Getting mail was extremely exciting on any day. Pericles was elated to receive a letter, let alone a book, until the moment he read the sender's name. Smiles turned to surprise and on into cautious confusion. He read the message twice over, tense at the Great Hall's breakfast table. A response was expected with an assigned due date. Peri's answer wasn't sent the same day, nor the following, implying care and effort were at work. His response arrived instead two days later, written on the back of an illustration: certainly not something cut from a book, but what looked to be an antiquated botanical flash card.

Thank you very much for recommending the book. My mother taught me a bit about flower language, but the reason I recognized your Helleborus was because my aunt used to wear them during family functions. One year on my birthday, I was nervous, so she handed it to me instead. I was excited to see someone else wearing it, and didn't mean much aside from the compliment itself. I hope I didn't disrupt your evening with Professor Karr.
