"Wrong..."

"Close..."

"Bingo..."

Sifting through one homework assignment after another was challenging for Maya. While she enjoyed the correct answers from fellow muggle-born students, she strived to see some change from half-blood or even more-so, pure-bloods. But it seemed that it was only a small handful that took Muggle Studies seriously. She could see the switch to understanding from some pure-blood status students.

"OUCH!"

As she was sifting through the homework parchments, one had caught her skin and given her a papercut. While visually small, the pain was excruciating. She looked at her finger and could not see the cut, but she knew that a bandaid was in order.

Maya got up from her desk and went to her little first aid kid located on the bottom shelf of her bookshelf. She opened the box and moved wraps, alcohol pads and other first aid supplies. There were no Band-Aids. Sighing, she closed the box and took it with her out of her classroom. She was heading towards the Hospital Wing.

There was some humor to Maya having a first aid kit in her room. She lived in a world of magic. There were many potions and spells that could heal her problem. The question was why? Why was she so adamant on using muggle products? Other than being muggle-born, she made a promise to her closest mentor. She was to never forget her muggle roots. And it can definitely be easy to forget. Magic can do everything while the muggle society was limited.

Her finger still soaring with hidden pain, she went up two flights of stairs from the first floor to the third. Luckily, they did not move mid-climb. When she entered the Hospital Wing, it seemed quiet. That's a first, she thought, remembering how it was always filled with students because of everything that happened the past year. Thankfully this upcoming year was a bit more quiet itself.

"Hello?" she called out, not seeing anyone when she walked in. Maya looked around and then saw a desk with someone sitting by it. A new face. Of course. There was always someone new at the Hospital Wing. "Hi-- This might sound silly to you, but I'm in need of Band-Aids. They are plastic or thread-like stickers with gauze in the middle. Do you have any laying around?" she asked, assuming that the person in front of her did not know what Band-Aids were. Typically, most magical folk don't.

The dust had settled, or more like, it hadn't even had the chance to get kicked up yet. Kels had no idea what kind of traffic to expect, though he had heard a great deal of talk about how dangerous the school was. One of his old co-workers straight up told him the job wasn't worth it. This alleged field hospital on the frontlines of child warfare was occupied by two snoozing patients, and there was actually very little to do.

He had already put everything away just how he liked it, made inventory lists and delegated tasks and roles to the staff. Besides some file sorting, there was a dragging feeling in the air of it just being dead at the moment. He hated moments like that, if something interesting didn't happen he was going to be the dead one.

Luckily enough, a lady walked in, just taking a moment to find herself to the desk. He was sure he remembered her from staff stuff when he was first introduced to the team, but he didn't remember if they ever said what she did. It had been kind of rushed anyway, they seemed to be having trouble filling the position. He remembered the name though-- Maya. He never met anyone named Maya before, so it stuck out. It reminded him of Maya the Bee-- and old cartoon he used to like with a really catchy theme song. Oh... oh yeah, it was stuck in his head now.

"Hiya, Maya." He smiled, glad to have someone to talk to at last.

His eyes would widen as she described her query however, making sure to ever-so-delicately explain what a band-aid was to him. When she was done, he laughed, heartily and high pitched.

"Eeeeyeah, I got that." His following smile might have looked snarky, but his eyes showed childish amusement. He pointed to the first aid kit by her side, snapping with his free fingers. "Gimmie that, I'll get you a load of crap. Stock you up like a super market."

Whether she forked it over or not, Kels would kick off the floor so his wheely chair would squeak over to one of the cabinets behind him, opening it up while still seated.

"I keep my muggle stuff here. You never know, y'know?" Sifting through it, he pulled out a box of plasters that was, perhaps ironically, not the Band-Aid brand. "What's your excuse, yer wand get broke?"

The voice that came out of the grown man was not one that Maya expected. He sounded like a young teenager with the slurs of his words and the laziness of his enunciation. He laughed at her after she explained what a Band-Aid was. She was confused at why he would laugh and not go and look for such a supply in his cabinet.

"Do you really got that?" she replied back, her eyes raised up high. Did he really know what she was talking about or was he just pretending?

Maya handed over her first aid kit to the nurse after he snapped his fingers for it. "I don't need a load of crap, I need Band-Aids," she said again, and she began to follow him to wherever he was going.

When he began to talk about where he kept his muggle stuff, a smile couldn't help but be painted upon her face. He did have knowledge of muggle supplies and products.

Maya crossed her arms and leaned to one side. "Listen, the last nurse did not know what I was talking about, so I just assumed...," Maya explained, her Israeli accent thick. The last thing she wanted to do was to assume the blood status of the man in front of her.

It was then she realized that her arms felt colder than usual. She looked down and saw that she was not wearing her signature red cloak. Instead, she was in all black. She was wearing black pants with a black turtleneck top. It was a usual outfit she would wear within the cloak. Something simple. In a way, she felt naked without her cloak. Although feeling a bit different, she did not make note of it. All she wanted were Band-Aids.

Nestling the box into her kit, he saw there was clearly room for more 'crap' despite her opinion otherwise. "Reeeally?" His voice squeaked. "You don't want no Neosporin? Ibuprofen? I got stuff fer heartburn an' allergies too. Used to carry thisstuff around everywhere when I was a kid."

As she stood near him, she would be able to see his treasure trove. A load of compartments that was stocked to the brim with muggle medication. All over-the-counter, since he had not gone through Muggle doctor school yet. Still, it would make a housewife's bathroom cabinet weep. He regretfully knew that most of them were going to eventually expire under disuse. There wasn't a single thing there that didn't have a spell that would work far quicker and more reliably. There were muggle born students though. He knew he had hated it when he first came to Hogwarts, and the nurses did weird things he didn't recognize. Sometimes, a reminder of home was part of the treatment.

"My mum used to have a cure fer everythin', though sometimes she had some totally wacked out ideas like syrup of ipecac fer a poison victim. Like, use a bezoar my guy, am I right? " He would hand her the kit back, filled to the brim if she accepted his other crap, but laden with brand new band-aids if she didn't. "She were a muggle healer soz..."

He looked like he might have been deep in thought, perhaps fondly remembering his mother, when he snapped back to attention.

"You got somethin' needs a band-aid? You hurt?"

This nurse had everything from pain relievers to muggle flu symptom remedies. These products were surely not stocked prior to his arrival. It was pure nostalgia to see brands that she grew up with (even if it was in a different language). Maya peered over the nurse to see more of his product.

"Fine... All of it," she said, with a small smile. To have all of these supplies had to be that he was a Muggle-Born. There was no way he was Half-Blood and definitely no sure in hell that he was a Pure-Blood. The question was boiling inside but she did not want to outright ask his status. It wasn't appropriate.

Perhaps it was just her, but hearing someone who had a strong muggle background speak like magic was almighty did not settle with her. Maya grew up as a muggle and will never forget that she comes from muggles. She would never settle on a "bezoar" the way he described. At least not right away. She would do everything she could muggle-wise first. Her arms still crossed across her abdomen, Maya began to play with her fingers and nails using her thumb. She winced when her thumb hit the small paper cut.

"Sometimes magic isn't the answer," she retorted while stepping back from the supplies. She looked at the nurse with her brown, beady eyes. "Magic shares more unexpected consequence. It's better to care for others manually."

It seemed like medicine did not fall far from the tree. Like mother, like son. Maya contemplated what it would be like if she followed the footsteps of her mother. She would be a housewife who sits at home, popping out babies and caring for the home. Definitely not a lifestyle for her.

Maya nodded at his question about needing a Band-Aid. She took out her hand from being crossed towards his direction. "I was grading homework and I got a papercut. I didn't have a Band-Aid for it," she said, now pointing at the smallest cut. It was practically invisible, but Maya knew it was there.

He was glad that someone was going to use his stuff, he beamed at her with his gap-tooth grin, feeling proud of the plump, hard-to-shut kit he was handing over. There was a treatment for all common discomforts, he wasn't kidding about carrying around a satchel of medicine growing up. Through the years he learned what the most frequently asked for quick fixes were.

She didn't agree with his thoughts on magical healing, though she was the first person in his life to hold that opinion. How fascinating!

"I can tell you haven't ever imbibed no syrup of ipecac before..." He expressed the haunting memory with an over-the-top disgusted expression, sticking his tongue out. "Maybe so, tho. Yeah, like, maybe you're right about somea the more risky stuff. Issnot just one way or th'other. Better to understand both, insteada pickin' a side."

Revealing her devestating injury, Kels reacted with the appropriate amount of dramaticism, gasping. "A papercut!" Everyone knew the toil of the painful paper cut, it was almost as bad as a hangnail.

"There's a sink right over 'ere, be sure you wash it first. Antibiotic cream, band-aid... iss still gonna be stingin' for another day at least, maybe more. Ooooorrrr..." Kels pulled out his wand from seemingly nowhere, waggling his eyebrows enthusiastically. "Or I could make all the pain go away in a split second. Huuuh?"

It was rare to know someone who wanted to see both sides. In this world they lived in, it was definitely one-sided. It was the reason the Daily Prophet and other forms of magical media have been dealing with the political motion of equality by all blood status'. Most who are magic and have lived in the magical realm would only abide by their experience and not take into consideration those who lived differently.

But not the nurse in front of Maya. No. He wanted to understand both sides. It was very unlikely that he was of Pure-Blood status. The way he spoke about muggle medicine though, she was also eliminating the prospect of him being Half-blood as well. It seemed all too "muggle" for her.

The way he handled her sharing of a papercut couldn't help but make Maya laugh. She listened to his instructions and went to the nearest sink to wash her hands with soap and water. As she was lathering up the white, foamy soap between her fingers, she realized that she had not laughed like that in a very long time. Although the laugh was short, it felt as though it healed her soul for a split second.

Drying her hands, ignoring the discomfort of the towel caressing over her cut, she made her way back to the nurse with a smile. "I'll take my chances with the pain," she said putting her hand back out towards him, hoping he would be so inclined to put the cream and Band-Aid on.

"I'm not sure if you know, but the Hospital Wing is one of the most popular rooms of the school," she half-heartedly joked. It was her best attempt of small talk.

As she went for the sink, he knew the choice had been made. It seemed Maya was pretty steadfast, not easily swayed by convenience. A rare trait, really, a good number of people liked to automatically pick the easier option. Especially wizards, as she pointed out. Sometimes it made more sense to do things manually, show more individual effort through muscle and blood. Not that Kels agreed for this occasion, a healing spell by him wasn't going to fail, though perhaps he would have to earn that trust... if it was even possible.

Still, he wasn't going to insist. It wasn't some life or death situation where he had to use some healer authority... not that he had much, patients had a lot more power over him, really. He was mostly a tool, a function of the school. While he did his job, he would make himself comfortable, turn the hospital wing into a home away from home... make everyone feel comfortable. It seemed to him like there was a undercurrent of dread courses through the nervous system of the school. He could feel it... everyone needed to relax.

He tucked his wand behind his ears as she returned, putting her hand out for the nurse to do his job. Sitting up with a loud creak of his chair, he squeezed out a tiny dab of the cream on the wound, using the gauze-y part of the plaster to smooth it out. Wrapped taut, but not suffocating. There was an art to bandage wrapping, his full-body bandage work was beyond compare. He had an intense eye for detail, and he was insistent on constantly improving. If it was an act he did often, he perfected it. It was a useful habit in his field.

"There she is, a old fashioned paper cut treatment. It's primary school all over again." He grinned proudly even though literally anyone could have done a similarly apt job. Being proud of himself despite that was part of the secret to his indomitable happiness.

To her continued chat, he looked out beyond her in disbelief. He searched around animatedly, his hand on his brow like a skilled hunter.

"Oh yeah, super popular. So hard to treat them after I gave them all that invisibility potion." If his jovial, mocking voice didn't give away his sarcasm, likely his zealously smug expression would. After he laughed at his own joke, his childish expressions simmered. "I was told it would be hectic. I'm still waiting for the tsunami to hit."

There was a sense of personal pride watching the nurse take care of her papercut muggle-style. There was no need for wands, magic and the like. Sure, Maya was to feel the sting for the next few hours, but it was worth it to remind herself she was still human than to ignore that fact. She was still interested to know his background and how he was well-knowledgeable in the muggle department of things. Perhaps she would share her background as a way to peer into his.

"I was taught at a young age to never turn your back on who you really are," she started. "As a muggle-born, I pride in looking forward with two cultures in my pocket," she finished.

Maya took back her hand once it was finished being tended to. She looked at her finger and saw to her surprise that it was wrapped professionally well. It wasn't one of those Band-Aid wraps that you can find in a local drug store. It was as if he was a paramedic in the muggle world and had cared for a wound. She smiled as a thank you to the nurse.

"We are, at the moment, fortunate," Maya said matter-of-factly, at his banter back. She looked around the room, finding it peaceful for once. The room was always filled with students injured one way or another: unexpected fires, giants infiltrating the castle, Hags doing their worst to the students, and more. The fact that it was quiet was quite unheard of. The nurse was lucky to have a breather.

"And what then when the tsunami will hit? You'll take excitement over the students' misery because you have something to do?" Maya questioned him, her shapely brown and thin eyebrows raising. It wasn't a secret that he was bored. She had many moments of being in her office during 'office hours' where no student walked in. While she had to be in her classroom, she had no way to leave and found it excruciatingly boring to just sit there during the hour or more.

Maya clued him in on some of her perspective, it seemed she was quite an earnest and genuine person as well. That was good, Kels always got along well with those kinds of people. Pride was the word she associated with it... an interesting choice. It wasn't like he hadn't ever felt the pressure to 'forget' his muggle qualities. Even Maya herself didn't assume he knew anything about muggles, it was commonly left for granted that most wizards didn't regard muggle life with much of any respect or interest. He could see why that might make someone want to hold on to what people were trying to take away.

Frankly, he had never considered being proud of being a muggle. It wasn't that he regretted it, in fact, he had plenty of reason to be perfectly happy with his childhood. To him, being a part of both worlds had felt like a huge benefit. More knowledge, more options, more material to build off of and break boundaries with. Just as much as he loved his muggle mother's healing, he loved magical healing as well. Not everyone got that kind of well-rounded education.

"Never turn your back on who you are... I can jive with that." Kels nodded along. "I were muggle-born too, though I don't remember my parents. Jus' my mum what adopted me."

After she noted the relative tranquility of the wing, she asked about the inevitable disruption of it. Kels itched his nose, grunting as he leaned back into his chair, spinning it a bit back and forth as he thought. He was grinning as he looked at her, seeing that she clearly picked up on his restlessness.

"That's what ya get for being a healer. People are happiest what ya aren't needed." Kels scrunched his nose, his grin becoming wry. "Can't say I like seeing people in pain, but I do like bein' useful. Don't feel very useful sittin' around readin' books."

Kels tapped his chin with his forefinger thoughtfully, if not cartoonishly.

"Or I'll just go back to runnin' experiments. Never know what kinda tweaks will make a potion better. Been lookin' inta different typesa mortars. Wood, marble, stone, iron..." Kels mused on, seeming to drift off back to his own thoughts.
