Perhaps a month or two after the year began. Around when students had gotten comfortable, but not enough to be well seasoned yet.
Thomas had spent hours in the library since his arrival at Hogwarts. He felt as if there was so much to be learned, it was overwhelming. There was history he'd never dreamed of, cultural references he didn't understand, even technology that he'd never encounter unless he'd arrived there! As astounding as all of it was, and as close to information overload the boy trekked, he continued to consume as much knowledge as he could. Tommy wanted to be the best of the best, and it wouldn't happen without dedication. At the moment, though, he was trying to uncover something he'd been wondering since he arrived.
If the house was to be called Ravenclaw, then why was its representative animal the eagle?
For Slytherin, it made some sort of sense. Snakes slithered, he supposed... For Gryffindors, it made half sense, as gryphons were mythical creatures that were half lion. However, Hufflepuffs and Ravenclaws seemed to be the outsiders. As a Ravenclaw himself, however, he wasn't doing much research into Hufflepuff's origins. It wasn't that he didn't care, it was that he cared more about his own house more! It was that simple, really. Thomas continued reading fervently, trying to determine where the eagle came from. Perhaps Rowena Ravenclaw was fond of birds as a whole? Perhaps she was avian-inclined but tired of the associations of her last name? Maybe the eagle was the founder's Patronus? He was familiar enough with the spell, having encountered mentions of it in his readings for other classes. It irked him that he couldn't come up with any concrete answers, and not for the first time since arriving to Hogwarts, Tommy slammed the book he'd been reading shut and sighed.
He leaned back in his chair, rubbing his eyes. The boy's attention span was on its last legs. It was all Thomas could do to not scream; the desire to break the silence in the library was oh-so-tempting. His frustration was written plainly on his face.

• • •Transfiguration. It was always transfiguration that made Sylvie’s brain itch as she tried to get the hang of it all. That and history, of course. It was so precise and required such concentration that something always went wrong with her spells! The young Gryffindor was never one for focus, after all. Still part of her couldn’t possibly allow a failing grade, and to be quite frank, it were as if her grade A’s in the class were sledding down a snowy hill of P’s and D’s. What would her family back home think? Anything less than an O was a blemish on her daughter’s mark. That was surely what mother would say, Sylvie thought as she stood atop her toes to reach a book dedicated to clearing one's mind. She would need that.
It wasn’t long until she’d stacked her books so high they blocked her vision with she walked. Nothing new, but gracious. The material was dreadfully dull. She practically fell asleep just thinking about it, shuffling along through the library, trying now to bump into anything as she made her way to the tables and chairs. As much as she’d love to ask one of her classmates who happened to be better in the art of transfiguration, Sylvie was much too proud to do so. Even if her crappy low marks made it even more clear that she needed just a bit of help. It was only after she’d caught sight of a familiar face that a smile broke out onto hers. She dragged her feet a little faster so she could greet him. “Thomas!” She exclaimed in a hushed tone, peeking around her book stack. They were in the library after all.
Talulah and Sylvie unfortunately didn't talk very much these days despite rooming together, but she and Thomas did! She supposed the girl was busy surfing other crowds. Good for her! Still, it was nice that at least one of the Banes kids stayed in touch with her. "What're you up to?"

Sat beside Thomas and staring intently at a book of is own, Elias was hard at work on a particularly nasty potions essay. The young boy seemed to spend a great portion of his time in the library nowadays as he strived to best Thomas in every subject the two took together... which was all of them seeing as they were first years. Tapping his quill against his chin and taking a deep breath in to prepare himself mentally for the hardship that was about to befall him as he began to write he was suddenly distracted by Thomas's outburst.
"What did you do that for?" He asked the boy, his tone hushed and a tad cold as his thought slipped away from him and he'd have to spend the next twenty minutes searching for it once more. While the two did get along, for the most part, it wasn't a surprise to see Thomas and Elias bickering or arguing in their dorm of a night, often on the verge of physical conflict as their disagreements about who was a better wizard got rather heated. It was most likely due to this that it came as a shock to quite a few people that the boys were even friends at all.
Letting out a sigh of his own and stretching slightly Elias returned to scouring his bock for the piece of information that had occupied his mind just moments prior and was now lost. Just as he had found it again, another distraction arrived in the form of Sylvie. He had met the girl a few times in classes and through Thomas, who seemed to talk to her quite often. Taking the chance to answer for Thomas, Elias spoke again, "We're trying to study." Despite enjoying her company, Elias really did need to make some form of progress on this essay and it seemed as if every time he got remotely close to doing so someone else distracted him. It felt a tad like the world didn't want him to succeed in his mission to pass potions with a higher grade than Thomas. Someone had most definitely cursed him with bad luck.

For Callie the past month or so had been a whirlwind of excitement, wonder and being thrown in the deep end. Almost everything about Hogwarts was tinged in a childlike wonder as things didn't quite feel entirely real. While things were starting to settle down Callie still couldn't quite shake the feeling that she was about to find out she was the victim of an extremely elaborate prank.
What was very and quite painfully real however, was Callie's transfiguration homework. The young girl found the class terrible mind boggling and rather difficult to wrap her head around, consequently leading to her spending more time than usual dedicated to it's study. Such dedication had brought her to the library with every intention of losing herself in the books, despite everything else in her head screaming at her to go take a nap or pester Phel. So after gaining a possession of a couple of books Callie had set off on a quest to locate somewhere to sit, only to notice Thomas, Elias and Sylvie lurking nearby.
Callie weaved her way past a few students towards her three classmates and immediately slid onto a nearby chair after placing the books down. Since Callie had the pleasure of meeting Thomas and Elias on the Hogwarts Express a month or so ago, she'd kept in regular contact with the pair. While Thomas and Elias forever seemed to be at each others throats Callie liked them all the same and found their antics to beat each other at everything incredibly entertaining. It was hard to explain but hearing the two argue in the commons was surprisingly funny. Sylvie on the other hand, Callie had the pleasure of meeting during one of their charms classes and the two got along like a house on fire. Callie opened up her notebook before looking up to the three and giving them a wave coupled with a smile in greeting. "What are you guys studying?" She asked in a hushed tone, considering they were in the library and didn't think her usual loud exclamations would be welcome. "I can't seem to figure out transfiguration..." She mumbled as she looked down at her notes, only to find herself confused and intimidated by her own notes.

"What did you do that for? I did it because I felt like it, idiot." Thomas rolled his eyes at Elias' question. It wasn't exactly the most ingenious of responses, in fact it was pretty awful by most standards, but his brain power had effectively been sapped by the research he'd been doing. He noticed Elias was working on the Potions assignment he'd already finished, and he smiled inwardly. That was another win for Tommy, something he'd be sure to give the other boy trouble for. In fact, he was opening his mouth to tease Elias for having taken so long to complete the assignment, when a familiar voice drew his attention instead."What did you do that for?"
The scowl that had been on Tommy's face before faded considerably upon Sylvie's approach. He hadn't been talking to her as often as he probably should have considering she was like... His best friend. Whoops! Hogwarts was an all-encompassing experience, and it was easy to get swept away in the hustle and bustle of it all. Once again, he opened his mouth to answer, but Elias cut him off. Rude! Thomas shot the boy a glare before looking back at Sylvie. "He's trying to study. I'm actually done with my work, y'know," he scoffed. That statement wasn't entirely true; in fact, he had a History of Magic essay he was putting off at the moment. But Elias didn't have to know he was bluffing. "I'm trying to figure out why Ravenclaw's animal is an eagle and not a raven. It seems kind of stupid, right?" He had no doubt in his mind that Sylvie would agree. She was practical, and not a stuck up pureblood with some grandiose notions of Hogwarts being the greatest institution to ever be created."What're you up to?"
Thomas' attention snapped to Callie as she approached, shrugging. "Just finished my Transfiguration work. This week's assignment is such a bore. I thought I was going to like the class at first, but it just takes so much time.""What are you guys studying?" She asked in a hushed tone, considering they were in the library and didn't think her usual loud exclamations would be welcome. "I can't seem to figure out transfiguration..."

Not even a 'Hello, Sylvie!' or a 'How are you today, Sylvie!'. Oh, the youth of today... She inwardly shook her head, but with the interjection of Thomas her cheeky grin returned with haste. With a wave of her hand she swatted away the attitude she'd received and snorted at Elias. "Oh, blah blah. There's nothin' new, you're always studying." She said. "Books for brains, I think." She gave him a gentle rap on the noggin with her knuckles and then turned to Thomas once more. He'd always been this way. Always interested in how things worked and why things were. It didn't surprise her; his unwillingness to let one oddity be. "But that is kinda weird, huh? Maybe she just liked eagles? They're pretty mighty if you ask me-" She thought about it for a moment longer, but couldn't linger on it too long. A new voice piped up that caught her attention.
"I can't seem to figure out transfiguration..."Callie! One of her favorite Ravenclaws, she'd say. The plucky girl always seemed to have a head for Sylvie's antics and that was something the young wizard could admire. She was bound to be fast friends with someone who had a fire like hers. She lifted up the stack of books she held in her hands before setting them down on the table. "You and me both." It wasn't anything new for Sylvie to be late in doing her assignments. Especially in classes she couldn't grasp. Still, regardless of the speed in which she chose to work, failure was never an option for the girl. She'd kick herself if she continued on with her grades as they were to be quite frank.

Coming to the conclusion that he was not going to be able to get absolutely any of his potions essay completed while surrounded by these... blundering fools, Elias shut his own book. He could always work on it at a later date if that's what it absolutely came to.
Rubbing his head gently where Sylvie had just knocked his noggin, the young Slytherin glanced around as the number of people at the table seemed to grow by the second. Truth be told, he liked each and every one of these people when he wasn't trying to get work done, but, seeing as they had disrupted him, Elias was not only short, but also a tad rude.

"That's an absolute you problem. I finished my transfiguration ages ago. It was easy as anything." The young Ravenclaw said, shooting glares at both Sylvie and Callie. How was it remotely his fault that they could not figure out their homework? Why should he care? If he was in a better mood, Elias would probably realize that the same logic could be applied to his own potions essay, but his head was a tad fuzzy at the moment."I can't seem to figure out transfiguration..."
At least Elias had something up in his brains, it was better than having nothing there like it seemed the others at the table did. Mainly Thomas Baines, he was a complete clown, why did he care at all about something as arbitrary as to why Ravenclaws mascot was an eagle instead of a raven? The mascot was regal and powerful, one of the ultimate birds in Elias' eyes, ravens, on the other hand, he couldn't help but associate with rubbish dumps. Oh well. Thomas was simply an idiot, he wouldn't be telling him that until later on tonight though, when they could brawl in the peace and private of their dorm."Books for brains,"
