Crushing Thoughts
For the first time in his life, Henry was staring off into space out a window; completely still. It wasn’t often that he found himself not twitching or tapping, not moving a single muscle. It was like he couldn’t turn of his brain at any moment, only when he was hyper focused. However, he kind of was at the moment. For once, he wasn’t hyper focused on a task, but on a thought.
After a few months, his family was finally getting the hang of sending mail via owl. It was still kind of a strange concept, and Henry was still wary of approaching the owls, but they were now much more consistent about sending mail every other week. After finishing up with classes, Henry had made his way to the owlery, expecting to see the owl he had sent off with his last letter holding a new letter. As he had predicted, there was the owl with a letter in its beak. Excited to read what his family was up to this time, Henry ripped it open and read it quickly.
Upon reaching his mum’s second paragraph, he froze.
Liam had gotten engaged. By the way his mum spoke, she wasn’t entirely pleased with the whole thing. She said he had only just met the girl at university a month after the term had started, which meant they had been together for three months. Henry didn’t know much about relationships, but apparently this was really fast. Despite his mum’s concerns, Henry didn’t see what the problem was, since it was Liam’s decision. But it made him think. What was it like to love someone like that?
Thus, he was sitting still, lost in thought. Daniel had once admitted to him about having a crush on a girl at school, but Henry could never understand why. Daniel attempted to explain it, but Henry still didn’t understand why. He was told it was the way she looked, the feeling of being around her, but Henry continued to question Daniel. His older brother eventually brushed it off as Henry being childish, but that had been a year ago. If Daniel could have a crush, couldn’t Henry? He’d met a few girls at school, but none of them had made him feel anything like he imagined a crush would. Was he overthinking this? He was only eleven, after all.
Too lost in thought, Henry failed to notice an owl come in to land near his waist. Without warning, the creature bit him; hard.
“Ouch!” He exclaimed, jumping back and gripping his hand tightly. “What was that for?” He asked, only realizing after he noticed the cut on his finger, that the letter from his mum had dropped to the dirty floor.

Crushing Thoughts
Paige was heading up to the owlery to send off a letter to both her mother and her older sister, Amelia. Amelia had just gotten out of the hospital. She says she still had cuts and bruises up and down her arms, let alone a broken leg. But she was lucky to be alive. That's what the nurses said. Amelia had gotten into a really bad car accident. Paige was a bit scared. Her sister weak. It's not something she liked to picture.
As for her mom, well just another letter wishing her a very happy birthday. Her birthday had been yesterday but nothing special really happened. Her closest friend, Simon Kincaid, had sang her happy birthday and given her a beautiful necklace that she now wears everyday. She fingered the necklace that was glistening around her neck. She pretty much thanked her mother for her new blue high top converse.
She rounded the corner as she re-read her letter to be sure it was alright to Amelia. She didn't want her sister to know she was scared. Her neat handwriting took up the whole piece of parchment. She arrived at the owlery and looked up to see a owl bite another student. Paige ran up and gently grabbed the owl so it wouldn't bite her and let the owl stand on her arm. Paige loved birds very much. She turned to the red head who was now holding the bleeding cut on his finger. She reached into her bag and took out a clean wipe for cuts. If the boy would allow, she would wipe the cuts and than place a bandage on it. "You okay?" She leaned down and handed him letter that had fallen. "Is this yours?"

Crushing Thoughts
Henry jumped, both startled and embarrassed, at the presence of another student. He had been too deep in thought to hear her coming, and too startled by the bite to notice her come around the corner. He took another step back from the owl, allowing her space to pick it up. Owls were new to him, so their care and personalities were strange. Perhaps he could learn more about them, for the next time he came to the owlery. When the girl had the owl, she reached into her bag and Henry watched her pull out some first-aid looking stuff. “Thank you,” he said, offering out his hand for her. It still stung a little bit, but now it was at least protected against any infection.
“Yeah, I’m fine, it just stings a bit,” he commented, watching her lean over and grab something. “Oh! Yes, thank you, I didn’t realize I had dropped it.” Henry took the letter from her hands, checking it over to make sure it wasn’t dirty. Despite the contents of the letter, he didn’t want to disrespect it by making it dirty. Though, the news contained within the letter wasn’t bad. Henry blinked hard against the stupid thoughts milling about in his brain. It took conscious effort to look back up at the girl and smile.
“I’m Henry. You sending a letter off?” He asked while offering a hand to shake. She looked familiar, he was sure they were in the same house, but they hadn’t introduced themselves yet. It was always nice to meet people in his house, that way he had friends to talk to when he was in the common room. “I send my mum letters every other week, just to keep her updated. Let her know I’m alive, you know?” Henry said, feeling the energy to ramble on coming back to him. “I’m muggle-born, y’see, so this whole magic boarding school thing is still making her freak out a bit,” he laughed, waving the letter around a bit before adding, “although her mind is currently occupied by something else.”

Paige turned to set the owl down in front of her but nodding to let the boy- Henry- know that she was listening. She turned to shake his offered hand as she smiled. She turned once more to take her letter out of her pocket. She started to tie to the leg of the owl. "I'm Paige Chase. You may call me Paige, Chase, I'm really open to nicknames." She stopped before side glancing at Henry. "Except, well, mudblood. But your a muggle born too, you say? So I bet you know all about that dang word." She shook her head.
"Yeah, I am sending off. To both my mother and my sister. My Birthday was on the tenth, so just thanking them. " She didn't feel the need to mention that her sister was curfew in the hospital and that she was very scared. She set the letter down, not noticing that her ' to Amelia, feel better! ' on the front was showing. "Occupied? Too occupied for her own son?" She leaned against the stone. "Everything all right there?" The owl pecked her so she turned back to the owl. She realized that her letter was showing so she snatched it up and tied it to the owl with the one for her mom. She recited the address and than the owl was off.
She turned to Henry. "Need some help with your owl there? I just love animals."

Crushing Thoughts
It was a little nice to have someone else to talk to. Henry had never been so occupied by the thoughts in his mind before, and it was kind of unsettling. “It’s nice to meet you Paige,” he said, a small smile crossing his face. He was genuinely glad to meet her, for real, since he needed something to take his mind off the letter. When she mentioned being open to nicknames, except one, Henry flashed back to recent events in the trophy room. “Er, yeah, I know all about it,” he stammered, remembering the boy who had told him it was a compliment. He was glad to know that it wasn’t, but it still confused him that the boy would try and convince him otherwise. It also kind of struck him, that he was trusting enough to believe him.
“Oh! Really?” Henry exclaimed, his small smile turning into a grin. “Happy belated birthday, then,” he added, always willing to wish someone a happy birthday, even if he barely knew them. Why wouldn’t he want to wish them a good day? Henry glanced at the owl she was attaching her letter to, looking away quickly as words caught his eye. It wasn’t his business; he shouldn’t be reading it. Luckily, she noticed as well and closed it back up, finishing off the tying. “Yeah. Er, she’s occupied with a different son. My older brother, Liam, just got engaged. She’s kind of focused on that right now.” He mentioned, not finding it to be information that was too sensitive to share. “It just, had me thinking, y’know? I mean, he’s ten years older than me, but what’s it like to be married? Or, even, to like someone?” He began rambling, his inability to filter his words jumping into the conversation uninvited.

Henry did seem to know the horrid term. When he wished her a happy belated, she smiled at him. "Thanks!" When Henry mentioned his mom was occupied with a different son, Paige shrugged. "That's cool that he's getting married. I don't blame you. Thinking that one day you must get be getting married too? Weird." Paige looked out at the clouds. A nice breeze was coming in, and it felt quite nice. "Now- liking someone. Ugh. I've been there." She looked down and raised her eyes. "I was too late, another girl had already caught his eye. Me and him are best friends now." She crossed her arms that had gotten goose bumps from the sudden breeze.
"Your telling me you've never liked someone? Like, not even as a kid? Not even a silly crush?" Paige laughed. "That's part of having a childhood Henry" She joked. She hoped he knew she was joking. She looked out once more. She turned to the owls in the owlery and walked around, admiring them. "I feel so bad, like, I know they like to do this. But they should be able to roam free. Beautiful things. But, wolves are better." She laughed at the sudden change of subject. She really liked wolves. "What do you think? Owls or wolves?"

Grinning at Paige’s response, Henry nodded. He always took the opportunity to wish people happy birthday, or just for them to have a good day. It was nice seeing the smile it usually got when he did it. Henry felt his face get a bit warm when she said it was weird to think about one day getting married. He knew it was kind of silly, he was only eleven, after all, but it just happened. Liam was getting married, so Henry was thinking about marriage. It was a little bizarre, but also a little romantic, the idea of spending the rest of your life with a single person. He wanted that when he was older. It seemed, though, that Paige knew what it was like to have a crush on someone. That was good, maybe he could ask her how she knew.
“I mean, I don’t really know if I have. I’m not sure what it feels like. Could you describe it?” He asked, his hands wringing together nervously. Maybe it wasn’t that he hadn’t had a crush, but just that he hadn’t been able to define the feeling. Daniel and Diana had both told him about crushes they had, but they never really explained why. It was something that he had never really asked about, either. Now he had his chance, so he was going to take it.
Paige turned toward the owls, changing the conversation a bit. Henry was known for changing conversations just as quickly, so it wasn’t weird at all that the subject had changed. Hmm, owls or wolves? Henry thought both creatures were pretty cool, though he had never met a wolf before. “I think owls. Wouldn’t it be cool to get to fly?” He asked, thinking about the feeling of soaring through the air. It seemed soothing.

[font=Courier New] Paige pondered for a moment, thinking of how to word this. She could see Henry wringing his hands together. "Okay. How it feels... well, it's like-" Paige waved her hands in a circular motion. "A feeling. For the person. I guess. Your feelings are stronger than when they are for normal friends. When that person is hurt, you feel hurt... emotionally? You enjoy being around with them. You feel happy when they talk to you. When they smile at you. Not just like a friend, but you feel happy." Paige took a breath and shrugged. "I guess its also a feeling you can't explain." Paige laughed. "Does that make sense?"
When Henry replied that he thinks owls were better, Paige pretended to look confused. "Okay, owls... what you said is true which is why owls are one of my favorites. But wolves! I mean, come on! They are so amazing... and, and elegant!" Paige laughed. Wolves were so amazing. "I have a pitbull back at home, and I named him Wolfe. He's amazing. The best. I begged my mom for him when he was a pup. She said yes, finally. So we got him. He's HUGE now, though. You probably don't care." Paige shrugged and smiled at him.

Crushing Thoughts
Henry was a little surprised to have his question met with a very long-winded response. Even with everything Paige had explained, there had still been a lot he hadn’t really understood. The corner of his mouth turned up a little bit when she laughed about it being hard to explain. He thought he might have had feelings he didn’t understand. There was that one fleeting moment when talking with K where he felt funny. It wasn’t a feeling he recognized but maybe it was….Henry gasped audibly as a realization hit and he felt himself turn a bright shade of red. “I-I think I do,” he responded, realizing that all of the stuff she had said clicked when he thought about that instance with K. But K was a boy. Could he like boys?
Henry laughed a little at Paige’s enthusiasm toward wolves. He could understand that enthusiasm, it was how he felt toward building things. Sure, he liked owls, but it didn’t spark the deepest joy in his heart, the way wolves appeared to with Paige. When Paige commented that Henry probably didn’t care, his brows creased together. “I think if something’s worth saying aloud, then it’s important.” He responded. “So, I care about Wolfe. I bet he’s a cool dog. We’ve never had a dog, there are too many of us to add on the responsibility of an animal.” Henry commented. “At least, that’s what my mum says,” he tagged on with a shrug. Having never had a pet, he didn’t understand the responsibility of caring for an animal.

Paige smiled when Henry gasped and then turned red. "You do?" Paige brushed a stray piece of hair out of her face. " you do? Ooh, you DO have a crush! What's their name?" Paige had automatically said they instead of she. It had become a habit. She had a friend that was gender fluid, so it just came naturally to Paige and she wasn't about to correct the slip up. Paige smiled real big at her new... friend?
"Wolfe is literally the coolest dog. Here, look. She pulled from her pocket some pictures her mom had sent her. "That's him with sunglasses- he wouldn't leave them alone so we put them on him." Paige laughed. "Him eating my mom's birthday omelet that my 9 year old brother made for her without us knowing, and then Wolfe spit it out... Here's him guarding a teddy bear we for for him. Here's him wearing a sweater..." She was laughing. She loved Wolfe so much. She missed him everyday. "And this... this is him laying on my bed while I'm here." She missed him more than her sister. That's wrong. But... Wolfe was always Paige's friend when she came home. After Patricia decided they weren't friends, leaving Paige friendless. Wolfe was there. He didn't move as she hugged him a cried all night. He didn't wine. He just kicked Paige's nose. He stayed by her side. He growled whenever Patricia's name was said. That was because Paige had said that name whn she was crying. He was a really smart dog.
