[font=Book Antiqua]Thora flung open the doors of Hogwarts, stepping outside to be welcomed by glorious sunshine. Living in Dublin, Ireland, the girl had developed a love for the sun. After all, the Irish rarely saw it in the summer, let alone another times of the year. It being the end of the school year, the redhead gazed around the sprawling grounds she had grown to love, just as she had early in September. The huge Great Lake, with its dark depths, to the seven tidy greenhouses that marked the Herbology classroom. Of course, there was Hogwarts Castle itself, which stood behind her in all of its huge glory. And then there was the Whomping Willow, which Thora glanced at quickly, grimacing. Earlier in the month, she had run headlong into it helping Bridget Collins retrieve her sketchbook...

Shaking her head as if to clear it, the redhead drew herself out of her reverie. Watering can clutched in gloved hands, Thora made her way over to a patch of plants near the Herbology greenhouses. The girl had heard from her own Head of House about summer errands, and was more than happy to complete one, as the redhead was eager to earn some extra money.

Plopping down on the soft, green grass cultivated by the sheets of rain the Scottish island received, Thora set down a few things she had received as to help her with the errand. Glancing through the Muggle tools that were so familiar in front of her, the Slytherin realized she had forgotten a shovel. Facepalming, Thora groaned, hoping that Bridget--the girl she had been assigned to work with--had brought one.

Earlier that June, she had met Bridget on a couple occasions, the last of which the brunette had asked whether Thora would like to complete an errand with her. The redhead answered with enthusiasm, of course, not about to turn away an opportunity for a friend. After all, you did have to cultivate a friendship for it to grow.

Bridget stepped out onto the Hogwarts Grounds and instantly had to shield her eyes. The sun was blindingly bright and the temperature was quite sweltering. Luckily, having learned her lesson after completing her last errand, Bridget was wearing a shirt that covered her shoulders and a baseball cap to shield her face. She had no desire to be sunburned any worse than she already was.

Her face lit up as she caught sight of the short redhead she would be working with and she quickened her pace. Although they hadn't known each other for long, Thora was by far her favorite person at Hogwarts. She was scared to get her hopes up, but maybe the girl would become her friend if they spent more time together. That was why she had asked Thora to complete this errand with her, after all.

Today they would be gardening, which she was fine with. True, she didn't like Herbology as she wasn't exactly a green thumb, but she did love nature, so being outside was good enough. Her hands were encased in protective gloves and she carried a small shovel, an empty watering can, pruning shears, and attached to her belt was a small sack of tulip bulbs. Oh, and of course she had her wand. The errands proved to be an excellent occasion to put spells to practical use.

"Hi Thora!" she said, a smile emerging. Thora might not know it, but she was one of the few people that had earned a genuine smile. Usually she either forced a grin or kept a straight face.

Her gaze followed the other girl's, landing on the Whomping Willow. She had mixed feelings about the tree--apprehension of its danger, anger of it hurting Thora, curiosity due to the tunnel underneath, and confusion of whether it had helped or hurt their budding friendship.

"Are you ready to start?" she asked, examining the tools Thora had brought. Between the two of them, they should be amply prepared for gardening.

[font=Book Antiqua]Perched on the grass, Thora continued to gaze towards the twisted branches of the Whomping Willow, until she heard a voice pipe up behind her. "Hi Thora!" Turning, Thora's face lit up as she saw Bridget Collins, a brunette Slytherin in her year. "Hi Bridget," the redhead responded brightly. Thank goodness she had been partnered with someone she knew. She had only met up with Bridget a few times, quite recently, and she seemed like a very nice girl. If only they could be friends... "Are you ready to start?" the brunette asked.

"Yeah," Thora eagerly replied. To be honest, the girl had dragged her feet, coming out on the errand. She had only done it for the extra money--being a Muggleborn, wizarding currency was pretty hard to get, so she always jumped at a chance to earn some. But being partnered with Bridget, probably the student she was the most comfortable with, was a plus. "Oh good," Thora said, mostly to herself. "I mean, good thing you brought a shovel, because I forgot mine," she continued awkwardly.

Noticing that Bridget had a cloth bag of what looked like bulbs hanging off her belt, Thora decided they had better plant first, for a lack of other things to do. Should she initiate? It was strange making decisions, because the redhead always followed rules and, besides, what would Bridget think? "Um, let's go to the patch of dirt over there," the redhead gestured to an area just to their right, hands full of dull, used gardening tools.

It was weird initiating conversation, but at least she was better at it--at least compared to their first meeting earlier in the month. Both the girls had stuttered and struggled over their short conversation. Pulling herself back to the current situation, Thora glanced at Bridget. Should she wait? Should she go ahead?

"Sounds good," Bridget replied to Thora's suggestion that they start with planting. She made her way over to the section Thora had pointed out--a patch of brown soil that, despite the hot summer weather, wasn't completely scorched. She crouched down and got to work right away, digging holes in the ground with her shovel and popping the bulbs in. Her hands were sweating like crazy inside the protective gear, so she shed the gloves, deciding she would only use them if her hands actually needed protecting. For now, she had no problem getting dirty so long as she wasn't unnecessarily warm.

She tasked Thora with filling the watering can up in the lake so they could make the soil a bit more plant-growing friendly. Once she got back, she decided to strike up a conversation. The silence was okay, but she really did want to know more about Thora and at the moment, talking seemed to be the best way to do that.

"I did some research in the Library," she began. This was hardly out of the ordinary. Even if one wasn't studious and knowledge-thirsty, she doubted anyone could avoid perusing the library if they were transported to a whole new world with different rules and histories.

"That cat thing that stole my sketchbook... that wasn't actually a cat. It was this thing called a kneazle--basically the wizarding world's version of a cat. It isn't necessarily magical, but it is very intelligent and can apparently detect untrustworthy people."

Bridget really hated that last part about 'untrustworthy people'. Had it been drawn to them because they were untrustworthy? She doubted she would be disloyal unless someone betrayed her first... so did that mean Thora wasn't safe to trust? She shoved the thoughts away--no, she didn't want to think that of the one person that could be her friend here. Bridget returned to planting the tulip bulbs. The mindless work gave her plenty of time to think--had anything Thora done so far been off? She didn't think so, but she had trust issues and she simply couldn't be too sure.

[font=Book Antiqua]Thora breathed a silent sigh of relief as Bridget answered her question, "Sounds good." The redhead hurried after her fellow first year as she walked over to the patch of dirt that Thora had earlier gestured to. The brunette feverishly dug with her shovel, carefully planting the small bulbs and covering them up. Awkwardly, Thora stood by.

"Um, should I--" the redhead started. Not having a shovel, the Slytherin was unsure whether she should offer to help or do something else... Thankfully, she was saved as Bridget glanced up at her and asked her to fill the watering can to give the thirsty, dry soil. "Sure," Thora replied with a smile. Grabbing the bright yellow watering can from the grass she had set it on and jogged over to the Great Lake--thankfully not too far away. Dipping the metal can underneath the cool, clear water, Thora lifted it out as soon as water reached the brim.

Walking over as fast as she could, the redhead crouched by Bridget and set the watering can in between the two of them. Suddenly, the brunette spoke up. "I did some research in the Library," she began. At this, Thora smiled--sounded like exactly something the redhead would do herself--the library was often the best place to find the knowledge-thirsty girl. "That cat thing that stole my sketchbook... that wasn't actually a cat. It was this thing called a kneazle--basically the wizarding world's version of a cat. It isn't necessarily magical, but it is very intelligent and can apparently detect untrustworthy people." At this, Thora frowned slightly, cocking her head to the side. Was Bridget trying to get at something? She hoped not--Bridget seemed like a nice girl and Thora would've loved to become her friend--wished for it, actually.

As Bridget continued to plant the colorless bulbs, Thora turned to her. What was the best way to respond? "Really? I didn't know that," she started weakly. "Maybe I could also do some research..." the redhead was inwardly hitting herself. Here you go again... she thought. Bracing herself, she plowed on. "What do you think? I mean, I haven't studied--what do you call them? Kneazles? So I don't really know..." Of course, the redhead couldn't be too sure--she had just met Bridget--but she decided to make her final point. "I mean--I don't think either of us are trustworthy..."

Straightening, Thora stretched her back. "Can I help you with that?" she asked, a small smile replastering itself on her face. This conversation was, without a doubt, awkward, but at the least, she could still try to become friends with Bridget.

"I mean--I don't think either of us are untrustworthy..." Thora finished after blundering over what she was trying to say. Bridget didn't think she was lying and looking back, couldn't see anything Thora had done that was suspicious. True, she was awkward and introverted, but Bridget was too. Bridget decided to drop the topic. She already had enough issues with trusting people as it was and she certainly didn't need to think some random kneazle had found Thora untrustworthy without proof.

In response to Thora asking how she could help, Bridget had her fill in dirt over the bulbs and water them. Soon enough they were done and she momentarily closed her eyes, picturing the mass of red and pink and purple tulips that would cluster in that patch of dirt next year.

They'd finished planting the tulips so she figured now would be a good time to do some gardening. "Let's make our way over to that garden," Bridget decided, pointing out the destination. Once there, the snakes got to work pulling weeds out of the garden beds and harvesting vegetables--carrots, tomatoes, peas, lettuce, and the like. Once again the pair were silent, the warm breeze carrying sounds of laughter from somewhere else in the Grounds.

"Are you excited to be going home?" Bridget asked. She surely was. The first year missed her family a lot--her dad with his corny jokes, her mom's warm smile, the twins with their pranks and liveliness, and most of all, her older brother Matthew. He'd always been close to her and he was the first person she wanted to share all the novelty of this new world with. Thanks to Thora, she would be able to show him the drawings in her sketchbook so he could see how fascinating Hogwarts was. He would have plenty to say too, as he had attended his first year of college this year. All in all, she couldn't wait these last two days to catch the train and see not only her family, but her best friends Lizzy and Jemima as well.

"Do you miss your family? I certainly do," she added, telling the other girl all about her family and two best friends. It was the sort of thing she usually kept to herself, but for once she wasn't worried about this information being used against her. If anything, this was the sort of thing that would help along their friendship.

[font=Book Antiqua]Finishing up piling up dirt over the newly planted tulip bulbs, Thora took the yellow watering can and watered the dried-out, thirsty dirt. "Let's make our way over to that garden," Bridget suggested.

Thora followed the brunette over to a small garden, where they set out picking fresh vegetables. Finding her bucket, which was one thing the redhead had thankfully brought, she pulled carrots out of the ground by the leaves, and, brushing off the dirt, set them into her blue bucket. Once finished with those, she walked over next to Bridget and began pulling peas off their stems.

"Are you excited to be going home?" Bridget asked, interrupting the comfortable silence. "Huh? Oh, yeah," Thora answered. Drifting off into her own thoughts, she imagined the barn, the farmhouse, her family, her little sister. Being at boarding school for an entire week had been tough for the young girl, not having left home before. Of course, learning about magic and being inside Hogwarts Castle itself made up for it, but nothing beat the Irish family's small home.

She couldn't wait to see her dad again, to hear her younger sister's laughter, even to sit through her mother's scolding.  Anything to be back home. "Do you miss your family? I certainly do," Bridget went on to describe her family and her two close friends. Thora was grateful that the other Slytherin seemed to trust her--at least enough to share something so personal.

Awkward silence settled over the pair as the brunette finished her descriptions. Thora fidgeted uncomfortably. I ought to do it too... the redhead thought. After all, it wasn't exactly fair to Bridget if she just clammed up. It would also put a huge kink in their friendship--something the girl absolutely did not want.

"I really miss home too," the auburn-haired girl began. "My dad is really funny, and I--I really love him..." she grimaced--this was getting awkward fast. "Anyways, I can't wait to see him again. My mom... scolds me a lot," Thora smiled at this, "but she's nice too, and I can't wait to see my little sister. Her name's Elizabeth but I call her Beth. She's really... crazy and she's probably my best friend. Basically, I can't wait to go home." Thora really thought she should stop talking at this point, but she couldn't help it--the words seemed to kind of pour out of her mouth in a never-ending stream. Before she knew it, she was sharing things only her dad knew.

"I--I don't have friends at school," the redhead admitted softly. "Well, my school is tiny, and it's faraway, so I don't really see anyone else other than my family for most of the day. Everyone kind of formed their own groups while I remained a loner. Most of the people who actually talk to me are bullies." Now, listening to herself talk, Thora cringed. She sounded like she was complaining, but it felt good to get everything out of her system... Hopefully Bridget wouldn't judge her for this--

Finding her watering can nearby, she sprinkled the remaining water on the plants that the two girls had already harvested. Good soil meant another good crop next year--something the redhead knew from experience, having lived on a farm her entire life.

Bridget was glad that Thora shared about her family too. If the other snake had told her such personal information, she couldn’t possibly be planning to use what Bridget had said as leverage.

The girls continued to tend to the garden. One section had an especially thick shroud of weeds, making Bridget wonder when the row had last been tended to. Thora’s bucket was quickly filling with produce—perhaps there would be a nice vegetable soup in their future.

Bridget couldn’t help but steal glances at Thora's eyes. She had never really paid them any attention before, but now she was wondering how she hadn't noticed. The irises were a beautiful pale grey-green and maddeningly familiar. She was sure she'd seen them somewhere else before...

"Your eyes are a really pretty color. That pale greyish-green is my favorite color. It reminds me of the sea." Her comment was quickly spiraling into awkwardness. Then, saving them from more weirdness, she remembered where she recognized those eyes from. The fact she hadn't realized it before made her want to kick herself.

"My grandpa has the same color eyes," she added. Now that she was sharing things, she figured she might as well continue. Sure, she wasn't ready to tell Thora about being bullied and outcast, but she could at least discuss the good things.

"He's my favorite person in the whole world. Ever since my grandma died, I don't get to see him a lot--usually four or five times each year. This year, what with being at Hogwarts, I'll only get to see him twice. He lives in Northern Scotland--a small town called Rhue just north of Ullapool--he's really far away from most people. Anyways, he's the one person I'm totally comfortable around. Maybe you having the same eyes is good luck."

When at long last, all of the soil had received water, Thora set her watering can aside and began pulling weeds, following the other Slytherin's example. "Your eyes are a really pretty color. That pale greyish-green is my favorite color. It reminds me of the sea." Bridget started. The redhead blushed--she knew it was a compliment but didn't know what to say. "Um--thanks," she stammered. Hopefully Bridget would understand it wasn't that she didn't appreciate the comment, it was just.... awkward...

"My grandpa has the same color eyes," the brunette continued.

The redhead had to take a moment to process all this information, not missing the part about her eye color being "good luck". Perhaps Bridget was hinting at herself possibly becoming comfortable with Thora? The first year pushed the thought out of her head for the moment, not daring to hope so yet. Thora was also glad that the other girl had been willing to continue sharing more personal information after the redhead had shared her own. It made Thora feel more comfortable with sharing about herself with the brown-haired girl.

"Oh, maybe, that's cool..." Thora said, "My grandpa's awesome too. He looks like my sister--brown hair and blue eyes. He lives in Scotland too, but I'm not exactly sure where--it's kind of in the middle of nowhere too." the redhead blushed at this. "My family lives in Ireland--" she trailed off, going back to picking her weeds.

About thirty sweaty, backbreaking minutes later, Thora looked up. A tired smile on her face, she turned to Bridget. "I think we're about done here." she told her, surveying their work. Apparently two hours of work was quite a bit--they had harvested two buckets of vegetables and weeded the entire garden.

Cheeks a rosy red, Thora picked up her tools and turned away. It was a pity the pair had finished already--someone like Bridget could be the perfect friend. Well, apparently this wasn't the opportunity... Swiveling back to face the brunette, Thora asked, "Do you want to meet up again somewhere? If we don't see each other before the end of the school year, we can try to owl or something." The redhead really wanted to know more about Bridget--hopefully the other girl felt the same way.

Skipping away, vegetable-laden bucket in tow, Thora felt confident in today's work--not only the work they had done for the errand, but also in the possibility of making a new friend.

The hands on Bridget's watch slowly ticked around to about 7:15, when finally Thora signaled it time to stop. The brunette wiped her dirty hands off on her jean-shorts; she could use Scourgify to clean them later. It appeared that they would be leaving this garden a lot better than they'd found it. The overgrowth of weeds had been stifled and the majority of fully grown vegetables had been collected.

Aside from the work they had completed for the actual errand, Bridget was feeling a sense of accomplishment in social terms. She was pretty sure this was the first time at Hogwarts she'd actually kept up a conversation without getting defensive or just sticking to asking the other person questions.

"We could sit next to each other at the end-of-term-feast if you'd like," Bridget said in response to Thora's question about meeting up somewhere. If Thora actually wanted to see her again, that must be a good sign!

"I dunno about the owling though. Once I get home I won't be able to access the wizarding world at all, except for reading my textbooks. But maybe we could work something out next year. Anyways, thanks for doing this errand with me Thora. It was fun."

With that, she picked up the other bucket of vegetables to drop off at the kitchens, following the redhead back towards the Castle.
