Throughout the year, Marilyn's father sent her owl packages containing little memorabilia of home. They normally weren't anything useful, just small trinkets to remind her of home. He was Muggleborn and had kept one foot in that life so while Marilyn and her siblings grew up, they learned about Muggle culture and even made Muggle friends alongside wizard friends. They liked to send her gifts too, but of course had no idea that when they gave them to her father it would be packaged up and sent via owl. They didn't even know the truth about where she was; they were simply told she was at a small academy in Liverpool, enrolled at the request of a stiff old aunt on her mother's side.

This time, her friend Judy had requested her father send Marilyn a little locket. Within the locket was a small Muggle photo of the two at Judy's eleventh birthday last May. It wasn't a very valuable locket, made of cheap plastic painted silver, but it was priceless to Marilyn because of the memories. She wasn't one to wear jewelry, but ever since she got the locket that morning at breakfast she had kept it on her and would admire it as she walked across the school.

Marilyn was walking through the courtyard, heading towards the library to do some quick studying before retiring to the Hufflepuff Common Room for the evening. She had her eyes glued to the locket, looking at the tiny picture within, not even paying attention to those around her. Suddenly she ran right into another student, the force startling her and causing her to drop the open locket. Before she could grab its chain, it fell onto the stone ground and its two halves broke apart upon impact.

Rosalyn was having an amazing day. The Great Hall served her favorite breakfast that morning and the class work was easier than expected. Rosalyn decided to cherish the wonderful day while it lasted, so she decided to take a walk down to the courtyard to watch the sunset. Rosalyn wholeheartedly believed that Hogwarts sunsets were the most beautiful thing ever. She tried to watch them as often as she could, even if it meant missing some study time.

While the short, blonde Gryffindor walked from her dorm to the courtyard she thought about the fact that she knew almost nothing about muggles. Rosalyn had always been interested in them, just never had the time to study them. She often thought about the little gadgets that they carried around and sometimes wondered what the small trinkets could do.

When Rosalyn was entering the courtyard, she ran straight into someone. The force of the crash knocked her straight onto the ground. She then heard a little clink and saw a muggle trinket broken on the ground next to her. Rosalyn immediately stood up and dusted herself off while helping the other girl gather her things.

“I am so sorry! I should have been watching where I was going.”

Rosalyn stuck out her hand for the girl to shake and said,

“ I’m Rosalyn”

It took a moment for Marilyn to process what happened. There was another student, a Gryffindor, that's who she had bumped into. The girl immediately jumped back up and helped Marilyn gather the pieces of the locket. "I'm so sorry," the girl was apologizing, after which she introduced herself as Rosalyn. Marilyn, slightly distracted for obvious reasons, nodded in response with a simple "Marilyn."

She checked the picture inside the locket. That was the most important part, and luckily the picture was still in fine shape. The locket merely broke in half at the clasp, but otherwise was fine. Relieved, she looked at Rosalyn and grinned. "It's alright! The important piece is still in tact. I should've been paying attention, too. My friend sent me this, you see, and it's all I can focus on." She looked over the locket once more as me mused aloud, "It's a simple fix, really. The mending spell fixes things like this, right?"

Marilyn pulled out her wand, holding the broken locket in her hand. She flicked her wand and spoke, "Reparo." The locket flinched in her hand, and quickly snapped back into one piece. She took a deep breath of relief, then looked back at Rosalyn. "See? No harm done. Besides, it's not like the whole thing is a huge deal. Just the picture on the inside. It's from a friend of mine." With a cheerful grin, she offered to show Rosalyn the Muggle photo.
