For the past two days, since what happened in the forest, being unable to sleep was an understatement. Even if she could, every second was just a broken record player, replaying the worst nightmare that came to reality. The excruciating pain was not the case anymore. It was the imprint of that moment that stained her. The pillow underneath her head was damp, easy to hide. But her bloodshot eyes and the dark circle told the thousand thoughts that left unspoken. The tale of the monster under the bed was a story most of the kids were familiar with. Why bother with that story anymore when the monster was inside her now? Running through her veins, circulating in her body, living and prospering. Maybe eating her alive from the inside as we speak. Nobody would know if whatever evil thing that the spider injected into her blood stream someday would possibly take control. Making her do things she doesn’t want to do, like a puppet master.

The black jacket from that day was hanging on the wall. Innocent as it was, not from Aurora’s point of view, however. It should have protected her, it should have prevented the bite. It didn’t. Never once had she shared an immense hatred towards an inanimate object. It brought back the painful memory, the one that she wanted to scratch out of her sight. But as long as the remnant of the calamity is still there, surely it will follow everywhere she goes, just like a parasite, sucking the life out of her. The gloominess in the room affected the once cheerful furball. Perhaps he detected the frustration of his owner, or he just felt the terrible vibe radiating throughout the four walls, Lucifur just curled up in a ball, and licking Aurora's cheek from time to time. Everything shall end. She grabbed the jacket harshly, along with her white shirt and boots, all from that cursed day, then letting her two feet lead the rest of her body outside the cabin. Neither physically nor mentally in a good state, the next thing she knew those fabrics and leather were indulged in flame. The fire she just cast upon, with the only hope for the darkness to stop haunting, or at least a peace of mind. Her teary brown eyes stared at the golden heat, as it destroyed the dreadful memory. Or did it?

To avoid confusion, she's not cursed. She just currently think she is since she had contact with the spiders

The night had felt especially cold. Everly had been awake for too long by now, and she couldn't fall asleep for some reason. Everything seemed all too real - the sounds of animals and wind, the other people in her cabin, her own thoughts - it all was too loud. She felt restless, and it seemed impossible to fall asleep now. A moment of contemplating, and her mind was made over - she'd take a small walk outside of her cabin, and hopefully that would be sufficient enough for her.

It wasn't long before she noticed something wrong.

Fire.

It wasn't too far, but it was prominent in her vision, crackling flames, mixtures of red and orange and yellow, sparks flying. It was small, but still - fire. Everly could see a lone figure, hovering above the fire, and something burning within the fire. The person seemed to be watching the fire, without any motion to try to stop it.

Everly stepped forward, but cautiously. She was still well away from the fire, but she was unsure what to do. Should she walk up and ask what they were doing? (That seemed a tad rude, to interrupt their period of silent rage.) Should she just stand there and watch? (It was kind of creepy just to stand there and stalk someone.) Should she just leave? (Curiosity worked wonders.)

She took a few more steps, and by now the person surely would have noticed her by now. If not, then they would when Everly spoke - the flames illuminated the face of the person, and Everly recognized them. The Ravenclaw girl from a few months ago, the one who had set a feather on fire in her Charms class. It was hard to believe that the girl here, who had set her clothes on fire outside of her cabin, was the same oblivious loud girl from before. "Aurora?"

Fire. A symbol for purification. Once it burns down, it shall be clean. As the combination of cellulose and synthetic fibres shrink in the fire, the smell of burnt paper and leaves making its way to everyone nearby, dark greyish smoke rushed to the atmosphere, what once was a set of clothing attire now turned into whatever it was, melting and dripping. But the memory of the previous nights wouldn’t go away. It felt as if those beasts were still watching her, probably ecstatic, laughing maniacally, knowing that they got her weak spot. What is their secret? Why does it take a toll on her even after the event? Was it a curse bound to her? She was not supposed to be there, the letter was clearly a trap to harm the ravenclaws. The reasoning or who the sender behind it was still unknown.

Through the clouded mind, questions after one another lingered a little too long like uninvited guests. Wish she could stand her ground and tell them to leave, strong enough to fight them away. Surely not today. She was trapped in a dark room with one door as a way out. But it was locked, barricaded, just as good as being dead.

"Aurora?"

Between the sound of the fire and the wind, a voice approached her slowly as if asking for permission. Her eyes immediately looked at the source of the sound, slightly stepping back in a defensive manner. But when the realisation came in a soothing way, it was not a threat, the tense on her body quickly replaced by a more relaxed one. The sign was her deep sigh followed by little taps on the chest. “H-hi” Agitation. Though her feet were glued to the ground, both hands were moving with no purpose as if the urge couldn’t be fought off. Then they landed on her face, wiping off her anxiousness. If only it was that easy. “I’m d-doing great! If you’re wondering. It’s just- it’s just very cold, i-isn’t it?” She ended it with a smile. But if you know Aurora, she was the worst liar ever. The tears made it obvious to break the mask she was trying to wear.

Aurora startled, and Everly's hand darted to the pocket in her robes, fingers brushing lightly over the ridges in wood, unsure if she should panic or not. She looked upon bloodshot eyes and dark bags underneath the Ravenclaw's eyes, and Everly immediately realized that something was indeed very, very wrong. She didn't seem to feel too agitated once she'd realized Everly posed no threat, meaning that it wasn't her.

What happened, she wanted to ask, the question on the tip of her tongue. It was there, its imprint weighty, just waiting to leave.

It wasn't her place to pry what had happened. She was just here to make sure Aurora was okay, she reminded herself.

When she spoke, it was careful, gentle, and hesitant. This whole endeavor was new, uncharted lands, and Everly was terrified, whether she would admit that or not. Everly took comfort in always living in adventure, having something new to experience left and right, without taking root, and leaving the place better than it was before she came. She took comfort in fixing, not breaking. Failure, ruin, defeat, they all left her horror-struck.

"Hey," Everly said, trying to sound as comforting as possible without sounding like she was talking to a baby. "It is quite cold, isn't it?" The temperature during the nights in the summer were significantly cooler than in the day, and she felt its effect now, breathing out slowly as if expecting white mist to follow, disappointed when it didn't make an appearance.

She nodded her head towards the fire; the flames engulfing the leather material slowly, second by second, taking over and replacing where the jacket once was, smoke rising from the burning mess and twisting like snakes dancing in the sky.

"W-what's that?" She asked, her voice trembling slightly as she spoke, a sign, if any, of her nervousness - not of the danger the fire posed, but of Aurora, out of concern, and of herself, waiting for her to accidentally do something stupid, act on impulse, and ruin everything. A walking mess, that's what this summer was.

What happened? A question hidden behind a consoling voice with delicate precision, but there nonetheless.

It burnt out, she burnt out.

One thing that she wanted, the reason why she ran towards the tall formation of trees, was to know the truth, perhaps she could help, maybe she could be useful for once. That day, what was supposed to be an innocent day, everyone was on the brink of death. Whilst some of them continued on with their day as if it was a regular thing, she let the fear clouded her vision.

Two eyes had seen something no one ever wanted to see. The crippling darkness nested inside his body, along with his blood. Whatever happened to him in the past, part of her still wanted to uncover the truth, but the majority of her consciousness refused. Her fingers played with the strands of her long hair. The warm lights from the fire highlighted every feature of the girl that she tried so hard to conceal. Vacant stares, thinking of the choices she had made in the past. If only she stayed in that hell in the form of a muggle school, the only fear she would have to face was having no one to talk to.

Three times the charm, they said. If those creatures ever come back, would she be able to handle the fears, or would she let it mess with her head? The hatred she had towards herself for being weak, yet she couldn’t do anything about it. Not now. All kinds of ghosts down in her basement were playing tricks. How would she be able to protect who she loves when she couldn’t even do it to herself? Then Everly’s sudden question startled her. “W-what is what?” Eyes watched the gryffindor in horror, then looked around as if she was anticipating something. Something dangerous. “Did you- did you see something?” Reading her wand, she was on the outlook. As she stepped backwards closer to the fire, her jackets wouldn’t be the only thing that burnt to ashes if she continued. But her senses were wrecked.

This wasn't the Aurora she knew. Everly's eyes darted around her surroundings, trying to decipher what exactly had caused the Ravenclaw to be so frightened. She seemed to jump at every little thing, staring at Everly as if she had a giant spider on her head. Something was wrong, that was easy enough to figure out, but she didn't know what. And it seemed to be grave.

Aurora took her question in an entirely different way. Everly glanced curiously at her, who was staring back with such panic that Everly grew even more worried. Peering over to look at the woods around them, she shuddered slightly. Who knew what was beyond them and the little burning, crackling fire. She didn't want to imagine them, instead turning back to Aurora.

"The fire," she prompted, gesturing to the flames. See something? Other than varying shadows and trees, she noted after glancing briefly behind Aurora, there was nothing. And besides the wind (which somehow managed to be creepy as well), they seemed to be alone. At least from what she could hear. Aurora reached for her wand, though, so something was up. "What happened out here?" she asked, deciding to just dive in head first. After all, if they never even approached the topic at all, they were never going to get anywhere. She didn't want to impose on her too much, though, so she backtracked quickly. "It's pretty late, after all."

A slight relief washed over her once she knew Everly didn’t see something eerie lurking in the darkness. She let out a sigh as she turned her face back towards the fire. It didn’t change a thing, the burnt clothes were merely causing smoke that caused global warming. It didn’t come off in the wash, it didn’t purify her fear. “Sorry- I just-” The girl lowered her wand once more but didn’t let it go just yet. In contrast to her, the Gryffindor seemed to not consider the place they were both standing on as dangerous. Whilst she was jumpy, Everly was just being a good friend, trying to help with what she had. Communication.

Aurora didn’t realise that her unusual demeanour was more worrying than the darkness itself. Perhaps it had eaten her alive. She sat back down on the ground, watching the flame indulged in the melted fabrics. “Did you hear about what happened a couple days ago? Near the forest?” She didn’t know which one would be worse, the other students lived nonchalantly, not knowing about the danger they were in or them living in fear. Would it be better for them to know the truth but let go of their peacefulness? It was a completely different feeling seeing monsters in the movies and real life. Her life changed right after she stepped into the wizarding world ground, to the point that she was questioning her sanity. Was it all real or was she living in her imagination? Whilst part of her wanted it to be just a dream, an imagination that somehow seemed real, she wasn’t the only one who experienced the attack. “I can still feel them”
