For Errand- Operation: Secret Santa

Nustled away towards the rear of the library, Ethen was quietly sitting and searching his mind for inspiration. He had never taken part in a secret santa before and wanted to make sure he did something unique. But that was easier said than done. With little information on his...victim... Ethen had to scour his mind for some semblance of an idea. He had procured a healthy amount of supplies that he had no doubt would suffice for whatever creation he cobbled together but he still needed the idea.

Ethen spread his varied supplies across the small table he had conquered and peered blankly at them. He knew that Atlas was to meet him there any moment and hoped that perhaps she would have a better idea of what to do. Everything that popped into Ethen's head seemed glorious enough but likely far beyond his crafting ability. Such as a full suit of armor. He had no doubts that a suit of armor could be useful for any student but as he looked at his limited tools and supplies he decided that such a grand creation was a bit beyond his repetoire of skills. What wasn't though was sewing. He had learned from his mother and gotten quite good at the skill as he frequently needed to mend his own clothing from some antic out in the bush.

But as his mind continued to whirl and ponder he slowly began to formulate his idea. He wasn't quite sure if he would have the talent enough for the project but he thought there was no harm in trying. Rustling up some soft black cloth, Ethen began slowly cutting out a myriad of shapes. He left some extra material on each cut he did to ensure he would have space enough to correct. He was sure that it wouldn't be as easy as it was in his head but slowly the shapes began to form. It was the first step in an arduous task but his excitement grew with each snip.

After getting the needed shapes, the true challenge began. Grabbing a needle and black thread, Ethen began slowly and carefully working the needle through the bits of cloth. Occasionally he would scan the library for Atlas but knew she would be there any moment and his momentary distractions seemed to always result in him accidentally poking himself with the needle. So he shifted his attention back to the task at hand. There was much to sew and he didn't want to rush his way through the project. He hoped his victim would like it but if he was able to pull it off, he felt as though he would be proud of himself regardless.

Each time Ethen plunged the needle and thread through the cloth he had to make sure the fabric was taking on the shape he hoped. He was still only begining the project but thus far it seemed as though he might actually be able to pull it off. With a growing smile, Ethen continued his sewing, only occasionaly cursing as he skewed his finger.

It didn’t take long for Atlas to locate her boyfriend. The boy was huddled in the corner of the library seemingly encapsulated by whatever it was he was making. They had agreed earlier that they would spend the day after classes making sure to get their Secret Santa gifts made. Atlas wasn’t exactly the best craftsman and tended to pride herself more on the ability to take things apart, but she wanted to make sure she was able to produce a gift that would be nice for her secret recipient.

With only a slight knowledge of her recipient, Atlas had decided to keep the gift related to the passion that they shared. Beyond her knowledge that the recipient took part in the school sports, Atlas would have been lost in figuring out what to make them. It still seemed like a potentially daunting task but Atlas was just happy to spend some time with Ethen, regardless of the gifts they made.

Creeping up behind the boy, Atlas lowered her head until her mouth was just a few inches from his ear. “ABOOOGAH!” Atlas announced suddenly, trying her best to somewhat remain quiet in the library in her attempt to startle the focused boy. To apologize for any fright, Atlas gave him a quick hug before taking a seat beside him. “Well, are you sure you grabbed enough things,” Atlas said with a slight chuckle. It seemed like Ethen had went on a supply raid with everything sprawled out across the table.

Her eyes scanned the table to see if it had what she would need. She had asked Ethen to make sure he picked up some jewelry supplies but she was also well aware that the boy tended to forget what he was doing if left to his own devices. The mere fact that he wasn’t just sitting there having a snack seemed like it was a job well done. But sure enough, amidst a pile of fabric, there lay a myriad of metallic pieces and chains that she would be able to use. “Well Tebo, I think you did a good job so far… What are you making over there? And- when did you learn to sew?” Atlas inquired with genuine curiosity.

In all her time with the boy, she had never once seen him sew anything. No matter how tattered or ragged his clothes became, he did nothing to mend them so it seemed like a curious skill for him to have. But his focus and the quick and nimble movements of the needle told her that this was not his first time wielding a needle and thread.

“Okay… First thing’s first,” Atlas muttered half to herself. Sifting through several delicate chains, Atlas scooped one out and measured it around her own neck as a test. “This should do well,” she nodded gleefully. Clearing a slight spot on the table to begin her crafting, Atlas began scooping up a myriad of small metal pieces and beads, unsure exactly what she would need. But she quickly began to feel more excited about the endeavor as she looked at all of her pieces. There wasn’t a clear picture in her head quite yet but she could feel one coming together as she peered down at the collection of pieces.

Encapsulated by his sewing, slowly Ethen’s attempts to spot Atlas had subsided and he remained focused on not messing up his stitches. A sudden and well executed ‘ABOOOGAH’ quickly snapped Ethen out of his focus as he felt his very soul lurch. The startling noise and proximity made his fingers slip and he ended up poking himself with the needle. Mumbling a quiet curse to himself and shaking his hand, he felt familiar arms wrap around him. Despite the irritation of poking himself with the needle, he quickly smiled at the familiar presence.

“Well I wasn’t sure what I might need...Besides, you can never have too many options,” he smiled confidently as he peered over the pile of random crafting materials. Slowly but surely the pieces of cloth he had assembled were taking shape. They were still flat without any sort of filling but that would be his final step and he had a way to go. Much of the larger aspects of the project were finished by the time Atlas had joined him but it was the smaller, more intricate pieces that would be the real challenge.

A smile crested his face as Atlas began to inquire about his sudden sewing skills. In truth, he had learned the skill very young but he rarely had the motivation to actually use it. “I am full of surprises Atlas, I guess you will just have to stick around. Who knows what sorts of power I am hiding,” Ethen replied with a mysterious wiggling of his fingers. “I am a master with a needle and thread!” He added perhaps more confidently than his skills deserved.

As he expected, the girl began collecting all of the random jewelry pieces he had collected for her. He wasn’t sure what she planned to make but he was interested to see the creation. Making jewelry sounded too complicated for Ethen but as he continued sewing, he realized he hadn’t picked something much easier. In his head making a stuffed animal seemed straight forward but it required considerably more planning than he anticipated to get all of the shapes he needed or at least hoped to make.

After finishing with most of the black fabric, Ethen rustled through what remained on the table and found a light tan fabric that could serve for the face and paws of the stuffed creature. Slowly cutting out the shapes he would need proved challenging and he knew it wouldn’t be absolutely perfect, but as before he made sure to cut extra fabric just in case. “If I lose a finger doing this,” Ethen said in between cuts, “You can keep it.” Smiling up to Atlas for a moment, he watched as she studied the girl sifted through her own materials.

It took considerable time but slowly the little face and feet for the stuffed animal looked complete. Chuckling to himself about the funny appearance, Ethen attached them to the larger body. Towards the base of the creature, he had left the fabric open. “Now, I must give it life...muahaha!” He laughed maniacally as he grabbed some stuffing that he had ‘borrowed’ from a pillow. Slowly he began packing the empty body of the stuffed animal. The once flat creation quickly began to plump up and take shape looking far better than he would have expected.

When the stuffed animal looked adequately stuffed, Ethen sewed up the back and did some touch up work to make sure much of the extra fabric would be cleared away. Quite proud of his little creation, Ethen held it up for Atlas to see. “Look love, I made a Niffler,” he smiled before again looking at its curious little face. It was the first stuffed animal he had made before and he was quite proud, hoping that his victim would like the little creation.

Quietly pleased with startling the boy, she knew better than to push her luck. As much as she enjoyed scarring Ethen, she knew that he was nice about scarring her back. His cleverness for spooking was significant and she had to be careful that she did not make him feel as though he had to terrify her back. So settling down beside him, she quickly diverted her focus to the pile and all of the work that still had to get done.

She couldn’t help but laugh as Ethen declared himself a master of sewing. She wasn’t sure about that but she could tell that he was making a stuffed animal of some kind. It seemed like a difficult project to undertake and she wondered if he would be able to pull it off. “You know if that turns out good, you are going to owe me one too,” she teased with a warm smile. Even if it turned out horrid, she was pretty sure she would still end up wanting one.

After selecting her chain as the base, it was now all about decorating it. She had decided to go with a Quidditch-themed necklace which seemed simple in her head, but she didn’t exactly know were to start. Seeing little silver beads, Atlas began to figure out how to do it. Grabbing one of the small paint kits off the table, Atlas scooped over a few of the shining orbs. Carefully, Atlas began painting them from the silver to a single red one with two dark, nearly black, balls. Giving them a moment to dry, Atlas watched Ethen a moment trying to figure out what he was making. Without any sort of stuffing it just looked like a sad pelt but she kept herself from snickering at his work.

Once dry, Atlas took the red ball with already had a tiny metal hook to attach it to a chain. Placing it at the center, Atlas looped the hook through the chain opening before pressing the hook against the table to clamp it down. With the darker balls, she placed one on either side a bit higher on the necklace and clamped them down just the same. Happy with the little creation, Atlas gave an appraising nod and got ready for the next bit. Finding little silver circles that she believed were supposed to be earrings, Atlas decided they looked a bit like Quidditch hoops.

Finding six in total, Atlas hooked the circular earrings onto the chain and clamped the ear wires down so that the little hoops would remain on the necklace. They worked seamlessly and the necklace was quickly taking shape. But she know it was missing something. Peering over the small bit of jewelry, Atlas knew what it was. Finding a tiny silver bead, Atlas quickly painted it yellow. In the pile of miscellaneous beads, she also found a few that looked like tiny wings. On the left side of the chain above the three hoops, Atlas attached the small yellow orb with a tiny wing on either side to make a little snitch. She believed no Quidditch necklace would have been complete without one!

Hearing Ethen boasting about his creation, Atlas glanced over and a smile widened. “That is adorable Tebo! Maybe you are a master craftsman after all,” she said warmly. “But if this who witch thing doesn’t work out, I think I might have a good career as a jeweler on the horizon,” Atlas teased with a laugh as she carefully held out the little necklace she had created. She hoped her partner would like it and was surprisingly proud about how well it turned out with all of Ethen’s makeshift pieces.
