Fingers wrapped around a steaming mug, Ana stepped outside. Most mornings were spent flying, but since it was Saturday and she had ample time to do that later, she had opted for a walk first. The decision was also influenced by the fact that she had barely slept the previous night, so getting on a broom right away sounded like a bad idea, even for her. Hopefully, the combination of the cool Scottish morning and the hot coffee would wake her up a bit.

Between the consistent lack of sleep and the whirlpool of emotions that was constantly spinning through her mind, Ana looked far older than she had months before. It was hard to pinpoint exactly what caused this perception, as her features were the exact same they had always been. Perhaps it was the disappearance of childish colors from her attire or the haunted look that had replaced her smirks and smiles. She certainly felt older, like decades had passed since the past school year. Her general feelings of isolation weren't helpful either. Granted, that was almost entirely self-imposed, but that didn't mean she enjoyed it. The normal growing apart of adolescent friendships seemed exacerbated at Hogwarts, where people just disappeared without a trace. It seemed when she had arrived back at school towards the end of her second year, the majority of the people in her year had vanished. The ones that remained seemed dedicated to avoiding her, which, she did acknowledge likely had some relation to her own actions and choices.

God, even prior to this semester where she had set a record for the number of friends she had hurt in the shortest amount of time, she had a knack for driving people away. Hugh for example. She had quite enjoyed his company during their first year and in retrospect, had more than a little crush on him. Still, she had not only failed to write to him when she had been gone from school, she had managed to make things even more awkward, resulting in him most likely hating her forever and avoiding her since. As her thoughts continued at breakneck speed, her gait slowed slightly.

His green eyes peered at her under a furrowed brow. As soon as she set foot on the courtyard, he did not fail to notice her. Leaning against one of the pillars, Hugh had secluded himself for the day by devoting his time to watching other kids spend their Saturdays in the most odd ways. He had both arms crossed, making sure to show others there needn't be any intention of approaching him. But then there was Ana. A friend he, all things considered, still wished to call a friend. She had disappeared for a while, without a single note to him. Their last interaction had been... awkward. He had no desire to talk to her that day. There was so much anger within him. The revelation of his bloodline, betrayal of his real father and deceit of his uncle. It was the reason he had left Hogwarts for some time as well. Not leaving any note either.

This year, he had returned. Sadly it meant he was to retake his second year. A small inconvenience to him, considering he found school to merely be a distraction. As he stood out in a crowd already, he now knew it would only get worse over the following years. Just looking at Healy made him realise just how different they must look in the eyes of the regular witches and wizards. Still, it was not as if he were an alien. There were, of course, those like Erin that seemed hell-bent on hunting his kind. But he knew the troubles of some, and he found them the same as his. Children left to live in a place like this castle. Children whose parents either left them to their own devices or sought to imprison them here and allow them to be forgotten. Or perhaps the few of whose parents that tried to educate their offspring in an attempt at gaining a successful lineage. His was a weird mix of all of those.

His own pursuits aside, he was happy to have met his mother. Gida had shown him love where he expected little. Perhaps he had fallen to the same assumptions of his kind like others had. She proved him wrong in every way possible. She was gentle and calm, educated even. Though it was clear she was an exception among her kind. The Grug of her tribe had not been too keen on allowing Hugh to wander about their territory. Not out of fear of discovering secrets but simply because the giant was an aggressive being willing to kill anything he didn't like in particular.

Hugh started walking forward a little as he mused his recent history, hiding in the shadows of the colonnade. Eventually he would notice her slow down, there was no way of knowing what she was thinking of. But curiosity was pushing him to meet his old friend once again. Perhaps time had come to make amends, there was more than enough for him to fix. "Ana!" He'd call out as he jumped through one of the open arches onto the quad. "Hey..." He realised too late his arrival might startle her. "Got time to chat?"

Why wasn't there a guidebook to being a teenager? Not even necessarily a magic teenager or even someone dealing with all of the additional pressures that Ana was, just some sort of starting point. It seemed that navigating the normal drama and difficulties of adolescence was just as confusing as learning magic. There had to be some sort of clear answer somewhere that she just had yet to discover. While the past week spent researching ways to avoid dealing with boggarts had shown her there weren't answers for everything, this seemed to be something far too important and universal not to have one.

She was startled from her thoughts by an unexpected voice and her already rigid posture straighten further. Her head snapped up at the sound of her name, swiveling to discern the source. There was a fairly limited roster of people who were permitted to call her Ana without getting punched in the throat, and she wasn't actually in much of a punching mood that morning. In any event, she had coffee in one hand, which would likely spill if she struck someone while holding it. However, as her eyes landed upon the speaker, it turned out that she could leave the issue of punching someone while holding a beverage to be solved another day.

Almost as if she had conjured him with her thoughts, Hugh approached. "Oh, Hugh! Hello!" she said, smiling slightly and stopping altogether until he reached her. Despite how odd things had been when they had last spoken, he had been one of her first friends at Hogwarts. While she wasn't entirely at fault for the lack of letters she imagined it didn't make all that much of a difference in effect. If he somehow didn't hate her the way that she expected he did, the least she could do was have a conversation.

In any event, she wasn't one to drive away company those days. Her thoughts were far from pleasant, and the only thing that seemed to do much of anything to subdue them was chatting with someone on more agreeable subjects. "Of course," she replied, her eyes softening slightly. A small part of her wondered if he had really been avoiding her all this time since she hadn't so much as seen him in class or the Great Hall. Granted, she had been highly preoccupied with her own problems. Still, it seemed unlikely that he would have gone to the effort required to basically disappear for months only to seek her out later on.

That seemed like potentially a sore subject and so she opted not to bring it up for the moment. She of all people knew that avoiding others was no small task and there was always a deeper reason that might not have anything to do with the people in question. As he was the one who had approached her, she decided to wait to see what he intended to say. Absently tracing a pattern on her coffee cup, her eyes flitted downwards for a moment before meeting his again.

"Great!" The part-giant exclaimed a tad too excited to be given the chance. "I uh..." His voice fell the moment he was meant to talk. What was he trying to tell her? They both were aware they had fallen out of contact. Each having left on their own accord. Sighing in an attempt to calm himself, his eyes found hers as he smiled softly. "Let's just be straightforward." The sentence easily uttered as opposed to the rambling words inside his head. "We both know we've been away for a while." His hands clasped together, gripping themselves tightly. "I- I was angry last time, Ana..." His face turned to the floor. Curls dangling from his head and obscuring his eyes. "I've been very angry lately. Like I'm some sort of savage brute and... Well..." Looking back up, she would be able to find hesitation and doubt in his eyes as they locked with hers. "I found out I'm part-giant, Ana. Like, yes, my mum was... is, a giantess."

Silence overtook him. It was odd saying the words out loud. Of course, things might seem obvious, he was so tall compared to others of his age. They jokingly already called him a giant. But knowing it to be true felt like lead in your belly. "That was awkward to say. Not going to lie." His face seemed done with the subject already, fearing to see her reaction to the revelation. "I'm sorry for ambushing you with that. I just wanted to clear the air." He partly turned his body in shame, fearing he already wasted his chance to be normal. "No." He whispered to himself, pulling himself back. Forcing him to make a stand. "I met my mother. I went to find her in the last months of the last schoolyear. Stayed with her over summer."

Shrugging as he burst into a chuckle, he threw his arms around. "That's why I had to leave and why I wasn't ready to talk to you the last time we 'spoke'. I'm sorry." His brow furrowed, inspecting the girl's face intently. She seemed to have changed a bit from what he could tell. Perhaps he couldn't be sure of who stood before him after all. Yet he was confident enough to try and be her friend once more. "What about you? Are you alright?" His head turned to look around. There was no friend group waiting for her to meet, it seemed. "Are you on your way to meet someone?"

Hugh's excitement brought a slight smile to Ana's lips. Just speaking to him brought back memories of a far simpler time, when Ana's biggest concerns were her marks and whether or not she had a crush. Things were different now. There was much she had gained along the way and more she had lost. Hugh had been someone she had lost. While he hadn't made a massive effort to repair things, she blamed herself for it happening in the first place.

She nodded at the offering of being straightforward. Far too much of her life was convoluted and complex, straightforward was certainly something she would appreciate. She opted to listen first since he clearly had something he wanted to say. The first bit was no surprise. She knew they had grown apart. The second bit was somewhat surprising, but still something she could relate to. She was bursting with anger all the time it seemed, so she could hardly fault him for the same. She met his eyes as he glanced back up.

The next bit was definitely surprising. She didn't show it beyond a slightly arched eyebrow but she was more than a bit surprised. Still, she held her tongue. She knew from others that such a revelation could be a very sensitive subject, and she didn't want to react in a way that would hurt Hugh. Revelations about parents were something she was rapidly becoming an expert on, so she could hardly judge. "I can't imagine how you feel," she replied once it seemed he was finished for the moment. She made an effort not to sound judgemental one way or another since she didn't know exactly how he felt about it. Truth be told, she could imagine something of what it was like, but she'd hate people saying that they knew what she was going through when they couldn't begin to fathom it, so she was hardly going to turn around and do that to him.

"What's she like?" Ana asked, curious about what meeting an actual giant was like while also making an effort to get a more solid gauge of Hugh's feelings on the matter before she said anything too declarative.

"As far as reasons for not being ready to talk to someone go, I'd say that's a good one," she offered with a half-smile. It was better than her reasons for not writing him, anyway. Her eyebrows arched slightly when he asked if she was alright. Had he managed to avoid the rumors that swirled around? She wasn't going to bring them up if he hadn't.

"Alright is a relative term, I suppose," she said, her smile not quite reaching her eyes that time. "Nothing new exactly, mainly family... matters." She paused for a moment to search for the right word. While she didn't exactly like her family at the moment, refusing to show weakness or anything other than a united front had been drilled into her from birth and it wouldn't leave so easily.

She was most definitely not alright. Her mother was dead, her father might as well be, the remaining family she had loathed her, and she could hardly make it through a day without breaking down or lashing out at others. "And no, not at the moment."
