Ezekiel sat quietly in the Owlery, his quill running across the paper, another letter going out to his mother. As wrote away he listened to the breeze going through the windows of the room, and the soft hoots of the assorted owls surrounding him. It felt like the time just flew by every time he was up here, maybe it was because he was able to get away from the hustle and bustle on the lower floors. It was quieter, and Ezekiel loved every minute of it.

His quill continued to run along with the paper, in a simple flowing script. Just a short message home and still a hope of a return letter coming back soon.

He finished his letter and packed it nicely into the envelope with his addresses within nicely along the outside. Ezekiel gave the letter over to one of the owls and then dug around in his pocket for a treat before sending him on his way. The owl happily ate his snack before flying off towards Ezekiel's home. With that done Ezekiel turned back to gather his things and head back down to the common room to catch up on some homework.

Opeila sighed when reaching the top of the stairs of the owlery. Was there a point sending the letter she planned to send? Probably not. Anyway. She couldn't just not check on her father and grandmother, right? Even if they didn't send anything back? Would it make her a bad daughter if she just stopped to write, like they did?

She took out the letter and turned it in her hands, again and again. The brunette knew that nothing would come back to her, it never did, and suddenly she had the urge to just throw that stupid paper down the stairs. What did the even make the effort for?

All she got back was a few weeks of tense waiting before she gave up. Opeila felt ridiculous to still send letters to her family, which obviously gave a damn.

Anyway.

Opeila would send it anyway. Because she didn't give a damn.
With another sigh the little girl entered the owlery. Apart from a boy she didn't know, there was no student in the owlery. She briefly nodded in his direction. Only the owls.

That's what she liked about the owlery. Being alone with the owls was just peaceful. Looking into their big, knowing eyes made Opeila feel less alone. Like they knew everything that went on inside her, how she felt, what she feared. And they would never give it away.

She lured a great grey owl down on her shoulder, bribing it with a piece of bread, but hesitated to put the letter on the birds leg. When it was gone, it was gone, no going back.
Was it worth the disappointment?

Opeila was aware that she must seem weird, standing there, an owl on one shoulder, a letter in the other hand and not doing anything with either.
Nervously biting her lip, she turned her head to the boy.

"Have you- Have you ever sent a letter to someone, knowing they wouldn't reply?", she asked him. It was a weird thing to ask a stranger, she knew it, but right now she just wanted to procrastinate sending this letter.

As Ezekiel gathered his belongings to leave the owlery for likely last time, he heard a voice speaking to him. At her words, his eyes began to well with tears but he quickly wiped them away before turning to face her. "N-no, of course not. They're just busy is all. I think?" His eyes darted towards the ground, not wanting to look up towards the girl across from him.

Deep down Ezekiel knew a return letter would come back, but it would be his own a few weeks from now after he sends an owl to pick it back up from his mother's home. 'Maybe she's visiting grandma and grandpa...' He thought, but he refused to let his imagination go.

"Why do you ask?" He replied back to her, finally looking up to meet her eyes. "Are you sending out a letter you aren't expecting a reply too?" Now that Ezekiel was actually looking at the girl, he did recognize her, but only that she was also a first-year in Slytherin along with him. Since some of his other friends had left the school for some reason he has kept to himself a lot more than before, only taking notice of other students if they brought attention to themselves.
@Opeila Seilun Told you you'd have a reply when you woke up.

Opeila was surprised, when the boy needed a moment before he faced her. Did he... rub his eyes? Opeila couldn't be sure, but his hand movement looked like it. Had she just asked him something that bothered him as well? Wow. One minute was all she needed to bother people. What was wrong with her?

The boy said that 'they' were probably just busy. Opeila assumed that 'they' were his parents. Were his parents letting him down as well? "Probably. Yeah...." Just as busy as her dad and grandmother. If her mother was well and home, would they write her more often? Were they not writing, because all they had for her was bad news? The thought gave the little girl chills and she shook it off. Her mother was still there. Opeila would get to say good bye to her. She had to.

It was not a surprise when he asked her about hers. Opeila would have done the same, if she wanted to distract from herself. She nodded. "They never reply. I start to feel stupid about sending letters to them. They should reply. With the virus and everything going on, it's very reckless of them not to answer." Opeila would not consider the option that soething happened to them. Her grandmother was a seer, she would take care of herself and Opeila's father. Her mother was in the St. Mungos and still alive. Right?

Ezekiel steeled himself, avoiding his own feelings to not embarrass himself. "I'm sure they are doing alright, they might just be to busy to answer or something like that." He gave a half-hearted shrug. "It doesn't hurt to keep sending them letters though. At least then they know that we are doing okay. Right?" It was at this point Ezekiel began to smile a bit more than previously. As if he managed to convince himself that everything must be going fine.

"I'm sorry." Ezekiel said, realizing she might want to be left alone finally. "Do you want me to leave so you can finish the letter alone?" He asked, shying back towards the stairs slightly.

Just before Ezekiel made it to the edge of the door the owl he sent out previously returned, the letter still clutched in his talons and dropped it down to his feet. "Ah dang it. What happened buddy? Did you get lost on they way out of the school grounds?"

Opeila looked at the ground and nodded. It was good to believe. The boy did it right. Opeila was simply a terrible pessimist. What was so bad about some optimism? Even if it was misplaced, what was so bad about some false happiness?
When he said that it at least let them know that she was fine, she nodded again. That was right too. Doing it for them, not for an answer. But wasn't it natural to expect an answer eventually? To get worried if there didn't come one? "Yeah, that's right."

He asked her if he should leave so she could finish her letter alone. Quickly she shook her head. "No, no!" She lured the owl, that had decided to fly away, down to sit on her shoulder again- she was more than used to the weight of the big birds, their family owl, Hardin was a big one himself.
The Slytherin attached the letter to the owl's leg and sent it off. "I... It's fine. I should-"

She was interrupted by a returning owl that dropped a letter in front of the boy's feet. One bird that turned every optimistic word the boy had said into a hollow, fragile illusion. Owls didn't get lost on the grounds.
"I... I should go back to the common room.", she said quietly. Watching the boy, who more and more seemed to be denying something, that happened in front of him, was suddenly painful.

Opeila was jealous. Jealous of that boy and his almost helpless happiness. If it wasn't a mask. That sort of behaviour was familiar to her.
The first year walked to the stairs and left the owlery.
Opeila is leaving the Thread.
