Of all the absurd things that Jackson Valentine had done during his tenure at Hogwarts, this had to have been the most provocative of his recent exploits. Unbelievably, the normally stoic and reserved First Year was scribbling away furiously in an almost trance-like frenzy, the curve of his pencil smoothing a caress upon his delicate drawing pad. The subject of his fascination? Well, a woman of course.

Wasn't it always a woman that stole the hearts of wandering men?

By the design so intimately intended, one could infer that she was reasonably pretty, though her appearance had not been captured at one of the most flattering of moments. A scowl was etched across the face of the mystery girl on the canvas, details springing to life the annoyance she felt in the moment; annoyance at what would remain an enigma.

It was all Valentine could muster to recall her outrage, her intensity. He reciprocated those emotions with a passion, one he had not found within himself for a long time ever since his early days at Hogwarts. His cheeks were flushed with a bright red, the fruits of his effort piling on the table in a neat stack of sketched portraits of this girl.

Whoever she was, she must've been important; or at least, important to him.

Scarlett was back in the library.

A simple statement, if it weren't for the fact that she didn't often go to the library. She wasn't one to pour over books or research by pulling dusty old volumes off equally dusty old shelves. She preferred to go over her notes in the lesson, or ask a friend for help or simply wing the assignment. But, of course, that method wouldn't help her forever.

She had started to visit the library more regularly in a quest to get her grades up from a P to an A, and an A to an E (the O was still so far away). Herbology books would be hurriedly checked out with a smile and a wave to the librarian. History of Magic titles would be pulled out of their slots and brought with her. Transfiguration textbooks would pile around the girl as she took notes and read and read and read.

It had done quite a lot to improve her schoolwork, though she was finding it incredibly hard to balance a social life, proper mental health, good grades and all of the chaotic going-ons at Hogwarts. Occasionally, she would see a P on her Herbology assignment, but the D's didn't come regularly anymore, much to her relief. She wasn't too bothered about studying - she was just taking it a little more serious than she had before. Now, her average grade was an A, which she was fairly proud of.

She was back in the library to return some books and have a bit of a break by not checking any out, when she spotted the Jackson kid from the trainwreck. She remembered that he had been on fire and Elena had managed to quench the flames, but Scarlett's Extinguo had failed. She felt bad for not helping out successfully, but at the end of the day, Jackson wasn't dead so that was a start. She wandered over and caught sight of Jackson scribbling away avidly. Odd. Maybe she should check on him, to see what he was doing and make sure the paper was alright. Wood was precious.

"She's pretty," remarked Scarlett as she appeared almost like a ghost behind Jackson. The girl was indeed pretty with straight braided hair and an intense scowl. "Your drawing skills aren't half-bad either. Who is she?"

Who is she?

Valentine wasn't the sort to object when approached. He wouldn't pass on a well-mannered conversation, and sometimes even went along with maliciously intended ones just to see how they would play out. However, there were times when his patience waned, mostly as a result of his own overthinking. This time, in particular, it was because he was embarrassed.

Who wouldn't be upon being caught with dozens of sketches of the same girl? One might have assumed he had an obsession. It was natural, though, right? What with all the hormones kicking in at the tender age of eleven when boys first began to gain their attraction for the opposite gender. Or perhaps it was something else entirely.

He turned in surprise, immediately recognizing the face that had come up alongside his table.

"Hi Scarlett," he began. He knew her from the Gryffindor Quidditch team, as would many who attended the events. Quidditch players were something of mini-celebrities in the school. "T-This is no one."

Okay, that was a very poor attempt at a fabricated lie. He had to try harder.

"I mean- it's no one important. You haven't seen her before, right? She doesn't exist."

Maybe he was just sketching the bust of a character he had conceptualized. Maybe he was just going insane.

There were...quite a lot of drawings. All of the exact same girl with the exact same expression with the exact same hair and the exact same features. In all honesty, Scarlett found it quite unnerving. It could have been a real girl, a real student, or he could just have been practising art. The latter would've been a lot better in Scarlett's opinion. She didn't appreciate boys obsessively sketching girls. Creepier implications - consciously or not - usually crept it when this happened. Scarlett had to make sure that wasn't the case.

"Hello," said Scarlett curtly. "No one? Well, a person can't be no one, can they? Unless they don't exist. Is this someone you're drawing from your imagination or a real person?"

Scarlett didn't believe a word he said. From the stutter, from his tone and his general vibe, she had a strong feeling she was being lied to. "I don't like fibs, by the way," added in Scarlett, as Jackson continued. From what Scarlett had seen from his behaviour in the train...she knew virtually nothing about him. Now, she was meeting him properly, and first impressions weren't going so well.

Okay maybe he was just a first-year, and his intentions weren't that bad. But her first impression of him had had her mind jumping to the conclusion that he was being stalker-ish and ergo, Scarlett had treated him with a rather cold front. "Ah, so she isn't no one!" said Scarlett victoriously, at Valentine's next lie. She hushed her voice and looked around furtively for signs she would be shushed by the librarian. "I think you're lying. I think she does exist. So I'll ask you again - who is she?"
