Another Witch In the Family
POV: Dorothy Jennene Rod
Date: March 30th, 2021
Location: Merthyr Tydfil, WalesHer older sister, Adlai, had only been home for two whole days from her highly secretive boarding school and her mother and father had already found a million ways to make everything about her. Johanna, her younger sister, wasn't helping either with her constant questions about what Adlai was studying, if she had made any new friends, and when she'd be able to come home next.
Ridiculous, utterly ridiculous. - Dorothy thought as she sat at the dinner table and listened to her mother fawn over her sister. Adlai wasn't the brightest in the bunch when it came to anything but astronomy so Dorothy couldn't wrap her head around how her nit-wit of an older sister got into a boarding school which was supposedly for intelligent young women.
What only made matters worse was that their great aunt, Margret-Viktoria, seemed to have taken a liking to Adlai as well. It didn't take Dorothy long to realize that great aunt Margret came around a lot more whenever Adlai was home, and always asked about Adlai whenever she was away at school. On the other hand great aunt Margret virtually ignored Dorothy and Johanna to an impressive extent. As to why? Dorothy couldn't tell yet.
However, those weren't the only strange things Dorothy had been noticing lately. A few days ago she had been taking a bath when she went to reach for the soap, which laid on the rim of the tub, it slid across the rim before she was given the chance to touch it. Dorothy shrugged it off, assuming it must have had something to do with the angle of which their house sat on and the amount water that had found its way onto the rim.
Nonetheless, the other day when she was bringing laundry inside from being dried she had slid on a small patch of ice that had yet to melt. Though she was able to catch herself, she had let go of the laundry basket. To her surprise when she went to look for a disaster made up of laundry strewn about the back porch, she instead saw a completely full laundry basket that levitated just an inch above the ground. Before Dorothy could reach out and grab it, the basket fell with a small thud, all of its garments still inside.
Something was off indeed. Who to talk to about it, Dorothy didn't know. She was sure her parents would find her insane while her sisters would think she was making up stories, her friends from school probably would think the same as well. Before she could hurt herself by thinking any longer there was a knock at the front door. Who would be visiting them at supper time? -She thought, finding the notion of it horribly rude.
Upon the second knock on the door her Father stood from his seat and went to open the door. At that very moment the shrill, raspy voice of great aunt Margret boomed in the entry way.
Ah, of course -Dorothy inquired, as great aunt Margret hadn't visited them yet within Adlai's arrival.
"Jón, my nephew, how good it is to see you again. You know you really should let me put up some wards in your home, I shouldn't be able to walk in so easily..." Margret said half-heartedly, brushing her nephew, and Dorothy's father aside as she squeezed her way out of the entry way and into the dinning room. "Ah there she is, our prized pupil!" She exclaimed spreading out her crow wing like arms towards the eldest of the three girls that sat side by side.
"Hello aunt Margret!" Dorothy chimed in. "Ah...yes, you too..."
It wasn't like Dorothy didn't expect that reaction, it had always been like that between them since day one. She had seen the photographs of their great aunt forcibly holding them when they were infants looking absolutely mortified. After being brushed off, in a much harsher manner than her father Dorothy watched as pleasantries were exchanged between the two of them, and as Margret pulled up a chair and made herself comfortable.
Whilst Margret went on and on about her school days Dorothy pondered on what Margret could have meant by wards when she entered their home just a moment ago. Wards...why did such a word feel so distantly familiar? Perhaps she had read it in a book before or heard in on the television or one of her mothers radio shows? She wasn't sure...
Pushing the thought to the back of her mind the evening continued to progress, still centered around Adlai. As time went by Dorothy began to grow tired, Johanna did not however, instead she grew more energetic and began to kick one of the legs of Dorothy's chair.
"Jo, please stop." Dorothy yawned.
Johanna continued.
"Jo, stop."
Johanna continued.
"Jo..."
Johanna continued.
"Johanna!" She shouted, the lights in the house began to flicker before going out entirely. Another strange thing for Dorothy to add to her list, however what was to follow would be even stranger.
"Well, well, well..." Margret started her brown eyes having an amber like glow in the darkness of the dinning room. "Seems we have another witch in the family."
Witch?
