Sorry this took so long, the coronavirus shut down my university and I had to work on moving out in the meantime D: @Breana Oliveire

After an engaging Potions class, Thomas sat for a moment as the boy next to him (and most folks in the class) began packing up. Often, after a particularly rigorous lecture, the boy needed some time for all of its content to fully sink in. As a result, he was often one of the last few students to leave the room. Belatedly, he began cleaning up his materials, occasionally pausing to double-check his notes from that day's lesson. Potions was remarkably similar in principle to muggle chemistry, a course of study he'd been excited to begin before he was whisked away to Hogwarts. The same academic passion he held prior to his discovery of his wizardry he carried into his new coursework. Throughout most lectures, he was prone to asking many questions, though he always managed to not seem stupid as he did so. Despite being raised practically as a muggle, the extensive extracurricular studying he'd done for his classes almost made him pass as a pure-blood.

In short, Thomas was a nerd. A nerd with high standards for his own academic success.

Some onlookers may have seen him as an elitist. The assessment wasn't far off, and honestly who could blame them for thinking so? His shyness manifested in how he avoided conversation at all costs in the classroom. When anyone, even his partner or his friends, asked for help, he was poor at explaining and easily frustrated when they didn't pick up on it right away. Perhaps most damning was the confidence he seemed to exude: all of his words were measured and he wasn't one to hesitate even slightly in an academic context. Plus, he always seemed to have a smile on his face when answering the Professor's questions. Who even acted like that?

Despite being a fairly infuriating individual to interact within the classroom, Tommy was totally oblivious to his habits. He hummed quietly to himself as he packed up his things, paying little attention to his surroundings. Once done cleaning up his supplies, he made his way to the corridors.

It's okay! Hope that situation got sorted out for you now!!

Today's Potions class definitely wasn't Breana's best work. First of all, she wrote down the homework that was given to them last meeting without checking the details of it. Unfortunately, her excitement got the better of her and she wrote it down without double checking the necessities. Secondly, for some reason her mind was having trouble absorbing the new material. She knew she had some sort of internal troubles of herself to sort out, but she didn't expect it to be that much of a hindrance for her school work. To top all of it of, one student kept shooting their hands up and answering all of the questions in class. Thomas Baines, she remembered, mostly due to the fact that he introduced himself before the flurry of answers steamrolled in the class. He's a Ravenclaw, so it wasn't a pure loss for her, since most of the house points will get into their House anyways. Still, she didn't care for the fact that he answered every single question, without giving the other students a chance.

So of course, Breana thought it would make sense to just talk to the fellow Ravenclaw. She would've done the same mistake if she knew every answer to the question. Maybe just a bit of communication would get this all sorted out well? She packed up all of her stuff, making sure everything she owns is on her person now as she approached the fellow young eagle at the corridors. "Erm... Hello?" She said, politely waving to him. After encountering a good number of students by now, Breana's shyness is slowly melting through the warmth of Hogwarts. "Sorry if I'm interrupting anything." Breana then held out her hand to Thomas. "I'm Breana. Breana Oliveire. I was in your Potions class...?" She said, giving the boy a pause to try to remember her before continuing. "Basically I just wanna ask if.... erm, well, I don't know how to phrase it properly, but uh..." She looked to the side, scratching the back of her head as she tried to piece together the right words. "... Maybe leave some answers... to the rest of us...?" Breana winced, hoping that her words actually came out right. "I-i mean it's great that you've given use points and all, but it ain't fun if someone just takes all of the questions themselves, y'know?"

Everything worked out alright, honestly it was just a hassle more than anything else. :sweatingbullets: @Breana Oliveire

Thomas' mind was so far beyond where he currently stood, zoning out thinking about the homework he'd been assigned and thinking about his next class, that when he was approached he just kept walking. While the boy had no classes to attend for quite some time—Astronomy wasn't until later—there was a quiet corner of the Library with his name on it! Tommy didn't really do leisure unless he was with his friends; they frequently dragged him from his work because, in their opinions, he needed to get out more. His incredibly studious nature was half the reason why he was so enthusiastic and quick to answer in class.
"Erm... Hello?"
The words fell on deaf ears at first, and Tommy kept walking. His head was in the clouds, and he wasn't focusing on his surroundings, much to the probable chagrin of anyone trying to grab his attention.
"Sorry if I'm interrupting anything."
As if it just took Thomas extra long to process, he stopped in his tracks at the second word and turned to meet his fellow student's eyes. He didn't maintain her gaze for long, but despite his fleeting eye contact, his posture remained remarkably confident and self-assured. It just seemed like his focus was everywhere except the conversation at hand as she spoke. He noticed the blue robes they shared—a fellow Ravenclaw, then—and the apologetic tone she employed as she spoke. Still, despite the delay in recognizing she had been addressing him, and his body language potentially indicating that he wasn't paying much attention, Thomas seemed to waste no time in recognizing he had to respond in kind.

"Oh, I'm Thomas Baines," he began, although the requirement of introducing himself before answering any questions left no doubt in his mind that Breana was already aware of his name. It just seemed like the polite thing, introducing oneself when someone offered their name. He listened patiently to Breana's words as she spoke, his expression rather impassive. While his first instinct was to be offended by the accusation that he was an answer-hog of sorts, Thomas was self-aware enough to recognize that the assertion probably wasn't false. He raised his hand quickly and with immense eagerness, to the point that many of his teachers in his time before Hogwarts had to tell him to lay off; they did so in a way not dissimilar to how Breana brought up the issue.

However, this was a fellow student, not a respected figure of authority, and while Thomas' initial spark of anger was quickly stifled, his tone was still mildly defensive as he continued. Not overtly so—he was never particularly expressive unless really riled up—but enough to be discerned if Breana was perceptive to that sort of thing. "Oh, my bad. Sometimes I get a bit carried away... I just raise my hand when the answer comes to mind."

While his statement was up to interpretation, it could easily be perceived as arrogant, and Thomas opened his mouth to ameliorate his situation before shutting it once more. Hopefully, Breana wouldn't pick up on his faux pas, although the boy laid it out fairly openly for someone to see.

Breana pursed her lips as Thomas didn't respond at first. In fact, it took a long, long time for him to register her greeting, but at least he reacted nonetheless. The little girl did notice the faltering eye contact, however. She raised an eyebrow at it at first, but Breana just figured his mind is about what to do during this free period since they just finished up Potions class, so she pressed on. Though for some reason he introduced himself despite her already telling him that she knew his name. "Oookaay... Maybe there's more than the free period that's on this guy's noggin..." Breana thought, her hands intertwined together in a bit of a tense manner. Despite this obviously rough start, she still wanted to confront him about this, lest she'd want to fully stay in the sidelines.

She raised her eyebrow again at him. His statement sounded apologetic, though it sounded as if he was... dismissing her in a way? Still, Breana tried to bear a smile (though with slightly gritted teeth) as she responded. "Heh, yeah I get that, too... 'cause Ravenclaw, duh!" She laughed a bit, trying to have her comment come off as playful. "But, still... Can you.... I dunno, just answer once or twice? or, maybe just answer when you're really sure?" Breana wasn't honestly sure if her advice would be even the best for the situation, but it's still advice at least. She hoped that that part got through the fellow Ravenclaw's mind at least.

@Breana Oliveire Sorry this took so long!

Thomas managed a smile at Breana's joke about Ravenclaws; while initially he'd been somewhat scandalized by the stereotype of being a bookworm, he realized he fell into it easily. Even for his aspirations of bravery and honor, and his envy at his Gryffindor compatriots for their sorting, he'd slowly grown into his placement in Ravenclaw. He didn't resent it anymore, which was progress in its own right, and he was actually starting to enjoy it! With the stereotypes of meek, bookish students came being underestimated, which was a mighty fine quality to have in any sort of altercation. His small stature helped as well.

Getting Thomas' train of thought back on track was always a bit of a mess, but he managed to zone back in as Breana continued. His eyebrows scrunched up a bit as she suggested to maybe lay off on the answer hogging. He struggled to see what he had been doing wrong, particularly because in his perception, he was just doing as the professor instructed. Sure, he answered a lot of the professor's questions, but was it his fault that he was overly-eager?

Probably, but he wasn't going to admit to that.

Instead, his weight shifted from foot to foot as he contemplated what he should respond with. He was never exactly the best with words—the boy grew up accidentally aggravating his peers for crying out loud—but he was aware that making enemies as soon as his first year at Hogwarts was probably in poor form. Not to mention, if he managed to word his response tactfully, the two could even end up friends! Maybe, anyway. Thomas had to actually navigate this massive, hulking steamboat of a conversation carefully into the port of tactfulness before he could nurse any such sentiments.

"Oh, um. Yeah. I'll try to remember that." His tone may have come off a tad dismissive, although that wasn't his intention. It didn't help that Thomas had no intention of apologizing or admitting he was in the wrong—likely because he saw nothing wrong with his actions.

She stared at Thomas, hoping that her absentminded classmate would actually take her rather patient words to his slowly drifting off brain. From her small amount of experience, most people would be understanding and think about her statements. She fiddled with her own fingers, anxious on what Thomas would respond her with. Unfortunately for Breana, she's met with the same sort of "hurry up and let me be" tone from the fellow Ravenclaw. Of course, why was she not surprised. As someone once said, hitting the same rock multiple times and expecting a different result is just insanity.

Right now, Breana's own sanity is withering from hitting this stubborn rock. She still needs her sanity for her other classes, so right now she figured she'd put her tiny foot down. Last time she stood up for herself, it didn't end well. Still, the multiple times of her trying to get through Thomas wore off Breana's patience. She cleared her throat loudly, her arms crossed. She felt like she's ready to bite his head off, but to any outsider, she just looked like an angry puppy with her round steel blue eyes boring into the young boy.

"Okay," She said loudly. So loud that she heard her own words echoing the halls. "E-erhm..." She faltered for a moment, but pushed through. Breana is going on an angry tone and she wants to commit to it."Thomas, listen! All I'm asking is that you... B-BACK OFF on answering." She said. Students are starting to overhear the conversation, unbeknownst to the angry little Ravenclaw. "But judging from your answers to my questions, it's like talking to a smooth stone wall: Pointless." She huffed, feeling cathartic almost with what she did. A small crowd is starting to form around the two. Are they waiting for a fight? A duel with spells? Maybe, but that's the last thing scurrying in Breana's mind.

"Okay."
The boy's attention—something generally fleeting and not easy to grasp—snapped to Breana as she raised her voice. Thomas didn't really understand why she was getting so upset about this encounter. His inability to really empathize with people was probably one of his greatest flaws, he was aware, but unfortunately, self-awareness didn't actually lead to much progress at all. Sure it was the first step, but for someone particularly unaware of how to proceed, it just left the bitter taste of futility in his mouth every time he noticed himself acting callously. It wasn't like he was actively trying to seem dismissive or inconsiderate; Tommy just didn't really have the people skills to come off as otherwise. Plus, as the boy would probably later on realize, he had the tendency to have a rather self-centered perception of his surroundings. His rare moments of selflessness were just that—rare.
Thomas, listen! All I'm asking is that you... B-BACK OFF on answering."
Which is why, of course, Thomas paused for a moment as Breana seemed to get progressively more frustrated with him. His gut reaction was to be angry in turn, to start yelling back, but the small crowd of wizards who were overlooking their come-to-blows made him a bit unsettled. Tommy wasn't comfortable enough with any sorts of spellcasting to defend himself in the event of a magic altercation, and his small frame certainly prevented him from effectively defending himself, so he came to the conclusion that he'd have to fight back with words. Even if it wasn't totally intentional, he often found that he did a pretty good job of making people upset in arguments.
"But judging from your answers to my questions, it's like talking to a smooth stone wall: Pointless."
"Well if it's so pointless, why do you keep doing it?" Thomas' tone was cold and maybe a bit pretentious. He was trying to lay it on a bit thick, in an attempt to get Breana to storm off angrily. Maybe, then, he could be left to his own devices. "Not to be rude, I mean," he began, although it was clear that this time around, he kind of did mean to be rude, "but what do you gain from this? The yelling, I mean." Thomas crossed his arms, assuming something of a defensive posture. His expression was probably the most moved that it had been during their entire conversation; it seemed like the sudden burst of volume had actually gotten under Thomas' skin.

Sorry for the wait! ;w;

"Finally!" She thought, as Thomas finally turned his focus unto the frustrated little girl. She would've raised her hands in the air out of relief if it weren't insulting to Thomas, so she simply crossed her arms for now. The fellow Ravenclaw became the straw that broke Breana's back, so despite the few students gathering and staring at the two, she's determined to get her point across.

Breana was shocked, of course, that Thomas would ask her about her actions. "Wh--" She stammered. "Wh-why?" For some reason, either just from her mind at its endpoint, or just from being overtly frustrated from just merely talking to him, she cracked. Breana suddenly laughed out loud. "'Why?!' He says." She scoffed at her rather nonchalant classmate. "I dunno, Thomas. Maybe I thought, y'know, you'd have the decency to listen to me? Maybe I thought that you'd have some empathy to think about the people you call your classmates, and this little BUGGER RIGHT HERE," She shouted, pointing at herself. "That's telling you what's bloody up!" She side-eyed a couple of students that are starting to murmur as she shouted before looking back at Thomas. Whether they were talking about her going stark raving mad, or how she's making a point across, Breana cares not. At least the corridors were starting to buzz about it. Though, if anyone would have a keen eye, one would notice that she's giving her wand a death grip. This could take a turn for the ugly if this would escalate further.

@Breana Oliveire no worries at all! :D

As Breana's volume seemed to get louder and louder—making her exasperation and irritation with his behavior all the more apparent—Thomas fought hard to keep the anger bubbling in his own chest from emerging. He knew if the two came to blows (or worse, spells) it wouldn't end well, and would probably result in either injury, or worse. Getting in trouble. It was something that the Ravenclaw had avoided up to this point, and he wasn't eager to get told off by a Prefect for his actions, nor was he eager to actually serve a detention.

It was hard, though, to resist the urge to fight back as Breana pressed on, her conviction clearly growing. Thomas' face flushed red, though it was ambiguous whether it was from suppressed anger or mild embarrassment that their argument had garnered spectators. His impassive expression sharpened into a glare, his posture becoming more standoffish than defensive as his arms uncrossed, trying hard to keep his pride intact as he was visibly taken aback by her exclamations.

"Oh, don't worry, I'm listening. In fact, I think everyone in the nation of Scotland is listening, with all your ridiculous bellowing," he began, tone accusatory. Thomas hadn't anticipated the situation get to this level, but his emotions took the reins of his thought process, and he nursed no sentiments of trying to deescalate. Still, he tried to keep himself from similarly shouting, clearly restraining himself as he continued, "Are you seriously this upset about a bloody Potions class? Boohoo, I got called on more than you did, what's got you so cheesed off about it?!"

His voice rose in volume at the end of his question, which destroyed his sought-after illusion of being unbothered. Between that and his drastic change in body language, anyone capable of reading people would be able to tell that he'd been set off. Thomas hadn't noticed Breana's iron grip on her wand, and he had packed his away, so in the event that this altercation escalated further, he'd almost certainly be caught off guard.

Thomas attempted to regain his composure, face still beet red as he spoke with a more resigned, restrained tone. It was clear that he was trying his level best to not make the situation worse, and there was almost a note of defeat in his voice as he said, "For the love of all that is holy, please just leave me alone."

Breana's eyes widened as Thomas practically accused her of blowing things out of proportions. If this were a different day, where the freckled child didn't have a rough time gaining a measly grade in Potions and didn't get off on the wrong side of the bed today, she would've been more gentile, more apologetic even. Unfortunately, fate chose, of all days, for today to push Breana into feral mode. She scoffed, her tanned skin getting a more red hue from her seething anger. "OHO! Well, glad to know you're finally opening your ear sockets, Cap'n Obvious!!" She blurted out. "News flash, ya dolt! If you used the brain cells you used up earlier back in Potions class to actually absorb what I was telling ya, then I wouldn't have to shout to ya like you were in the Himalayas!"

She held up her hand as Thomas continued to her complaining about not getting called in Potions class. "Ah, nononononooooo, lad." Breana laughed mockingly, either she was laughing at herself for still yelling at him in the first place, or if she's laughing at the situation on how all over the place it is in her eyes, no one knows for sure. "The ship sailed off LONG ago, mate. Now it's the fact that you couldn't even have the decency to even pretend to listen to me!" She resounded at him.

She finally exhaled, mostly releasing all of the anger... for now. Breana frowned at Thomas, her voice now softening, though there is a dagger of anger still stabbing in her tone. "Fine... Fine. You wanna be left alone? Alright... I'll leave you alone..." She said, turning around in a huff. "... But then again, you didn't take that advice when I told you the same thing about questions, didn't ya?" and with a quick and precise wave of her wand, she shouted, "Tarantallegra!" towards Thomas, shooting the spell to him.
