Mom & Dad,

I have finally made it to the school, and its wonderful. Its a shame that they remove the dust so often around here. The place looks so flithy because of it, but as you all say, many formidable witches and wizards have come from Hogwarts so I'll let it slide. The architect is quite nice, however. Reminds me of my favorite bedtime story mother always read to me:

Dracula.

It's very calming. Though some students seem to have already be giving me strange looks. Do you think they feel disappointed by the Ashwoods? We haven't been horrid fiends since great grandmother Ossie was executed in the United States. It must be painful for them knowing the Ashwoods are no longer living as much to their legacy anymore. No matter, I just know that in upcoming years of me becoming a witch, I will remind everyone and everything that an Ashwood will always be something worthy to fear.

P.S. I'm afraid I'm not allowed to be given bones through the mail. Apparently that'll make the other students uncomfortable and avoid using the Owlery any further whenever I am there. Which isn't fair since everyone else gets to be yelled at through their mail constantly. No matter then.

Just mail me toe nails instead.

Vale,

Well, we'll be darned! They really take away the dust? That's the whole part of the atmosphere you need to keep! When you come home for the holidays, don't tell your grandmother. She'll faint if she knew what living conditions they're putting you in.

And no bones either? What happened to that place? To the wizarding world? It didn't use to be this bad now. Suppose things really are going back into dark times. Things just aren't going to be the same anymore.

Vale, when your mother and I were young and rebellious back in the United States, we would take turns dunking into alligator-infested waters after taking some gillyweed and see who last the longest. Turns out it no longer became fun because the alligators would swim away quickly when they spot us.

We'll take you out the next time. Maybe they've forgotten our faces by then!

Anyways, look out for those toe nails in the next letter. They're rather large, so you can't miss them in the envelope.

P.S. Your brother says hello, by the way! Just came back from some sort of meadows out in the East. Apparently the creatures out there aren't so friendly with anyone snatching herbs out there. But where's the fun in it when there's nothing lurking and ready to snatch you inbetween its jaws for a snack every now and again? Keeps the blood pumping! And for an Ashwood, younger!

Mom & Dad,

The other children are learning a lot about my dolls now. Though I think some purposefully avoid them. I wonder why? They're quite kind and sweet. But it seems like nobody else can hear them.

Ashes is the most fond of girls, but nobody but I want to play with him. I even put on a bow to make him look more presentable, but the other girls either run away or tell me I'm getting too old to play with dolls. I guess I'll have to get him a friend at some point.

How is kaka (Swahili word for brother) doing? He didn't even return home to say goodbye to me leaving. How long does grief last for? I still feel bad, but not bad enough that I wouldn't say goodbye.

P.S. Apparently toe nails are now off-limits as well. What is wrong with the things I bring? All the other children have weirder things than me. Don't other children also have bones and toe nails? Or something to figure out in their next letter home?

Those toe nails belong to a crocodile by the way. Is mama making medicine using crocodile again? When can I start helping to make medicine with her?

Vale,

You know your brother would take it the hardest. Grief doesn't work the way we want it to, not even for an Ashwood. The Ashwoods lose a lot of things. Even our own marbles! I think that's a muggle phase, whatever it means.

Just give him some more time. He's older, and have a lot more thinking to do. He's sure to be here when you come home for the break. I'm sure he feels bad about not being there. But you're a growing child, and children growing up are expected to already have their first abili created before the age of twelve. You best get to working on it before they attach you to crimes!

And you guessed correct! Crocodile toe nails are quite sturdy. Too bad there's really nothing to do with them. Prehaps your mother can make you a necklace on your next return home with them. Surely you won't get in trouble for that.

P.S. Your mother sends you love and kisses. She also told me to 'stop sending you bones of any kind through the mail.' Even your own mother! Well, it can not be helped that people just have a bone to pick with us. A curse of the Ashwoods. No matter, we'll make them sorry soon enough!

P.S.S. Your mother checked my letter and found out I was about to send you human nail clippings. I'm not allowed to send you any letters myself now and told me to say this word for word. I still do not understand the perils of bones. Or your mother's affinity with not pushing onwards the Ashwood legacy.
