Monday 1st February 2021
Sarah was fascinated by magical creatures, she had been since she could remember. It stemmed from her mother, a woman who’d spent years caring for magical creatures before she’d become a mother. Growing up, she’d constantly been round creatures, cats and owls and even a hippogriff on the odd occasion. So she’d been eager to help out with this, if only for the chance it may make her feel closer to her mother. She realised that today of all days that was what she so desperately wanted. February 1st, her birthday, a fact no one at this school had managed to find out, for which she was thankful for. She didn’t like to celebrate it, hadn’t in years, and spending the day looking after a worm suited her just fine.

And that was how she ended up in line to collect her very own flobberworm, along with a dozen other students each with varying degrees of enthusiasm. She had no doubt that the reward was the incentive most of them had required. Once the queue had shortened and she’d reached the front, she was faced with the startling reality of actually having to look after one of the worms - which were considerably larger than she’d thought they would be. Her eyes widened slightly as the worm was passed to her, heavy in her hands which had become coated in a thick slime within the first minute of her handling the creature. Despite her initial excitement, the young Slytherin had already started to slightly regret her decision to volunteer for this particular task.

She was at least grateful that she’d made the wise decision not to bring Nova on this particular adventure, knowing her cat had a tendency to jump at things without much thought. She doubted the flobberworm would put up much of a fight if the ball of fur had left for it, and certainly didn’t care to test her theory. “What exactly am I supposed to do now then?” She asked the worm, shifting it in her hands slightly so she could pull up her sleeves and hopefully avoid them becoming covered in slime.

“How about a name,” She mused, glancing around the corridor she’d just walked into as if fro inspiration. The suit of arms her eyes first fell upon was quickly disregarded at the realisation that a brave knight might be the exact opposite to the creature she held. “I’m sure I can come up with something more original than slime,” She cringed as a string of the stuff fell from her hands. “How about George, or Zebedee, or maybe- Paisley?” She all but shouted the name as her eyes caught sight of a familiar Gryffindor, face breaking out into a grin as she quickly made her way over.

She realised it’d been far too long since she’d spoken to her friend and desperately hoped this might be their chance to catch up. “I see you’ve become the proud mother of a flobberworm as well,” She smiled, as she came to a stop before her. "Do you have any idea what we're supposed to do with them now?"

Paisley thought Hogwarts was weird. A lot of odd things had happened with practically no explanation, and the surprised never ceased. One day it was a new odd spell, another it was a ghost horse, and today it was taking care of flobberworms.

As always, Paisley was right in the center of the fiasco.

She was waiting her turn in line, trying to glance ahead and see what was going on. People were being handed full-sized flobberworms like they were children! She suppressed the urge to laugh as she was handed her's. "Uh-uh thank you?" she stammered, and then walked off to the side.

For a moment she caught sight of a familiar face, but it was gone before she had time to call them over. She turned on her heel and planned to take her worm to...well...where would she take her worm? There weren't any playgrounds at Hogwarts, and that was the only place she could think to take it. Without thinking she started to pace around the halls, holding her worm as she would a child. A very large, slimy child.

All of the sudden there was a shout behind her. Paisley jumped, letting the worm slip out of her grasp and onto the floor. With a gasp she picked it up and glanced around, hoping no one had noticed. Her face burned bright red as she tried to find out who had called her name. Then she realized, it was Sarah!

"Hi! Uh...no. Actually, I was just thinking about where to go, and I've got nothing." she looked down at the slightly-startled flobberworm, who was obviously still recovering from it's near-death experience. "Maybe we could take them to the..." she couldn't think of any worm-friendly places off the top of her head. Certainly not the library or study room. Maybe they could find an old classroom? "What do you think?" she asked Sarah at last.

Sarah’s eyes widened, almost comically, as she saw her friend drop the worm. She wondered whether she’d imagined the way the creature seemed to bounce before Paisley bent to pick it up. Strange things, she concluded as Paisley spoke.

“Of the many rooms Hogwarts does have, they seem to be severely lacking a playground for worms” Sarah mused, the image of the pair of them sitting on swings holding their respective flobberworms momentarily flashing in front of her eyes. It was all so ridiculously impossible, yet here they were. She’d quickly realised that impossible seemed to be a word Hogwarts had chosen to ignore.

“A classroom, perhaps? I’d suggest taking them outside but I’m not sure what sort of temperatures these guys can handle,” She looked down at the creature she was holding as she spoke, studying the way it seemed so calm despite being passed around and in a loud corridor. She only become more curious as the worm appeared to look up at her. She wasn’t sure they had the capacity to understand their surroundings, but it almost looked as though it was appraising her. She shook her head, quickly looking back at up Paisley.

“Honestly, I’d not really been expecting to spend my day like this,” she admitted with a light chuckle, noting that most of the other students around them seemed just as at a loss as they were. She began walking, not real destination in mind, but deciding that going somewhere was better than just standing still. They’d no doubt wind up at some empty classroom eventually. “I’ve been trying to think of a name,” She admitted, her mind once again coming back to the name which kept coming to mind. “I have no idea why, but all I can think of is George.” It didn’t seem like the type of name one would give a worm, but something about it felt perfect for the slimy thing.

Paisley nodded as she listened to Sarah."That's a nice name," she laughed. "But perhaps you could do something like...Squiggle? Squirm?" She shook her head, knowing those were all awful choices. "Naming worms is hard, and not my cup of tea. Why don't we just sit here for awhile? Try to figure out how on earth we're supposed to entertain these things. I was not expecting them to be this big, that's for sure."

Paisley looked down at her worm. It seemed especially large-headed, and rolled to one side and then the other in her arms. It obviously didn't like her all that much. It was trying to escape! She turned it over and realized that perhaps she had been holding it the wrong way all along. Which part was it's head? She tried to conceal her struggles from Sarah, and casually held it the other way. Upon looking at it once more, she saw that this was in fact not it's head, and was the other end. She flipped it over, but at that moment slime started to ooze over the creature, making it incredibly slippery.

"Uhm....this isn't worming so well. I-I mean working so well," she laughed at her own accidental pun, and wiped the goo off of her hand and onto her robes. Looking at her robes sparked an idea, and she smirked at her worm. It wouldn't be able to escape so easily now!

She removed her robe, leaving only her collared shirt and skirt from beneath it, and wrapped the robe around her worm with minimal difficulty. She used the arms of her robe as a place to hold onto it. Since her robe had already been covered in goo, the creature could slime all he wanted and it wouldn't make a difference. "There, this should work. Now if I just...".She then wrapped the worm once, twice, and finally three times so it was in securely. This way it wouldn't be able to escape, and it would be much easier to hold. Looking down at the small bundle of goo that she had wrapped so tightly in her robes, Paisley wondered just how she had gotten here. In fact, this whole time, she had been wondering what she was doing. Was there a point to taking care of these worms?

"I don't know about you, but I want to know what all this is about. Is there a reason we're taking care of the worms? I didn't think they needed to be entertained, since they don't seem to do very much. What do you think?"
