Opeila had heard of this program called 'Quill Pals', which seemed to mainly be a means for the new first years to settle in and make some friends, a while ago already, but she had never been interested in taking the offer. The Slytherin was not quite sure what had changed, but this month... She had just done it over a whim really. And there she was now, assigned to two people, two names that didn't ring a bell. Most likely first years, the higher years were not in need of Quill Pals in most cases. They had their circles.
Opeila was not quite sure who still was in her 'circle' today. Flash. Willow? Sylvain? She barely knew Sylvain. She had never really tried to talk out the events of last year and with the next blossom ball approaching- if the Professors allowed one this year- Opeila got more conscious of it. A lot of explanations, none of them leading back to the point where they started- Quill Pals.
The second year had been paired with two girls, with unfamiliar names- likely not her house. Maybe it was good if she made more acquaintances outside of her house. Slytherins so often seemed to be... well, complicated. Opeila was aware that she could be a complicated person as well, but there were some who just... beat everything Opeila got to know so far. First in that line, Jack Burnett. Second, Selim Faust. Third... Mostly Severus Snape dorm members.
Opeila was willing to give the Quill Pal a go and even more- She'd do the first step.
So this Sunday afternoon, the young girl found herself a nice spot in the library close to a window, where the sun was shining through, and wrote letters. There were for sure worse ways to spend a Sunday afternoon!
MARCH 28TH
Dear Quill Pals,
I hope those letters reach you without further complications, but as the castle is not too big of a place, I hardly doubt it. It seems that we have been assigned as partners by the Quill Pal system and I'm happy to send the first letters away.
My name is Opeila and I am from house Slytherin. Currently I am in my second year at Hogwarts and in my house's duelling team. Am I right in my assumption that you are both first years? If so, I hope you have settled in well!
How do you like the classes? Personally I enjoy Transfiguration and Charms a lot, as well as Defense against the Dark Arts.

Once Aurora heard about Quill Pals, she immediately signs up for it. Maybe it will be much easier to talk to people since she doesn't have to meet them face to face. It was just like sending a text message using a phone, but we will be using an owl in this case. Honestly, Aurora still didn't understand why people in the wizarding world still prefer to use an owl to send messages. What if it was an emergency, is there any owl who can apparate? that must be cool. After a couple of days, Aurora received two names as her quill pals. Both names are familiar, she thinks Paige Grant is also a first-year, Opeila Winters might be too. She only heard once or twice someone mentioned Opeila's name in the hall, but she doesn't think she ever saw her around. Hopefully, both of them are nice.
Aurora grabbed a sheet of parchment and began to write with her ink and quill. She has not mastered the art of ink and quill. As much as she loved anything vintage, she prefers a pen or pencil. Sometimes Aurora hates the clumsy traits that she has. She accidentally spilled the ink a little on the parchment. She hoped both Opeila and Paige don't mind a little mess on their letter.

Paige had heard of something called quill pals, and of course, she just had to sign up. Writing to people just sounded fun!
@Opeila Winnters @Aurora RanvierDear quill pals, hello! My name is Page Grant, and I'm a first-year Hufflepuff. Dueling totally seems cool, Opeila. But, in my opineon opy opinion, it seems hard. I think quidditch is pretty interesting, or any sport in general. Aurora, your handwriting is a tad bit hard to read, I'll admit. But yes, using a quill and ink is very hard. I'm a lefty, so I smudge ink all the time. But I've been prak practicing with my right hand during my free time.
I like telling jokes, and being outside.
What are your favorite activyactivities? I like to dance whenever I can, and meet new people! Which is why I signed up for this!
Back on the subject of classes, I think herbology is pretty cool only because it's outside because we get to learn about all of these cool plants! History of magic is SOOO boring!

Dear Quill Pals,
Aurora, I agree wholeheartedly. I was raised the muggle way and went to a muggle school before Hogwarts, so I know how hard it is to switch to quill and ink. You get used to it after a few weeks though, at least I did, and if you have a nice quill, it's really fun to use it. My friend Sylvain gave me a peacock quill for my birthday (I don't even want to know how much he spent for that) and I enjoy writing with it very much. However, I don't quite understand it either. The magical world seems so ahead of the muggles in so many things, but it looks like they haven't quite figured out the writing. I had a talk with the caretaker Kit Paine about that the other day, he uses normal pencils.
Personally I am not much of a flyer, so I can't imagine Quidditch to be fun for me, but Duelling is great! You just need to be prepared to fight until you pass out, which can seem a bit scary I guess. It also depends on who you are up against. My duels weren't successful so far, but I am training regularly and surely I'll win one day.
I don't have a lot of time for favourite activities these days, to be honest. I jog on the grounds every morning, I am still trying to teach my cat, Loras, some manners and I spend a lot of time studying. The O's don't come out of nowhere after all.
To me both of your handwriting looks fine, don't worry.

Dear Quill Pals,
I am sorry Paige for my messy handwriting, but I am glad that both of you could read it. I think I do enjoy Charm, DADA, and astronomy as for classes. Herbology is fine, but I am not a big fan of the history of magic, it was fun to learn about how magic used to be, but I just don’t like to read. I don’t really like potion either haha, since a little bit of mistake can ruin the whole thing, although I prefer potion over the history of magic. But I will still try my best on every subject even though I don’t like some of them. Opeila, I would love to watch your next duel if that’s allowed, of course. I want to know how duelling works and might as well take notes on some of the duelling techniques.
How is your easter break Paige and Opeila? Hope you have a great time! Mine is fine, I spent the entire break at Hogwarts. It was not as scary as I thought it would be. Considering how ancient Hogwarts is, I thought it would be full of scary muggle ghosts. The truth is, Hogwarts’ ghosts are pretty nice and cool.

Don't worry Aurora, I'm used to it anyways. And Opeila, yeah that's actually true. Wizards are so smart and everything, but I guess some things they just can't drop. Didn't people write with quills way way way back then? Honestly maybe it makes wizards feel special, so they don't drop it. Either way it's really really annoying. Also, that's a cute gift! Who's Sylvain???
Histry History of magic is nice when I don't hafta read. I like the stories and stuff like that. Dueling seems pretty fun. I agree with Aurora, that would honestly be fun to watch. My break was fine, I stayed at Hogwarts as well with my friend Henry Knight. Aurora I never thought of that. It's SO old, maybe there's some hidden secrets under this school! That would be cool!
Opeila, so you like to jog in the mornings? I usually get my exercise by running and playing basketball, a muggle sport, or just being... me. That's a lot of work.

That is interesting! I share your opinion of potions, Aurora, but I quite enjoy History of Magic. Especially now in second year, Professor Zahid gave us an introduction for runes. I honestly don't know how I am ever going to pick electives next year, I kinda want to do just all of them. And sure you can watch the official matches, it's like Quidditch Games, you can always come and watch.
My holidays have been fine so far, I am also staying in Hogwarts. After what happened last winter, I'm not keen to get on the train so soon again- You two read the Headliner, right? I've been interviewed on that topic. If not, I'd strongly advise you to, it really summarizes all the important events.
Sylvain is a Ravenclaw from my year, a prefect. Aurora, you might know him! And yes, ever since I have come to Hogwarts I feel like I need to strengthen myself, so I like to jog in the mornings. Hogwarts is a great place, but can be physically challenging at times.

Oh! That would be cool to see you do duelling! Does it hurt, though? Is it like the muggle boxing but with magic? If yes, that is quite alarming in my opinion. Also, I don’t think it is much different from quidditch in terms of brutality. I heard they beat each other up with a metal ball.
I did read the headliner article about it. It was rather scary, I am glad you are okay, at least physically. I don’t think I ever talk with anyone named Sylvain despite being a Ravenclaw myself. I do agree though with trying to be stronger. Something did happen in the Ravenclaw tower a while ago, I’m not sure if any of you know about that, but it was a terrible one. I think I have to practice more in spell casting so I could protect myself and the other.
Anyhow, I am wondering, do Hogwarts have a security team?

Yes, does dueling hurt? I can imagine it does when someone gets flipped in the air! When they hit the ground, I mean. Like, isn't the result of that a lot of bruises? Muggle sports don't really cause that many bruises, not unless it's a serious sport. Wait, a metal ball? What the? The bludger? Is that what you mean? It does look really hard, I wince every time someone gets hit with it! I still really want to do quidditch, though. We'll see.
I did read the headliner, you were there? It really scared me, I thought Hogwarts was supposed to be safe! Is it always this dangerous? I'm already nervous. If we're talking about protecting each other, I can't put much in about spells. However, I am pretty strong and therefore can throw many things, including punches and kicks.
Uhh... I think I heard some students saying there was one, three pygmy puffs named Greg
Honestly? You would think not with the way all this stuff happens, but Hogwarts really should! How come no one thought of that! You would think someone would think of that because the place is so accident prone.. I guess that's why we learn spells and everything.
