Ami felt... old. Mature. The summer had brought a wave of life lessons to her life and she felt properly wizened by all of them. She had learned what it meant to be a good friend, what love was, what heartbreak felt like... she'd felt the joy of watching Hufflepuff win the match against Durmstrang, and she'd endured the heart-wrenching awkwardness of sharing a tent with her ex-best friend at the time. And then summer camp ended, and she was caught up in the whirl of preparing for her fourth year at Hogwarts and spending as much time with her younger brother as she could before she was shipped off to Hogwarts once more.
September came and went by in a blur; she got in a fight, she made up with Scott and got her best friend in the entire world back, and she studied in the library on the weekends... what was happening to her? She remembered a time where she had lamented about her age and seniority to a group of eager children, all younger than her, and now... well, it seemed that it had only gotten worse.
The fourth year was sitting at a table in the corner of a library, completely and utterly alone. Her various textbooks, pencils, and parchment scrolls were scattered across the tabletop, although her focus and attention seemed to be primarily on a single notebook in front of her, which she was currently scribbling furiously in. Pausing from her frantic scrawling, Ami finally lifted her head and glanced around the library. It was relatively quiet and empty at this time of day, as Ami had a rare free period at the moment, while most other students were in classes.
Catching sight of a familiar head of prefect-ly hair, Ami stood up, trying to wave down Jack as nonchalantly as possible. "Psst, hey Warren!" she whisper-shouted, waving her hands frantically. "Warren, get your ass over here..."
She may not have been as smart as the other students in her year, but she was by no means dumb. She'd witnessed a certain Hufflepuff keeper plant a big one on Mr. Warren after Hufflepuff had defeated Durmstrang, and shortly thereafter, both of them had resigned from the team. It was odd, even if they both had logical reasons for their respective departures, but Ami still hadn't had the chance to track down Jack and give him a stern talking-to. After all, Ami was nothing if not overly protective of her friends.
"Warren," she was stiffly, almost coldly as she nodded at him to take a seat. Shifting her things to the side, she leaned forward slightly as she interlaced her fingers under her chin. "We need to talk. About Willow."

The Library. The place where childhood dreams come to hang themselves. It's stale, moldy, and has a distinct feeling of utter despondency. What sane individual would ever come to this place with the use of their own free will. Gross. But alas, Jack had found himself in this hell hole, devoid of any comfort or entertainment. As he nonchalantly ran his thumb across the spines of the shelved books he would never force himself to read. 'The Trials and Tribulations of the Muggle Based Conspiracy' was the book that he had found under his hand when Jack's attention was drawn by the faintest of 'psst's' that cut through the occasional cough and the soft turning of pages. Jack would never tell anybody this, but sometimes in his mind, the library sounded like the ocean. Strange thing to think, he knew that much, but the dragging of page against page reminded him of water against the sand of a beach. Even with that imagery, he still hated the library. It only took a moment to recognize the fact that somebody was 'psst'ing at him. It wasn't just a somebody, but rather, a particular somebody!
Jack hadn't had much interaction with Ami Procoppio, but he did know that she was the reason he had been pulled out that shithole abyss beneath the Hufflepuff common room floor. He never said thank you to the older Hufflepuff, but never felt the need. Most of his thank-yous came in the form of a nod or something similar. Saying the actual words meant that he probably owed something to the recipient of his thanks. Pride can also be the damnedest thing sometimes. Procoppio's not so subtle attempts were responded to with a slight exhalation as the Prefect turned to look at the Fourth year. Out of all of the options he had available to him, this one was probably least likely to cause a fight. With a resigned air, the prefect stepped up to the table and set down the book labeled 'Trials and Tribulations of Muggle Based Conspiracy'. "Procoppio." Was all the boy had to say in response to his own last name. Like a cool teacher, Warren twisted a chair around and plopped down in it backward. "'Ight, watchya' want, A.P?" resting his arms against the back of the chair, Jack raised on eyebrow quizzically at her. Of course, he still looked completely uninterested. It while looking like he didn't give a damn about anything, the boy still managed to rock his classic shit-eating grin. And before anybody asks, it ain't magic. Only pure bravado, or at least it was until Ami brought up the subject of Willow. Not the conversation he was expecting... "Uh... What 'bout Willow? Did she do somethin' annoyingly friendly again?" The boy rested his chin down on his arms and huffed. "Actually, scratch that. There are too many times to count where she's being Hufflepuff's Ray Of Sunshine." It wasn't like Jack had anything against Willow's sweet personality. Infact, he kind of loved it. It always made his day better, seeing her smile. Not that he would tell anyone. It just made him annoyed she really embodied the whole hufflepuffness while Jack didn't really fit into the whole Hufflepuff identity.

Ami resisted the urge to flip the table onto Warren as he took a seat, as cocky and arrogant as ever. Why was he always so smug all the time? Was it because he knew that she'd accidentally broken his ribs back in March? Or because he'd seen her reduced to a heap of grumbling over a simple Charms essay? Maybe she should've made more of an effort to get to know the prefect after she had dragged his sorry ass out from under the floor, but life had happened, and she had hardly even gotten to see the ex-Quidditch player after the Durmstrang match in London. Now, with the boy sitting down in front of her, Ami couldn't help but wonder why she hadn't made the effort. Frankly, she felt that the two radiated the same don't-give-a-shit energy, which was probably problematic for a prefect, but still...
Shrugging off her thoughts and tuning in to the nonsense that was spouting from Warren's mouth, the corner of her lip quirked upward as she heard her new nickname. Huh, A.P... no one had come up with that one before, and it actually didn't sound half bad. But she bristled at Warren's seemingly bad attitude towards Willow's positive reputation, which only confused her. Would he rather date a delinquent? Clearing her throat uncomfortably, Ami relaxed slightly in her seat. "Well, JW," she said solemnly, examining her fingernails casually. "It has come to my attention that you and Will are... er, romantically involved." Fixing the young prefect with a scathing glare, she slowly raised an eyebrow, letting the silence sink in. "Now, as her self-appointed guardian angel, I have to warn you... this could end very badly for you. Because let me just inform you, right off the bat: Will has a literal army at her back that will tear you to pieces should you do anything - and I mean anything - to harm her in the slightest.
"Now, I'm sure you're a swell fellow, because Will would never date a chump. But I'm just here to give a friendly warning... a little advice from one Hufflepuff to another. There will be some serious repercussions if something happens to your girlfriend." Her serious expression melted off of her face, however, as she smiled gently at the prefect in front of her. "But on another note..." Clearly her throat uncomfortably, Ami glanced at her interlaced hands now resting on the table. "I'm, uh... I'm sorry. About... the common room thing? I don't know if anyone told you, but uh... I accidentally broke a lot of your bones. I mean, you were unconscious, but still... I swear I didn't mean it, but yeah. Sorry 'bout that."

There wasn't any expectation for Ami to 'connect' with Jack on some level. Making personal relationships wasn't a strong suit for him, anyway. Jack tilted his head as there was a slight lull in the conversation, and his eyes narrowed as the boy proceeded to think. Shocking, I know. There wasn't much about Procoppio that Warren knew. He knew that she was on the quidditch team, but after he had left. From what people could assume about the two, there might be considerable overlap in personalities. Ah, but things do seem to take precedence over them having the chance to get to know one another. Of course, that was the main reason to a distinct feeling of awkwardness in the young prefect's chest. He had the chance but never actually took the opportunity. Making friends is hard. Hard and Scary.
Reinforcing his iron stubbornness, he shook his head side to side before focusing back on what Ami had to say. Surprise, surprise, the girl started with a threat. There was some comfort in the fact that this was going to be leading to a more aggressive end. Jack's ability to handle aggression was leaps and bounds ahead of being able to speak calmly and intelligently. There wasn't a fantastic grasp of adult conversations that involved interpersonal relationships in Jack's mind just yet. As Ami's words reached his ear, he couldn't help but laugh out. Jack didn't have the forethought to stifle his little giggle. The grin he wore only expanded, and in an attempt to save face, Mr. Warren looked away and covered his mouth. Just for good measure, he faked a cough or two. Honestly, the boy didn't realize until maybe a minute ago that Willow even knew Ami. He would never vocalize that assumption, for if he did, who knows what type of rampage the girl would take off on. "I can promise ya' that I would never do anything to hurt, Willow. If I'm goin' to be honest with ya', when she's mad, she scares me." After the statement, the boy ran a hand through his messy brown hair. Also apparently, there was the assumption that Willow doesn't date chumps? Jack knew he wasn't a chump, but did that imply that Ami might have thought that? The boy raised an eyebrow but kept his fat mouth shut.
Scratching at the back of his neck, Jack nearly fell out of his chair in surprise when the next few words spewed forth from the older girl's lips. If there was a mug of water nearby, Jack would've taken a sip just so he could spit it back out! That right there ladies and gentlemen is what you call a one-eighty. "Naw, no- there isn't a need ta; say sorry." All he could do was laugh aloud as he spoke. "From what I could tell, ya' saved me. Plus it isn't like I've never had a few broken bones. I mean how in the world do you think I got this?" The prefect, while still grinning, lifted his hand up to point at his awesome face scar! " And this!" rolling up the sleeve of his yellow robes, he decided to show off the scar on his right arm, just below his elbow. "I got this un' while tryin' to climb up my parent's bar! So ya' don't even have to sweat it!"

Ami raised an eyebrow as Warren had the audacity to laugh at her threat, and she paused slightly, wondering if she had sought out the wrong Jack Warren by accident. Were her threats really so tame and empty that it warranted Warren laughing at her? But when he admitted that Anderson could be, well, scary... she couldn't help but agree, and she chuckled quietly in agreement. At least he knew exactly who he was dating- while Will was all sunshine and daisies on the surface, everyone had a dark side. She nodded curtly in approval as Jack ran a hand through his hair, satisfied that her message had gotten across effectively and that it had been received well.
But the Hufflepuff prefect seemed to be completely caught off guard by her apology. She was beginning to realize that she tended to have that effect on people, even her closest friends. Apparently, not everyone's brains were gyroscopes, spinning in every possible direction at once. Regardless of however random the topic of the basement fire seemed to be, Warren still went along with it, to her relief. And while his accent wasn't nearly as bad as Quinn's, he was still entertaining to listen to, and she almost missed when he started rolling up his sleeve.
"Woah, woah, woah, we're in a public space, JW..." she said, turning her head and blocking Jack's body with her hands. Finally realizing that he wasn't, in fact, stripping naked in the middle of the library, she relaxed and leaned forward to examine the exposed scar on his arm and his face. "Woah..." she said, grinning wolfishly. "Cool. Wait, I have some too!"
Pushing her chair back from the table, Ami stood up as she immediately went back on her no-stripping rule, pulling her hoodie up and over her head, dumping it on the floor next to her chair as she sat back down. Freezing as she realized that all of her burn scars were exposed under her tank top straps, Ami swallowed slowly as she placed her palms face down on the table in front of her, all of her various scars on display for Jack to see. She desperately hoped that he wouldn't be alarmed by her wildly marred skin, and that she wouldn't scare her new prefect friend away.
"That one's from when I fell out of a tree at my dad's," she explained, pointing to a long, jagged scar running from the base of her thumb to her ring finger. "I tried to grab a branch on the way down, but it was too sharp..." Pointing to a set of three pale lines across the back of her forearm, Ami added, "I got those from a dog. He was huge, man, probably like 60 or 70 pounds... I dunno what that is in kilos, though." There were certainly many more pale white lines, both raised and smooth, across her hands and arms, but she twisted around in her seat gingerly.
With her hair in a ponytail and off her back, whatever wasn't covered by the straps and body of her tank top was fully on display for Jack to see. Her burns scars stretch from shoulder blade to shoulder blade, extending further down her back (not that Jack would be able to see that) and up her neck into her hair. "That's uh..." Swallowing nervously, finding that something was mysteriously caught in her throat, Ami managed to admit, "That's from when someone set me on fire. First year. Hurt like hell." Turning back around to face Jack, she grinned somewhat nervously at the prefect in front of her. "I guess we're scar buddies, then."

Y'know it's kind of cool to have a scar twin. He just completely ignored the fact that Ami thought he was about to start stripping to show off his dopest battle wounds. AP's scars were gnarly too! With a look of awe, Jack leaned in closer to take a good gander at the scars. "Shit, those uns' are metal as fuck. I have no clue how much a pound is in kilos, but 70 is a pretty big number-” Suddenly a thought of his most brutal scars popped into his head, “Oh! You wan’ to see the best scar I have?” There wasn’t even a chance for the older student to answer, before Jack’s shirt was completely over his head.
“Look at tha’!” The prefect pointed at a large scar spanned across the lower left side of his abdomen. The scar seemed rather new, as it was still somewhat pink and raised off of his side. The scar was reminder of the horrible thing that sank it’s inky tendrils deep within his stomach. Just thinking about it made the boy somewhat queasy. The headstrong prefect would never admit it, but that thing scared him to death. No matter how hard Jack tried, he couldn’t prevent himself from reliving the events of that night. His jaw tightened only for a moment, before he quickly continued turning around. “A-an’ this is from ya’ girl, Willow-” Pulling the shirt up above his head, he turned around to show a semi-circular burn scar on the square of his back. “It’s kind of a fun reminder that a cute girl is really bad at aiming, but it’s the thought that counts. She just wanted to save me-” He shrugged, hoping that his quick change of subject would be enough to cover up how weak he truely is. “Pretty cool, huh?”

Indeed, there would be no chance for the older Hufflepuff to respond to Jack's offer to see his "best" scar (what did that even mean? what were the qualities of a good scar?). In what seemed to be a blink of an eye, Ami was suddenly staring at a shirtless boy who was all too excited to show off his battle scars. ...there was probably something a little odd about this whole endeavor, right? She opened her mouth to say something, her eyes quickly darting over to the librarian's desk before staring down Jack's scar, before she shut her gaping maw without saying anything. Whatever, if they were going to be yelled at, they might as well get busted for doing something truly epic, and epic battle stories seemed as good a way to go out as any.
While Ami wouldn't notice Jack's jaw clenching as he revealed his scar, she definitely noticed how fresh this scar seemed compared to all his other ones. And the one on his back... her lips pressed together momentarily while Jack's back was still turned and her eyebrows creased, trying to figure out just what her brain was processing. "Uh... yeah," she agreed half-heartedly, more than a little distracted and preoccupied. "Yeah, very... uh, metal. Yes."
Exhaling sharply, her normal smirk returned to her face and she raised an eyebrow at the prefect. "Might want to put your shirt back on, JW... don't want you accidentally flashing everyone in the library, yeah?" Something about this whole ordeal of them showing off their scars like they were trophies was bothering her, but she couldn't quite put a finger on it.
Something about Jack's abdomen scar reminded her of her own burn scars on her back and shoulders. Because that one must have been from that basement debacle last year- there had been so much blood when Ami had gone down to retrieve the prefect's beaten and battered body, and that was most likely where it had come from. Maybe, despite their many differences, the two were more similar than Ami had originally thought... and maybe it wasn't just because of their swagger and outgoing natures. No, there was something else in there, in both of them, that meant they had both gone through very similar experiences.
And as much as she wanted to figure out just what it was, she wasn't quite ready to scare off her new scar buddy just yet. "Dude, you didn't hear this from me, but... you're pretty baller," Ami said in a confidential tone. "You know, I think Willow's lucky she found a guy like you. And you're lucky to have found her. Maybe both of y'all are lucky."
