Interaction status: open (owl me first would be better, but it's fine otherwise)
Action(s): heading to the third location, trying to suggest a solution to anyone who'd listen
Other mention(s): @Martyna Romero, @Piper Clark, @Alan Vanes, @Starlee Kennedy
Were those creatures Portkeys - that is, they were not real living creatures? Or did they have the ability to teleport undesired humans away? One minute Elisabeth and Gregorí were in a corridor full of those one-legged creatures, the next they were back in front of the Ballroom.

"Hey, espera. *) If they have teleportation ability, then they'll make excellent allies in dangerous situation," Elisabeth said inside her head But it seemed that currently the creatures were not in the mood to be approached by human beings, or perhaps they were just like that unless tamed; either way, Elisabeth did not bother to search for them again. Maybe next time.

Instead, the Hufflepuff looked at the Ilvermony student beside her and said, in Spanish, "Maybe I'll try following those students. They seem rather excited about something." And there were not so many of them. "Unless you don't want to?"

But Gregorí decided to go with her, so the two were off to the third location, where some students were hovering over a riddle written on a piece of paper. The ink was smudged in some parts, so really, it was not easy to read all of them.

Most of the kids were discussing the alphabet that would fit for each clue in the riddle, such as P for "the beginning of pain". However, Elisabeth was considering something else. Some time ago, her mamá recommended her to read a detective novel, and as a teaser, she quoted a part of a riddle and its answer to Elisabeth, " 'Take one lily, kill my friend Eli'. The answer was the word 'only', because that's what's left when you write 'one lily' and erase the three letters in the middle - E, L, and I." *

Which means one word, instead of letter, for each clue.

"I'm not sure about the first, though P seems like the logical answer," she said to anyone who would listen. "But what if the answer can also be a word for each number? I think the second should be Alohomora, I remember the professor mentioned it as 'the thief's friend' in our Charms class."

Translation:
*) wait (Spanish)

Footnote:
* The novel mentioned in this post is The Mystery of the Screaming Clock by Robert Arthur (sometimes mistakenly credited to Alfred Hitchcock). The "one lily" riddle, as well as its solution, is also taken from the same book.

Permission to have Gregorí agreed going to the third location granted by his player on 18 Dec.

What was that? Was he knocked unconscious? No, it could not be - he was on his legs, firmly standing. But why was he - and Elisabeth - here? Gregorí did not remember leaving the corridors full of the mysterious, three-colored creatures to head back to the ballroom of Hogwarts, but here he was now, and so was Elisabeth. The boy tried to ask the Hufflepuff if she could recall walking here, but she shook her head no. Were they hypnotized?

Gregorí was just trying to decide what to do when Elisabeth suggested they followed a number of shifting, whispering (nay, talking) students. "Sure," replied the Mexican boy in Spanish, shrugging. He did not have anything particular in mind, anyway. The two re-joined the group, with Gregorí did not neglect picking up sweets that were scattered all over the floor all along the way. He really liked sweet things - besides, he might get a little hungry soon because of all that was happening, right?

The group was discussing over a clue, a paper pinned on the wall where a painting should have been. Numbered fragments of sentences were written on it, but not everything was clear.

One student suggested the answer for the first clue was the letter P, which seemed to be accepted by almost all other students without further questions.

The second proved to be more of a challenge, with many considered it might be the letter I so that the whole clues would make one or two words. Elisabeth, though, suggested that it might be a word - a spell to be exact, the spell Alohomora. "Or maybe it simply means 'darkness'?" added Gregorí. "Or Nox? Perhaps the instant darkness powder - what's its name again?"

Sparkling, silver boots clapped against the cold stone floor as the Hufflepuff neared the location she'd been given, breathing heavily and sweating under her costume. It was eerily quiet at this point, and far too chilly, even for October. Why couldn't they just abra-kadabra the castle to an acceptable temperature year-round? So annoying! These wizards weren't very resourceful even with their funny magic tricks, as the professors were proving with their lack of intervention. In spite of her initial insistence that this was all some fun scavenger hunt made by them, however, Tina couldn't help but feel an awful, sinking feeling that time was running out, and that others were giving up. Was there really any way to save the man in the portrait at this point? People had called out to the so-called hero multiple times now, and it felt like he was ignoring them. A stitch was biting into her side. Why bother trying?

That was when she rounded the last corner and subsequently slowed to a halt, dropping her hands from where they were held up to her mouth creating a miniature echo-chamber to call out to Giselle. Her blood ran cold.

On the far wall was not the portrait of a fair maiden she'd been expecting, but instead a very dusty shadow and a slip of nondescript paper. Ginger and hesitant, Martyna crept forwards, a faint and futile, "Giselle...?" escaping her lips as she did so. She didn't really sound like herself. It was clear that something had happened to the painting, even if no one else wanted to say anything as they arrived. Tina's eyes scanned over the words. "A poem?" she suggested, but another first year Slytherin @Piper Clark seemed to know better. There weren't many others who'd followed, unlike the first time she'd ran off, aside from some older boy Tina didn't know, and...

Starlee.

She faintly heard the sound of two others arriving, speaking in a language that made her ears prick with familiarity (it was a strange but comforting reminder of home amongst all the chaos, honestly) however her mind remained elsewhere. As Alan and Piper discussed possibilities for the meanings behind the lines (which didn't make any sense to Martyna, but hey, not much did), she was unable to take her stare away from Starlee. In the pit of her stomach stuck stubbornly the anger and confusion she'd felt at the start of the evening, but also guilt at the way her friend massaged her eye. Was she hurt? Just frustrated? It wouldn't surprise Tina if something bad had happened. Her night had been a rotten one, and part of that was the Hufflepuff's fault, admittedly...

Ugh.

"No," she managed, the words physically weighty in her mouth as she tried to speak them. She forced herself to look up. It hurt her throat, and her ego, to be speaking to Starlee directly and in a way that wasn't hostile, but she was trying her best to be sincere. "I think you're right about the spells. Like, the dancing one, that'll be Taran-leg-terra or whatever," she said to Alan who, judging by their matching dino-costumes, had a pretty cool cat. That made her chest feel a little lighter. "But... I dunno a lot. And I dunno what the beginning of pain is." Speaking of pain... Tina glanced back at Starlee, face tight and brow furrowed. Her expression may have shown the other girl just how much of a mental struggle it was for her to let go of stubbornness and put sour feelings aside for now, and to be a good person, but eventually her conscience won out. "Are you okay?"

[font=times new roman]“Ey, Wyatt.” Lindsey said as she nudged Wyatt. The Snake nodded, acknowledging her. “I see something in the painting…” Wyatt looked to where her finger was pointing. In the frame, there were a pair of dancing shoes. They looked either new or well cared-for. “Can…can you see it? There is a pair of shoes. Newly polished shoes and placed neatly. And I suspect, they are dancing shoes…but I don’t know what they mean.”

Wyatt didn’t know either. They’d come across few clues, but nothing to answer any questions, or at least that was what Wyatt had gathered. Another thing, no one was making it known the clues they found, so people could have seen something that the rest of the group didn’t. It wouldn’t be a big surprise if they ran out of time before they could answer the riddle. Then, there was a fire. Ah, yes. “Wouldn’t be a Hogwarts function without arson, now would it.”

Though incredibly predictable, this was also very disappointing. Wyatt furrowed his brows and sighed. Whatever happened to working on stopping some “tragedy”? Honestly, Wyatt thought. If this is as serious as it seems, and people are starting little fires, maybe we deserve a tragedy. “Idiot. Setting this on fire.” Wyatt hummed in agreement. “It’s as if they’ve just given up. Who could’ve thought lighting a fire would get them anywhere?”

Whoever did this was, no doubt, a Gryffindor. Turning, he saw a few people bunched up together. They seemed to be looking at some kind of note. “Hey,” Wyatt said to Lindsey. He nodded in the direction of the parchment. He walked over and managed to see over the heads of a few first years.

When a first-year in front of him suggested, number one could be “P”. He agreed, it was odd that the P in “Pain” was capitalized, and the beginning of the word pain is obviously P. But was that what this clue was then? Letters? And most of the lines were smudged! Even one was empty. Perhaps number 10, blindness, was “I”?

Percival followed Opeila's gaze to the eavesdropping boy. It was entirely possible, the boy had just been close enough to hear them, but Percival found it within himself to truly care. Percival glared at the elder boy as he threw insults around left and right. Percival minded bring called useless, but when the boy insulted that's where he, and Opeila, crossed the line.

The boy nodded in agreement as Opeila dug into the older boy. "A warning would have been appreciated." he snapped at he stared at the fourth year. It did surprise him that the elder student was acting so childish. "You're a fourth year? I was almost certain you were some snobby first year." his growing more snappy.

Percival followed Opeila growing close the burning painting. The flames seemed to dance across the painting. Mesmerizing the boy as he stared at orange flame. "Who thought seeing a painting would help us any?" he grumbled slightly.

Only two people thought of casting the Extinguishing Charm - Cassie Heather and a boy she didn't recognise, though her accent told her that he didn't belong to Hogwarts. Funny, how only the foreigners seemed to have any sense - in Cassie's forthright opinion anyway. Maybe it was more complicated than she thought; that, or the Hogwarts students were just used to fire springing up randomly. Cassie wasn't sure which thought she found the most disturbing.
Luckily, both spells hit - the muggleborn couldn't help a rush of pride - and the flames fizzled out.

Cassie was too dumbfounded by the painting's statement that she didn't even ask how you could find another true love. Surely, the whole point was that you only had one 'true love'? Not that Cassie herself believed in any of that, of course. The muggle-born only spluttered, expression somewhere between amusement and incredulity, as Scarlett bestowed a smirk upon the man and told him exactly what she thought about whether the lioness needed a man or not.

Gaiz just turned away stubbornly in response to Cassie's heartfelt minature speech, but, you know what, that was okay. Sort of. The redhead leaned in to ask the painted man a question, and Cassie frowned. "Didn't we already know that? She's, like, down the corridor, and- wait!" Her eyes lit up. "Lettie! She's down the corridor!"
It was unlikely anyone would be able to figure out what was going on inside Cassie's head, least of all herself, but a plan was forming. "Why don't we just... Sorry.."
Reaching forwards with an apology to the painting's original occupant, she attempted to take the painting Gaiz was in off the wall.

Nick grazed his hands along the painting, finding mostly dust bunnies. Then he felt something lodged behind the painting, something long and cylindrical. He tried pulling on it, glad the other students chatting with the man in the painting were keeping him busy. After a good tug, Nick pulled out a Black Candle, which looked old with a strange sheen on it. He remembered learning in DADA how black candles tended to have something to do with ghosts, so maybe someone left it there on purpose?

As Nick was observing the candle, something bright lit up in the corner of his eye. He turned and saw the boy he had met at the pet grooming event, Robert, lighting Gaiz's painting on fire! He yelped and stepped back, as the small group of students started to delve into small chaos. It was quickly shut down by two students who Nick didn't recognize. After calming down, he noticed Henry motion to him, seemingly asking him if he found anything. Nick waved the candle out so Henry could see it before shrugging. The fire had given Nick a, probably dumb, idea.

Nick thought about it, and then pulled out the wand nestled in the sleeve of his suit. He looked back and forth between the wand and the candle, being brought back to less than a year ago, when he had tried lighting a different candle and set the Slytherin dorm, and the hair of a girl, on fire. The group had just extinguished the fire Robert had started, should he really risk starting another one? Nick supposed he was at least a bit better of a wizard than he was last year and ghosts seem to be a big part of this mystery, so what's the harm in trying?

Trying to do as much damage control as possible, Nick decided he would alert everyone to the spell he was going to cast so no one would be caught off guard if something went haywire. Raising his voice, Nick addressed the crowd of students, "Ay everyon' 'm 'bout tae cast Incendio on this candle. It shouldn' cause a problem, but who knows?" Taking a breath, he tried to block out the world around him and focus on the spell. Drawing a small flame with his wand pointed at the wick of the candle, he uttered, "Incendio"

The boy's expression and lack of expression to a spell cast at him should have earned more of a reaction from Ana. She of all people knew what it was like to shut everyone out and get stuck in her own head. She had spent far too much time doing that since the summer and it had caused nothing but pain for her. If she was a kind person, she might have offered the boy word of comfort. No one had ever accused her of being kind. Instead, she rolled her eyes and scoffed before her attention was drawn by the cat moving to yet another location. She had a difficult enough time being kind to herself, being kind to another person was beyond her reach at the moment.
THIRD LOCATION
There was a bald spot as if there was supposed to be a painting there and it had been removed. Rather like the second man that was supposed to be in that first painting. Despite the fire, Ana was more bored and frustrated than anything else. If the school was in danger, why couldn't it be something like a dragon? What was with the hunting and riddles? A dragon would definitely be more interesting. Maybe Ana ought to get her hands on one and set it loose at the next event to make things more interesting. In the space where a painting ought to rest, there was an odd note. Ana squinted at it.

Some sort of riddle or poem most likely. Some other girl seemed to have the same idea Ana did and voiced it as Ana readied her wand to cast her spell. "Revelio!" she said, firmly with a confident swish of her wand. As she waited to see if her spell was cast successfully, she squinted at the words that were legible. Pain and horror were both capitalized as if they were names or places. The start of each visible line was capitalized, but some had subsequent letters that were as well. She made a mental note of which were: TPAADFPHBFA. No discernable words or phrases leaped out at her. She was definitely going to need to be able to read some of the other lines to make any rhyme or reason of it.

There was nothing but flames. Burning flames, jumping lively on the painting. The man in the painting had already fled somewhere to another portrait, and left chaos in the corridors. Lindsey frowned. It seemed that this place had lost its value. Maybe they should move on now, instead of wasting time here.

“Hey,” Wyatt nodded to her, showing her the direction of a note. Some people were already there, looking at it. It seemed…rather suspicious. She nodded back, and followed the Slytherin boy. If she had already decided to leave this location, then why not move on?

And then Lindsey saw it. A note. With writings on it. She leaned closer to it, and read quietly.

They didn’t make sense. Not even a little bit, according to the chocolate brown eyes’ mind. Soft gaze slowly left the lines. There were, just so much smudged ones…Lindsey really wished to cast a Scourgify, yet she knew that it would cause the whole parchment in soap. It was when someone — Anastasia Beckett to be exact — casted a Revelio. This certain Gryffindor had gotten into a weird fight with Scarlett her friend, and Lindsey once tried hard to stop it. She didn’t know much about this older student, though, and Lindsey regraded this as rather a smart act.

The beginning of pain…is it P, by chance? Somehow she agreed with a younger girl. But what did a thief’s helper mean? A crowbar? Or something…some magical things? Like Alohomora?

She suddenly felt a shiver gone from her head to her toes. “Could they be characters? And we could make up a word? Like P, A…or even…spells?” she murmured, mostly to her own self, but it was still audible for the ones near her. “The beginning of pain…Incendio, maybe? Thief’s helper can be Alohomora. A ball’s for Dancing might represent Tarantallegra. Protection from horror may be Extinguo. Blindness stands for Obscuro. First Aid might have to do with Ferula…” she began spoke faster and louder when she came up with more spells. She became more confident over time, and thank Merlin, she knew a good deal of spells.

So did the post mean that they should cast the spells one by one? But no, maybe not. Lindsey was extremely prudent on this. An Incendio might cause some problems, while no casting was better. Maybe those didn’t represent spells at all. Maybe they were even the plans of the evil force?

Again she leaned closer to the note. Maybe she could spot something useful…like some hints. Some hints convincing her that her theory was right. Secretly Lindsey hoped that she could eventually get something right tonight…after all, she was always good at solving riddles and doing intellectual works.

@Henry Knight had enough. He had tried this the nice way, but Gaiz wasn’t cooperative after all - so it was time to change tone.
Charisma Roll (DC 15 + 2 (Lovely Creature)): 23
He ranted at the rude man who seemed to be a bit surprised about the harsh tone but also kind of tired. Mercy, his painting had been on fire.
”Young man, I am tired of this conversation. There’s nothing more I can tell you. I tried to kill Denbora, but Taja will be around to save him anyway. If you want further information speak to Giselle…”
With this he turned to @Scarlett Aden, his eyes dark and sad, no trace of the rage and hate.
Charisma Roll (DC 15 + 2 (Lovely Creature)): 24
”And yes. She was my one and only. But that’s over. I should move on.” With these words he glanced at his own painting which wasn’t on fire anymore, apologized to the girl in the current painting and made his way back.

Before he could leave it though Cassie Heather McGregor-Martin (@Lucia Fox) decided to remove this painting from the wall.
Strength Roll (DC 10): 17
With a quick movement she lifted the painting with the girl and Gaiz and took it from the wall. Both screamed and the girl stumbled into Gaiz who was quick enough to catch her.

@Robert Toukmond didn’t realize anything of that drama since he was still caught in shock about his own actions. His eyes were numb, something that worried the young Hufflepuff @Callista Lovis. If she made him look at her she would probably bring him back?
Callista casts Lumos (DC 8 + 2 (Lovely Creature))
Wisdom Roll: 15
To force a reaction she lighted her wand and a warm light spread into the corridors. Hm, maybe this made the whole situation more cozy.

@Percival Rainwood was still staring at the painting. The flickering flames were burned into his retinas and he could still see them clearly, even though they had been extinguished. Maybe Callista or @Opeila Winters should light a wand under his nose as well to bring him back to reality?

@Caelan Stewart chose a different approach to solve the problem. They were sent on this mission by a spirit and since he had found this candle, why not try to conjure another spirit to help them? Regarding of the disaster that had happened with the last Incendio he focused on the candle and gave his fellow students a fair warning.
Caelan casts Incendio (DC 9 + 2 (Lovely Creature))
Wisdom Roll: 18
The targeted spell set the wick of the candle ablaze. And suddenly, with a weird flickering light, the spirit of a girl appeared. A bit confused, she looked at the students before her gaze stopped at the boy who had called her. Her eyes widened and she made a step towards him. “Listen. I don’t have much time. You have to find Paran. This hunt is not going as planned. something has gone wrong. Please…” But her time was up. With the same flickering light she had come with she disappeared.
THIRD LOCATION
At the next location, there was still this odd note to be found. The general consensus seemed to be that it was some sort of riddle, something to be figured out, an answer maybe to the mysterious disappearance of Giselle.
OOC Note:

In the previous mod post there was a mistake in the numbering, which was noted by a few of you. That was not on purpose (apparently we can’t count properly), and has been fixed now. Our apologies.

@Piper Clark, @Elisabeth Erner, Gregorí Erkens (@Ginevra Tsuchiya ), @Alan Vanes, and @Martyna Romero all tried to figure out the meaning of the mysterious hints. Maybe it was a letter for each line? Maybe a word each? The opinions differed. They needed to work together to figure this out.

@Lindsey Springhall observed that maybe each line stood for a spell - but which? Was there something else suspicious to be found on the note?
Observation Roll (DC 15 + 2 (Lovely Creature)): 18
Those smudged lines were odd. It didn’t look like an accident - or even natural. Maybe something could be revealed here - maybe with the right spell?

@Starlee Kennedy , too, thought there might be something to be gained from looking at those oddly smudged lines. As a first year, she didn’t yet know how to cast the Revealing Charm, but suggested someone else should - and at the same time, took a closer look herself.
Observation Roll (DC 15 + 2 (Lovely Creature)): nat2 -> Critical failure (Terrible Presence)
Easily distracted this one was, it seemed. Anastasia’s terrible presence next to her again made the girl shy away, her gaze straying from the note.

But at least @Anastasia Beckett had the same idea as Starlee - and as a third year, actually knew the appropriate spell.
Anastasia casts Revelio (DC 11 + 2 (Lovely Creature))
Wisdom Roll: 11
Had she been alone, it would have worked - but she too was distracted by the presence of someone else, although more lovely than terrible in this case. The spell sputtered at the tip of her wand, but never went off. It was a good idea, however - maybe someone should try this again?

@Wyatt Starkey also had a closer look at the odd note. Maybe he could learn more about it?
Observation Roll (DC 15 + 2 (Lovely Creature)): 11
Unfortunately, all the other students were blocking his view. If they moved aside, he probably would notice something?
WHAT HAPPENED SO FAR…
Reducio
  • A ghost appeared in the Ballroom, proclaiming warnings of doom and tragedy, and challenged students to solve the mystery. He pointed to a silvery ghost cat as the guide, who at this point, has been named Star.
  • Several students noticed odd things about the ghost:
    • Dmitri Jones and Kara Capricorn shared that they noticed a crest on his robes that was later identified as stemming from the St. Mungo’s Hospital.
    • Howard White noticed the Hufflepuff crest on his robes, but only shared this with Falentra Black, somewhat separate from the main group.
    • Romeo Marchonné remembered odd silver stains on the ghost’s sleeves and told his companions about them… blood, maybe?
  • The ghost cat led you to a painting, depicting a man who obviously had been attacked and was fighting for his life - but healing and repairing proved fruitless. Could anyone save him?
  • Several students noticed odd things about the painting:
    • Anastasia Beckett, Andrew Vance and Dmitri Jones pointed out an inscription below the painting: “Paran Taja saves Laiks Denbora”. Who was the man in the painting? Why was no one saving him?
    • Dmitri Jones also noticed that the painting composition seemed somehow unbalanced, as did Sapphire Riddle. Maybe something was missing here!
    • Andrew Vance pointed out a streak of blood on the floor of the painting. Maybe there had been a struggle? Had someone been dragged away - but by who, or what?
    • Aida Mòrsgor-Ama Ellwood made anyone listening aware of a scrap of fabric on the floor in the painting, red in colour, and depicting a lion. Odd.
    • Both Soren Silverwood and Callista Lovis had the idea to talk to nearby portraits to find out what had happened here. Both were pointed towards a painting that was supposed to be near the Gryffindor Common Room.
  • The Gryffindor Common Room? Martyna Romero took the lead and ran off in this direction. It appeared that Star agreed with this, as the cat followed Tina’s departing steps. Star led the party to a painting near the realm of the Brave.
  • There were several things that the students found out from this second painting:
    • The man depicted in it was called Gaiz Toa.
    • It didn’t take much prodding for him to admit his intense dislike for Paran Taja, that damn goody-two-shoes who always came running when someone called his name, and Laiks Denbora, who had apparently stolen his girl. Yes, obviously Denbora deserved to be stabbed for that - a deed Toa seemed to be rather proud of. The painting of the girl, Giselle could be found in the next corridor over.
  • Some yelling and fighting ensued when Robert Toukmond decided to set the painting on fire but it was quickly extinguished, only a corner of it burnt. Needless to say, Gaiz Toa was not pleased.
  • But Martyna Romero, again, had picked out a new location from the painting’s ranting, and set off to find the painting of his lost lady-love, Giselle, Star in tow.
  • And yet… the painting seemed to be gone, an odd note in its place. Was there something to be found out from the mysterious words?
