Letters between approved dNPC Astrid Kovacs and @Elzabeth Gillan
September 15, 2019

Dear Elzabeth,

Hello! My name is Astrid Kovacs. I'm a first year in the house of Thunderbird. I came from a large muggle family that lived in Nevada. They just think I'm going to some special school for those with talent.. I don't understand how they would believe that.. It's quite vague, but it worked, so... Anyway, I haven't ever been outside of Nevada asides from when going to Ilvermorny. It's a large transition, really, but a fun and exciting one at that! How's Hogwarts? It's easily the more notable school. Does it live up to it's name (I don't know too much about it, except that it's more popular than Ilvermorny)?

Anyways, I find Ilvermorny interesting. How many other magic schools are out there that I've never heard of? I guess it makes sense, there's such a divide between muggles and wizards. I could understand why, though. Anyway, about me, I enjoy parties and adventures? What about you? They haven't told me much except you go to Hogwarts and that your name is Elzabeth. I guess I'm supposed to learn the rest from talking to you?

I hope we do continue to talk, I haven't made very many friends here at Ilvermorny, but it's the start of the year. Can't say it wasn't unexpected.. So, Thunderbird is Gryffindor, right? What about some of the other houses, like the Horned Serpent, Wampus, and Pukwudgie?

I attached a photo of myself, so you could what I looked like..

Dear Astrid Kovacs,

Hi! This is exciting, isn't it? I don't think I've ever talked to someone from the states so I'm sorta curious if its the way I think it is over there.

I'll answer some of your questions first before I get into some of mine, My names Elzabeth Gillan and I'm in Ravenclaw, one of the four amazing houses of Hogwarts. I think it's pretty cool here, the teachers are so helpful and the castle is so amazing and beautiful.

There are tons of other magical schools but I wouldn't be able to tell you off the top of my head, something around eleven but I could be wrong. I do like adventures but I'm not really a person who goes on one without knowing too much about it. I'm not really a party person, I prefer a nice book over loud get-togethers any time but to each their own I suppose!

I think that's all the questions I've spotted, I may have missed a few so I apologize, now off to my questions!

How is America? The people I mean, I've heard it depends on what state you're in so I guess that might be a hard question to answer. I know there's a deeper divide between muggles there and wizards than here which must be hard. I couldn't imagine my parents having such a view against each other.

Is Ilvermorny like Hogwarts? What even is Ilvermorny like? So many questions!

Anyways, I cant wait to get to know you better and learn about your side of the world, hopefully, we'll get to learn more about each other in the upcoming months!

From Elizabeth.

Dear Elzabeth,
Four seems to be a common number for houses apparently. I could understand why, though.. especially if it had to do with founders. 3 founders seems a tad too little. Beautiful and amazing castle, huh? I'd say it could probably have a run for its money if castles could ever meet each other.. I wouldn't know, though..

It seems our activities are quite different. Can't say I've ever been one to just sit around and read, although I guess I never really gave the book enough time. There have been some interesting ones I've been forced to read for school. Speaking of which, were you home-schooled or did you go to a no-maj (muggles, you call them? Interesting...) school? I went to private school before I learned about wizardry. A little side tangent is that my parents wanted to be very educated and would rather I didn't go pretend to be a warrior. Whenever I could, though, I would play with my brothers who were nice enough not to tell my parents while I provided an excuse. My parents had always been into the more old-fashioned lifestyle idea.

Well, the no-majs I've met are nice, but there certainly are evil ones.. Where I live it's a little more crowded, city-like, so most people don't really know their neighbors. It's probably because they never have to call on each other for help. As for the divide between no-majs and wizards, well, I haven't had enough time to figure that out.. Although I have noticed that there are certain groups that look at me strangely... I think those would probably be the purebloods.

I did a little more research on Hogwarts (I was curious), and it seems that they are sort of similar. They are both large castles with wonderful magic. Our sorting ceremonies are different, though? You get sorted by a hat? Please explain. Ours, we have wooden statues of each house. You have to stand on the symbol and the statues will react or do something if they want you in their house. If multiple do actions, then the wizard gets to choose. Mine was very firmly put into Thunderbird, but I was fine with that. They would also have the wand ceremony after that, whereas you guys do it before you go to Hogwarts, right? Also, we have Pukwudgies working at the school. I heard you had something else..

Sorry for the long-ish letter!
Astrid Kovacs

P.S. I'll probably be able to tell you more differences when I actually know what Hogwarts looks like...

Dear Astrid Kovacs,

It does seem like Hogwarts and Illvermorny are quite similar. To answer your question, I went to a public school before Hogwarts, my parents didn't have the time nor money to send me off to a private school or homeschool me. It seems that has given me an advantage though since they don't teach maths or any other muggle subject over here.

Public school was horrible when it came to the other children, I was called a freak among other things because of some accidents that occurred, I knew it was because of magic but for a bit I despised it, because of those incidents I didn't have many friends but its clear to me Hogwarts is much different.

Speaking of, yes were sorted by a hat. I know it sounds odd but it was a tradition that the founders started and no ones wanted to change it since. The sorting ceremony happens just before dinner, all of the first years pool up at the front and wait for the name to be called so they can go and sit on a stool and have the hat lowered on their head.

This isn't just any hat though, the sorting hat talks. It's actually quite snarky for a magic hat in my opinion. Anyways, It'll tell you if your a team player or if it sees you going far in your life and then yell out a house. It's a bit odd, statues seem to make a little more sense.

I think it's wonderful that you have a chance to choose you're own home but I'm sort of grateful we don't, I wouldn't have known where to go! If you hade to choose another house apart from the one your in, which one would you go with?

I'm excited for you to see Hogwarts, it's like no other place you've seen before!

Elzabeth,

I'm sorry to hear about that. You seem like a really nice person. It's sort of sad that no one was willing to look past these 'accidents'. I do sort of understand your hardship, although mine was never as severe unless I had 'done' something to offend the popular girls. In which case, it would be rumors, and what not which could be easily justified in some way.

A snarky hat to decide what house you get into? Personally, I would love to be sorted by it. I don't know, but for some reason, I have these hilarious ideas of random conversations I could have with it. Statues do make more sense, but it's almost awkward, just standing on a knot, waiting for a statue to do something.. It's not a very long wait, though, so I don't really know why I'm complaining. Well, I think Horned Serpent or Wampus would've been good. I would say Horned Serpent, because it represents the mind. While I might not be all that intelligent or quick to understand, I do spend a decent amount of time just thinking in my head about events that could take place. Wampus represents more the body of a wizard, and is generally for warriors, which sounds interesting to me, but it's more I think about becoming a warrior, than actually training to be one, if that makes sense.

I certainly hope I'll enjoy Hogwarts. It'd be horrible if I had to spend months at a place I hated (Liked my sarcasm? I could never hate a place with magic, unless truly evil..)
From Astrid Kovacs

P.S. Sorry for the inconsistency in length.. If you need help with the length of your letter, just tell me some favorites (animals, music, art, etc.). Have a good day!

OOC: It's fine! I had completely forgot to mention you, so I wasn't sure. I probably spend too much time on this website, so it evens out. ;)

Dear Astrid,

It's a lot better here, no one's going to make fun of me for being magic that's for sure. I'm excited about the upcoming masquerade party, I'm sure you're going to have a blast here at Hogwarts.

If you have any more questions, don't be afraid to ask. I'll do my best to answer as honestly as I can but there are some things I don't know about this place that I probably won't ever find out.

Anyways, I wanted to ask you about what you plan on doing after school. There are a lot of magical career paths here that I need to take into consideration but I don't have the slightest idea where I want to go. Do you? Do the careers there match the ones here or are they different?

My dad's an officer for the Ministry Of Magic, which basically means he investigates and tracks people who are using magic when they shouldn't or for things they don't need. Sometimes it's scary, he goes after some dangerous people and I don't know if I could ever do that.

I don't know, I still have seven more years to go, there's no point in stressing just yet.

Another thing I wanted to ask about was the pet policy over there? I know we're allowed to have certain animals but I wasn't sure if you were allowed to over there. I want an owel so bad but my parents won't let me until I'm in my third year, something about proving I'm responsible enough.

If you could have a pet (If you do have one) what kind would you have?

Elzabeth,
I sure hope I'm going to have a blast! No joke, though, from the minimal research I've done (although I did research the pet policy, Hogwarts seems really cool. I can't say it's any better than Ilvermorny, but it does seem to be an interesting place.

Do you have any idea where we will be resting while we are there? It's a question that I've sort of been keeping to myself, but I do believe it's valid. Maybe you have some information on it. Currently, though, all the questions have left my mind. I'm sure they'll come back in an hour or so.

Careers? I have no idea. I do realize I should probably make sure I get good grades in the right classes, but currently, I just need to get everything sorted out. I'm trying to make friends at Ilvermorny, packing, making sure homework is completed. It's all piling up. It's nice to have someone to talk to. I hope we continue this after my visit to Hogwarts.

Oh. Tough work. I hope he's okay. It seems like a hard job, one I would never want to go into, personally. I admire your father, though, for the work he puts in despite obvious danger.

Our policy seems to be more relaxed. Each student is only allowed one pet, but they could have a hamster, owl, cat, even horses. As for which I would want, are we allowed Kneazles?
See you soon!
Astrid
