Risks and Lies

The Hospital Wing definitely went more for sanitary than interesting. Bridget had been amazed by oddities found in many of Hogwarts' rooms, but there was nothing to marvel over here. There were about two dozen plain beds with clean white sheets separated by partitions for privacy. Small tables were located next to each bed and the only lighting came through windows. Other than that, the only furniture was a bench by the door, perhaps for students waiting for their friends to get patched up, and several cabinets filled with neatly organized potions and medicines.
It was in this room, rather like a Muggle hospital except the lack of high-tech equipment, that Bridget found herself in. To her left was Thora Larkston, with a swollen ankle and beat-up appearance--scrapes, tangled hair, minorly tattered clothing--that Bridget realized had to look pretty similar to her own condition, minus the potentially broken ankle.
The small brunette tried her best to keep a calm, serious, somewhat innocent expression on her face. She had plenty of practice holding an emotionless guise, but this time she'd have to actually look concerned, which honestly wasn't that hard. For one, she was legitimately worried about her housemate and also, she was fretful, because if the nurse didn't buy their story, they could get into trouble.
For the most part, the infirmary mirrored the halls: vacant except for the occasional person not celebrating the end of exams, or, in this case, unable to. One student, a few years older with curly blonde hair, was snoring off to their right, while a Ravenclaw girl she recognized from classes was doing the worst possible thing: staring right at them. A shiver went down Bridget's spine. She could feel those blue eyes boring into her suspiciously and the eagle would be another person she'd have to not only lie to but convince of her story.
The nurse clip-clopped across the floor, gave them a one-over, and asked, straight to the point, "What happened?"
The first year's own nails dug into her flesh, a way of releasing all the nervous energy. Lying to help Thora out was the only fair option. After all, Bridget owed her--the redhead had already saved her from missing Astronomy and basically risked her life for her sketchbook.
And so she began. She fed the nurse and the Ravenclaw stalker their tale of how they'd been outside comparing drawings, of how they hadn't been looking where they were going and veered off the path straight into some rose bushes with thorns. Then, she relayed how Thora had supposedly stumbled in a small depression in the earth and hurt her ankle and that they weren't sure if it was broken. The whole time, her hazel eyes wanted to remain locked on the nurse's golden ones, but she forced herself, as casually as possible, to examine the lace designs on her white apron and to glance at Thora, eyebrows knit, when she mentioned the ankle. It was odd really, how she rarely made eye contact in a normal conversation but had to force herself to look away when lying. Perhaps it was because she was trying to look less suspicious, but whatever the reason, she did her best to mask her tell, regardless of the fact no one would notice unless they'd conversed normally with her in the past.
Now was the moment of truth, which was ironic because Bridget had just fibbed. The nurse seemed to buy it, gesturing them over to an empty bed. The brunette, heaving a sigh of relief, helped her comrade limp over.
"I'm going to fix this ankle first and after we can deal with the damage the thorns did," the nurse explained, wasting no time in fishing items out of the cabinets.
"I'm going to retrieve over stuff that we left on the Grounds, then," Bridget said. To Thora she added, "I'll be right back," and with that she turned to leave the room.

Risks and Lies
Thora blushed as she limped into the Hospital Wing at Bridget's side. The deep cherry-red color of her cheeks deepened as the brunette explained their made-up story to the nurse. On a regular basis, Thora hated lying, but she absolutely did not want detention. Besides, it wasn't like the two were doing it for fun--Thora was trying to help.
As the kindly nurse accepted, however skeptically, their story, the redhead did her best to struggle over to a new bed. Sitting down heavily on the new, white sheets with help from her fellow first year, she glanced up at Bridget. "Thanks for everything," she whispered. Although Thora had simply been trying to help the other girl out of kindness when a kneazle stole her sketchbook, Bridget didn't have to repay her with all of this. Plenty of people she had met at Muggle school would have been perfectly content leaving Thora outside to suffer on her own.
Maybe this was showing her that Bridget was a true friend, that she actually did care for Thora. The bighearted redhead knew if something had happened to Bridget under her watch, there was no doubt she would lie for both of them and cover up their little adventure.
"I'm going to retrieve our stuff that we left on the Grounds, then, I'll be right back," Bridget told her. "Okay," Thora answered as her fellow first year left the room. The plump nurse bustled back to the bed with vials and bandages, her golden eyes sparkling in sympathy. She examined Thora's ankle, tutting under her tongue. "Hmm--- it doesn't seem to be broken, but it's a pretty bad sprain." Straightening, the nurse pulled out her wand, "Episkey," she incanted, followed by, "Ferula." The redhead's eyes widened in disbelief. It was evident she was Muggleborn--she had forgotten the nurse could simply use magic to fix her wounds. "You'll be hobbling around for a few days, but you should be fine," the nurse said with a smile. "Tha--thank you so much," Thora thanked the nurse as the kindly old lady continued to cast Episkey on her various scratches.
Finally, the nurse stood up and began to walk away from Thora's bedside, leaving her with a vial of Healing Potion she was to take to regenerate some strength. Downing the strange, bright red potion, Thora took her first good look at the Hospital Wing. The clean atmosphere and main whitish color made the room much like any other hospital she would've seen in the Muggle world, save the various vials dotting the room. And then the girl caught her eye. A Ravenclaw across the room was sitting, nonchalantly following her every move. Thora shivered and settled into her blankets, waiting for Bridget to come back. And to the first year's relief, the creepy Ravenclaw finally looked away.

Risks and Lies
Bridget did feel kind of bad for leaving Thora with the nurse. For one, it was awkward, and also, if the witch was still suspicious of their story and started asking questions... well, it wouldn't be good.
As she passed, the Ravenclaw girl narrowed her eyes. Bridget was starting to resent the other first year, with her carefully braided black-brown hair and cobalt eyes. Seriously, had no one ever told her to mind her own business? Finally, the eagle brought out a book. Something about espionage.
Stepping back into he corridor, the small girl was positive the gravity was twice as strong in the infirmary. The pressure of lying melted away and Bridget found herself, whether it was allowed or not, running through the halls, eager to put as much distance between her and the Hospital Wing as possible, if only for a few minutes. Their stuff was exactly where they'd left it on the lawn by the water's edge. Tucking her sketchbook safely into her satchel, she slung both bags over her shoulders and headed back at a walk.
Thora wore no expression of panic when she returned, so Bridget was sure their secret was still safe. The redhead's scratches had disappeared and her ankle was wrapped in bandages. The nurse waved the brunette over, vanished her bruises and cuts with a cast of Episkey, and released them to celebrate the conclusion of exams after reminding Thora to take it easy for a few days. The pair exited, relieved. Finding a deserted corridor a few turns later, Bridget stopped.
"She didn't figure anything out, did she? The nurse, while I was gone. And is your ankle good now?"

Risks and Lies
Thora quickly strode alongside Bridget as the pair left the Hospital Wing. The brunette breathlessly asked her whether the nurse had discovered their secret and asked if her ankle was okay. Thankfully, the nurse had not suspected them at all. "She didn't find out anything, don't worry," the redhead assured the other girl. "I mean, I didn't really say anything, anyways," she blushed.
The sneks made their way down the twisting, tortuous path provided by the moving staircases. Honestly, Thora didn't care. The threat of the moment was over, and honestly, the girl was just glad to have her ankle taken care of and out of the Hospital Wing before their guilty consciences could catch up with them. Of course, she couldn't speak for Bridget, but she certainly didn't have any plans for the rest of the day. It was almost laughable, following the series of hard exams, but the first years had finished all their tests and were completely homework-less.
Ideas in her head competing in her head, Thora wondered what she should say. Bridget really was a kind girl and a really amazing possible friend, even willing to take the blame for both girls in their little adventure. She would love to become friends with her... "Uh--I think Professor Jensen posted a parchment about summer errands? Would you be available in, say, later this month sometime? Maybe we could do an errand together," the words fell out of her mouth before she could stop them. "Anyways," she tried to continue, "I-I'm heading to the library, maybe find a good book or two," she smiled, "Maybe you can come? A-anyways, I'll be there," Thora trailed off, blushing. Hopefully Bridget didn't think she was the weirdest girl on the planet... Well, at least the invitation was there. Now it was just up to Bridget.
