The patrol was perfectly standard at the start. Ruby Cazares and Pericles Dralt had done the practical thing and paired up for the night, intending to go about their duties as a duo. They were diligent. Principled. Responsible. Granted, they were also good little friends, and thus they chatted quietly amongst themselves while descending the ever-shifting stairwells. Conversation was light and aimless, until the moment Pericles posed that casual question: Was Ruby going to the Masquerade? Yes, she had a date, only she hadn't settled on something to wear. Hearing this made her partner pause on the spot. His sleepy eyes went wide, aglow with an excitement propriety insisted he try to restrain, though an uncharacteristic impulsion was growing in the pre-teen. "Do you think..." there was a falter as he tried to resist the blurt, but quickly caved. "...could I help you?"

It wasn't at all like Peri to stray from the beaten path, but he seemed seized by a passion. First and foremost, the boy was always eager to help a friend, and his desire to do so was capable of overwhelming his strong due diligence. There was also the factor of his upbringing. Since the day he was old enough to buckle his own belts, his father had tirelessly taught him the importance of presentability. A man's appearance, the nobleman lectured, dictated the foundation of his success. As far as the lad was concerned, a lifetime of learning what fabrics paired best had merely led to a borderline foppish wardrobe. But this was an opportunity to put all of that nonsensical knowledge to good use, to support Ruby in the one way he knew how: by turning to books.

It would only take a matter of minutes, he insisted. The library was Pericles' most favorite haunt, and he nearly had its categories memorized by heart, so he wouldn't need more than a moment to track down what he wished to show her. What harm could a brief detour do? They would be back on task in no time. The bird and snake slipped between the shelves, whispering while they went. Ruby was already in possession of an attractive blue vest. It was simply a matter of arranging an ensemble around it, and the Ravenclaw already had a number of ideas in mind. Pinstripe pants, Pericles insisted, couldn't go out of fashion. Ruby wasn't too keen on the concept of dress shoes with spats, nor heels (which was sensible considering the ill repute of Hogwarts functions), but that was no trouble. The book would offer a better idea on footwear which was both functional and fashionable. Then there came a question which might seem strange, but was asked so innocently, Pericles must not have realized how odd it sounded: "What are your feelings for your date?"

The reaction was reasonable: a blink, a questioning cock of the head, a look which made Pericles' smile turn gentle and apologetic. For all his learned knowledge, notions of romance were still a foreign subject to him. In his first year he had regularly failed to recognize (or perhaps pretended not to notice) any hints of the stuff towards himself. Yet he was slowly starting to understand, if only grazing the concept, and tried to soften his callous question with an explanation. "I ask so that we can create your corsage, of course. Flowers are for more than just décor. They're a message, and also a prime gift to give to the person you're taking. I can think of a few flowers off the top of my head, but we would be better off with a book on their language while we're here."
He'd help in a way which made the experience perfect for his friend. Nothing less would do.

Soon he was sitting cross-legged on the library floor in the light of a Lumos, holding "Folklore and Symbolism of Flowers, Plants and Trees by Ernst and Johanna Lehner, written in nineteen-sixty. It's one of my favorites for floriography." Ruby had been handed a formidable tome on fashionable footwear, on which an absurd amount of information was written. Heeding her description of the feelings she felt for her intended date, a fingertip traced the index, flipping pages this way and that. "What about the red Catchfly? 'Youthful love', falling... no, sorry- perhaps it is too early to use those words. Ah! The Epigaea- Mayflower- for 'budding', as this has only just begun? Budding... happiness? The Crocus resembles youthful gladness. But the fern is a bit broader. 'Fascination, sincerity, magic'... fern corsages are unique and eye-catching, too, in my opinion."

It was a Sunday evening, but far from a normal one. Ruby was still buzzing with excitement and glee from the events of the previous day—she had been asked to the ball by someone she cared about very much. She could hardly process it, even now, and couldn't stop thinking about how lucky she was to be going with someone as incredible as Illowy. She was currently walking alongside Pericles, another friend she enjoyed the company of, and they chattered idly as they made the rounds together of their nightly patrols. In the small gaps in conversation, however, she found her thoughts fondly drifting back to Illowy, and when Pericles asked if Ruby would be going to the Masquerade, she was happy to elaborate, beginning by telling him she had a date but wasn't sure of what to wear.

Her friend offered to help and she indulged him with a grin. “Of course, I'd be delighted to have your assistance.” A little chuckle escaped her as they briskly made their way to the library, slipping into the darkened room. Their eager whispers and light footsteps were the only sounds accompanying the two wanderers, and any apprehension the Slytherin may have had about entering the library after hours slipped away with the progression of their conversation, a childish enthusiasm replacing potential anxieties. She told Pericles about the items of clothing she already had and listened to his responses, nodding along with the assertion about pinstripe trousers and responding to his ideas on shoes.

A question was asked out of the blue about her date—more specifically, how Ruby felt about her. Taken by surprise, she blinked in bafflement, flashing a questioning look at Pericles with her head tilted to one side. “Well…” she began warily, a little concerned about what he would think. She paused while he explained, saying that it could be used for a corsage. She nodded, more at ease now that she understood why he was asking. How did she feel about Illowy? Her blue gaze grew distanced as she reflected, eyes quickly lighting up again, excited to talk about her. “To start with, my date's Illowy. I… feel happy around her, and relaxed too. She makes me feel able to look past the darkness around us—in this school and our lives—and she gives me hope. I feel so real around her, like any pressure just slides away and I can be myself with her. But… I also like her in a way I don't feel about my friends. It's just different, you know? I fancy her—I think that's what it's called. When I'm with her, I feel spellbound, and not at all in a bad way.”

Before long, they ended up on the library floor, flipping through pages. Ruby shuffled slightly closer to Pericles to better see in the light from the spell, a finger tapping idly on the side of the book as she skimmed the pages. “What do you think about something like this?” she asked, pointing to a picture in the book of a pair of shiny black boots, ones that weren't too pointy and didn't have too much of a heel. Pericles presented his own finds and Ruby smiled. “Fern sounds like a good idea, then. What do you reckon would make a nice pairing with it? Do multiple plants build off of the meanings of one another when you combine them…?”

It was a decently quiet evening. One where Robyn had actually decided to stay late on her own accord and look up books that she enjoyed. Of course, in between her own research she would make sure to pull books for the student's had requested for tomorrow. The Assistant Librarians were gone for the night, and it was just her and the books. A perfect night for her.

Of course, she had forgotten one thing and that was a beverage to keep her company for the night. She had to slip out of the library for no more than a few minutes to fetch herself a batch of tea. During this time there were no monsters, hags, evil doers, or mysterious visitors that had slipped in. No, it was just a couple of prefects that wanted to plan for the upcoming ball. By the time Robyn had come back she was unaware of their presence within the shelves. She casted a lazy look over at the Restricted Section and took a few sips of her tea. After deeming it still safe, her eyes returned to the lists in front of her. The best part of being alone this late? Summoning books.

While she did enjoy perusing the shelves and wandering to help students, at the end of the day a girl just wanted to sit down for a bit. This activity was never a problem at this time of night because students weren't supposed to be in the library. Pericles and Ruby were about to find themselves in a new game of Dodgeball but with books. With a wave of her wand, Robyn set to non-verbally summoning four books that happened to whizz right by the Prefects. Pericles barely dodged the first one while Ruby moved out of the way with ease. The second set of books that whizzed past them were dodged just as easily since they had to be prepared this time around. Ruby was so adept at dodging already, that perhaps she would have an even easier time with the inevitable next round.

Robyn stayed blissfully unaware, and the Prefects were now in a game of escaping.
