Study Buddies

Before classes, Eloise wished to get a headstart on her studies. She knew that this year she wanted to make a good first impression and to excel in all of her classes and studies. Pulling multiple books on spells from the shelves, she browses, but soon grows tired of scanning titles. There were possibly thousands of books in the library, not including the restricted section. Some of these would just have to wait.

Finding an empty table, she opens Achievements in Charming, flipping past the first couple of pages. The title pages and copyright pages were not important to her. She first wished to find out the achievement of others so that she could try to do the same, if not excel and achieve above those.

The sounds of flipping pages and books hitting tables sounded throughout the library. Every now and again the subtle sound of footsteps would echo throughout the room as a student wandered among the many shelves, searching for books. Blinking, Eloise looks up from her book. The library was more occupied by other students than she'd expected. Although, now that she thought about it, she wasn't sure why she was expecting the cliche to be a reality. It was Hogwarts, after all, and so far she hadn't met a student who didn't wish to be caught up with their studies.

Donny was just minding his own business. Scanning through countless books about weird warlocks, potions, the Salem witch trials- which he hated to think about- and finally one about Quidditch, his favorite topic. He picked up the book, it was a special edition about the Chudley cannons, and he thought-why not? For once he wasn't lazily studying, wishing he hadn't been in the library. He flipped open the book, one of the few that wasn't covered in thick layers of dust, it was fairly new. He found a seat next to a table, but not quite at the table as he migrated to the corner of the room. There was only one or two people, one a girl who he didn't recognize, but one who looked relatively nice.

He took one look at her short brown hair and her Gryffindor robes. Maybe he could talk to her, maybe not? He closed his book reluctantly, thinking a little socializing could break through the dust. He fixed his glasses and slowly walked up to her, his book still clutched at his side for he never really knew how things would go. "So, You planning on going to the Blossom fest?" he asked her awkwardly, thinking about what could come out of his failed attempt...

Eloise looks up from her book, giving the boy who'd approached her a warm smile. "I'm hoping so. But, you know" she gestures towards the books on the table. "I'm trying to get ahead in my studies. But maybe I can make time." In all honesty, she'd only heard about the festival once on the train ride to the school, and since had completely forgotten about it.

"Oh, and uh, I'm Eloise." She took note of his Hufflepuff robes. She hadn't gotten a chance to talk to many people from other houses. Or people from her own house, for that matter. She was always in the library, poring over books. Maybe she was overworking herself. Perhaps she deserved a little time off. But what would she even do?

"So what are you reading?" She gestures towards the book that the boy is holding. It looked slightly larger than the average book, but wasn't quite so large that it surpassed any of the text books required at Hogwarts. Those were all still sitting in her dormitory, most likely still open on her bed, to the latest page she was brushing up on. She made a mental note to put those away when she went to bed tonight.

Donny furrowed and eyebrow, kind of shocked that someone finally had the time to talk to him. "Er... yeah, I'm reading, Chudley Cannons: A guide to their fame." he read, looking back up at her with a grin. "Oh... and i'm Donny!" he said, shuffling around as he spoke to her, quite taller than he was. He noticed that she was quite a sharp, independent person from her looks. She apparently loved to study, so much so that she hadn't even gotten to the ball yet. "I don't really like to read... or, study or anything much, but I was quite bored." he said sheepishly, he'd never had much time for reading, or studying, but once and a while he didn't mind it.

"So... what do you do? You know, other than study?" he said, smirking and looking up at her fully now. She wasn't that sophisticated he supposed, but time and time again he'd found himself reading other people by their appearances. He set his book down at the table next to him, finally then seating himself and waiting for an answer from Eloise. He'd been trying to collect a group of friends ever since his first week here at Hogwarts, and he found it was good to be social...

"Oh! Well, I draw sometimes. I enjoy reading, but like, chapter books. Not textbooks. And I write stories sometimes." Eloise didn't typically tell people in Bath about her stories because they all found it odd that she wrote such stories as she did at her young age.

"I like exploring things too. Just the excitement of it all, you know?" Eloise still was not one hundred percent sure about the boundaries and where she was and wasn't allowed in the school. She'd eventually figure it out, once she was settled in and comfortable in her classes and her surroundings.

"What about you? What do you like to do?" It was nice to have a steady conversation with someone at the school. That had yet to happen with more than one person. She'd spent most of her time at the school alone so far. It was nice to have somebody to talk to. Although, when classes began, she would be forced to talk to her classmates. Maybe then she'd be sick of talking, but right now she was truly enjoying herself.

"And that's totally cool, you know? Everyone has their own thing. Studying isn't yours." She already found that she liked talking to Donny. Maybe they could become closer friends later on in the year. Hopefully they had classes together. That way she'd have a familiar face in the classroom with her.

Donny was happy as he settled himself in with talking to Eloise. "Well... I love to explore, and well, I like to collect things!" he said, pulling out a shiny golden card. "I've started collecting chocolate frog cards, and I've already got two mythics!" he exclaimed, pulling out his Albus Dumbledore card. "I've also got Rowena Ravenclaw as well... but I save her for my books!" he said, laughing a bit at his inner nerdieness. "Do you collect anything?" he asked her. "You know, cards, badges...anything?" he continued, nodding with all of the options.

He knew he loved to collect things. It was always the awesome effect afterwards he'd gotten it that he valued. Seeing all of your new and old items, shiny and old, each with their own good memories attached. Like when he bought his very first card. It was a sad day for him, and once he found some spare change in the train compartment, he bought his card, lightening his whole day. He looked up at Eloise, she seemed like a good candidate to be his friend once in a while. He'd only made a few friends, and so far they were mostly in the best category.

Eloise ponders for a minute. She collected a variety of different things. It now just came down to what ones wouldn't freak him out or drive him away. So that left dolls out of the question. Eloise loved dolls, ever since she was a child she was obsessed with them. Now she liked to keep them around for display. She hadn't brought any with her, though, thankfully. She only hoped that her little cousins weren't playing with them and taking them off the shelves back at home in her bedroom.

"Hmmm.. I do. I have quite a large amount of collectible figurines. What about you? Do you collect anything other than chocolate frog cards?" Eloise hadn't yet had the chance to try a chocolate frog. Of course, they were sold on the trolley on the Hogwarts Express, but she had been so anxious and excited to arrive that when the trolley made its rounds she didn't have an appetite.

Eloise closes her book, making sure to memorize what page she left off on. Maybe she could take this book back with her when she left. But she wasn't thinking about leaving quite yet. She was enjoying talking to Donny, especially since the talking seemed to come easy to both of them now that they were past the awkward "hello's."

Donny pondered a minute. He knew that he used to collect a lot of things back in the muggle world. He looked back up at Eloise, smiling to try and stall as he thought about what to say next. "Er... I used to collect old badges and stuff!" he said, remembering all of the enchanted badges he'd collected from his grandfather. He looked in his pockets thinking he'd brought at least one, but it wasn't so. "So...hear about what happened last year at the ball?" he asked, bringing up the blossom ball once more. He didn't think that drama fit Eloise's personality very much, but first conversations seemed quite awkward for Donny most of the time strictly speaking.

He'd only just found out that there was fire and a prank involved at last years indecent, and that did make him quite nervous about the whole, fun aspect of social events like these. He was quite excited though, the fact that he had even more of a chance to make likely friends. He thought about the punch, and the supposed flavor changing food that would be prepared by the house elves. He snapped back into focus, realizing that she was still there...

Eloise frowned. She hadn't anything about the blossom ball other than the fact that they were having such a gathering. "I hate to say I haven't." Donny had piqued her curiosity. What had happened at last year's ball? It obviously wasn't good, if she was able to tell anything from how he was speaking.

She planned on going, that is, if she had free time apart from homework and studying. But people said that she would have a lot of that while at Hogwarts. Free time came by much more than expected. Or so she was told. Most likely, though, she would be able to make it to the ball. Which meant that she had to pick out an outfit for it.

Eloise hadn't always been very interested in dresses, but more recently she felt herself growing a liking to them. They weren't as awful as she used to believe. It would be fun to pick one out, but it would be even better if she went with friends. However, she didn't know if any of the people she'd talked to so far were close enough to go shopping with, let alone if they were even going to the ball.

Donny bit his tongue, his thoughts and possible questions overtaking his facial expressions as he looked quite odd as he pondered. He knew gossip wasn't the right path for this conversation. "Well..do you like the outdoors, you know...hanging out in a tree, swimming in the creek?" he added, his finger in a position that signified his notions. He didn't think that hanging out in the library could be all that fun...right? There were book, lots of books sure, but what about the noise. That was one thing that he always found quite scarce when he lingered in the library, it was the center of nothingness, unless of course you count the numerous whispers and rumors that would fly around about him or the person next to him.

Donny was getting quite bored. He needed to find something to do rather than talk about interests, common or not all day. The sun was bright, and the trees were creating crumbling shadows in the shade of the grounds. But... here he was, talking to someone he hoped to be hid friend one day. He really did understand how hard it was now a days, trying to find common interests without hopping along the popular bandwagon. He just hoped he wasn't boring the poor student to death by now...
