The owlrey was one of the most uncommonly visited places for Adlai. She'd only really ever come up here when she had a letter that needed to be delivered, which wasn't all to often, at least not this year as it was still very early into the first semester.
Strangely enough being up here made her rather nervous due to the amount of owls flying in and out at all hours of the day through all kinds or weather. She was afraid one may run into her if she wasn't careful, though that fear has yet to come true.
Nonetheless, this time around she had traveled up the winding staircase of the owlrey with her dear friend Elena. Adlai had not been able to write to Elena during the summer as her parents, grandparents, and other assorted family members were coming and going, left and right, and by the end of a busy day writing a letter wasn't the first thing she needed to do, what she did need to do however is get some well deserved sleep.
However, there were days she did wish would have written to Elena, as she deeply missed the company of her head strong, determined, and adventurous friend. Though there wasn't much she could do about it now. Instead she would have to enjoy Elena's company.
Reaching the top of the stairs Adlai let out a heavy huff as she caught her breathe.
"Finally!" she groaned dramatically.

Elena did not have postive recollections about this place. She had been up here a grand total of three times the preceding school year and each of those experiences had been less than a pleasant one. She wondered if it was a curse of sorts, as if she was doomed to run into something negative every time the Gryffindor wandered up there and that was why she avoided this place with a passion electing only to come up here when absolutely necessary though she had decided to humour Adlai this time and accompany her on this trip up the tower full of owls, the winding staircase greeting them, Elena shuddering as a thought flashed through her head. "I fell down that once, broke my leg." She confessed as they climbed.

It was a miracle she had gotten out of that twist. Elena had brought along some owl treats in the off chance Flutters was around and not off hunting. That owl really liked to be out and about though she supposed it was a good quality for a bird who's primary role was flying around delivering letters though sometimes she worried he would tusse with something that was too much for him to handle and it would yield diastrous results. She did not know how she would cope with that and decided not to think about that. Concering her luck with this tower so far, Elena would not be surprised if that was the case though she very much preferred it not to be so.

The female had to suppress a laugh at Adlai's remark of relief that they had reached the end of the fancy little staircase that winded all the way to the top. "Tired already? We still have to go down, don't forget." She said grinning at the jab at her Hufflepuff companion. Truthfully, Elena had not noticed how long nor how complicated the path up here was, perhaps because she had navigated it so many times she barely needed to pay attention or focused on some other matters at hand. She had never come up here with someone else though it did feel nice to have someone else along, being surrounded by a bunch of owls peering at you was not exactly a comforting thought.

Adlai let out a dramatic groan as she looked down the stair case. "I don't know the stairs don't just magically move up and down theirselves. That would be a lot easier...at least for me." She said blissfully recalling to escalators from the malls of home.
As she finally caught her breathe she looked at all the owls as some flew in and out, while others nestled in their little cubbies. "I've always wondered as to why owls were the ones to deliver our letters and not some other type of bird. Like a pigeon or swallow...or hawks! Hawks are pretty cool."
Adlai had even wondered before as to why they didn't use dragons, but then the more she thought about it the more self explanatory it became. For one they were far too big, and then of course they breathe fire! Constant fire wouldn't be very fun for the school administration to deal with.
Let alone for her to deal with.

"Then again maybe people do use different kinds of winged beasts and I just haven't seen it yet. If that is the case I would love to see it." She said watching an owl gently flutter into a cubby and cuddle up with its other inhabitant. Owls weren't that bad, some just didn't have very good landing skills or very decent aim. She recalled the many times she witnessed letter and packages fall from the sky in the great hall during meal time and land in its receivers plate, or sometimes on top of the receivers head.

That would be a welcome addition, she thought as the idea floated through her head. It was not a bad suggestion and one she wondered why the founders of the castle had not implemented. Literally, every staircase you stumbled upon within the castle moved in some form or fashion and you had to get acquainted with this fairly quickly or you wind up roaming the halls of Hogwarts lost forever. The task would seem daunting to any first-year but really, you grew to make sense of the system as you progressed through the term. So why in Merlin's beard was this the only normal staircase and as Adlai pointed out, it woud save them a whole lot of energy and time if the thing just leviated them to the top. Then again, maybe it was good it was stationary, who knew where she would have wound up if she fallen down that staircase and it had moved. She tried not to think about that thought.

"Maybe we can jinx it to move." She said ruefully ducking as an great horned owl flew above them, it's wings flapping as it went to perch on it's roost within the Owlery. Well, she was right about one thing, they clearly didn't have very accurate sense of directions but they would get the job done somehow someway. "Somehow, I don't think hawks and owls would get along. Wouldn't want a hawk making a late-night snack of some of the smaller birds here." She couldn't bear the thought of what she would do if something happened to Flutters, no she was fine with her little fluffy bird and it would remain that way.

"You haven't met Flutters yet, have you?" Elena asked turning towards the tower wondering if he was in and not off and about hunting down some poor critter. There was only one way to find out. Putting two fingers to her mouth, she let out a shrill whistle that was bound to echo for miles and a very affirmative hoot sounded from inside. A large brown owl erupted from it's perch diving down to perch on Elena's shoulder nuzzling her hair affectionaly she ran her hand over his beak laughing a bit. "This is Flutters, a bit mischevious at times but useful." The owl would blink it's eyes before locking its eyes on the Hufflepuff as if wondering what to make of the curious person his owner had brought along.

Adlai's brows raised in quizzical wonder as she watched the winged beast flutter from its perch to Elena's shoulder. "He's yours?" she asked as she cocked her head to the side.
She knew some students owned their own owls but she didn't know said owls living in the tower. She assumed they lived in the dorms with them.
"Hello Flutters."
She was somewhat unnerved by the creature since she knew that owls were a bird of prey, sometimes she couldn't help but scream whenever one swooped down to receive a letter from her or to delivery a letter to her.

"He's beautiful." She added.
Flutters was indeed lovely, his features were complimented by the subtle light that poured into the tower, along with the towers material structure in general.
"Poor thing must be freezing up here along with the others." It was beginning to become rather cold, she couldn't imagine what the poor dears may go through when winter fully arrives even though she was sure their features kept them warm, she couldn't help but think of how the bitter cold may affect them. During the early winter last year she had seen owls covered in snow arrive and it made her heart ache for them though there wasn't anything in particular that she knew she could do about it.

"He is indeed, barely managed to sway my father to buy him." She said glancing at the creature which sat there blinking taking in it's surrounding. Knowing them, she was just surprised her parents had agreed to the prospect of buying the bird but she was not about to pass up such a chance and here he was, in the flesh. The owl simply shuffled it's wings in response to Adlai's response while he perched peacefully, the big eyes of his darting around here and there. Problem was, despite having only primary purpose within the school, Elena knew full well by heart that Flutters was by heart a hunter evidened by how he was looking around hopefully for some small thing that might catch his attention. Luckily for them though, they were far up in the Owlery where the chances of such a thing happening was slim. Although, she didn't suspect he had gone out on one or two hunting endeavors in his time here.

"It's sort of like having someone to vent to when you don't, you know? It's like they understand you."
She was a firm believer in this fact that despite how different they were, owls were capable of gauging their owner's mood. They were intelligent animals and knew when something was amiss, that and their talons and beaks made them quite a feisty opponet to fend off if someone tried their luck at having a go at the owl's owner. She had been the victim of many accidental pecks from Flutters, accidental perhaps but not without pain. As if sensing he had no other purpose than to sit idly, the owl began to poke it's beak into Elena's brown hair digging around for something.

"Hey, hey, stop that! Alright, alright, here, you big baby." She said reaching into her pocket pulling out a few treats which she thrust at him and in a flash of a beak, it was gone, the sound of ominous crunching heard as he digested them with a satisfactory hoot. "We should knit them like little blankets or something, put it in their little perches for them." Elena said the idea corssing her ming as Adlai painted the imagery of the harsh winter cold berating the tower full of owls. It was not something she entertained, The thought wasn't a bad one if they every got around to it. A flap of wings and the owl took off again flying over Adlai's head and upwards back to his perch. "Yeah, he comes down every now and then to say hello before slinking back to his little area." She said grinning.

"Blankets for the owls..." She repeated, mulling over the idea, putting a hand on her hip. As silly as it may sound, She'd actually love to do that. Though it may take a awhile sine she was sure new owls arrived at Hogwarts every year with the students. Nonetheless, it would give her something to do during her free time. Though she was sure she'd have to speak to a professor about it, who may have to ask the Headmaster.

Putting the notion aside Adlai ducked as Flutters flew over her, as she was unsure if the owl was going to land on her head.
"Ah, I see. Flutters is similar to my grandfather, on my fathers side, that way." She went on recall the multiple times her grandfather had come and gone during family gatherings, as he wasn't one you seemed to like relatively crowded places. "He participates in activities for a bit before going back to his own space." she explained.

"Not that it's a bad thing. I just tend to be a social butterfly, though you already know that." Of course Elena would. If it wasn't for that the two of them would have probably never met or have ended up as close as they are now.

It was not a bad analogy, she thought to herself watching the brown and black speck that was Flutters grow smaller and smaller as he flew higher before disappearing within the Owlery. If she needed him again, she could whistle again and he would come zooming out, it was a neat little trick she had picked up and one that tended to work most of the times, she had come to find. "Not a bad thing, different things float different people's boats." She said smiling running a hand through her hair wringing out any stray owl feathers that may have remained behind when the massive bird took flight. He had a habit of doing that, whether it was intentional or not, she had a feeling she would never come to find out.

"Careful, you have one there."
The Gryffindor said reaching out a hand to brush off a stray owl feather that had deposited itself on Adlai's shoulder. That was one of the cons of owning such a large bird, well one of the more minor incovenices but still an incovenice. They seemed to shed their feathers more frequently and she wasn't sure if that was a good or bad thing, perhaps it was just Flutters being himself. Knowing him, she would not doubt it one bit. "What's your family like, I haven't heard you talk about them too much?" She asked when Adlai brought up the topic of her grandfather. Granted, Elena tended to avoid such topics mostly but she supposed it couldn't hurt to ask, it couldn't be worser than her own family full of Slytherins, that much she was sure of.

"You should try investing in one of these guys or maybe something else if an owl isn't your preferred way." She added looking up at the various perches and slots that housed possibly hundreds of birds depending on how large the student body is. "They make for nice companions other than being overglorified messengers." She liked to think of Flutters more than that, he had helped her through a few rocky moments and only went to show the power that these creatures possessed. They did cost a pretty penny or two so once you got one, you were probably stuck with it so might as well think long and hard about it.

"My family is chaotic, but a good kind of chaotic," She started. Adlai had nothing against talking about her family. They weren't bad people, and she loved them very dearly. Though sometimes like any other family they could be a bit of a pain.
"We seem to be scattered all over the world at this point since my family lives in Wales, and then my dads family lives in Iceland, and my moms lives in Afghanistan...we stick together though. Whenever we're able to scrap together enough money we go on trips to see them or they come to see us." She explained.

She remembered the several late night and early morning phone calls she would hear her parents on as they spoke to their parents telling them all about her and her sisters, telling them how much they missed them, and how they'll all be together again soon.
"At home it's me, my mom, my dad, and my two sisters, Dorothy and Johanna. They're both younger than me, Johanna is the baby of the family. We also have a pygmy rabbit named Dexter, which is why I don't think it would be wise for me to come home with an owl one day."
She recalled the time last year when someone's owl came swooping down from the sky and tore a stuffed rabbit she had been working on into pieces.
She didn't want that happening to Dexter.

She thought about that. A good kind of chaotic..the words bounced around in her head. She knew just from this simple analysis how similar yet different Adlai's and her families would be. They were fiery, perhaps a bit too much at times but in the end unlike Elena's family, they had morals, ethics, they knew what was right and what was wrong. "My brother went to Afghanistan once, something about getting a swarm of nifflers in order. That was an interesting story." She had never been to that part of the world, matter of fact, Elena hadn't traveled anywhere really, she had just stayed her happy, little self within London. Her parents were the ones that did all the traveling and even that was for buisness, personal entertainment was not a part of their vocabulary.

"No, that probably would not be a very good combination." She agreed just thinking of the horrible things Flutter might do if he even caught sight of Dexter. He seemed content with his daily salary of owl treats and she intended to keep it that way though he was at his prime, a predator by heart and she could not change that. "But if you ever want to send a letter home or something and there's no school owl around, Flutters will happily do it. " She piped up. She was sure he would be willing having seen Adlai now and categorized her as friendly though it would probably take a bit of convincing via owl treats before he actually gave in, he could be stubborn like that.

"So you're the eldest, huh? I'm the middle child of mine, have an older brother, Darren and a younger..well..had a younger sister." Her voice trailed off at that her smile faltering a bit at the mention. Her poor sister, that innocent, sweet soul. She had done nothing, nothing and for one simple, mis-step, it had cost her everything. "Things happened." She finally admitted the though still vivid in her brain now. One day, it would all be alright but it tore at her heart to acknowledge that someone so close to her could be snatched away just like that permanetly.
