School brooms were rickety, old pieces of garbage, far as Maggie was concerned. And honestly? She thought getting on one would be a true death wish. Maybe it would splinter midair and she'd plummet to her doom, or it might start flying backwards rather than forwards and she'd be all but dust come tomorrow morning.

All the more reason for a flying lesson.

Well, a lesson of sorts. See, Maggie didn't really know how to fly. Not well, at least. Or, let's just say, in kinder words, she wasn't exactly captain of the Holyhead Harpies. Yet. And it wasn't exactly her fault, considering the recent introduction into wizard society and all. Maggie had no control over when, exactly, her mother decided to introduce her to the world.

But how could she resist the opportunity to make a new friend? Nay, how could she say no to being asked to help a potential new friend fly?

Enter Avery Chen. Nice little first year, Maggie couldn't hardly believe that he wanted her help learning to fly. Not only that, but to fly for Quidditch!

Still, it wouldn't hurt to have a friend on the team beside her.

And that takes us right up to now. Maggie sat on a stupid dumb big rock, tie half undone (as per usual), waiting on Avery Chen and Hui Ming, his little lap dog, dare she say it, to show. She didn't have an issue with Ming, really. In fact, she quite liked him! Thought he was fun to tease and berate within reason. However, when faced with the situation of an unauthorized, far-from-professional first year teaching another to fly and acting as a personal coach? Maggie couldn't imagine he'd take it too well.

Only time would tell, she supposed.

It was another dreary, cloudy day, typical of the region's climes, but the weather was a direct contrast to Avery's current mood. He had been waiting desperately over the past couple of days for this very second. It was ever so kind of Maggie Hawkins to agree to his suggestion of her teaching him how to fly. After all, he knew her to be a good sport from their homework group over the weekend, always eager to take up a new challenge. In addition to her interest in quidditch, he figured she would be the perfect coach.

He hadn't gotten very far during their very first flying class before they ran out of time. After some difficulty getting the broom to rise to his hand, he had mounted the broom anxiously, willing it to levitate him off the ground. He barely managed a foot off the ground before class was over.

Well, today was going to be his lucky day, he told himself, as he walked to the Quidditch Training Pitch with two school brooms in his hands, which he had borrowed from the equipment shed. He'd told Ming to meet him at the pitch since he needed to make a visit to the shed beforehand. From what he could sense upon telling his friend about his scheduled flying lesson with Hawkins, the bespectacled boy was very apprehensive about the whole idea. Oh Ming, ever the pessimist. That boy needed to take a chill pill.

He couldn't wait to feel the afternoon breeze in his face, as he rode up into the sky like a bird. What good was magic if you couldn't experience it yourself? This was the exact kind of experience he'd hoped for when he found out he was going to Hogwarts.

He found the short-haired girl perched upon a stupid dumb big rock in the pitch, probably one of the obstacles they'd have to learn how to fly around today. "Oy, Maggie!" he called and waved as he approached her rock. "Look at these beauties that I got from the shed!" he held out the two beat-up old school brooms proudly. One of them seemed to have some bent bristles, the other a chip in its shaft. They were beautiful.

Maggie had attended the flying class and, not to brag, but she was quite the natural. She'd always been inclined to be competitive even in activities that didn't warrant it, but also was skilled at working with her teammates and surroundings. Using them to her advantage. So, of course, she'd be trying out for team chaser. But she was always open to having a friend on the team, someone she was quite familiar with, and so when it had been suggested days earlier by Avery, Maggie had agreed with an enthusiastic smile.

"Howdy, partner!" Maggie paused for effect. "Americans say that. Just for reference," her gaze traveled to the brooms, puffing her cheeks out at the sight. They were beaten up, had seen better days, a bit worse for wear. Clearly, they'd been a central part of the school's history, the memory hiding right below the surface of the chipped and splintering wood. Poetic, almost.

Maggie thought they were ugly.

But! Beggars couldn't be choosers, and Maggie took the broom with the bent bristles in a bare hand. Maybe she should've grabbed her gloves on the way out of the dormitory, avoid getting splinters in the gentle skin of her palms, but it was no use to ponder such things now.

"Where's your friend Stick-in-the-mud?" She asked, surveying the expanse of ground surrounding them. She was, of course, referring to Hui Ming, who she didn't necessarily dislike.

Their personalities were sure different, that was for certain.

Maggie greeted him with an unfamiliar "Howdy, partner!" and he tilted his head at the unconventional greeting. "Americans say that. Just for reference," she explained. Okay, that explained it. He figured it was probably a slurred combination of 'how do you do' that the Americans just decided to butcher.

She puffed out her cheeks at the two brooms he held up for her to admire, seemingly not impressed. "No, not pretty?" he asked, not quite remembering what his broom looked like in class. He probably wasn't the best school broom selector, but then again, he'd never been to a wizarding broom shop to see any real broom beauties, and these brooms looked a lot better than the ones he'd seen street cleaners use.

He let Maggie take the broom with the bent bristles, and took out his protective gloves from his back pocket for the chipped broom, excited to get ready.

"Where's your friend Stick-in-the-mud?" she asked, and he grinned at Ming's new nickname. That guy was racking them up this week. "Oh, he'll be here soon," he replied. "He's been giving me an earful about how this is a dangerous idea, but maybe he just thinks brooms aren't good enough for transportation, who knows. I wouldn't be surprised if his family drives a Maserati or two."

But, Ming or not, he was ready to begin. "Why don't we get started first without him?" He decided to begin by practicing what they'd learned in class. Laying the broom on the ground, he raised his right hand and called, "Up!" and the broom rose to his palm. At least he got that part now. He mounted the broom, and bent his knees, willing it to lift him. He imagined soaring into the air....

...And the broom lifted him up. Way up. Like five meters into the air. Surprised, he faltered and almost toppled off his broom, but regained his grip and balance at the last second, and at least managed to hold stationary without going higher or off into the distance. "Holy!" He gasped and tried to manage his rapid heartbeat. Maybe starting this ambitiously high wasn't a good idea when he hadn't yet learned to steer, or managed to execute a successful landing from higher than a foot.

Usually, most Saturdays the green eyes spent their time either practicing their music - be it with a guitar that they usually carried with them everyhere the Cuban descendant go or behind a piano - you can found them either under the Oak Tree at the Great Lake or in the Rehearsal Room but not today.

Today, Cash decided to stretch their limbs and practice some manuvers for whenever Quidditch season will be start. After finishing their long overdue Muggle Studies homeworkm Cash decided to fly around the Quidditch Training Pitch for a bit until dinner time rolled in. They begin their journey from the deepest part of the castle which where their House located to the training pitch.

When the green eyes finally arrived at the pitch, they hoped they got the pitch for themselves but turns out someone already beated them to it. Two someone to be exact. They never saw the students before and from the looks of it - aka the other two new faces - both of them are first year.

One of them (Avery) carried two old school brooms from only Merlin's knew where the boy found it. Cash knew that if you wanted to borrowed some old school brooms, you got to asked Professor Jemari for it. Cash done that in their previous year when they had a friendly practice with by then still a Hufflepuff's Beater and one of their good friend, Lindsey Springhall.

Cash shooked their head but did not dwelled too long about it as they marched toward Slytherin Locker Room where they store they broom. One Comet 180. The broom used belong to their mother when she was also a Quidditch player for this school. Once Cash fetched their broom, Cash walked back to the pitch again.

The Cuban descendant then marched toward the new students. Upon closer look, one of them is a girl. "You know, I do not know where in the world did you get that brooms,"Cash stated as they looked at one of the beated up broom that the girl now hold it on her hand. "But if you want to borrow and use the brooms, you got to asked the flying professor for it"They explained to the new students.

"Have either one of you asked for his permission?"They inquired the other students. Then something clicked in their mind. These two could be the new potentials addition for the new school year roster of Slytherin Quidditch team players. "Is there any chance you lots name are Maggie Hawkins and Avery Chen?"The green eyes asked.

If their memory served them correctly, Cash saw the new names up on the Quidditch signed - up sheets whenever the young Ironwoods came and goes between classes as they passed their Common Room bulletin board.

"No. Not pretty," Maggie confirmed with a short, curt nod. Not pretty at all. But it had personality and the capacity for flight and that was plenty. Looks didn't quite matter if the thing worked, at that was all Maggie cared for right now. "Not pretty at all."

It wasn't a tasteful thing. It looked as if the wood stain had been almost stripped from the wood itself, splintered and bare all around, and the bristles were spread out like tree branches opening up towards the sky. Like the Whomping Willow, except ten times less tidy. Which was saying something considering that Maggie considered the Whomping Willow, while quite historic and magical, to be an eyesore.

Maggie listened to Avery and chewed the upper layer of skin from her lower lip, a nervous habit she'd picked up over the years. "Wouldn't surprise me if his family had a Tesla. Or something," Hui Ming seemed like he came from new money. Much different than old. New cars and technology and, like, rocket-powered shoes. Or something.

"So first, I'm thinking we--" Maggie was cut off by Avery taking off like he was the captain of the freaking Ballycastle Bats.

It didn't look like he knew very well how to come back down.

Maggie groaned and started clambering up the face of the big rock, hopefully putting her out closer to Avery and enabling her to grab him if he drifted closer. "Fly yourself over here! I'll grab you and pull you back down," she only hoped to pull Avery out of his little adventure before they got caught.

Too late. Cash Ironwoods, third year beater. Slytherin fame. They were busted.

"What? Oh," Maggie grunted and stood up on her tiptoes, balancing with the broom against the rock face like a cane. "No, we didn't ask. Bit of a situation, here!"

Oh! Where were her manners? This was a real quidditch player. "Yeah, that's us. You're Cash? Ironwoods?"

Momentarily, Avery's plight was forgotten.

He clung to the broom for dear life. The ground was way too far for someone who'd never maneuvered on a broom in his life. Heck, he barely knew how to clean with a broom. That was the extent to his limited experience with brooms.

At least he was straight, upright and balanced. Not tipping over. ...Let's not imagine that right now. This broom seemed to know his thoughts all too well, and that's exactly how he got in this pickle in the first place.

"Fly yourself over here! I'll grab you and pull you back down," Maggie suggested helpfully, and thank goodness the girl was intent on helping him save his life. He willed himself and the broom to inch towards the stupid dumb magnificent big life-saving rock. He slowly managed to float towards Maggie's outstretched hand, hardly noticing that an older brunette had approached them. The small boy leaned flat across the handle of his broom and reached for the girl's hand. Almost there...

And then he watched in anguish as the first-year girl withdrew her hand to make star-stricken eyes at the brunette. "You're Cash? Ironwoods?" Avery scowled. You would think that this was not the moment to ask for an autograph or whatever she intended to do. Granted, he'd heard that Cash Ironwoods was an accomplished third-year beater on the Slytherin team and a good friend of his bunkmate Henry Knight, but he had more pressing matters to attend to. He inched himself closer to Maggie, leaned over and reached for the collar of her robes, grabbing a fistful of cloth to anchor himself so at least he wouldn't float away or something. "A little help here? Please?" he asked, desperately trying to regain his savior's attention. If she would snap back to her senses, he would finally have both feet on sweet earth again.

This was a bad idea.

The bespectacled first-year knew it to be so and had warned his best friend. Several times. It would not end well. It could not. First-years were not allowed brooms. In a world where first years were allowed to carry devices that could cause explosions, where oversight was lax and safety was a mere afterthought, where broken bones meant days in recovery instead of a lifetime disability; the students were actually forbidden from doing something. And Ming took it seriously.

Not that he found that levitating lethal distances in the air to be particularly more dangerous in this school than, say, to attempt to talk to some upper years. After all, it was only floating with the support of nothing other than a stick with worn-down enchantments. And if the stick failed to support the rider's weight, one would only plummet down several dozen feet with no training on how to land, and brittle bones to break the force of the fall. Lovely. An absolute delight. What could possibly go wrong.

It was with a mixture of frustration and resignation that Hui Ming went down to the Quidditch practice area. He was not sure what he was aiming to achieve here. He could have simply not shown up, to indicate his disapproval to his boisterous and over-friendly best friend. He had considered running to a professor - either Jemari, or the school medic - to be on hand if things went, as they did so often, out of control. He had considered drawing his wand and forcing the boy into submission, to make his see reason and sense.

In the end, none of those options seemed quite right to the bespectacled boy. And so he had decided to show up to the field. Perhaps it was out of loyalty to his friend - he did not want Avery to get into trouble if he did not need to. Perhaps it was out of concern - a level head to run to the adults, if they were needed. Perhaps it was out of a petty need to be proved right.

So here he was after classes, briskly walking towards the training area. The situation wasn't yet dire enough to warrant that he bring himself to the indignity of hurrying in his school clothes, or worse having to actually run.

When he arrived, the scene that met him was simultaneously more hopeful and more dire than he had expected. On the one hand, it appeared that his fellow first-years had already been caught by an upperclassman. And a Slytherin one too, by the looks of all the green that they were wearing. The upperclassman seemed to be in conversation with Miss Hawkins while Avery-

Ming all but ran towards the training pitch, all but interrupting the conversation between the upperclassman and Miss Hawkins who seemed to be introducing themselves.

"Hi. Yes, this is all very interesting Miss." He all but barged into the conversation. "But perhaps we can save the introductions for after keeping the boy from flying away like some manner of rogue kite?"

It seems both of the first years broke one of the rule for flying, at least it is on Cash's book. One of the rules for flying was always have someone to keep an eye at you. Whether it was the flying Professor or someone older. But this two decided it was a good idea to fly about and around when they just learn how to fly.

It took Cash for months learnt to find their balance. Until they found their balanced then they signed up to be on their house Quidditch team rosters. As Cash asked whether both of them named Avery Chen and Maggie Hawkins, the short haired girl said the green eyes were indeed correct. Maggie then asked whether the name that was uttered from her lips were true or not.

When Maggie said both of them in a situation. Cash looked up to the hovering boy that hanged on his broom for dear life. Cash wanted to laughed out loud at the boy misfortune or perhaps it more like out of his own dumbness. "A little help here? Please?"Said the boy that Cash assumed his name was Avery Chen.

The green eyes switched holding their broom from their left onto their right hand. As Cash wanted to say yes that indeed Maggie was right about their name, another boy entered the training pitch. "Hi. Yes, this is all very interesting Miss,"He barged into the conversation. "But perhaps we can save the introductions for after keeping the boy from flying away like some manner of rogue kite?"Exclaimed the bespectacled boy.

The Cuban descendant clicked their tongue and looked at the ill - mannered boy as they raised one of their eyebrow. The way Ming said the word 'Miss' reminded them of Barclay (The Ironwoods chauffeur - driver). There was a distinct manner that emitted from the bespectacled boy. The young Ironwoods did not know whether the other boy (Ming) is a halfblood, pureblood or worst, a muggle - born.

Ming acted like he was well mannered but he is not. "First of all, it is so polite of you barged into someone conversation like that"Cash tutted and directed it to Hui Ming. "If you are a pureblood, I took pity at you parents. They raised an ill - mannered child"Cash stated then their green eyes averted from Hui Ming to Maggie.

"You are correct. That was me"The Beater said. From Maggie they looked at Avery. "Well, I would like to help you,"Cash stretched out their hand but they retracted it quickly before the boy could grabbed it. "If you managed to fly up then you surely have idea how to come down, don't you?"They said to Avery with a smirk on their lips.

Magical people or not; if Cash was in the boy's (Avery) shoes, the young socialite would not dare try to fly with limited knowledge not like this dimwit.

A real Quidditch player! A real member of the Slytherin Quidditch team. How exciting, how intriguing and amazing for Maggie. Maybe a new mentor, someone to teach her how to play.

Or not, because Cash seemed to be pretty peeved at them for flying without teacher permission. And without the know-how to really even fly in the first place.

Maggie tried to squash down her disappointment, because there was stuff of greater importance now! Avery Chen, grabbing her robes and tugging her backward. And, of course, Hui Ming making his appearance. All red-faced and worried. Like a mother. Kinda funny.

"Oh, god, Avery!" Maggie yelped, jerked back by Avery's hold on the collar of her robes. Any more and she'd be dragged off the rock! Gah! "Calm down, man, you're gonna carry me off, too! I got it, Ming, hold your horses."

Lordy. Hui Ming needed to take a chill pill.

This was so embarrassing. "I promise that we're normally more composed than this," Maggie glanced to the upperclassman apologetically, "we'll get down right away. Avery quit squirming."

Making this a whole lot more difficult! After a few moments of trying to pull the other boy down, Maggie finally made progress; pulled Avery down so he could now stand on solid ground.

What a mess.
