Flobberfest Errand with Jack Burnett Finished

Kazuo had been excited to hear that the students were being asked to assist the groundskeeper in some magical creature care. The Mystical Creatures Club had been trying to expand their direct contact with beasties, after all, and it seemed like a perfect opportunity to do so while also proving himself responsible. The more the professors saw such behaviour, the more likely they might allow him - and maybe the others - access despite their youth. So it was that he had recruited Burnett to assist in this task, planning to meet up once they had acquired their assignment.

He had made his way to Cespedes-san’s cabin to offer his services, not entirely aware of what it would entail. As he was handed a blanket swaddled flobberworm he couldn’t have felt more disappointed. A slimy, wriggly worm. He kept his disappointment hidden behind his usual passive stoic mask, giving the groundskeeper a respectful nod as he accepted the lumpy bundle.

The trudge back to the school seemed far longer than it should have been, as did the expanse of the day stretched out before him. Already the wriggly beastie’s slimy secretions were beginning to coat the blanket it had been wrapped in. His nose wrinkled in disgust yet he continued onward, unwilling to abandon the horrific task he had undertaken. If he refused to take care of a worm, the likelihood that the professors would consider him for other beast related tasks would be lower.

The first stop in his quest would be the kitchen, an unfortunate requirement in order to obtain food. He eyed the house-elves with trepidation, keeping his distance as he made his request: lettuce, and lots of it. Once armed with a large bowl full of greens, he retreated, turning his direction to His and Burnett’s agreed-upon meeting place - an empty classroom where he could let the worm crawl about and do… whatever it is that worms do. He made the climb up the irritating staircases and down the long hallways, each step allowing the flobber to spit out more disgusting slime until he finally made it to the empty classroom. Slipping inside, he noted that Burnett had not yet arrived with his own demonic, ichor-spewing monstrosity. He placed the blanketed bundle of ick onto the floor, watching it inch its slimy way out of the cloth and across the stone toward the bowl of greens. As he stood, he stared down in dismay at the viscous fluid that had seeped through the blanket and onto his shirt.

“汚い! (kitanai - disgusting) He exclaimed, pulling his shirt away from his skin. He glared at the repulsive monster as it munched away on the lettuce, utterly oblivious to the torment it had inflicted on its temporary caregiver. “As soon as I am done with you, little spawn of filth, I am going to shower for a full hour straight.” He tried to wipe off the slime but only succeeded in spreading it around. He gave a dramatic sigh. “Will this shirt ever come clean? This was an h.Naoto limited edition you know.” He scolded the worm as if it could understand his despair. As it spat out another trail of slime he rolled his eyes. "Namekujira shall be your name, you overgrown slug."

Despite the fact that his first year, Jack had signed up for and completed every errand he had been able to, his second year was much busier for him as a student. As a result, he wasn't able to spare as much thought for completing errands as he had previously and it had been a long while since he'd tried signing up for one. When he noticed that one of the few Hufflepuffs he could tolerate, though - Kazuo Shimada - had planned to do one of the errands, Jack found he couldn't pass up the opportunity.

The errand had mentioned essentially babysitting a flobberworm for a day. He just couldn't resist the idea of being able to see the supercilious Japanese pureblood being forced to baby a slime-oozing worm. Thus, he made plans with Kazuo to accompany him and his worm with his own so as to set up 'playdates' with the little critters if they needed to.

In all honesty, Jack was no more fond of the flobberworms than Kazuo was. However, he doubted he found them more distasteful. Truthfully, the red-headed Slytherin boy wasn't particularly fond of animals at all. He still wasn't sure why Kazuo had decided to join a Magical Creatures club of all things, but to each their own, he supposed. Jack, on the other hand, much preferred to learn more about people like Kazuo than any non-sentient creature, magical or not.

Jake might have liked the errand. Perhaps that was why Jake and Kazuo were in the same house and even the same dorm. Their dorm, Jack had heard, was even named after the famous magizoologist, Newt Scamander. But Jack couldn't playfully tease and taunt Jake like he could Kazuo; at least not without having to worry about if the sensitive badger would understand or get hurt feelings or not. This chance to mess with Kazuo alone was one Jack would relish.

"Shimatta?" he spoke up once he'd gotten his critter, hurrying toward the classroom they had agreed to meet at. He knew full well he wasn't pronouncing Kazuo's surname correctly, but he wasn't about to fix his pronunciation, either. As Jack ran into the room, though, he failed to look down to see the trail of slime left behind by the flobberworm Kazuo had left on the ground.

"ShimattaaaaAAAHHHHAAA!!"

THUD.

SPLAT!

The Welsh boy landed hard on his butt in the slime, his momentum carrying him straight toward Kazuo as if to bowl him and his flobberworm charge over. His own worm flew from his grip into the air only to land a few second later on his head with a sickening splat of secretion.

He hadn’t given much thought to the floor or what the worm would do to it once he had set it free. He was far too preoccupied with what it had done to his shirt - something of significantly more value to him than the classroom’s floor. So he hadn’t given much thought to what could happen if the worm was left to its own slobbery devices; it was safe to assume the slime factory would continue to spread its gooey mess everywhere.

He turned toward the door as he heard Jack’s voice, calling to him. His eyes narrowed in irritation at the way Burnett continued to mispronounce it. Why the other boy found it so amusing was beyond him, though it was about to provide amusement of an entirely different kind as Jack sailed into the room, worm in arms, only to step directly into a slimy trail left by his own Namekujira. The hollering of his not-name turning into what could only be a cry of panic as Jack’s feet slid out from under him, sending him to the floor in a gloriously loud squelching sound. The irritation he had been feeling about his filthy charge vanished, replaced by a bubbling of laughter as he took several quick steps back to avoid Jack’s crash course. The last thing he wanted was more contact with slime.

“Shimatta indeed,” Kazuo agreed with a grin. “Oh! Is your slug okay?” He turned to Jack’s worm where it had landed, seemingly unfazed by its sudden flight. “Hardy things, aren’t they?” He prodded it gently with a toe, watching it spit out another round of goop. Or was that spit? He honestly had no idea which end was which. Once assured that the worm hadn’t been harmed, he turned back to Jack and offered him a hand. “I admit, I’m a bit surprised you agreed to do this, Kitsu-kun.”

Shimatta (しまった ) is translated as "Oops!" or "Oh dear!", a casual phrase used when someone did something they didn't mean to or failed to do something they were supposed to.
