick's face told Jack all he needed to know. Why was it that Jack missed the most obvious expressions only to make up the meaning behind another? This kid obviously had a crush. That is why he wanted to run away, right? So with his assumption already made and loaded, the kid spoke up, "Oi! Fruitloops, come over here!" He waved his free hand wildly to get her attention. "My pal here, McCowan, said you were a piece of work. I think he might be right! I mean you're hair is lookin' like a unicorn decided to throw up all over it-" If Jack actually knew that Aurora was a friend of Winnie's, he would have never bothered to throw verbal jabs in the girl's direction. But an If is only an if.

Abandoning Lucifur or picking him up. He would remember his way back to the tower, right? If the girl decides to go for the first option, the almighty silver siberian would hate her for the rest of her life and there was no way Aurora could live in that situation. The other alternative, on the other hand, would be less damaging for her entire well being. But one of the issues that held her back was the unknown reason why she did such a thing back in their last rendezvous just in case the not so impressed boy started to bombard her with questions. Beyond doubt, curiosity peaked through as Nicholas whispered to another boy. Oh yes, there was another student standing nearby. How long had he been standing there? It was almost like he appeared out of nowhere in her field of view. To her surprise, they were talking about her. Whether it was a good thing or not, it could still be considered as a win. One hundred points to Aurora.

“P-Piece of work?” Heck yeah I am! A masterpiece to be exact. Though Nicholas did not mean it like that, it was enough to make the human version of the rainbow emoji grow more shade of red particularly on her cheek. No one could describe how discombobulated her feelings were. Her hands agitatedly tried to cover her flushed face with her bright iridescence hair while her body slightly swaying from side to side, looking so dumb and utterly flustered. Barely audible, she mumbled a gratification from the deepest part of her heart. “T-thank you?” Both the cat and the owner were asking for attention from the same disheveled looking Gryffindor boy. Not sure what they saw in him, but apparently, he was charming enough to take full control of their hearts. Aurora sheepishly glanced between the ground and her slug partner while Lucifur kept poking his leg with his tiny paw. Who would win? Only time would tell, or Nicholas.

Fruitloops. How dare that boy from the house of the badgers called her the only rainbow food that the unicorn herself hates so much. The different colours they had did not even have different flavours. What an outright disappointment in a box. But his next comment about how she presented herself in public was quite a delight. “Ah yes, that’s my purpose, I guess?” Whoever said that girls are complicated must have never met the grumpy creature named Nicholas McCowan. Actually, his body language was very clear that he did not like Aurora’s presence even in the slightest. Despite that clear fact, the insult came as a compliment on her squishy marshmallow inside her head. “I’m not going to be here long, though. Just need to take my cat and skedaddle out of here.” She pulled out a lavender scrunchie from her wrist and used it to tie her hair in a bun then crouched down to get the cat. “Luci, I will make you new toys! Let’s go!” Unfortunately, it didn’t work. He was too busy jumping on Nicholas’ body, begging to be carried.

lHe’d be lying if he said he’d expected the arm to be thrown over his shoulder, and that surprise carried into his stance. He felt almost taken off his feet, an awkward movement that required him to recover. Slight frustration rose in his stomach, but not aimed so much at Jack as it was toward himself for failing to prepare himself. He felt somewhat awkward in the stance, off-balanced and off-kilter. He felt even more awkward when Jack opted to entirely ignore his earlier warning and called over Ranvier. Nicholas shot a glance at the older boy, hoping that the facial expression could convey how much he did not wish to be in the current situation.

But in the situation, he was, and he was becoming more and more of a passenger on the train that was destined to wreck. It seemed that Jack Warren had decided that the best course of action was to immediately probe the rainbow-haired girl with a relatively light insult, one that targeted that very aspect of her appearance. It was a new dye-job, Nicholas knew, she’d had pink hair when she’d decided to annoy him to hell and back during their brief altercation at camp.

And as she was so prone to doing, she thanked the Hufflepuff for his insults. Whether she had entirely misread the fact that unicorn vomit was not something to idolise or was deliberately misunderstanding the obvious insult, Nicholas did not know, and that lack of knowledge only served to frustrate him further. More than that, she had turned red when she had heard Nicholas had referred to her as a piece of work. Was she angry or flustered? Why would she be flustered but that? More importantly, why had Jack thought it appropriate to betray the unspoken code of brotherhood that united all men. You don’t tell a girl what another guy said about them. At least, that was what Nicholas assumed the code said, it’s what it should have said. Otherwise, you ended up in situations like this. Situations where you find yourself trapped between two people who clearly couldn’t read the room.

For Nicholas easily understood what was going on, Warren was insulting Ranvier probably to bond with Nicholas over a shared dislike for the girl, and she was doing that thing where she played dumb in order to mess with people. What a mess of conflict.

But there were other things to consider, namely, the cat pawing at his leg. The cat that allegedly belonged to the rainbow Ravenclaw. She may have been annoying, but the feline was cute. So, Nicholas bent down to pick up the little feller, letting Jack’s arm fall as he did so.

He spoke as he bent, “He’s insulting you, idiot.” The words came out as a semi-lazy drawl, the inflection rather lacking.

Nicholas smiled at the cat as he gave it a loving scratch behind the ears, “You know ‘unicorn vomit’ isn’t exactly the kind of look that people seek to emulate?”

With that said, he picked the little grey cat up, making sure to give it the appropriate amount of attention such a cute little critter deserved.

“Unless you’re messing with me again, you know you can stop pretending to be dumb, I’m not buying it,” He added.

With that out in the open, he spoke to Jack, making sure his voice was loud enough that the girl could hear as well, “Like I said, mate, piece of work. She does this thing where she pretends to not understand what’s going on. All like a crazy play to mess with your head, she even kissed me to sell it.”

He gave Lucifur another ear scritch, “The cat is cute though.”

T he look of utter confusion splashed across Jack's face, and it stuck like an egg on his face. One eyebrow raised curiously, while the left side of his mouth raised as if he was trying to show off only one of his canine teeth. This is what some call the look of utter dumbfoundedness. Had this child never been insulted before? Where was the crying? Where were the mean retorts? Instead, all he got was a meager little 'thank you.' How disgusting.

As the other boy bent over to lift the cat from its yowls of anguish from being on the ground, Jack's playfully held arm that happened to be wrapped around McCowan's shoulders fell limply back to his side. Ordinarily, such courses of action would have drawn Jack's attention away from the target of his insults and towards whatever was making that ridiculous trills of mirthless begging that the thing at Nick's feet was making.

However, Jack quickly realized that Nick had a similar plan. That of which was to make this girl see reality. That reality was that her hair color choices were terrible and ugly. "I dunno, maybe she's not playin' dumb, Nicky. Maybe the lass has a few screws loose up in her thick ol' skull..." The boy proposed, tilting his head to the side as if it would help change his perspective on the girl. But, no... that didn't really do much, besides make it look like she was walking on a wall... "Do you think she's using her hair color as a warning sign? Maybe it screams out sometin' like 'Oi! I'm bloody dense!' That would make sense, yeah?" Nick's statement on how cute the cat was fell on deaf ears, sadly. Jack really wasn't one for cats.

A hundred percent natural stupidity, the finest if some might say. Aurora was never a street-smart type of person to the extent people thought it couldn’t be real. Insults became compliments and the other way around, misreading the situation was never a new thing. The thing about the girl is that her action would be based on the level of her mood in the range of one to ten, bad to awesome, and it fluctuates from the highest to the lowest and back again in a short period of time. Thus, no one would expect what she would do next. The luckiest person award currently goes to Nicholas McCowan, because if he were anybody else, a frown wouldn’t be the only thing she gave. Being called an idiot by someone who you admire was not a good feeling, especially when it wasn’t intended in a playful way. Though, his face was glued down in the good list and wouldn’t budge for whatever reason. She was hurt, and instead of walking down the violent end, it would be a reason for her to cry tonight, and the next night, and ten years from now.

But the other boy on the other hand, was not Nicholas. He looked like a generic Chris that you would find in every neighbourhood. Or Josh, or John, whichever the most common. He, unlike the charming boy with Lucifur on his arm, would get a little something. No one that had insulted her beautiful hair got away from the consequences, and he wouldn’t be the first one who would get away either. “Listen here, scar face! If you don’t like my hair then don’t look at it, I’ll happily volunteer to gauge your eyes out if that’s what you want” She lied, obviously. “Besides, I don’t care about what you think, not you anyway.” Her eyes shifted from the supporting character to the main one. Just wishing for once he would say something nice to her. One good gesture would be appreciated, anything but grumpy tone and disgusted body language.

“Come on Lucy, don’t associate yourself with these two airheads.” No, getting Lucifur and running away like a scaredy cat wasn’t part of the plan. She got work to do.

One for the money, two for the show, he should be ready, or his vision will go. As she got closer, and closer, and closer… a spray directed on the face should be enough to remind him not to mess with the rainbow ravenclaw. Not now, not ever. That, if she was accurate enough to land the attack.

Nicholas snickered at Jack’s comment, the cruel giggle juxtaposed against the care that he was providing to the cat. It was a cute cat, and he supposed its owner could be classified as cute too, provided that one looked past her personality and brightly coloured hair. Warning sign was an apt descriptor, she certainly required a warning sign. It seemed, however, that the older boy was far more skilled at triggering the danger that such a sign warned against than his younger companion. Nicholas’s insults were so often answered by blushes and mumbles, whereas Jack had managed to earn an insult directed at his appearance.

Nicholas idly continued to pat Lucy, he took it that was the cat’s name, as Aurora answered Jack’s insult in kind. Taking her approach in kind, his smirk only widened, the elation at finally having someone see what he saw in the girl providing ample fuel to his fire. He wasn’t the only one who understood exactly how annoying the girl was, and thus far Jack had managed to insult the girl without going into some bullshit rant about pureblood supremacy. The latter fact was more of a relief for Nicholas than it probably had any right being.

Smugness filled Nicholas’s voice as the girl approached, “Calling us airheads is a smidge ironic, ‘aint it? Something about pots, kettles and the colour black.”

His voice was sickenly sing-song, arrogance and a sense of invincibility colouring his tone. Surely there was nothing she could do to both the boys. She wouldn’t risk a spell, and not only were both the lads larger than her, but Nicholas held her cat in hand. No, he was perfectly safe.

“Y’know, I do reckon you’re right. She has to have at least a few screws loose…”
