first year, first enemy

after spending the morning in one of the study rooms catching up on his coursework, the lanky boy got up to explore the halls before he went cross-eyed from reading the tiny print in the textbooks. bidding farewell to his fellow first years who lounged around the cramped room, basil gave a small wave and quietly shut the oak doors quietly behind him as to not disturb the studious (or rather unstudious) atmosphere. as much as he had hoped, the boy was still unsuccessful in deciphering his brother's hurried scrawl across pages of diagrams and jumble of words. perhaps the library would serve him better, after all, it would hold more information than the well-worn magizoology book his father had gifted him during his most recent birthday. for the past three nights, the boy had snuck the book into his bed along with a light so he could read until the dawn's light peaked through the window and reminded him to get some sleep. the next day, basil would find himself barely keeping himself from falling asleep at his desk, more so in class where he could sneak a few minutes of light sleep in one of the tables towards the back. like a curse, the journal haunted him in both his dreams and the waking world, demanding to be solved. every day the mystery remained, the lower the shadows beneath his soft blue oculars crept down his face. his platinum hair was a tangled mess, looking like frazzled albino pygmypuff rather than hair, having not been brushed in three days. as much as basil wanted to throw the journal away, the guilt of not solving his brother's death and his mother's attempt to wipe the memory from her mind weighed heavy on his soul. so far, basil was alone in his endeavors, too afraid to let anyone in on the secrets that laid between the journal's leather bindings. he preferred it that way, but if he continued on the track to sleepless nights and paranoia, he would find himself in a position similar to his catatonic mother.
the ravenclaw first year hummed to himself as he strolled down the corridors, his brother's journal tucked safely underneath the crook of his arm. sitting for hours on end with his legs criss-crossed and leaning against the wall of the study room made his back and lanky legs ache and feel as if they were stone like the gargoyles he passed along the way through the corridors. wanting to take his mind off of the journal, he searched for an object within the pocket of his blue-trimmed robe, a soft smile touching his lips as he pulled the little object from the folds of his pocket. upon closer inspection, the little minuscule object was an intricate music box with gold inlay and emerald rhinestones. upon hand-cranking the music box, a quiet tune played from inside. amongst the music and his whistling, basil didn't notice footsteps approaching until the music box had been snatched from his hand. the boy's eyes blinked rapidly in surprise, reeling back immediately from the figure in front of him.
"are you paying attention? i said, are you trying to be annoying by playing that...hideous muggle object." the figure sneered, snapping the top of the music box shut with little care.
now that basil slightly recovered from his surprise, he saw another student standing in front of him, draped in a robe with green trim. the other boy was slightly shorter than him with dark hair neatly slicked back and piercing emerald eyes that bore into his own powder blue eyes. before basil could ask for the music box back, the other first year tossed it back without warning. as basil scrambled to catch the box before it shattered on the ground, he could feel the slytherin's eyes on him, glinting with an amusement of sorts.
e-excuse me, i didn't know anyone else was in the halls. i'm sorry if i disturbed you." the ravenclaw stuttered out, holding the music box close to his thin chest. instead of an apology from the other student, basil only heard a snicker escape the slytherin whose shoe was now planted firmly on the journal's leather face. "be careful! it's...it was my brother's."" basil pleaded, dreading the curiosity glittering in the boy's eyes.[/font]

first year, first enemy
the sound of several pairs of shoes scuffed against the stone floors of the corridor, mixed in with hushed whispers and snickering. a trio of first year students ambled down the halls, the tallest being a boy in the middle with ebony hair and eyes that rivaled emeralds. one side of his mouth was curled upwards in a smirk as he glanced over at the snickering slytherin to his left who had muttered a rather rude remark about the poor flustered gryffindor girl in charms who had stuttered during the incantation and accidentally fused her shoelaces together. the ravenclaw who walked to the right of icarus joined in, covering her mouth with her hand obscured by her cloak in an effort to stifle her giggling.
a melody cut through the trio's laughter accompanied by a whistle that matched the tune. furrowing his brows, icarus motioned with his hand for the other two to peak around the corner. a platinum-haired boy was strolling down the adjacent corridor, a curious little box in his hand. one glance at the ravenclaw boy and it was easy to tell that his mind was preoccupied. he sneered at the blue and silver clad boy wandering down the corridor and turned to the ravenclaw girl, "huh, isn't that the boy who almost fell asleep on you during potions, adelaide? looks like he hasn't slept a wink since."
the ravenclaw girl, now revealed to be adelaide, flushed and huffed stubbornly, "hmph, almost knocked my jar of lionfish spines over. he's always carrying around that stupid journal, he even reads it during class. looks like junk to me, i looked over and couldn't understand a word of it. besides, i think he needs a hairbrush more than that shabby old thing." she remarked, crossing her arms over her chest as she glared at her housemate with narrowed umber eyes.
the mention of the journal piqued icarus' interest, especially if it meant he could use it to toy with the ravenclaw boy. icarus left his spot at the corner of the corridor wall, telling the other two students to linger behind as he approached basil. sauntering down the corridor, icarus could see that the little box was actually a music box and no doubt muggle in origin. there was no magic turning the little knob, but instead the ravenclaw boy had to manually crank it. the figures on the inside of the box moved in a mechanical fashion, unlike most magical objects where they seemed to have a mind of their own. it was playing a tune, no doubt a muggle song as well, which irritated the pureblooded slytherin.
"are you trying to be annoying by playing that...hideous muggle object." icarus remarked bluntly, stepping in front of basil's path with his arms crossed over his chest and his chin tilted up slightly in a superior manner. as the boy drew closer, icarus realized that the ravenclaw was either ignoring him or too preoccupied with the music box to reply to his snide comment. icarus wasn't used to being ignored, especially his sharp-tongued insults. if the boy wouldn't acknowledge his comments, the slytherin would act instead.
icarus snatched the music box right out of basil's outstretched hand, giving it a few tosses up and down with one hand as he watched with amusement as the ravenclaw's eyes fluttered in surprise. "are you paying attention? i said, are you trying to be annoying by playing that...hideous muggle object." icarus sneered, the tune from the music box suddenly cut short as he snapped the top shut. with the tune gone, the corridors were eerily silent except for the scuffle of basil's shoes as he reeled backwards. icarus tossed the music box back with a lazy throw, more interested in the journal that fell to the floor when basil dove for the box.
"e-excuse me, i didn't know anyone else was in the halls. i'm sorry if i disturbed you." the ravenclaw boy stuttered while icarus watched him quickly compose himself, a sneer on his lips. icarus put his shoe on the journal's face, acting as if he was wiping his shoe off on it's surface. he could see the fear in the powder blue eyes of the boy in front of him as basil stuttered again, "be careful! it's...it was my brother's."
curious, the slytherin picked up the journal, letting it dangle by the spine for a moment just so he could taunt the ravenclaw further. "hm, i needed something new to read and it looks like my new book has been delivered ever so kindly by a bumbling bloke." icarus smirked, "i'm sure your brother won't be needing it, seeing as how it was his."
