For the record, Cel, all of my Latin comes from Google Translate.
Backdated to the beginning of the school year.
The traitor. The backstabbing liar, the one person she thought that she could trust in this, this hideously enormous castle filled with hostiles who couldn't appreciate good music, classical music. The girl she was supposed to play a duet with! The Ravenclaw she consistently cheated off of. What was she supposed to do now? Clenching and unclenching her fists as she paced up and down her dormitory, Ami growled as she froze by her bed, trembling from anger. She had to do something. She had to. She couldn't just sit here and let this- this betrayal slide. That perfidious student had to pay for the heartbreak she had endowed upon Ami.
You didn't mess with a Procoppio without getting whiplash.
Finally, she thought to confront the girl. Reaching for her copy of the Marauder's Map, Ami idly thought about just how ironic it was that the Map was so widespread. It seemed to be in everyone's hands, after the creators were long gone, and Harry Potter had been sent to Azkaban. Someone seemed to have gotten their hands on it, and made copies to sell. Her mother had gotten this copy for her, instructing her to only use it for good, instead of causing trouble. She wasn't necessarily causing trouble now, she supposed, but it certainly wasn't being used for good. It was being used... for revenge. Yes, that was it.
Squinting at the map, she checked the Ravenclaw tower, first. Chances were, Celynne was already in her common room at this time of the evening, already tired of the existence of other people. To her surprise, however, no Celynne Gray was made particularly obvious to her as she scanned the entirety of the tower with a sharp eye. So, if not in the eagle's nest, where else would she be?
Well, she was a scholar, of course. There was a chance that she might still be in the library- yeah, that sounded just like Celynne. Glancing to the library, the map only confirmed her suspicions- Celynne was in the library, still studying, apparently. Folding the map shut and stuffing it in her drawers, she grabbed her wand and stuffed it into her back pocket before going off to find Celynne, ready to tell her off. Her face carried the stormy turmoil that was rolling inside of her, with furrowed eyebrows and a fierce scowl. Like this, she almost looked to be a third, maybe even a fourth year- certainly not a happy-go-lucky second year like she was supposed to be.
Bursting into the library as loudly as the librarian would be okay with, she scanned the tables before locating a dark head bent over her work studiously. Gotcha. Storming over to the table angrily, Ami slammed her hands on the table, clearly grabbing Celynne's attention. Giving her the meanest stink eye she had from across the table, she hissed the word that she had looked up specifically for this purpose-
"Proditor!" she growled, deciding that she would most certainly be kicked out of the library if she started full-on yelling. She knew that Celynne spoke Latin- well, it was more like, she had a major obsession with Latin. But she would understand the meaning of the word- traitor. "You're no better than Benedict Arnold, and you know what? That actually makes sense, because I'm American, and you're... you're more British than I am!" Ami continued, her voice straining as she could feel her arms trembling. She wasn't sure if she was closer to crying or closer to yelling, but this weird mix of emotions inside of her did not feel good.
She was mad, of course, because of Celynne's bloodline- she was related to her sworn enemy and archnemesis, Dorian Gray. Her mother had informed her of this interesting development within the pureblood community, inquiring if she knew either of the students. Of course, Ami had never told her mother just what happened with Dorian and Eris behidn the Groundskeeper's cabin, and she certainly hadn't ever mentioned Celynne beyond a simple acknowledgement, so she denied ever knowing them. However, the news had cut her straight to the very center of her heart- in short, she was heartbroken by this betrayal of someone she considered a blood sister, through their bond with music.
She couldn't be Gray-spawn. She couldn't.

"Quid?"
That was only the first, partly shocked, very confused word that came out of Cel's mouth as someone had the indecency to slam her hands on the wooden table beside where she worked. Her pen raised in surprise, ink drying rapidly underneath the metal tip that hovered in the air. The tables were delicate things; nobody should want to risk fracturing their thin wooden tabletops, not to mention disturb them so that the letters scribbled hastily in her essay shook any more than they already did.
When she did look up to see who it was, already moving to set her pen--a novel idea that very few Purebloods liked to entertain, especially seemingly magical ones like her friction pens--to the side, she exhaled a sigh of relief. Tension, however, was reeled back in by the meter as she saw the expression on her friend's face. Ami looked... angry. A little voice in her head told her that that was a stupidly obvious thing to think. Another voice snapped back at it to shut up and go away. The prior was miffed, but obliged.
Cel frowned. "Ami, are you okay?" she began, but no sooner had the words made it out of her mouth that the Hufflepuff snapped at her a single word--proditor. The most basic word that translated directly, or at least mostly directly, to traitor. Ah, so Ami was mad at her. And... why, exactly? Clearly Ami felt betrayed, comparing her to the likes of Benedict Arnold and such. But what exactly had Cel done to bring this upon herself? A strange feeling, that was what this was. It was like guilt, but she herself didn't know what she was guilty about, just that she didn't like seeing her friend upset, especially if she had caused it. How, exactly, she wasn't sure.
"I'm still American," the young Ravenclaw grumbled under Ami's barrage. "Literally. My passport says so, anyway." Perhaps not the best time to bring up technicalities. Ami hadn't actually said that Cel wasn't American, just that she was less American. That didn't really make sense, except it did a little. Cel was a little offended, but it was true. And... most likely she was over-analyzing this, just like she did whenever she was presented with a confrontation.
...Yeah, she was definitely over-analyzing this.
Respond. That was what she had to do. There had to be some mistake, some misunderstanding... was this about the pen she hadn't returned? No, people could be silly, but probably not that silly, especially the ones that she dared to deem friends. Ami wouldn't be this worked up over that one pen. "What--what--Ami, what are you talking about?" Maybe not the most gentle response for someone in a bad mood, but Cel was both puzzled and aghast. If it didn't get cleared up quickly, it would probably only get worse. "Whatever it is, um, I'm sorry about... it, and it can probably be reversed?"
There, the first thing to do: apologize. Perhaps a bit poorly delivered, but it was done. Usually when Svana yelled at her, the thing she did wrong would be made clear right at the beginning, so she had little experience for apologizing for something unidentified. Oh, she was no fool; the girl knew full well that apology would not be the end of this conversation. Her mental self was running fingers through her hair at this point, repeating one very confused and slightly irritated phrase over and over: what the frick?
At least she'd gone by her stepmother's words. It usually worked to calm Svana down quickly, though sometimes it, uh, didn't. And of course, Svana and Ami were extremely different people, but people were still people, and both of them were mad at her because of something she did wrong. Betrayal, apparently. Did she... lie about anything of consequence recently? Hurt one of Ami's possible friends? Accidentally trash something? Cel racked her brain in earnest, trying so hard to remember something, anything, but... nothing presented itself. Hmph. There went her plans for a couple hours of good, high-quality, peaceful essay-writing. The glow of satisfaction as she went to bed would probably soon be replaced by the hollow feeling in her stomach. This was going to be a long night.

Ugh. This was why she hated Ravenclaws so much- always so logical and level-headed. Although she could easily be considered the most Hufflepuff-iest of the Hufflepuffs, she always bored heavy traces of a Gryffindor spitfire in her blood; explosive, impulsive, and apparently, didn't really have an 'off' button. Still trembling, Ami slid into the seat across from Celynne, her face still twisted into a heavy mask of anger and fury. Honestly, she would end up looking like Yoda if she kept her face in this position for long enough.
"Do you think I'm okay?" Ami growled, her hands clenched into fists on the table top. She had already gotten into trouble last year for using her fists instead of her words, and honestly, she didn't think she could bring herself to hit the girl in front of her. She was just so... small, and delicate, like a flower. Of course, she would've been a rose- a flower with hidden thorns that would grow to bite you in the butt if you weren't careful. "Jesus, Gray, for a genius, you're pretty dumb."
Of course, the fact that Ami was using Celynne's new last name was a dead giveaway for just how mad she was at her. She practically spat the name at her, and considering that she used her last name rather than her first gave away just how upset she was. For the duration of time when Ami was on friendly terms with the Ravenclaw, she had always, always called her Cel. Never Celynne, never Flores.
Honestly, it was kind of impressive how mad Ami was.
Normally, when the redhead got in one of her 'moods', she simply let it boil over. If it didn't matter in 5 years, it wasn't worth getting mad over. However, this? This was too much. She wasn't going to associate herself with a name that was dripping with blood, especially if it was her blood staining the Gray name. What Dorian had done to her... it was payback, yes, but she still hated him with every bone in her body. She hated him.
"Right," Ami scoffed as Celynne tried to make amends, "Because you can reverse that amazing journey you went on this summer, you can reverse your discovery about who you are. You can reverse what your parents did, and who their children are. I don't think so, Gray."
Straightening up slightly, Ami's glare softened into one of intense pity for a brief moment before flashing back to pure hatred once more. "Do you even know what your brother did to me? I mean, I probably deserved it, but do you know what he did to me?" Carefully, she shrugged her fleece sweater off her shoulders, where she was just wearing a thin tank top underneath. She turned around, her shoulder blades and up completely exposed by her extremely short hair.
Her skin was marred heavily by burn scars, a mix keloid ad contracture scars. It clearly spread further down her back, but only what was exposed by by her tank top could actually be seen. Her shoulder blades were the worst, her scars still mottled and pink. The scarring stretched up to her neck, creeping up to the bottom of her hairline, and crept forward on her shoulders, as well.
"... send my dearest regards to Dorian, won't you?" Ami said coldly, standing up abruptly and grabbing her sweater. "And Gray? I never want to see you. Ever. Again."

Dictum, factum.
So much for working out her social predicament slowly and rationally. The temper before her was as far from rational as she would have liked it to be; practically smoking from the ears, actually. Cel drew her arms in, shoulders stiffening just shy of imperceptibly, brow furrowing in both confusion and fear, spooked enough for her hand to wander toward the belt that used to be constant on her hip. It was no longer there, of course, but she had yet to learn the reflex of going for her wand. This was going to be an uncomfortable conversation, to say the least.
She picked up on the name change immediately. Yup, she was definitely mad—what a useful thing to know now. But what exactly was she missing...? Ah. Gray. Not Celynne, or Flores, or whatever else would replace her usual nickname. Gray. Could that be what this was about? For the hundredth time this year, the girl considered her and her family's decision to keep the story quiet. Not that she regretted it or anything, but it was making her do a lot of explaining, and explaining—well, that was something she didn't like to do very much. But was that even any more than tangential?
Did that even matter?
The young Ravenclaw allowed herself a long, non-mental sigh, hands going up to tear through her hair in anxiousness, gut clenching uncomfortably. Maybe the hands weren't even there for her hair. Maybe they were there so that they could be in a defensive position, closer to her face, directed away in her memory that that wasn't... necessary? Was it? It never had been before, with anyone she'd allowed to be her friend, but the anger and betrayal and rage in the redhead's eyes—she'd seen it before, only once, only that time it hadn't been sober.
Because the furious, condemning madness that was in the closed fists, the hard brow, and the double-edged voice was completely sober, completely valid, and maybe getting a glass bottle thrown at you wasn't so bad compared to the shards of sentences that slid so carefully into her heart, her mind, her nerves. And she was afraid.
Oh, she tried. I don't understand, she tried to say. I didn't know, she tried to insist. I'm sorry, she tried to cry. But when she opened her mouth, nothing came out. Her vocal cords failed her, her tongue failed her, her diaphragm failed her... and her mind failed her, as it never had before. She was... not prepared for this situation? No, no, she'd never seen it before. What was happening? Her... her family, summer... brother... parents?... what... journey? What, what, what?
What the frick?
Then the scars came out. Cel's jaw dropped with an audible inhale, just loud enough to be heard in the beat of silence that followed. Raised skin, hypertrophic... those would have to be... second degree? Third, maybe? She followed the burns up until they disappeared under red hair and over shoulders, mouth closing but eyes narrowing in concern and... confusion. What a familiar feeling these days. Wait, but—
Dorian did this?
Had her mind been fully functioning, she would've reasoned through it like a rational human being. If Dorian did it, what did it say for her? Was anything actually her fault? Was Ami's argument valid in any way at all? No, actually, she thought of every reason listed. But certainly she wasn't thinking straight, because even with logic on her side, Cel's mind was on autopilot, because as blank-faced as she could look, she most definitely did have very human emotions. She just never knew what to actually do with them, especially when they were splitting her mind into pieces.
Only when the Hufflepuff had stood, spoken and egressed did she regain control of her vocal cords, though her diaphragm still barely responded to her wishes. Her skin felt cold, her throat felt strange and dry, her head hurt a little. A couple of seconds passed, her head lowering to the parchment forgotten in front of her, a little glazed over, not quite seeing it. "I'm sorry," she mouthed, and then the tears finally brimmed over.egressus

Although she was disgusted by it, Ami felt good about Celynne's disbelief. It was with a grim satisfaction that she heard her gasp, that she could almost feel her jaw dropping. She could feel Celynne's piercing gaze, her analytical and calculating stare traveling up her skin, crawling over the pink, raised flesh as she assessed just how much damage she had endured.
Satisfied with the shock factor she had just dumped onto the Ravenclaw, Ami tugged her cardigan over her shoulders, stoned faced as she strolled triumphantly from the library. She felt... well, she hadn't expected to feel good about this, but she felt empty, for some reason. Whatever- Celynne had it coming to her. She didn't know why she had it coming to her, but she did. Not waiting around to see her cry, to see her break down, she half-walked, half-ran from the library, somewhat upset, but mostly just empty.
She needed to take a walk, clear her head- and maybe give Celynne a little breathing room. With a frustrated grunt, Ami headed towards her common room to find Leo and maybe an apple, or something. It wouldn't be the last time she'd see Celynne, of course, but she knew that it would be a rough and rocky path back to friendship, if they ever decided to have a go at that again.

Exit a visibly distrubed Ami.
