It had been ages since the two had talked- or perhaps he was being a bit over dramatic. It had been a couple months at most. If it had been up to him, he would have contacted her far sooner; however, it had to be perfect. At first, while he had enjoyed the encounter, he had assumed they would never speak again. It was not until some wise words were exchanged only days before Christmas was it that he even consider that that would not have to be the end of whatever obscure friendship had developed that day.

So he had begun brainstorming for days until finally it hit him. He had written a letter to his parents right away- as in as soon as he got the courage. It was difficult for him, but it was an important task for the materials he replied. A week later he got his reply- a rather sweet one at that, they truly were lovely people- with exactly what he needed contained in a box that came with it. He had been thrilled, but it still was not time yet. He could not just approach the girl. What kind of maniac would do that?

It was not until a crisp, wonderfully freezing Saturday afternoon that he finally saw his chance to take action. He had the materials necessary in a small bag that he now frequently carried with him for the sake of the plan itself on free days. Once again, it had to be perfect. It had been quite a bit of time as well, so he would rather the material itself not get stale. Were the multiple remarks about him carrying around a 'purse' worth it? If this worked out, absolutely. It was convoluted, confusing, and everything he adored as a detective.

He had been wandering the hallways as he frequently did when he saw her iconic hair. It was impossible to miss, she practically radiated radioactive energy. Every time he saw her he wondered if he combed his fingers through her hair he would get some Harley Quinn backstory. It was abnormal- which is why he had dubbed her Toffee in the first place. She was not normal, but he was rather fond of that. She was close to him as she walked, but she did not take notice of him. Now was his chance. He hastily rushed behind one of the suits of armor, kneeling onto one knee and throwing his little brown bag to the side. He unzipped it, using his pointer finger to skim over what was in there.

His journal, his textbooks, the ominous box, his wand- ah! The ominous box.

He carefully removed the ominous box from the bag, but as soon as it was free from its prison he took no precautions. It could stand to get a bit stale and broken up. In fact, he could argue it was always a bit better when it was like that. Would he though? No, mainly due to the fact it was basically a false statement of its own.

He placed the box on the platform the knight he was hiding behind stood on before taking his wand out of the bag as well. He tapped it gently against the platform before pointing directly at the box. He squinted at where the girl was now and where he was before taking action. He drew half of a circle with his wand.

"Depulso" he firmly whispered to the box.

The box must have despised what he had to say, because it went flying. Luckily for him, his aim was well and it hit the back of the girl's leg. Ross let out a chaotic laugh before covering his mouth and pushing himself against the wall. Hopefully she would not see him, and hopefully this was not against the rules.

He hoped she would enjoy what was inside: Toffee. English Toffee to be exact. It took all of his power to hold back from eating any- so he did. He took one small bite out of the corner. It was good, what could he say? After that, he had used his quill and some spare parchment to write a note that he attached to the inside. All it said was Is this Cannibalism? He thought it was hilarious, and hopefully she would too.

Sarah wasn’t the best at making and keeping friends. She was hesitant to trust and reluctant to let anyone else in who might be able to hurt her. The Slytherin had already had to deal with more loss than most her age and her preferred way of ensuring she didn’t lose anyone else was to simply push them away. It was destructive and counter-productive, of course, and she knew that. She felt the emptiness her decision to stay alone left within her more often than not, and over the break, she’d realised just how lonely she’d allowed herself to become. The number of people she considered friends could scarce be counted on her hands, and the number of those who she truly trusted was an even more depressing number.

It was painful, a constant ache inside of her which had grown progressively more deep-set since the day of the accident which had taken away her family. She’d vowed five years ago to never let anyone close enough to hurt her again. But she’d come realise that it was a promise she had to break, she had to let someone in – call it a New Year’s resolution. So, she’d decided that this year would be the year she’d started trying, making an effort with her peers and actually attempt to form a friendship which could last. She just had to find the unfortunate soul who’d be stuck with her.

It was the weekend, and unlike many of the students of Hogwarts, Sarah didn’t have any plans. She’d spent the morning writing a letter to send to her Aunt, wanting to tell her about the muggle novel she’d just read about Anne Shirley and her adventures at Green Gables. Something about the story had hit so close to home, and she’d been desperate to tell someone about it as soon as possible. But she was at a loss for what to do for the rest of the day.

That was how she ended up aimlessly wandering the corridors of the castle, hoping that something interesting might happen to catch the Slytherin’s attention for long enough to occupy her day.

She hummed idly to herself as she walked, fingers spinning her wand in a way which was quickly becoming second nature. She supposed she had Zyk to blame for that, he’d been the reason why she was so intent on learning how to do it in the first place. She passed a few groups of students – Hufflepuffs debating whether the winter or summer was better, Slytherins discussing the Potions homework she herself had been neglecting, and a few Ravenclaws and Gryffindors who were enraptured by an apparently tense game of wizard’s chess.

Sarah walked the corridors without fully paying attention to where exactly she was going. Which was why was caught so off-guard when something hit the back of her leg. She stumbled, immediately irritated that whatever it was that had struck her caused a lapse in the usual grace she moved with. She spun around quickly, hair flying wildly around her shoulders, as the hand which held her wand came up to face whoever it was that had attacked her.

Only, there wasn’t anyone, just a couple of students who were looking at the second year with raised brows and mild curiosity. But she was certain she’d heard laughter. Her eyebrows furrowed as she scanned the corridor quickly, seeing nothing which seemed out of place. She blamed her paranoia on her father who’d spent much of the holidays seemingly sneaking up on the girl to drag her to events she’d wanted nothing more than to avoid.

Eventually, her eyes drew downwards, and landed on the small box just in front of her feet. Curious, she mused, as she slowly lowered her wand and bent to pick it up. The potential that this box could be hexed flitted through her mind, but as she took hold of it, she felt no dark magic. Hesitantly, she opened it, eyes widening when she saw the partially eaten toffee and small note which sat atop it. Is this Cannibalism? Her immediate confusion was quickly overtaken by the memory of that evening in the rehearsal room.

She wanted to be angry – annoyed that her peaceful walk had been interrupted, and irritated that she’d no doubt have a bruise on the back of her leg by tomorrow. But her lips curled, and a bubble of laughter escaped before any negative thoughts could overcome her. Apparently the nickname had stuck. She let her fingers run along the rim of the wooden box for a moment, before another poorly hidden chuckle caught her attention. She looked up and once again glanced around for the source.

“I suppose you think you’re funny,” She said to the corridor, using the most exasperated tone she could muster. The fact that she herself had too been laughing just moments before was one she chose to ignore. She took the sweet out of the box and glanced back down at the small note inside. “Book two in my series of novels: Why Cannibalism is Good for the Soul,” She grinned to herself before taking a bite out of the toffee in her hand. The delighted sound she made afterwards only being half put on for show.

The sudden laughter was as sweet as the toffee he had shoved into his mouth earlier. His shoulders relaxed as thoughts of relief filled his mind. He burned with desire to see her face right now. Something about seeing her caught off guard brought an odd amount of joy to him. He let out another laugh reminiscent of a gremlin at the thought of her face, not bothering to cover his mouth this time. There was something to here that was different than other students, but he did not desire to know how she worked. In fact, it was quite possible that was the difference. He just wanted to experience with her in all honesty, which was a feeling he had not really felt before.

Still, he could not help but feel pride over his accomplishment. All of the planning really did pay off, didn't it? She had to have known it was him, right? He put so much effort into making sure it would all go swell. Sure it was not perfect- as shown by the gigantic bite of toffee already taken out; however, it went smoothly and it was all due to his planning. It brought an unnecessarily large amount of joy to him.

Most of the time, his planning tended to backfire. The amount of times he had driven people nuts through his terrible plans of attempting to get to know them without having to admit 'I'm curious about you' were far more than he would like to admit. He did not think of them much unless it was at night, but the awkward encounters still haunted him. Many people asked him as a child 'what is the worst case scenario?' THAT were the worst case scenario.

But right now, he did not need to focus on any of that. He could not focus on any of that, as he found himself hastily snapped out of his thoughts by a sudden echo down the corridor from an oh so familiar voice. An oh-so familiar voice he had been planning on hearing, at that. The tone sounded exasperated, causing Ross to suddenly feel a slight rush through his nervous system.

He glanced out from the side of the knight, finally satisfying his urge to see her face. He worried it would be judgmental, upset even; however, he was faced with a pleasant surprise. She was happily enjoying the toffee he had given her, despite it being mildly stale. It was nice to know she enjoyed something he had put so much effort into giving her. It was not the object- it was the presentation, after all.

It soon dawned upon him that he would need to make an escape. A memorable escape. This could not just be any old greeting, after all. He was beginning to learn. Carefully thinking through his general knowledge of charms, he finally settled on an idea. His mind only processed what was efficient, not if it was within the rules. Well, he hoped it was within the rules. There were only a couple students in the hallway on a Saturday, and everyone seemed to joke around on Saturdays. Surely it would be fine.

He suddenly ran into the open. " I do think I'm funny. Actually, that was hilarious." he remarked directly to the girl before making a snail shell with his wand. "Fumos!" he exclaimed, causing a large swarm of smoke to appear before them. He ran all the way to where he could peek to the side of a wall so he would not instantly be seen. He gasped for breath due to how fast he had darted to the corner as he heard several students complain over their hindered vision. If he could see, he would notice the rolled eyes of students who were quite exhausted of this charm being casted in the hallway. Part of him desired to cast Ventus to get the smoke out of there quicker, but within seconds it had cleared up. He let out a sigh of relief and smiled, realizing his first successful 'prank' on the girl had gone well.

Sarah was so rarely childish. She’d had to grow up far faster than most children her age, both through experiencing loss and from being her father’s daughter. He didn’t approve of frivolous activities, believing everything you do should be productive to the mind or body or to simply make oneself a more accomplished young woman. When she’d tried to argue that running around the manor playing chase with the house elves was in fact a form of exercise and therefore bettering her body, she’d been sent to her room without dinner for back talking. That had been the last time she’d ran inside the manor.

She never got to be childish, and the wide grin which stretched across her face as she squinted through the smoke to watch Ross’ retreating back, made her realised how much she’d missed it. She blamed her father wholeheartedly for the absence of immaturity within her and felt a spark of anger rise up within her. The sound of laughter echoing down the corridor was enough to push it away - yet another emotion she’d repress to deal with later, never to really get round to it. But the laughter pulled her back to the moment and suddenly she was running after the sound, eager to hear more of it.

As she ran around corners, darting between passing students and hoping beyond anything that she wouldn’t accidentally run head first into a professor leaving their classroom, she silently cursed herself fro wearing a skirt. The material constricted her legs and she knew that trying to catch the boy who had already had a head start to begin with was likely a fools errand. Yet she carried on anyway, shouting quick apologies to a few people she ran particuularly close to as she passed and one of the school ghosts who she ran straight though.

When she became short of breath, she stopped, letting her palms rest against her thighs and huffing out a laugh of her own, even as passing students stared at her as if she was a mad woman. Perhaps I am, she mused, not sure she took it as the insult it would likely mean to be. She knew she’d lost the Hufflepuff by now, and reluctantly admitted defeat, the small box still clasped tightly in her hand. She glanced at it, eyes glinting with mischief as she realised what it meant. “The game is well and truly on,” She muttered to herself, as she circled back towards the dormitories. She had some plotting to do after all.
