Ashley looked out a window in the Library. The bare branches of ancient trees thrashed violently in the growing wind. A storm was coming. The gloomy sky was filled to the brim with looming dark grey clouds, threatening to dump barrels of icy water down at any moment. Ashley shivered and turned away from the window and back to her pile of homework. She spun a pencil between her fingers, biting her lip. She quickly scribbled in several answers to questions before turning and staring out the window again. The first few drops of rain began to fall, slowly at first and then faster and faster until the world was a blur of flying droplets.
Ashley let her long mane of red hair out of it's loose braid and straightened her thick glasses. She couldn't concentrate. She didn't know why. But whenever she tried to read a page about origins of spells or write a paragraph on brewing a potion, her mind wandered away, and it didn't seem to want to come back. Ashley sighed and crumpled a ruined piece of parchment. It made a crinkling noise that was a great deal louder than Ashley had intended, and her cheeks reddened slightly. But crumpling felt good. Scowling, Ashley threw the crumpled parchment into a trash can and made her way back over to her table. She had to concentrate. She had to. But what she really wanted was a distraction. She had been working all day, and she should continue to do so. But then again . . . she had been working all day. And it was nearly three-thirty in the afternoon. Ashley continued this back and forth argument in her head. She was an overachiever, she knew. But was there something wrong with that?
Ashley was so deep in thought that when a voice came from behind her, she jumped slightly, dumping a small pile of parchment on the floor.
"Darn it," Ashley grumbled as she bent down to pick up the fallen parchment. She turned around in her seat to see who was there.

One of the things the young Slytherin enjoyed most about the library was the chance to people watch. Sarah loved to do it, loved to try and guess what was going on in people’s lives - whether it be in the hushed whispered shared between friends or the slight furrow of someones brow. Every action gave her an insight. After watching a pair of slightly older students failed attempts at flirting, her gaze had drifted to a red-headed girl sat at the table to her right. She looked restless, eyes constantly moving back to the window she sat beside instead of on the work she was likely trying to do.

She’d stare at the outside for a few minutes at a time before letting her focus shift back to the desk she was sat at as if she was about to try to go back to her schoolwork. It didn’t seem to be working. The girl looked to be mindlessly staring at the parchment in front of her, as if hoping words would materialise on it. It was something Sarah had unfortunately realised didn’t work and she opened her mouth to tell the red-headed girl as much.

“You know, staring at-“ the young Slytherin started, stopping herself mid-sentence when the girl she was speaking to partially jumped out of her skin. Sarah knew she could be intimidating, but she’d not realised it had gotten quite to the level of making the younger years throw their supplies all over the library floor. It caused a light frown to settle upon her features for a moment, as she bent down to grab a stray piece of parchment which had landed just before her feet.

“Sorry, I didn’t mean to startle you,” She said, handing the almost blank sheet back to her. The Slytherin offered the girl a soft smile, one she hoped looked friendly enough. “Although I now realise that sneaking up on someone when they’re in their own world couldn’t really have warranted any other response,” she said. Her words were accompanied by a light chuckle as she glanced around the area of the library they were in. It was fairly quiet, a few students dotted around with their heads in books, others sat in small groups talking quietly amongst themselves. She looked back at the girl once more before taking the seat beside her, with an air of confidence she’d mastered years ago.

“I’m Sarah, and you look like you’re fed up,” She said bluntly, letting her gaze move between parchment and the girls eyes. She offered the girl another smile, this one holding a different edge - mischief.

Ashlyn walked into the library feeling rather tired. Of course, she had expected "magical boarding school", as she liked to call it, to be tiring, but bloody hell! 'This school was most definitely not made for insomniacs', she thought to herself. She let out a small chuckle as she thought of what her father would say.
Ah yes, dear old dad. They had always had an awkward relationship back home, but now, now he had more time. Time which he could devote to work. Time which he chose to devote to work. To most people, their relationship would seem rather odd. From afar, it simply looked like neither of them wanted anything to do with the other, but it was actually quite the opposite.
Of course, they loved each other, they were family. They just never really acted like a family. Ashlyn had learned long ago not to build strong bonds with people. 'They'll only ever slow you down, she thought. At this, she shook her head frantically. "No, no, NO. No more of this. New year. New school. New people. New you.", she said to herself, over and over again. She slightly nodded in satisfaction as she turned to the bookshelf, looking for something that would entertain her
She continued on, looking at the many titles. The library seemed to have everything; from books on slaying ferocious beasts to cheesy romance novels. She continued to look for a bit before hearing some chatter not far from where she was standing. She peered around the corner of the shelf where she saw two girls talking; one with bright green hair, who she new to be Sarah Light....house, was it? She looked at the other girl; red-orange hair and pale skin. Not feeling very confident, she walked over to the girls and gave a small, awkward smile. "H-hi... I-I-I'm A-Ashlyn!"

“I’m Sarah, and you look like you’re fed up,” A girl stood behind Ashley, smiling. She looked slightly older than Ashley was, maybe a second year, and had long green hair.
Ashley smiled back, tucking her red hair behind one ear. "I am, yeah." Remembering her manners, she quickly added, "Oh, and I'm Ashley. Nice to meet you." Ashley finished gathering up her pile of parchment and set it carefully in the middle of the table, where it was unlikely to be knocked over or dropped.
Ashley sat in her chair awkwardly. She wasn't exactly good with people. She was a self-labeled introvert, and proud of it. Well, not exactly proud, but what could she do about it? When she was around other people, her mind tended to freeze, and all she could think of to say were lame things like nice weather today and do you have any pets, and so, how's school going?. And those topics rarely lead to an interesting conversation. Also, the weather was terrible today, so there went one of Ashley's go-to lines.
I've gotta say something, Ashley thought frantically. She couldn't just sit there, looking at her feet.
Finally, she looked up, straightening her (already straight) glasses and brushing off her (completely pristine) jeans. "Crazy weather today, huh? The rain is really . . . heavy." Ashley mentally slapped herself on the forehead. She used the weather one! Of all the stupid things to say . . .
Before she could beat herself up too much, another voice, not Sarah's, came from behind them. "H-hi... I-I-I'm A-Ashlyn!" Ashley turned. A girl, about her own age, with hazel eyes and long, fiery hair, was standing there. She looked nervous, something Ashley could relate to. "Hi, Ashlyn. My name is Ashley and . . . wow, our names are weirdly similar." Ashley mentally slapped her forehead again. What she wouldn't give to be able to talk like a freakin' normal person. "Um . . . do you wanna sit with us?" Ashley asked Ashlyn.
