A Stroke of Luck
━━━━━━ ◦ ❖ ◦ ━━━━━━
Allie took a deep breath as she entered the large library at Hogwarts. She loved the musky, almost sweet smell of the books that surrounded her. Exhaling softly, Allie glanced around the room, which was even quieter than usual. No one else was there but the Librarian, who waved to Allie. As she waved back, her eyes roamed the many shelves that surrounded her, eagerly searching for a good book to read.
After a little bit of wandering around the Library, Allie settled herself into a large, plush chair that sat in one corner of the Library - the same one she always sat in - with a thick novel in her hands and started to read. Getting lost in the pages of the story, Allie didn't even look up when she heard the creaking noise that signaled the Library doors opening. It took a little while, but finally she realized that there was someone just a few feet away from her.
Shaking herself slightly to get rid of the lazy, sleepy feeling she got after being sucked into a book, Allie's gaze moved up a little and settled on the boy standing in front of her. Smiling once she recognized him, Allie gave a small wave. "Hi Matrix!" she said.
Allie had met Matrix not that long ago, when they had both been wandering around the large castle that was Hogwarts. Hopefully he remembered her, as Matrix had most likely met a lot of other students at Hogwarts already, plus. . . her smile wavered a tiny bit, but not enough to be noted. . . it would be a little awkward if he hadn't. Twisting a lock of hair around one finger, Allie paused for a few seconds then glanced around. "Do you want to sit here?" Allie asked then, noticing that there was only one chair over where the two first years were. "If you want, I can move. . ."

A Stroke of Luck
Matrix would go to the library to return the books he borrowed a few days ago. He had finished the assignments and had no need to have the books any longer. He would then begain to walk around the library. He did not need any more books for studying at the moment, but thought of getting something for his own enjoyment. He would begain walking around the library, and would pass the restricted section. "I wonder what kind of books are in there?" Matrix would say stopping and staring at it for a second. Then he would continue to walk, not wanting to seem suspicious. "It must be something dangerous, if a book would be down right restricted" Matrix would wonder what could be inside them.
When Matrix finished looking through a shelf, he would turn a corner so fast that he almost walked right into a table. Matrix would sigh in relief as he stopped right before he hit it. It was a library, and he needed to be quiet. Not make a racket by hitting a table with full on force. Taking a moment to collect himself, he would look around.
On one side of the table, he saw a girl who looked somewhat familiar. The girl would put down the book and Matrix would instantly recognize the girl. "Hi Allie!" He would wave at her, smiling. He had bumped into her a few days back, and he had not seen her since. She would then offer her seat to him. "No, it's fine" Matrix would reply in a quiet voice. He looked around and saw there where no other chairs avalible exept across the room near a table where two first years seemed to be having a discussion of some sort. Not wanting to disturb them, Matrix would turn back to Allie. "Ill just get a good book to read and be on my way, I guess. Have any sudjestions?" He would ask her.
He would then notice that she was reading a book. "Am I disturbing you?" Matrix would say with a slight realization coming to him. He loved diving into a book, joining the charecters in whatever land they may be. It was sometimes hard to tear yourself away from some of the really good ones.

Matrix smiled back and gave her a small wave. Allie grinned, it was pretty clear he remembered her. . . "No, it's fine," he told her quickly after she offered to move. Setting her book down onto the wooden table top, Allie nodded, with just a hint of relief. The only other table that was open in the Library was a table where two other students were sitting. They hadn't been there when Allie had first sat down, and had most likely arrived when she was busy reading. Turning back to the boy in front of her, Allie caught the end of his sentence. " - and be on my way, I guess. Have any suggestions?" Allie's eyes widened a tiny bit. He had just gotten here and he was leaving? Oh well, she thought. He probably had something more important to do. . . But even so, she asked,
"Are you sure you don't want to sit? It's fine if you do, there's an empty seat here," she pointed to the seat across the table from her and next to where he was standing. "I'd be glad for the company. . ." It was the truth, she supposed. Although Allie had come to the Library to read in peace, she wouldn't mind if someone else sat with her. Then she remembered the other part of Matrix's question.
"Hmm, there are a lot of good books here. . . practically every single one is good," she replied with a quiet laugh. "Although there was one I read just a bit ago. . . I think I have it here, actually." Reaching for the bag she always had with her, Allie dug around for a few seconds until she found the right book, which she pulled out and handed to Matrix.
Allie saw Matrix's gaze fall on the book she had been reading, which was still on the table in between them. He asked her whether he had been disturbing her and Allie gave him a smile as she shook her head. "No, no, not at all!" she exclaimed, a little loudly. Wincing slightly as the other first years turned their heads towards the noise, she blushed and mouthed an apology their way. Then she turned back to Matrix. "Like I said before, I'd be glad for someone to talk to. I'm afraid if I keep reading this I might never stop!" she joked with a sly grin at the Hufflepuff.

A Stroke of Luck
Allie would suddenly ask him if he was sure if he did not want to sit. Matrix would blink, confused a little. She kind of did not answer the question he had just asked. Matrix would ignore this and look at the chair Allie was motioning towards. He would jump back a little. He could of sworn it was not there before. She would then tell him that she wanted some company. To be honest, Matrix was getting very bored, and secretly did hope that she wanted to talk. He liked spending time with other people. He would nod and take a seat.
Allie would then answer his previous question. “So she was not trying to dodge it” Matrix thought. She would hand him a book, and Matrix would receive it. “Thanks a lot” Matrix would say grinning. He would read the title and look at the cover. He would then skim through the blurb. “This sounds interesting. I promise I will return it soon” Matrix would nod and put the book to the side.
When Matrix asked Allie if he was disturbing her, she would say no, but a little to loudly. She would get looks from the other tables and Matrix could not help but laugh a little. “Ok then. I’ll stay” Matrix would say. “I know exactly what you mean. Sometimes a good book can make you forget reality!” Matrix would say with a sly smile of his own. “What genre of books do you like the most?”

Allie watched as Matrix skimmed the back of the book she had handed him and looked up with a pleased expression as he told her the book sounded good. Smiling again, she nodded as he said, “I know exactly what you mean. Sometimes a good book can make you forget reality!” That was exactly what she felt like sometimes, he had put it into words perfectly!
"Yes, I get lost in books a lot. Sometimes I like it though, as it can help me forget all my problems. . . because the ones in books are always so much more dramatic, if you know what I mean." When Matrix asked what type of genre she liked to read best, Allie had to think for a few moments before she came up with what seemed to her like the best answer.
"I think my favorite genre would have to be realistic fiction now. Before coming to Hogwarts I would have said fantasy, but knowing that all this magic is something I will one day be able to do, those books lost a bit of their touch," she admitted. "I mean, I would probably still love to read them, but. . . the realistic fiction for wizards is like fantasy for Muggles." Not knowing if she was making any sense, Allie stopped rambling and asked,
"So, what type do you like best?"

Allie would tell him that her favorite genre was realistic fiction. “Yes...they are fun to read because of how easy it is to relate with them” Allie would then ask him what genre he liked to read. Matrix would think for a moment. “Muggle Fantasy and Science Fiction” Matrix would say “Even though some are the books are actually real in the wizarding world, it’s fun to see what they can imagine is in our world. I love going into a fantasy world that is so different from ours, and some have some wacky interpretations of magic!” Matrix would laugh a little. “Occasionally, I read romance....” Matrix would say, instantly regretting saying that. Some people thought those type of books where weird. “I hope she doesn’t think I am weird...” Matrix would think to himself. “Mythology is kind of cool too. Love learning about different cultures.” Matrix would add on to his favorite list. He would then stop talking, realizing something. “Gosh, I almost said every genre of books!” Matrix would say frowning. “I guess I really don’t have a favorite genre... sorry” He would say, also apologizing for rambling on without giving an actual answer to her question. “ So, did you know about magic before coming to Hogwarts?” Matrix would ask curiously. Even though he had known of his existence, he barely knew anything about it.

Smiling as Matrix started listing all his favorite genres, Allie listened carefully. "Yes, it is a little fun seeing the different ways they think magic works. Most of them don't include wands at all - I can't imagine magic without them!" she told him with a nod, agreeing with what he had said.
“Occasionally, I read romance. . .” Matrix seemed a little embarrassed after saying this, and Allie gave him a small grin. She guessed that most people her age didn't like thinking or reading about stuff like that, they were eleven after all, but she found it slightly interesting, as she had never had a crush herself before.
Shaking her head slightly to jostle the long train of thought that was streaming through her brain, Allie quickly replied to the boy in front of her. "Don't worry, I read romance books too. . . it is just another type of book after all. . . and plus, most books have a little romance in them."
Hoping that made Matrix feel a little better about admitting that, she tilted her head slightly to the side as Matrix listed out a few more genres, naming almost all of them. "It's fine, I like all genres too. . . there are so many it's hard to just choose one! Like choosing a favorite book, or color," she added, thinking about other things where there was so many types it was hard to pick a single one to like the best. Although most people have favorite colors, so maybe that wasn't the best example. I like all of them, really, if rainbow was a color that would have to be my favorite." She then stopped talking, wondering if she had been annoying him with all her opinions.
"So, did you know about magic before coming to Hogwarts?” The Hufflepuff asked her, and Allie tried to stop herself from talking too much again as she answered.
"Yes, both my parents were wizard born, so I grew up knowing a lot about it. My parents used it quite often, and my father works as an Auror, so that was one way I learned about magic. . . how about you?" A lot of people she had met at Hogwarts were muggle born, but she didn't think Matrix had told her if he was or not.

Allie would tell him about her parents. “Your dad is an Auror!?” Matrix would exclaim a little to loudly. Matrix would look over at the table of first years and would be met with shaking heads. This was the second time they where disturbed by them. Matrix would sigh. “Sorry about that...but that is really cool! Did your father ever teach you any cool spells” Matrix would ask curiously, making sure to keep his voice down, not wanting to disturb them a third time.
Allie would then ask him about his parents. “I am a half-blood. My dad works for the ministry in the Care for Magical Creature section. His job is basically to go around the world and try to keep magical creatures from disrupting Muggle life, or to learn about a new creature. That is how I learnt about magic. I spent some time with magical creatures, but my dad never really used his magic in front of me.” Matrix would stop and smile. He would hope that he had not bored Allie with his answer He sometimes got complaints for talking to much. He did not want to lose Allie’s company, because he really did enjoy talking to her. “What is your favorite part about Magic?” Matrix would ask her.

Allie had to laugh a little at Matrix's excitement about her father working as an Auror, and laughed a little more when she saw the disapproving looks he got from the other first years near them. "Sorry," she apologized quickly after, not wanting him to think she was laughing at him in a mean way, which she wasn't. "And yes, my father works as an Auror. . . it isn't as wonderful as you'd think though. He isn't home very often. . . or very much." Allie admitted, her smile fading as she recalled how little she'd been able to see her father after he came home each day, late at night. "I have seen him do a few spells, but I never was able to do one. . . you know, without my wand."
Biting her lip and reaching for a lock of hair to twirl around on her finger, Allie waited for a few moments, hoping Matrix would say something that changed the subject. Luckily, he did, and she listened carefully as he told her about what his father did. When Matrix paused and smiled, Allie tried to smile back as she pushed away the thoughts about her own father from a while ago. "That's really interesting," she told him. Allie wondered what it would be like if one of her parents worked like that.
Making sure her attention didn't slip away like it did sometimes, Allie turned back to Matrix in time to hear his question for her. "My favorite part about magic. . ." she shrugged. "Can 'all of it' be my answer?" She grinned, her usual smile slipping back onto her face, lighting it up. "If not, then I'd have to say it's the fact that it makes everything and anything seem possible." Hoping that was a good enough answer for him, she waited to hear if he'd say what his favorite part was. She liked that they were getting to know each other better, question by question.

Allie would laugh at him and Matrix laugh a little too. Even though he would of been a little nervous and all, he felt happy for some strange reason. “This must be what friendship feels like” He would assume in his head. Suddenly, Allie would apologize to him and he would give her a slightly confused look. He was not sure why she was sorry. Allie would then tell him that her father was not around very much. Some of the joy from her face, slowly seeped away. Matrix would want to say something to comfort her, but he could not think of anything, as his family was always together. “Oh” He would manage. Matrix would tell him about his father to answer her previous question, not sure it was the right idea, but it seemed to work, as she seemed slightly more happy. But the smile she put on still seemed a little weak. He hoped he cheer her up somehow.
Allie would then answer his question about his favorite part about magic. Matrix would smile at her answer, she seemed more happier than before. “I would say the way magic can create things that Muggle’s can only dream off” Matrix would say answering his own question. But I have to agree with you, magic is amazing in every way. Before I came to Hogwarts, I felt that spells where just a way for magic folk to do what Muggle can do, but faster. But it’s so much more than that!” He would say a little exited. “How are your classes so far?” He would ask her, he wanted to keep this conversation going. He enjoyed learning about her, she was one of her closest friends here. Actually, he had only met a very few more than one.
