Ross would never find himself in the library for over an hour on a perfectly good Thursday afternoon. As much as he enjoyed getting lost within a good mystery novel, he would much rather take it back to his own little cramped room and read it in peace without feeling as if he was being judged by everyone. There were many other things he would rather be doing after a class, such as kicking back and relaxing or pressing random students for answers to questions that did not need to be asked.

Luckily for him, for once the library contained one of the things that he did in fact desire to do. Ever since the meeting he had had with 'Team Howard' he had felt an ever-growing sense of motivation begin developing inside of him to complete the task he had offered to complete. It had seemed easy enough when he had agreed to it. After all, there were plenty of people who were star students in their subjects. How hard could it possibly be to find someone who was good at transfiguration?

As it turned out, annoyingly hard. After several classes of transfiguration with only seeing confused looks on his peers' faces when the teacher spoke and even more confused looks when he asked questions about the limits of transfiguration. It seemed no second years could truly grasp transfiguration.

He could not help but think that perhaps he was just not cut out for this task- but no. He was a MASTER detective. There was no way this could get in the way. So then it came to him: what if he was only asking the wrong questions? After all, if he could not FIND someone who was decent at transfiguration, then maybe someone KNEW someone who was decent at transfiguration. So then the boy began asking around- every table, every year. At first he turned up with no results, but slowly and surely he began to hear a name repeat itself.

Illowy Magnard

He had never heard of the student, but he had not heard of a lot of things. He was not very good at keeping up to date with the news. In fact, he had not heard of the situation he had just recently been roped into until a student approached him. but still, it was clear the girl had to know her stuff a decent amount if that many people associated her with the word transfiguration.

He had to learn quite a bit about her to understand where she might be, but with some tips he realized all he had to look for was brown, wavy locks and signature black marks on her. It seemed easy enough as soon as he was given a few key locations where she chose to spend her time, but once again it proved to be difficult. He had jotted the places in his notes along with other information on the girl, but after he had turned up from place to place he had to scratch more and more off the list.

And that was how he ended up in the library, standing uncomfortably by the door with journal in hand. He glanced up and down, looking at the tables he could see. He saw students of all shapes and sizes, but nothing seemed entirely recognizable until his eyes froze on a student. All he could see was wavy brown hair, but it was his best shot. Ignoring all of the social precautions he would normally take, he became dead set on solving the mystery.

He walked directly towards the table, circling around and taking a seat right in front of her. He noticed the black marks on her face and her eyes- another important detail people had pointed out to him. This had to be her... right?

"Illowy, right?" he inquired, feeling the thrill build up inside of his gut. He had always wanted to use a line like that- it made him feel like he was truly part of a mystery novel.

It wasn't exactly a common occurrence for someone to be seeking out Illowy; if anything it was down right rare. But with enough conviction it wasn't exactly impossible to track down the hiding places of this little creature of habit. Just as she spent many afternoons, the girl was tucked away in the library, her school robes done away with for the day now that lessons were done, and pouring over one of several texts she'd collected for this trip to the library. Some to do with hags, others to do with potions and transfiguration, others consulted lycanthropy. An add assortment of tomes, but all serving the same purpose for her.

Illowy wasn't under any disillusion that, with the right identifiers, she was fairly easy to notice. The most annoying, frustrating common one over the last year had been the inky black, marbled scars on her neck and cheek from when Slytherin had been attacked and cursed the year prior; a mystery she was still working to resolve. Beyond that, the girl was small in frame and stature, with long, dark waves, ghostly pale eyes and fair skin; the contrast of such features didn't exactly do favors for her approachability. Not to mention it wasn't exactly in her nature to come off as particularly warm or friendly to most people. However it was plain she'd grow into a fine beauty one day if she escaped her curse.

From the corner of her eye, she caught a movement coming around her table and sitting across from her; though she thought nothing of it at first. After all, this was a library. What did catch her all guard was the voice of a young lad she didn't know, calling her by name. Pale eyes flickered from her work to him, looking him up and down for a moment as her hand reached to close the notebook to her left, "Um... aye?"

What in the world could this boy want? To the best of her knowledge, he wasn't from her house, and she couldn't think of why anyone might come looking for her by name. Unless possibly Kyle was up to no good again and beat the kid up and was coming to her to tattle on him. He certainly looked like the kind of kid her cousin might target. Though the kid looked perfectly fine to her, so what other reason could he possibly have for hunting her down, "What?"

I was told I was dangerous. When I asked why, they said, "Because you don't need anyone." That's when I smiled.

Though he knew it was her, he felt comfortable at the reaffirmation that he had chosen the correct person. There was always a nagging thought in the back of his mind that made him wonder that what if he was wrong. Still, he could not let his anxieties get in the way. It was not every day he was capable of having an investigation like this right at his fingertips, and now all of his hard work was finally going to pay off.

He laid his journal in front of him, turning the page to the most recently written-in one. It was almost a finished journal- it unsettled him. He had been using it since the year prior. It was odd to see all of the pages nearly filled up in contrast to when he had just got the journal. Still, he felt it was a symbol of how far he came and the experience itself felt like proof of it as well. Glancing down at his notes, he began his 'investigation'. Any introduction he had originally planned to give was instantly thrown to the side as he jumped right into desiring answers.

"So, I heard you're all good at transfiguration and such, right?" he inquired despite knowing the answer. He had to, of course. Everyone had told him she was.

He paused, leaving room for her to reply. He had a strangely naïve view that if someone was approached in the library and randomly asked who they are without any other introduction, they would be happy to tell him anything. Still, he needed these answers.

"I gotta know the limits and all that. Like.. I dunno, let's say someone wanted to change their hair, eyes, and stuff. Is that a thing people can y'know.. do at the same time? Or could someone else a transfiguration charm on someone else to do that? How many charms can be on someone at once? How long does it take to wear off?" he bombarded her with questions, but instead of a hasty, fast approach he used to take he was now talking slowly.

He had almost definitely rehearsed this in the mirror multiple times. He wanted the answers, and right now his strategy was to catch her off guard enough to get those answers.

The lad seemed quite pleased with himself when she confirmed her identify to him, wasting no time opening his own journal as he startled his babbling.
"So, I heard you're all good at transfiguration and such, right?"
A strange opener... people didn't often come to her for advice in classes, "Aye, pretty good, I guess." so perhaps she downplayed it a little. She was a year ahead in transfiguration, but it seemed the lad already knew that as he began word-vomiting question after question at her, hardly giving her time between to answer him.

With a look of confusion on her face, she waited for some level of explanation as to what was going on. After all, none of these questions felt even remotely relevant to the subject. Maybe the lad was confused? Was he mistaking his charms class questions for transfiguration? Even then, she'd be of help there since she was a year ahead in charms as well, but still. Poor lad must not have very good marks if he's gone through this much trouble to hunt himself down an impromptu tutor. At the very least, he could have introduced himself to her.

All the same, he seemed quite confident in his questions, and resolute to get his answered. Rubbing her face a little, the snake began, "Well... firstly, lad, you're painfully confused. Transfiguration is changing objects from one form to another. Not simply changing its colour. Secondly, who are you and what is this even for? Are you with the Headliner or something?" that seemed the most rational assumption besides him simply being an incredibly confused student, what with all the question he'd had lined up at the ready for her.

He was glad she bothered to confirm his beliefs. It said something about her attitude to him at least. If she had lied, this would have been an entirely different story. He would have had to find some motivation or proof that she was telling the truth, or he would probably just keep pushing to be fair. He was never the type to let lies get him down or anything for that matter. He once got a boy to apologize to him just by annoying him.

What he did not expect in return for his long list of questions was questions from her. He felt it would be obvious that he was an investigator, but then again perhaps his simple robes were not enough to display that. He was caught off guard to say the least, and it showed. His eyes widened and his cheeks reddened as instantly he realized things were not going his way. Still, he attempted to keep his calm despite the fact it was slowly slipping from him.

"The headliner? Nonono, I dunno much 'bout writing! Don't think I've ever touched a newspaper in my life."

he glanced at his journal and realized the newspaper about dhampirs that he had shoved inside of it was sticking out. He had allowed it to do so for the aesthetic, but it was rather clear that he had just openly contradicted himself and made himself less trustworthy.

"Someone handed me that one 'cause they wanted me to read it. Other than that, none!" he clarified.

His hasty reasoning would likely make him seem more suspicious to most people, but that thought did not seem to hit Ross in the head. Hey, wasn't he supposed to be the detective here? Why was she asking questions? He took a deep breath, regaining his thoughts.

"but erm.. I'm Ross. Ross Stephens. I dunno much 'bout it, could you tell me?"

Genius. An outstanding recovery. He truly was an excellent detective with wonderful social skills. Where would the world be without him?

It had been said on more then one occasion that Illowy's eyes had the effect of making one feel as though she were looking through a person instead of looking at them. She had a sharp tongue and a flimsy filter to soften the blow of whatever she said what she thought; especially if she were annoyed. The last lad that dared disturb her while she was working wound up being used as target practice for her flippendo, not that she actually hit him. It had mostly been as a scare tactic. Poor fella, in retrospect she figured she'd taken the punishment for such a mild sin a bit too far, but at least it had given her peace from another similar altercation for a time.

She seemed to stun him for a second when she dared to question him back. His cheeks flushed red, fumbling to keep him calm and confident air while he bumbled through his explanation. The older girl simply raised a brow at him, pale eyes flicking down the the paper tucked away in his journal and back up to him again as he scrambled for his next explanation, "Uh-huh..." she mused breathily, hardly convinced.

If she were being frank, Illowy was positive her best friend's rat was a bigger threat this this boy - Ross Stephens, as he finally introduced himself. However, that didn't excuse him from his odd behavior.

She stared at him a minute or two longer, mauling over whether she wanted to scare the boy off so she might get back to work, gather or things and leave, or humor him. The first sounded like an awful lot of energy she didn't feel like dealing with today. After all, it was Thursdays and Thursday were the worst. Such was the day that the Thick Golden Potion, a glorified bandaid for the Slytherins' affliction, began to wear off and the pain of the curse ebbed back to the front of her mind. Just as well, the second option meant leaving the sanctuary that was the library, and she still had work to do... best to humor him and get it over with, she figured.

With an exasperated sigh, the snake peak her tongued to moisten her lips as she closed the text she'd been working one before granting him a look of amusement. Thin hands folded themselves on the table before she spoke, "Today is hardly the day to try to be messin' about with me." she warned, "So ye'best listen."

Shaking a bit of hair from her eyes, she began, "If yer wanting to do something as simple as changin' yer hair or eye colour, then use Crinus Muto or Colorvaria, just don't be stupid and get yerself hurt before you've actually learned it proper. If ye cast it right, it ought to hold until ye use the counter, which is Reparifarge. How many ye can cast on yerself depends on yer own competence." the girl explained, rushing slightly... mostly to amuse herself and see if Ross could keep up between her Irish accent and the new information, "If yer wanting to change yerself into an entirely different person, yer better off just using a Polyjuice Potion instead of Transfiguration." Illowy offered a knowing smirk, narrowing her ghostly hues slightly, "Which is forbidden for yer class because its an upper level potion and ye'd definitely end up just hurtin' yerself. And anything else concerting changing appearances with Transfiguration is well beyond yer caliber anyway so there's not much point in telling you about it." she finally finished.

Straightening herself slightly, the upperclassmen sat back in her chair and crossed her eyes, "Satisfied? Or have ye further questions?"

The threat stuck with him and Ross immediately shut his yap. While he had not planned on doing anything but listening, he had an internal feeling that if he showed even a sign of having a word to say he would find himself turned into a toad or set aflame- only one of which he had experienced, but still he felt he would not live to go through either.

And so that was what he did, he listened. He felt a bit stung by her assumption that he would want to change his appearance, but he certainly did not take it personally and was absolutely not going to correct her. At first he wanted to correct her, but it soon dawned upon him that he was practically all set with the knowledge he was being given. Correcting her would only lead to less answers and a bruise on his head, so instead he kept listening.

While the spell names seemed to just fly right over his head, he could not help but feel interested in what she was saying. While this was no more of a mystery to him, perhaps one day he would attempt to contact her when he could find himself in the mental state to comprehend names and strange words. It was always fascinating to listen to someone who knew what they were talking about ramble.

Overall, he was entirely lost to say the least and the blank expression on his face proved it. Thoughts were rushing through his mind, but if one was to look in his eyes they would likely be able to see his singular braincell rattling about. As she finished speaking, Ross was dumbfounded.

But shockingly enough, he had the information he needed.

It took him a moment to fully reboot as she sat back in her chair, but soon an idea hit him like a brick in the back of the head. If that was below their grade level- of course- it all made sense!

"That's it!" he suddenly exclaimed before recalling it was a library, his cheeks reddening by the second. "I mean... o' course." he uncomfortably pushed himself out of his seat, realizing this had not gone as he had planned whatsoever. Uncomfortably glancing back and fourth, he closed his journal and scooped it up. "have a.. erm.. good day, ma'am."

And the little rat boy scurried out of the door.
