Kara let out the slightest yelp when the cat brushed her hand. "Sta- I mean the cat, is definitely not a patronus. She's ghost of some sorts, but I wonder what the ghost of a cat is doing here, and what the importance of her is. She may be the pet of somebody who used to live her."

Well then. Was the cat not going to be useful then? Henry and Kara seemed to naturally take the lead; Piper was rather envious of this skill. She had literally no idea what to do. Kara quickly remedied this by assigning the Slytherin first-year a task. "While I'm trying to get Star to tell me anything, can you look for any clues, and then inform me or Henry of anything you find." Star...that was the cat's name, then. Hmph. "Yeah, sure."

Piper couldn't help but feel slightly resentful that Kara got to follow the ghost cat while she was stuck with scouring a room for clues that had already been looked for. The room was no longer quiet, but abuzz with students interrogating the surrounding paintings and announcing they had found clues. Most intriguing was a piece of scarlet cloth with a lion symbol. Several students wasted no time in zipping off to the Gryffindor common room, including Kara, Henry, and Star the Ghost Cat. For roughly ten seconds, Piper stood there in a daze. She felt quite utterly useless. So much for being the hero...she wandered over to a different painting.

"Who are you? You can't tell me anything helpful?" she demanded in frustration of a painting of a man in the corner. The other, wounded man looked in pain, but how could he die? How did that even work? More importantly, who would do that to a painting? Why would painting characters beat each other up? Candy coincidences. The ghost rider's name. Too many questions and way too few answers. Where were the staff!? Piper turned from the portrait and halfheartedly browsed the room and eavesdropped on conversations, none of which were extremely useful. Eventually she decided to follow the cat to the Gryffindor tower, as that appeared to be the best lead.

When she arrived, bare feet about frozen numb, the group that had left was questioning still more paintings. Piper groaned; she was way too confused about all the paintings. She wanted to ask someone about the story behind Laiks Denbora and Paran Taja so she could connect the dots, but she decided to observe everyone and particularly pay attention to what the portrait of Gaiz Toa was saying, as it seemed to be a major point of focus so far.

Looking at the big picture, Piper listed the facts in her head to see if they related in any way:

-Mysterious ghost horseman - find out his name "in time"
-Mysterious ghost cat "Star", leading the way
-Candy found on the ground by many students: acid pops, toothflossing stringmint, peppermint toads, and sherbet lemons
-Painting of a man - Laiks Denbora - with blood and shallow breathing
-a piece of cloth with the Gryffindor emblem
-A portrait called Gaiz Toa

Yep, NOTHING made sense. What in the name of Merlin was happening? Piper hoped to un-muddy her brain and still contribute something worthwhile towards solving the mystery.

Other mention(s): @Mars T'ien
"Do you want to investigate that? It looks like nobody else was there."

Elisabeth was actually getting interested in the weird clock behind a picture, revealed by a Hogwarts student who successfully lifted the painting up without dropping it. The mysterious clock, particularly because it ticked backwards, brought back a number of good memories to her.

First was the Muggle fairy tale Cinderella, perhaps especially since it seemed to show, or probably threaten, its viewers that they only had enough time until midnight.

Second was a novel her mamá had recently recommended the eleven-year-old to read, titled The Mystery of the Screaming Clock. Elisabeth had not done so, but mamá had promised that it was a great detective story with lots of smart riddles and no supernatural element whatsoever. (No one in Elisabeth's nuclear family enjoyed fantasy novels.)

And finally... the strange clock reminded the Hufflepuff of the writer who recommended her the aforementioned book - her own mamá. As a writer, the lady also read a lot of books, and she happened to enjoy quoting something once in a while. One that Elisabeth remembered clearly was "It was a bright cold day in April, and the clocks were striking thirteen" *, which also mentioned an odd clock like the one behind the painting. In addition, her mamá sometimes sang this song mentioning a "town clock in the market square" which 'stands waiting for the hour when its hands they both turn backwards" ** - a song whose lyrics Elisabeth could not fully comprehend since it contained surreal, dream-like imagery.

However, as much as the girl wanted to take a closer look at the mysterious down-counter (as she dubbed it), she was now also interested in the flickering light on top of the stairs. Thus, she decided to take a look at the new spot; she could always come back to the clock if there was nothing up the stairs...

Elisabeth said yes, and Gregorí and she walked up the stairs. On the way, the Mexican boy asked if the Hufflepuff happened to know if the painting subject was always bleeding like that, to which Elisabeth answered no.

They fell silent for a moment before the Belizean girl initiated to ask, "Gregorí, ¿por casualidad viste el reloj? El que está detrás de la pintura." *) She stopped to take a breath and muttered, half to herself and half for the Ilvermony student to hear, "It turns backwards. We have time until midnight. At midnight, I'll turn into a pumpkin and drive away in my glass slipper." ***

Gregorí had not had the time to reply when they arrived on top of the stairs.

Footnotes:
* The quote is from George Orwell's dystopian novel 1984, in which it was the opening sentence.
** This song, which Elisabeth's mother sometimes sang, is titled Homburg. It was made popular by English rock band Procol Harum and first released in 1967.
*** The last sentence Elisabeth speaks here is directly quoted from 1953 classic Roman Holiday.

Translation:
*) Gregorí, do you happen to see the clock? The one behind the painting. (Spanish)

Ruka couldn't help it; As much as he wanted to keep up a teasing demeanour, his expression softened, eyes sparkling fondly as he watched Dealla looking down on the glitter that had gotten caught on her skin and the fabric of her dress. "We'll figure it out," he promised gently, wrapping his own arms around his middle and rocking back and forth on the balls of his feet for a moment as if he was feeling a bit chilly. In all honesty, his dress was not exactly cut from the warmest material and the Castle was not filled with a cozy warmth in the middle of October, so the shivers running through him were understandable, the goosebumps on his skin inevitable.

Staying in that position, Ruka watched as Dealla leaned forward to reassure Jake, something akin to a challenge in her voice as she told the little frog that someone just needed to solve the riddles and the portrait would be fine again. The sight filled him with a warmth that hadn't been there before and he let go of his own waist, instead taking a step closer towards the Ravenclaw as if magnetically drawn in by her. His face turned to look at Jake again, however, an encouraging smile stretching his lips. "You should keep your eyes open, Jake," he added with a nod. "Maybe you'll see exactly what's needed to save the painting."

With a small chuckle, he turned to follow the crowd again, eyes drifting every so often to watch the way Dealla's dress fluttered to the rhythm of her enthusiastically paced steps, flecks of glitter trailing behind her and making her look like her own kind of mystical woodland fairy. For a moment, Ruka was tempted to give her his wings but thought better of it with a shake of his head.

When she spoke again, Ruka looked up with a trace of surprise in his expression. He hadn't really expected her to remember the majority of that first conversation they had had, but her words suggested that she had been paying attention, had kept in mind the things that Ruka had thrown out as offhand comments. It filled him with a sense of pride somehow, to have been interesting enough for her to still remember specifics of their conversation.

"Right," he agreed quietly, nodding his confirmation. With a small laugh he looked back at Jack and Jake for a moment, eyes sparkling fondly. "Sort of," he answered, remembering the first time he had met Jack, watched as he had reached into the flames, had taken the agonising burn of fire against skin over Ruka's extended company. They had come a long way since then. "Jake hasn't, technically, I suppose," he amended with a thoughtful hum. "But we saved a bunny from the horrible pain of a broken leg together, which is almost as accurate an evaluation of someone's quality." Winking, Ruka took one more step up the stairs, stopping to examine the crowd and their surroundings for a moment.

He could feel a slight pull at his back, saw Dealla caressing one of his wings from the corner of his eye but decided not to mention it. A strange sense of satisfaction coursed through him at the knowledge that he was more interesting to her than anything happening around them, even if it was only because of his costume.

He gave it a moment, let the girl examine the wing until she let go of it again, easing the slight pull against his back again, then he turned to face her completely, an excited spark brightening his eyes when her interest was clearly piqued by the suggestion of straying from the path.

It took him off guard for a moment when she stated so confidently that she was mainly here for him, no embarrassment in her voice or expression, no flattery or mockery, just a fact. She had come here for him, was staying here for him, would follow him if he had other plans. It almost made him feel dizzy.

Swallowing heavily, Ruka turned to face the other two boys, cheeks flushed, chest heaving with new-found excitement. "You guys can handle this, right?" he asked, though it was more of an observation, almost a request. They would be alright if he left, would be able to solve the riddles if they wanted to, or just return to either of the other two Ball locations. He wasn't really needed here, and Dealla seemed far more excited at the prospect of having their own little adventure than at the thought of staying here, so there was no harm done.

Turning back to Dealla, Ruka confidently reached out to take her hand into his own. "I'll show you," he said, a wide grin spreading on his face as he gently pulled her away from the crowd and along a familiar hallway. "Time for your Fire Trial, I think."

Robert's eyes widened as he managed to find a noticeable tear on the man in the painting's robe. It was hard to see if a piece of cloth was actually missing, what with the painting's moving around and all, but it was enough evidence to convince Robert that this man was a murderer. Struck dumb by this piece of information, Robert didn't move at all of a couple seconds. Staring in shock at the painting, it would have been almost impossible for him to miss the pieces of information being handed out by the man. The young boy learned his name was Gaiz Toa, he hated both Paran Taja and Laiks Denbora, names he recognized from the first painting, and that Denbora had done something with someone named Giselle, Toa's significant other.

It is impossible to say exactly why Robert did what he did when he was finally able to shake himself out of his stupor. Maybe he felt it necessary to take things into his own hands, since there were no adults around, and the other children seemed more focused on figuring out exactly what was happening than taking action. This man was a murderer, what more was there to figure out? Maybe it was the fact that Gaiz was trying to use love as an excuse for killing someone. Robert was only eleven, it would be impossible for him to understand the strange ways of the heart and the things they can push you to do. In his mind, this man was taking the most pure thing in the world, and using it as an excuse to do something evil. Or maybe he just wanted dueling practice, there's no way to know for sure.

Whatever the reason, Robert drew his wand in an almost dreamlike state, instinctively positioning himself in a dueling pose. Pointing the wand at the painting on the wall, he shouted out an incantation. Even as the words were leaving his mouth, he couldn't quite believe what he was about to do. "Incendio!"

Poke.

Poke, poke poke.

Nah, she only poked the painting once, but even then, she already got all the information she needed. Whoever, whatever the threat was, it most likely wasn't physical. Or if it was, it certainly had some other means by which it had left this poor unit of a lad lying here helplessly. RIP, yeah? Still, she was more than disappointed that she hadn't been able to uncover something mind-blowing or revolutionary. Was she not as brilliantly ingenious as she thought she was?

Ami's head whipped around towards Charles' direction as she heard the incredibly loud clattering of the painting falling to the floor. "What the hell are you doing?" she muttered, marching over to him and staring at the painting on the floor below them. "What's throwing a painting over the railing going to help with?" Maybe he had some sort of aggravation with that particular painting? Maybe she shouldn't ask, if it was a personal matter, or a personal grievance that she had no idea about.

"Okay, uh..." Glancing around, Ami could hear the general chatter of the students around them, but she could also feel her brain short-circuiting with all of the confusion and sensory information. "We need to figure out what's going on," she muttered. "I think we might have to talk to someone... no. No, we can do this. We're geniuses."

... were they, though?

Ami began to march over to where the painting was last, but then realized that there were several things wrong. First and foremost, some scrawy little punk had snatched the painting right off the wall. And on the wall, writing- well, not writing. Numbers. Which she hated more than anything in the entire world- who liked math, anyway? "Charles, darling, go check out those numbers," she muttered under her breath. "I have a child to murder."

Okay, so maybe that was a bit of an exaggeration, but the intent remained the same. With the fury and rage of an offended tiger, Ami lunged towards Mars, roaring like a lion.

Maybe she should've been sorted into Gryffindor...

Ana laughed slightly at the idea of Marshal being remotely intimidating. There were many, many things that could be said about him, but intimidating wouldn't even in the top one hundred. He was about as intimidating as a marshmallow. Or a Marshalmallow. She smirked slightly at her own pun as she walked. She wouldn't share the nickname with him, as it would likely come off as a tad demeaning, but as always, she was quite amused with her own wit.

"If he's disturbed, he ought to go punch someone or get some help, not subjugate poor painting occupants to a life of misery," Ana replied, with another small laugh at Marshal's suggestion of flowers as an alternative subject to paint.

At Marshal's questioning of the painting, an impressed eyebrow rose. He was clearly a tad more observant than he liked to let on, which made Ana respect him slightly more. Not that much, considering how they met and that her mental nickname was definitely still Marshalmallow, but a bit more. Her eyes flitted back to the painting to discern how he might respond to that.

As her gaze traveled to the corridors behind them, she noticed an odd flickering of the lights. What the bloody hell was going on? Even in the magical world, lights flickering were a bad sign. She vaguely registered the painting's name, Gaiz Toa, and some talk of a girl, but her focus was on the flickering lights. None of these names sounded at all British or were anyone she had ever heard of. The latter part probably had to do with the fact that she would forget anything she learned about History of Magic the moment she took an exam on it. Still, the names definitely weren't English, and she almost wondered if they were some sort of anagram altogether.

Huffing slightly and pursing her red lips, she scanned the area around her and the painting in an attempt to figure out exactly what was going on. For something supposedly life-threatening, this was rather boring and was beginning to seriously regret abandoning the Masquerade and more specifically her date. She had been having a lovely time and then that ghostly rider had burst in.

It wasn’t surprising that she had failed again. Not even a little bit. Mr Treasure Map — she called that man like this from now on — said playfully. “Not with that attitude, we won’t. Be a darling and run along with the others if you want to solve this mystery.” She shrugged. Not even a little bit trustworthy, huh? Though at least she got the information of moving on. Not very bad — at least it seems now. She was always optimistic. Maybe a little bit too much.

She heard Wyatt suggest moving on. “Oi, I’m comin’!” She answered, then got back to his side. She knew that he was right. There was no time was to lose. Two more people may help a lot, right? The ones over there needed them.

And there she was. Beside the Gryffindor common room. To be frank, it was the place that she was always dreaming. She had wished to be a lion from the very beginning, though the sorting hat had rejected from the very beginning as well — this was her brother’s house, the house that she loved a lot. Though she still found herself most connected to Slytherin. For instance, Wyatt —

Oh no. People. People everywhere. Although she was not afraid of meeting new people, and in contrast, she liked it, people everywhere made she cannot see things clearly. For example, the thing they were busy investigating. Lindsey perceived it was a painting. Huh. She didn’t trust those paintings anymore now.

She had spotted Leonard in the crowd, and Marshal as well. Were they solving…solving some mysteries? Or had they already spotted something? She wasn’t very sure. Maybe she should do something others hadn’t tried yet…and her ears caught the name “Giselle”.

“Giselle, Giselle.” she muttered to herself. “Why, if it’s just a coincidence…the ballet. Giselle was gone. Though she was died according to her own will. Not be stolen by others.” the ballet had came back to her mind. Her father took her to watch it when she was quite young, but the sad love story remained in her head. Now it was back.

“She was forced to leave a count. And they danced. So what if…” her voice faded in the air. Slowly turning back to Wyatt, she asked. “What do you think?”

Despite other events during the night would say otherwise, the lemon sherbet he ate didn't have any effect on Nick. It was pretty nice and sweet, if not a bit stale, possibly sitting there for a while. He wouldn't eat the other candy, for now.

The painting that Nick had been lead to was quite rude, though that was expected from a lot of the paintings. Even if a lot of them weren't just generally perturbed, a bunch of children bombard him with questions must be quite annoying. For once, he didn't just blab what he thought of someone to the entire group, because he didn't want to upset the painting into giving them information they needed.

While some other students might be annoyed with Henry's approach to the situation, Nick didn't. He was very charismatic with the portraits and seemed to be getting through to them. Plus, he was giving the clueless Slytherin a bit of direction. "'ve got a feelin' the only thing that'll swing this portrait intae saying anythin' is bribery. 'm happy to look for clues but maybe an exchange o' information with this classy lad might be a good thing tae try." Nick said to Henry in response to his proposition. Henry was definitely the more charismatic of the two so is one of them is going to be doing the talking, it should be him.

Henry had suggested searching for clues and Nick decided to search what was right in front of him. Someone of the students were pointing out improper composition in the first painting but Nick didn't know much about that. He was, however, well versed with the walls of the school, constantly running his hand on it while walking to classes. The paintings couldn't be the only ones involved in this since, they're paintings, so Nick decided to observe the wall around the painting. Perhaps there would be something in the creases or something sticking out nearby.

Mars hefted the painting, legs planted firmly against the floor and arms straining under the weight of the wood. They sent a silent apology to the bleeding occupant, hoping that they weren't worsening his wounds. Geez, why was this so heavy?

Leaning half of it against the wall, body still underneath to prop it up, they glanced at the thing that had just been revealed. Numbers... numbers? A countdown from the looks of it. Well, that was sketchy. But for what? Mars craned their neck around as best they could. Typically, a countdown didn't bode well for a situation. There must be something out of place, something not quite right here.

They noticed the lights flickering a fair bit away. They were getting closer, weren't they, the spaces between on and off slowly growing. The sight left a sinking feeling in their gut. They weren't scared of the dark, per-say, but they did not want to be holding a very delicate painting in the middle of a crowd if the hallways suddenly went pitch black. What was that? Why was it messing with the lights? A ghost of some sort?

Mars probably could've sat pondering all day, had their muscles not reminded them of the slight problem they had at hand. Ah, they should really put this down, huh? They wanted to put a finger to those letters anyway, to see if it was paint or stone or even... well, was blood too much to assume? Perhaps, but then, this was Hogwarts. It seemed like anything that could go wrong, would.

Okay, okay, focus on putting the painting down first. They grunted, starting to bend at the knees in an attempt to very gingerly set it on the floor but—why was someone screaming behind them? And why did it sound awfully directed at them?

With a start, they whipped their head around to see a very large Hufflepuff lunging at them. She must've been a Fourth Year from the looks of her... wait. They'd seen her before, hadn't they? Where... where... oh, right. The highly aggressive one at Willow's egg race.

"What the hell are you doing, idiot? I didn't do anything!" they screamed, arms far too full of painting. Ah sh*t, there was still a wounded guy in the stinking thing. They couldn't very well drop it. "Stop, you imbecile, I'm gonna drop—!"

With very clunky movements, they attempted to dodge the girl whilst not jolting the painting too much. In their head, Mars let out a huge sigh. Of course, wasn't this just their luck.

Dmitri hated it when his actions got questioned—and he hated nothing more than his competence being the thing under scrutiny.

The older boy's eyes narrowed at Opeila Winters' comment on his Sonorus being rubbish.

"Listen here, brat. If your useless boyfriend had it in him to utilize the power of my spell—a spell you couldn't even begin to imagine casting considering you seem to lack the intellectual function to even understand why I cast it in the first place—then maybe it wouldn't have been 'rubbish' as you so eloquently put it. Instead of clamming up and standing there with his mouth open."

His glare would meet everyone else around him and would home in on Percival Rainwood's direction as its last destination. "Now all of that is moot because the ghost that could have helped us in this stupid quest is so far away that not even your magically-amplified idiotic voices can reach them."

Leave it to the younger, dumber students to not get things done the right way.

"You know what, forget it."

Dmitri would shoulder his way through the group of Slytherins around him, leaving them to do things his way instead of having them pull him down.

This was a night he was supposed to test the wit and magical might of his duellists, but they seemed to be proving themselves too incompetent to even solve what seemed like a simple—yet wild—riddle goose chase.

It was time to bring the Slytherin spirit into this and show these kids how it's done.

Proceeding to the Second Location alone

Arriving at the next stop, Dmitri would be beholden to the genuinely annoying and unhelpful painting that was Gaiz Toa.

From what he could gather, the guy had no manners nor the common decency to even be mildly helpful, expressing what seemed to be disgust at being mistaken for Paran Taja and Laiks Denbora. It didn't even bother him that the latter was injured, bleeding, and possibly even dying—if magically enchanted paintings can perish, that is.

And it angered the already-annoyed Dmitri.

Anyone who had their eyes on him at that same moment would see his nose flare a tiny bit wider through his frustration and a dark glint appear in his eyes. The heavy feeling—a terrible aura—surrounding the boy would seem to intensify.

Taking large steps full of purpose towards the painting, the Slytherin shoved those standing in front of it aside.

"Move over, idiots."

In a booming voice, full of venom and malice, Dmitri raised his wand towards the painting threateningly. "Gaiz Toa, wasn't it? I'm tired of this wild goose chase, racing around the corridors in the cold autumn night following an incorporeal feline for what seems to be art appreciation."

A sneer would form on his lips.

"When I joined the Fall Ball, I did not sign up for this, else I would have applied for an Art College instead of studying magic at Hogwarts. With that being said, I am very much out of patience by now, and if you don't find it in your fragile little canvas heart to be helpful—"

Almost too quick to follow, Dmitri would attempt to cast a Diffindo at an empty spot on the stone wall a little off to the side of the painting.

"—then you—a small, insignificant piece of canvas among the thousands in Hogwarts—will know exactly how I am at the edge of my good graces."
