Date: 3oth of May, the day after the Blossom Ball.
Time: Before breakfast, probably around 5:30 am.
Mel wasn't one for all that "the birds are chirping, the sun is shining" nonsense, but she had to admit, this morning wasn't half bad. A breeze blowing in from the north made the air crisp and cold, and rustled the treetops like a playful older sibling mussing a kid's hair. Watery sunshine broke through the clouds, carrying a promise of warmth later on in the day. For now, though, it was a perfect, chilly Scottish morning, just right for a little flying practice.

The young Thunderbird carried her broom -a Nimbus 1700, which had been a holiday gift- across the Quidditch Training Pitch. It had taken her a while to find the place, as she was unacquainted with the Hogwarts grounds. When she had discovered it empty, and had been able to remember no rules against it, Mel figured the pitch was hers to use. And a good thing it was, too, because after the crazy events of the Blossom Ball the night before, the girl needed to clear her head.

She swung a leg over the wooden handle of the broom, and pushed off from the ground. Immediately the feeling of soaring washed over her. Before receiving her acceptance letter to Ilvermorny, Mel had always dreamed of flying. If you had told her, back then, that this was where she'd soon be, you would have been shot a skeptical look and a (not so polite) declaration of your unsound mind. But now... after only a few months, Mel couldn't imagine not being able to hop on her broomstick and take off.

At first, Mel stayed close to the ground as she got her bearings in the air. Soon she was flying higher and higher, into the vast blueness overhead. She let out a whoop of joy, then slapped a hand to her mouth, hoping she hadn't woken anyone. As the girl was circling a particularly tall pine, she heard a voice from down below. But she couldn't quite make out what it was saying. Probably some professor here to scold her. Damn. Why hadn't she been quieter? Begrudgingly, Mel turned to fly closer to the ground. But what she found down on the pitch wasn't a sleep-deprived, ticked-off teacher. No, looking up at her, broom in hand, was a girl about her age.

Hey Tory! Sorry this is so incredibly late! And also for the thread title. I know it's super cringy, but I couldn't think of anything else. Owl me with any suggestions and I'll fix it. ^^

The morning was misty and light, the sun just barely shining through the heavy layer of clouds; a perfect spring dawn to Briar. She had always loved the early morning, which was something her father and her bonded over. She had fond memories of the two of them sitting on the old, wooden porch of their Colorado home, watching the sunrise and listening to the birds chirp as the rest of the household slept in. This was no different, except it was more flying around on a broom stick in the great mountains of Scotland than watching sunrises.

Having been on the Thunderbird Quidditch team since the beginning of the year, flying was now something that Briar deeply adored, more than she ever thought she would have. At first, it had taken her a while to gain balance and confidence on her broom, which was a Cleansweep, but now, she could mount and dismount it quite easily. It was such an amazing feeling, being so high in the air with the wind rushing through your hair, and the view of all the trees and the castle below you. She hadn't flied since the last match of the season back at Ilvermorny, and she needed to feel that rushing feeling again, and so she had navigated through the large school to their own Quidditch Pitch nearly getting lost twice.

Briar had arrived to the big pitch, getting ready to hop onto her broom, but had then heard a loud whoop of joy come from somewhere above. Glancing up, she could see a figure zooming around in circles. She couldn't quite tell who the person was, they were too high up, but they seemed to be having a very good time. "Hello?" The Thunderbird called out to the person. She then gripped her own broom a bit tighter, getting ready to launch herself, when the person came zooming down closer to the ground. Close enough so that the first year could see them clearly.

It appeared to be another girl, maybe 11 or 12, as far as Briar could tell. She looked up at the flying girl, smiling, suddenly very glad that she would have some company. "Hi! I'm Briar." She introduced herself cheerily, shivering as a slight wind hit her in the face, before it occured to her that it would probably be smart to state where she was from, as well, with 3 other schools inhabiting the school at the moment. "I'm from Ilvermorny, a Thunderbird." She added on, then, without waiting for the other girl's introduction, wrapped her legs around her broom, zooming off through the chilly morning.

Hey! Don't worry about the wait, I don't mind. The title is cringy, but also really cute, so I don't have many suggestions!

"Hi! I'm Briar."

The girl was smiling at her, though Mel had utterly no idea why.
"I'm from Ilvermorny; a Thunderbird," the newcomer announced.
Ohhhh. Now she recognized her housemate. Briar, a Chaser on the Quidditch team. Mel wondered how she hadn't remembered her sooner. Though they were both on the team, the two didn't know each other all that well, or even really interact much.

Before Mel had a chance to say anything, Briar mounted her broom and took off toward her. The First Year didn't know what this other girl expected her to do, but she admired Briar's boldness. "Oh, yeah I know. I'm Mel. We're both on the Quidditch Team?" She flew closer and circled Briar.
It struck Mel then how similar the two looked. She'd never noticed it before. Mel's
brown-blonde hair and Briar's light chestnut. Briar's brown eyes and Mel's hazel. Their tanned skin and light freckles across their cheeks were uncanny, though Mel was a few inches taller.* "We look... a lot alike." Gosh, that sounded awkward. Ok, say something normal to cover it up. Hmm... what? Briar looked pretty comfortable on a broom. It was true that Mel was a good flier, but being Muggle-born she had only been doing it for a year. Could her team mate tell? Mel knew she wasn't wobbly, but were her turns off? Was her technique shoddy? That would be embarrassing. She had to do something to show off her talent. And maybe beat Briar in some good old competition. "Hey," she pointed at the castle, "Race you to that turret over there!" And with that, Mel took off like a bullet.

Having grown up with 4 siblings, Briar was more than slightly competitive. Her whole life, everything had unnecessarily been turned into a competition. Whoever got to the dinner table first, whoever could chug a glass of water faster, whoever could go the longest without leaving their bedroom. And so, given her nature, when Mel had yelled "Race you to that turret over there!" Briar had not wasted a second, zooming off after her fellow Thunderbird through the crisp morning air.

Unfortunately for Briar, though, Mel seemed to arrive at the said turret just seconds before her. "Ah, darn it!" Briar said, huffing and puffing as she slowed and pulled up next to the girl. When Mel had said they looked sort of similiar she hadn't been wrong- the 12 year old could kind of see it now that she took a closer look at her new friend. "Good job!" She said to Mel excitedly, smiling at her yet again and tightening her grip on her broom. Although competitive, Briar was fair, and was taught better than to be a sore loser about something small like this.

"How do you like Hogwarts?" She inquired. Personally, she really loved it here. Not more than her own school, of course, but it just seemed so peaceful here. Not to mention the beautiful views. From pretty much everywhere in the castle there was a wonderful sight of the Scottish mountains and Great Lake, especially while high in the air as Briar was right now. She could see everything, far and wide.

Hello, Calypso! I apoligize for the long wait. I've had no motivation lately whatsoever.
