It was another day at the wonderful Hogwarts school of wizardry and magic, so peaceful and calm.. or so we thought. Winter had been walking to her spot under the tree, as she did each day on her break. When out of no where CRASH she fell to the ground. When she turned her head to peer up, she saw two familiar faces a girl and a boy, these two though their names unknown to her, would always bully her for absolutely no reason. She stood up and dusted herself off, giving them a deficient look. They were bullies for no reason, she felt like they had no hope of becoming better.

She began to walk away when the boy grabbed her by the hood and yelled harsh words at her. Her eyes filled with tears as the two pushed her down once more and asked one simple question before storming off. "GET OUT OF OUR WAY BLOOD SUCKER!" Winter sat up and said a muffled apology "I-i'm sorry..." she had no reason to apologize! But the nicer side of her made her say sorry, because she felt like it was her fault for making them angry. She had already gotten to the tree, as she leaned against it, wiping her tears with the sleeve of her hoodie.

She rested her head on her knees, practically curled up in a ball. "What a perfect start to my day..." she muttered to herself. Once again she had been unable to stand up for herself. She knows she has a stronger side... she saw it when she yelled at a girl for being rude to her cousin. Why couldnt she bring that side of herself out again? Its not like she wants to be rude, she just wants to be able to become strong when she needs to. Never letting anyone get her down. Its just not fair, people bully others for attention they want but are unable to get, this comes from people that have trouble at home. Sounds like someone she knows, herself... Even after the death of her parents, she lived on knowing what they would want from her, they would never want her to be a bully. If only all people thought the same as her...

It seemed almost impossible for Sarah to bring Nova out of the dorms and not have the overly inquisitive feline run amok. Whether it was by dashing down stair after stair deeper into the dungeons or darting too quickly round corners and jumping on innocent bystanders, she never seemed to want to slow down when Sarah wanted her to. Of course, the young Slytherin wouldn’t have her any other way, for despite all the mischief Nova liked to get the pair into, she was also inherently loyal and a surprisingly good hot water bottle.

Still, as Sarah ran through the final archway into the courtyard, breath coming out in heavy gasps, she couldn’t help but reconsider her bright idea to get a cat in the first place. “Nova, please,” She shouted, as she had to clamber around a stone bench and nearly trample through a game of gobstones just to try and keep up with the nefarious cat. “Don’t make me bring the leash back out,” it was a threat she’d used on more than one occasion, and despite it never really working, she was sure she noticed Nova slow to a more sensible pace which allowed her to catch up. She found herself wondering once again whether Nova really could understand her.

She’d just about reached her cat when a loud voice from a nearby group caught her attention. She paused, eyes slightly widening as she noticed the two students crowded around a smaller girl on the floor. She felt a twist in her gut, knowing something wasn’t right. Nova seemed to sense it too, as she made her way back to the Slytherin, tail flicking against her leg.

She started towards the scene, brow furrowed and fingers twitching to grab the wand just inside of her pocket. She could pick bullies out of a crowd easily, and even if she’d not heard the words clearly herself, she could tell that the pair was clearly bothering the girl. By the time she reached the girl, she was alone, and Sarah had to stop herself from going off in the direction her two antagonists had disappeared. A detention wouldn’t do her any good and she knew she’d likely not be able to hold off throwing a hex or two if she left now.

“Hey, I’m sorry those prats said that to you,” she said instead, frown only deepening when she noticed how the girl had curled up on herself. There were few things she hated more than bullies, perhaps it was because she lived with one (even if her father was more covert in his own behaviour). But her favour was even further lost when said bully picked on someone who couldn’t or wouldn’t stand up for themselves. She realised her mouth had formed into something akin to a snarl than anything else, and thought it perhaps best not to keep it that way else the girl may think she was snarling at her. “You really shouldn’t apologise for sitting and minding your own business too, you know,” she added, knowing that despite not seeing the entire altercation, this girl had more likely than not done nothing wrong.

She sat there in silence for a while, well before a girl walked up to her. Hearing the sound of footsteps near her, she lifted her head and peered up. A girl with bright green hair, who obviously saw her get pushed around was now inches away from her. "I-its fine..." she mumbled, rubbing her puffy red eyes. Winter hated when she could stick up for her family members, but never herself nor her friends. She was so tired of people pushing her around, telling her what to do, and being straight up rude it was terrible. Home problems or not they need to learn some respect.

Winter was sure this girl was a slytherin, no idea of her name, or why she had bothered to come up to her, but she stiffled a smile. At least someone cares enough to wander up to her whilst in distress. Strangers like this amazing girl, proved not only that there were good people in the world, but also that no matter what someone always cares, weather it be in the shadows, or in the bright light there will always be someone who cares. Winter continued to look at this girl as once more she began talking. She seemed to almost be snarling at her, some anger mixed with deep meaning. She was obviously trying to get the message across.

She spoke to winter about how she should not allow others to do such harsh things, especially when she had done absolutely nothing wrong. Winter looked down, she knew the girl was right, she just couldnt bring herself to stick up for herself. "Y-yea i know... im sorry.. i-i dont know why but i just cant stick up for myself...." she had an aweful studder, mostly because of how shy she was, and the bullies from not that long ago werent any help with that. She was fearful of saying harsh words to someone not just considering they could possibly hurt her worse but it was also the fact that she always hated hurting anyones feelings, even a bullys. Her Aunt had always got on her about that, saying she could stick up to what her family would call 'puny' humans. Winter didnt see it that way though, she saw it as everyone is equal and deserves the same amount of respect. Sure her family wanted her to know that humans were below them power wise, and just maybe thats right, but winter chooses to respect all and earn the respect of others, she doesnt wish to scare others just to get the respect she deserved from the beginning.

"Uhm.. im Winter Wolfhartz... and you are?"

Little did winter know, she was about to change big time! No more bullies would be getting to her. There was a side of her just waiting to get out and as bad as it wants to burst through her shy attitude, it needs help. As do the most of us with issues of our own. She had no idea but this wonderful stranger was about to help her with something not even a million galleons would be equal to. She had just met one of her bestest friends.

Sarah bit back the harsh, “It’s not fine,” which threatened to escape her lips, knowing that the girl probably already knew that. You didn’t say fine unless you were anything but. Sarah would know – practically the queen of fine and okay, and that one very peculiar occasion when she’d accidentally said peachy keen jelly bean, and vowed never again. The point being that Sarah knew a thing or two about pretending to be fine when she really wasn’t. She’d been hiding behind a mask for years now, ever since the accident, ever since her loss, and the mask didn’t seem to be slipping anytime soon.

Still, even if she far too often sometimes ignored her own advice, she still made sure she gave it to others when they needed to hear it. and it was clear that this girl needed at least a few words of encouragement.

“Winter, nice to meet you,” She smiled at the girl and held her hand out for her to take, a formality she often didn’t think necessary here at Hogwarts, but she hoped it might help the girl uncurl from around herself. Making yourself so small wouldn’t help in the long run. “I’m Sarah… Lightwood,” She tagged her last name on with almost an imperceptible hesitation. Hers was a name sometimes well-known in particular wizarding circles and it came with misconceptions of bigotry and self-entitlement which Sarah liked to distance herself from. As if sensing her witch’s slight unease, Nova pressed up against the Slytherin’s leg once more, butting her head against Sarah’s ankle and looking up at her with oddly knowing eyes. After a moment the cat took a few cautious steps towards Winter and tilted her head in curiosity. Sarah smiled fondly.

Without an invitation to join her, Sarah gracefully sat down on the grass a few feet away from Winter, stretching her legs out and letting her arms hold her up behind her back. The easy confidence which followed the girl – perfectly practised over the years to hide any nerves she ever felt – allowed her to make herself comfortable even when she was the one intruding on someone else’s space. It was also this confidence which enabled Sarah to stick her nose in where it wasn’t necessarily meant to be and caused her to speak again.

“It’s not can’t. You can stick up for yourself, I’m sure, you just haven’t learnt how yet. Let me help,” Sarah said, her charitable streak clearly continuing further than just helping out a lost first year in the corridors and making recommendations on which charms textbook contained the least nonsense. She offered Winter a smile, the one she’d been practising since last Christmas to let her look more approachable and less frightening as people had tended to dub her in her first year. Her bright eyes and sharp features were easy to intimidate, but she’d almost mastered the art of smiling and knew the one she offered Winter was friendly. “First, you need to stop apologising when you’ve done nothing to apologise for,” Sarah said, realising the girl had even apologised for not apologising – how terribly Hufflepuff, she mused.
