The Most Response-Deserving Letters
A few days had passed since the sorting, and Mari still had not heard from Mum, Dad, Lucy, or Grace. Of course, Dad wouldn't write until he had news from the Muggle world (and being an accountant, as Mari knew, didn't bring news until the spring, really), Lucy would be too invested in her new school year, and Grace was too young to know how to send an owl independently. Mum, though, should have been thrilled to hear her Hogwarts house, as that was all she talked about before Mari's departure on the Hogwarts Express. After one day, two days, three days, four...Mari's anxiety rose. Maybe her family was hurt or worse, killed? She knew that there were no known dark wizards at the time, and her family, quite honestly, wasn't an obvious target, but that didn't mean that their murders were impossible..
Mari thus decided to take matters into her own hands. She would write another note, to each of her family members, forcing response. Last night she spent hours crafting the most response-deserving notes to each of her family members, and she now carried the notes in their thick stack in the Owlery, looking for the most reliable owl to deliver the parchments. Each note had its own personality: Dad's, on top, was of course the most Muggle-looking, and Mari even affixed a stamp to the upper right corner. Grace's, on the other hand, had been designed with personalized drawings of Princess Grace, riding a rainbow-colored unicorn. In the middle, Mum's and Lucy's letters were simple, yet elegant, both detailing every possible detail of life at Hogwarts: Mum's minus the information regarding cute boys, Lucy's minus the information regarding mundane classes. As Mari toyed with the string binding the four notes together, staring fixedly at a small barn owl, she admitted to herself that she had, quite frankly, crafted works of art.
"No, not you," she muttered softly to the owl. She turned slightly. Next to the barn owl was a medium-sized tawny, who returned her stare with a laser-focused one of his own. He looked like an irritable owl but also one who looked like he would take his job seriously. Mari stepped forward, warily and murmured to the owl, "Are you certain you will be able to deliver this to 18 Wicker Place, Holt? These are very important; they cannot be lost."
He nibbled at her fingers in an annoyed, yet affirmative way; Mari jolted. "Ouch!" The owl was unaware of Mari's mechanism for coping with her anxiety was to chew her fingernails to nubs. As the finger the owl bit began to bleed, she furrowed her brow and sighed, adding, "Okay, okay, I'm sorry I did not believe in you. Just please do not do that again! Now on you go, and remember - it's important!"
The owl flew off, leaving Mari alone in the Owlery once more. She bit her lip. Mari knew her family was okay, yes, but hopefully these letters would bring the confirmation of their safety through their responses. But for now? She needed to shift her worry to what to do about her bleeding finger...
