Christmas Night
Cork, Ireland

Another holiday come and gone.

Illowy had spend the last few days with her auntie, uncle and Ky, which proved to be something of a relief to not have to be home. In true fashion, Auntie Kat had truly 'decked the halls'. Gaudy, glowing Christmas tree and garlands galore. Everything seemed to be touched with the spirit of the season. In a way, Illowy could appreciate that; a glimpse and effort at achieving normality in the family. Trying to keep alive the same traditions that had been going since before her and Ky were even born, she was sure. It all felt so fake now, even if she couldn't help but humor her aunt and play along. Even on Christmas Eve, pretending like she wasn't in agonizing pain from her own curse and counting the minutes until she was able to get up in the morning to have her bandaid of a potion that would just leave her exhusted and tense the rest of the day. And then there was Ky who never liked the holidays in any respect, especially not with what had happened at school this year. Everything that had happened this year hardly felt worth a celebration and Illowy had just wanted it over, overshadowing the good things that had happened.

At least now it was finally over. Christmas dinner had been eaten, presents unwrapped, gingerbread towns picked clean over of their candy and frosted bits. Everyone had retreated into their rooms to settle in for the night; though Illowy wasn't expecting to get much sleep. Instead, she sat on her bed, scribbling away in her journal by the lamplight as the wall clock ticked on into the wee hours of the morning. A fresh blanket of snow insulated nearly any sound that might try to awaken the sleeping household.

Nearly.

Her thoughts were pulled away when a flutter came at her window, and looking up, an owl was hovering, waiting to be let in as the young witch approached the window and lifted it open, the cool air wrapping itself around her in an embrace. The bird landed on her sill without hesitation, presenting a little note in its beak. The moment she relieved him of his parcel, the creature took flight again. Turning over the envelope, Illowy quickly recognize the familiar black wax seal of a waxing moon and peaking trees. Another letter from her father. A feeling of dread filled the pit of her stomach. Why had she convinced herself that maybe for once, just once, she wouldn't hear from him? This wasn't the first letter she'd received from her father since the start of this school year. Not even close. She'd received at least two a month congratulating her on her school successes, asking about her grades, or school events, begging her to reply back; though she'd never had.

Swallowing hard, she carefully broke the seal and read the short, simple contents:
My Illowy,
Come here.
~D.F
It felt like a steal cloth wrapped itself around her pounding heart as she leaned slightly out from her window, loose curls falling over her shoulder. Against the painted white background, it wasn't hard for her pale eyes to catch glimpse of the black figure standing in contracts a few years out from the tree line in the back yard.

What was he doing here?? Of all places! It had been nearly a year since the last time she'd seen him. However that had been out in town, back home in Dublin. Now he was standing in her cousin's back yard... and she'd yet to even tell him about the first instance.

Swallowing hard, the girl moved as quickly and quietly as she could, paying mind to grab her wand and holster and secure it around her waist as she slipped downstairs. Shoving her feet in her boots and pulling her heavy cloak around her shoulders as she crept out the backdoor. The last thing she needed was to wake the whole house and explain why her father was out there. As she moved through the shallow snow, she wondered if she was making a mistake. If she should have woken up her aunt and uncle... it was too late now though.

He looked just as she recalled from the year prior. Tall and looming, his dark curls, bright hazel eyes flecked with blue and gold, the unmistakable pair of scars that trails down and across his right cheek. Desmond Fillin. In all his infamous glory.

The mad stood there quietly as she approached, studying her. As she came closer, she noticed his brow furrow and when she was close enough, he chucked his knuckle beneath her chin, turning her face slightly to better see the ichor scarring along her cheek, "How did this happen?" he questioned before taking a couple sharp sniffs of the cold air, akin to Ky the first time she'd seen him after the attack on Slytherin "You smell like decay. You're cursed?"

Illowy pulled away, taking a step back out of arm's reach, "It doesn't matter. I'm fine." something of a lie, but he didn't need to know that, "What the bloody hell do you think yer doin' here?" she demanded, trying to keep her voice down, "After everything you've done, you think you can just come here? Leave." she spoke firmly.

The man simply stood there, studying here. He smiled softly to himself and gave a nod towards her necklace, "I see you're wearing my locket." he mused before holding his hands behind his back, as though he were some gentleman, "Illowy, I understand how you must feel. You're lost and confused and scared. You have so much going on, and it much be hard to deal with when you're so young." he shifted a bit, then started circling here, like an animal sizing up it's prey, "Your mother is hardly around, hanging out with your little friends, you're working so hard at school trying to understand things beyond your years... trying to save your cousin. But, my dear, you're so busy trying to save everyone, whose going to save you?"

Illowy tensed, turning in circles to always keep herself facing him. Was he threatening her? "I don't need anyone to save me. I'm a Magnard."

He chuckled, "You're a Fillin. That's who you were born to be. Even you're mother understood that after what you did to that little boy when your magic came in. Keeping you hidden away so you wouldn't hurt anyone else. But that hasn't stopped you has it? You may be the spitting image of Rose, but we're more alike then you think. You love that power of knocking someone down a peg, of having someone underestimate your strength just so you can beat them into the ground. You like intimidating people." he ceased circling her, "You may be a witch, but there's a little bit of wolf in you too, my dear. You are your father's daughter. And Fillins, we depend on no one but ourselves, because everyone will leave you eventually. As you grow more powerful, and remind her more of me, your mother will pull further and further away. When your family realizes you've been seeing me, speaking to me, do you think they'll want you here? Especially Kyle when he realizes who you really are." Desmond smiled handsomely as he approached his daughter again, "I'd never abandon you though. I love you. I always have. And I've always wanted to be in your life, no matter what you've done. I know your potential, my sweet Lily. And you'll always be able reach me if you need me." The girl stayed quiet as her father planted the seeds in her mind, trying to will away his ability to get to her.

"I won't let you be alone. And when you're ready, I'll be waiting for you to come home to me." with one last smile, he pushed a snow kissed tress of hair behind her ear before appariting into thin air, leaving her alone. The moment he was gone, she released a breath she hadn't realized she'd been holding. Her mind was already swirling with his words, going over the darker deeds and aspects of herself, wondering if they were really as alike as he was suggesting. Even though she tried to be good, caring, protective... was she really just trying to compensate for a truer, dark nature?

Wrapping her arms around herself beneath her winter cloak, the girl turned, shakily making her way back towards the house, pale eyes cast down as she retraced her previous footprints in the snow.

I was told I was dangerous. When I asked why, they said, "Because you don't need anyone." That's when I smiled.

Kyle hated Christmas. He hated just about every holiday if he really thought about it. But Christmas was up there with halloween. Everything was so bright, and cheery and bloody Fake. Peace on earth and good will towards men? Hardly. It was a time of year for people to pretend they werent piles of shite for every other day of the year and to get into endless competitions about who loved who more by the size of the gift or who was the better person by the amount they donated to charities. The whole thing was just a sugary, gaudy, overly decorated mess and he couldn't stand it. His mother however...

Every surface was decorated, garland and lights and trinkets and stockings and this and that all over the place! it made him sick. But, at his fathers request he smiled and played nice and joined in on certain things just to make his mother happy. The only good thing about it all was the sweets. It was his mother's baking that left him softer than he would be if he only ate meat and potatoes like he probably should but well...he had a soft spot for sweets.

Thankfully, he did not have to endure this personal hell alone. His cousin Illowy was there and she for the most part shared his disdain for the Christmas spirit and their shared eye rolls or mild mocking was enough to help him make it through the days. Besides, having Illowy here meant his parents couldn't focus on him as much and any chance to get out of the spot light he relished.

Eventually the Christmas dinner was done, every gift opened and treat eaten and everyone had made their way to their rooms to sleep. Kyle however...couldnt sleep. He was filled both bad memories of the year so far, and the eternal dread of what lay in store for him next. When was he due to be attacked again, or the next attempt to turn him into a mindless beast. Could he resist next time? would he want to? what does the next full moon hold for him. After being unable to sleep for awhile he got to his feet and started pacing back and forth when he suddenly saw movement out of the corner of his eye. Someone in dark clothing standing out amidst the snow in the back yard and...Illowy?

He quickly tripped over himself as he moved to get slip his boots on and grab his leather jacket, feeling the leather on his bare skin and clashing some with his yellow and green kestral pajama pants. He rushed downstairs.

Kyle opened the back door and stepped outside, feeling a gust of cold air and Illowy stood there alone hugging herself. He opened his mouth to say something, but then a scent caught his attention. It was a smell he knew well as it was permanently burned into his mind with a strong surge of familiarity. It was the smell of someone who shared his curse. His hands closed tightly into fists and a dark, angry expression came over him. Why was a werewolf here...and why were they talking to Illowy?

His voice would break the silence as she started to silently walk back towards the house with her eyes cast towards the ground.

"Magpie...Who the fuck was that?"

Illowy mentally mauled over her father's words as she wandered back through the snow. Was he just trying to get in her head, or was he actually trying to look out for his little girl? In retrospect, she knew she didn't exactly have the best reputation for friendliness. She's scared a boy to nearly peeing himself when she threatened to use him for Flippendo practice. She kept getting into fights with people trying to bully her. She loved the more violent side of dueling, knocking people out and establishing her dominance over the situation, making them understand that she was a force to be reckoned with. Illowy loved the exhilaration of being hit with a spell, no matter how it might hurt or knock the wind out of her; it awoke something in her that made her want to hit back even harder... she loved how she could scare or intimidate people with just one pale gaze.

What if she did have a dark nature? What if her attempts to keep the people she cared about safe, was just a rouse, even from herself?

The girl was pulled from her thoughts when Kyle's voice broke the snow pillowed silence. Her eyes shot up towards him, stunned that he was there. How long had he been standing there? Clearly long enough to have seen that she hadn't been alone... which quickly killed the hope that maybe this had all been some sort of very bad dream.

Illowy opened her mouth as though to speak, then closed it again, trying to think of what to say and trying to force away tears to hide how visibly shaken up she was that her father had even found her here in the first place. Now she feared his prediction was going to come true, and the domino effect of people leaving her would start tonight. It was much easier to convince one's self that the 'don't ask, don't tell' policy isn't lying. Before, she'd simply not told Kyle; which was easy because they'd both been mostly avoiding each other when the incident last year had originally happened; and she wasn't sure how to talk about it in the first place. That wasn't an option now though. She couldn't lie right to Ky's face, even if she wanted to.

As she approached, Illowy tried to gather her thoughts, desperate to come up with something to properly explain. Nothing good came to mind as she reached him. Instead, all she offered was a weak shrug as she chewed her lip, still fighting against misting eyes and trying to steady herself from trembling so hard, “That... was my da.” She confessed and in small voice, unable to even bring herself to look her beloved cousin in the eye.

I was told I was dangerous. When I asked why, they said, "Because you don't need anyone." That's when I smiled.

"That...was my da"

The words, simple as they were hit Kyle like a truck. He didn't know much about her father, just that he wasn't around. Wasn't a great guy. But he smelled the stench of werewolf in the air and he felt sick to his stomach. Something about the scent that lingered bothered him, deep down in the back of his mind. He dind't know why but something about this, about her dad being here bothered him. Why skulk by in the night? in secret? Well the answer was obvious...because he was a monster. What troubled him the most though was how could Illowy have two family members who were werewolves...especially two family members who had never even really met.

His eyes narrowed and his hands closed tighter into fists "What that was, was damn Werewolf. Why are you meeting monsters in secret in the middle of the night? Alone? What if he hurt you?" a flash of anger crosses his face and he speaks again, the rage clearly crowing in his voice "Did he hurt you? have you been bit? scratched? I fuckin' rip his head off!" a snarl punctuates his sentence, and the growing volume of his words as he pushes past Illowy and to the place in the snow the man, her Da, was standing just moments earlier. The smell lingered, he could probably track him down. In wolf form the older man would dominate the boy, but in their human form Kyle felt the playing field would be more even. Especially if he grabbed his beater bat from upstairs

He turned back to face his cousin, he was breathing faster as his fight or flight response was being triggered and he was sitting firmly in the fight camp. "He ever lays a claw on you I swear to christ Ill kill him. What did he want? why was he here? how long as he been sniffing around you?"

Illowy couldn’t be sure how much Kyle knew about her father. It seemed to be one of those topics that also fell under the category of "don't ask, don't tell". Her whole life her mother behaved as if he never even existed; and for so many years, Illowy never questioned it. Somehow it didn't feel like her business to ask; and Illowy was becoming more and more aware as she got older that she was blindly in compliance with what she perceived would have been her mother's wishes. Now though, her faith in her own mother was shaken.

When her father had attacked the family, the cousins had been so young, five years old at the most, and Ky hadn’t even been there during the event. Her mother had slowly conditioned her into believing the memory of that night was just a terrible, reoccurring nightmare; but there was no hiding the truth about it now. She assumed her aunt and uncle never told Kyle, not wanting to scare him, but she didn’t know. Desmond’s curse however, that certainly had been kept deliberately from the children.
"What that was, was damn Werewolf. Why are you meeting monsters in secret in the middle of the night? Alone? What if he hurt you?"
Illowy was long past the point where her cousin's anger could drive her to flinch. She simply stated softly, "I know what he is..." would that shock him? Only if he didn't know about the attack now nearly a decade ago. After all, what were the odds that she'd know two werewolves, much less be related to them? "No. I've not been scratched or bit. If I had, you'd know." she assured.

Illowy didn't like to think her father would ever purposefully infect her... but it wasn't unheard of for some werewolves to go about with that exact intention. Given how little she really knew about her father, she shouldn't be so naive to give him the benefit of the doubt.

As the lad pushed passed her, Illowy trailed after him to where she'd stood with her father. The imprints of her turning in place, her father's larger ones circling her like a predator sizing up its prey. An almost painful allusion to the night Duke had died; Kyle circling her, growling and feigning a lunge to get a flinch out of her, trying to scare her. In a way, her father had done the same thing, but with words, using her own insecurities and fears now to scare her instead.

Ky was getting worked up as he turned to her once more, puffs of hot hair escaping his lips as he promised avengence in her name if her father hurt her; then came all the harder questions.
"What did he want? why was he here? how long as he been sniffing around you?"
The snake shifted uncomfortably where she stood, the snow's insulation making the moment of silence between them seem louder then usual as she tried to think of the proper place to start, "Honestly, I don't know how long he's been keeping tabs on me. I guess sometime after he got out of Azkaban." she began with a helpless shrug.

For a moment, Illowy looked back towards the house, trying to make sure everything was still silent inside before looking back to her cousin, "He started sending me letters when we got back to Hogwarts for second year, but I didn't figure out who he was until Christmas break. I was snooping through Mum's files and... I found everything. Pictures, letters, newspaper clippings, all kinds of documents... my last name wasn't even originally Magnard. She had our names changed after he went to prison." the story she'd been festering on for a year now fell out of her like word vomit. Once more she shifted in the snow as she exhaled a heavy breath in a long puff, "After Christmas... he found me cutting through the park on my way home. I don't know how he found me, or tracked me or whatever, but he wanted to talk to me and... I got scared and ran home." since then, she hadn't dared go anywhere alone when she was home in Dublin; but maybe it didn't matter where she went anymore. "This is the first time he's ever come to somewhere I'm staying though. I thought, if I ignored him, he'd just... go away. Which in retrospect was really stupid." she trailed off, her voice hitching slightly, threating to give way to tears and expose actual fear.

Pale eyes fell away from Kyle to gaze off towards the woods, pressing her lips in a tight line for a moment, “He... he said a lot of stuff, about Mum and himself and me..." not completely truth, but it scared it scared her to confess aloud that he'd implied everyone would be driven away by her inherent darkness, "Before he left, he said he was waiting for me to come home to him."

I was told I was dangerous. When I asked why, they said, "Because you don't need anyone." That's when I smiled.

a fear gripped Kyle as he listened to her speak. Not a fear for himself but for her. Kyle had almost killed Illowy before during a full moon, and she had witnessed what he did to Duke. She knew what his kind were capable of. Worse than that, she knew the kind of horror he lived in, the way he suffered and how the curse broke and twisted his body every month. When Kyle was cursed he had no idea what was coming, each new experience was a lesson on what was to come for the rest of his life. Illowy however, she knew everything that would come, would happen, if she was cursed and yet she still allowed her father to sniff around, or even if it was against her will she kept it a secret. Knowing what he could do to her.

Kyle closed his eyes and took a deep breath, rubbing his face and lingering a moment on his scar. "Magpie, You know words and feelin's and emotions and shite aren't what im good at. I bash things, ruin things, and make a general mess a things. thats my strengths. But, I always got your back. All the time, no matter what. Spiders, or class mates, or that gobshite what calls himself yer da." he points out to the forest "You can't trust him. My folks mean well but they will treat us both like glass and yer ma well...theres a reason you are here instead of home. " he jabs his own finger into his chest. But, I always got her back. You can trust me, you can count on me. Nothing and noone is ever gonna hurt you, not if I have anything to say about it. Yeah?"

Kyle stepped forward and pulled his cousin into a Big hug "I cant look out for you if you keep me in the dark. knock that shite off...yeah?" he tried to hide the fear in his voice, but if anyone could pick up on it Illowy was the one who could.

Illowy's eyes drew back to Kyle as he spoke. Sensibly, she knew he was right. Her father wasn't someone she should trust; and she didn't. She trusted him about as far as she could throw him; but he knew things about her she hadn't dared to say out loud, he knew where to pinpoint her fears and insecurities without her saying a word to him. Did he know because he was watching her? Or because he knew how she felt from his own experiences? She couldn't be sure, but either way didn't settle well if it was going to manifest into situations like tonight.

At the very least though, she still had her cousin. In a world were people were either scared of her or thought she might shatter like glass on stone, Ky was at least a taste of normality. Someone she could trust to look out for her like she did for him, and treat her like everything was normal again. Part of her felt silly now for hiding the situation for so long in the childish hopes it would just go away if she let it be for long enough. After tonight, however, she had the sinking feeling this wasn't going to be the last time she heard from or saw her father. Even if she did decide to tell the rest of their family, what could they do? There was no proof he was doing anything malicious to her, no evidence of malintent in his letters, he'd never harmed her, so what could they even hope to do about it?

As Kyled pulled her in for her hug, the girl wrapped her arms around his waist and hid her face in his shoulder, nodding fainting in agreement to stop hiding things. Illowy knew him well enough to know the shift in his tone, ever slight with him trying to hide it, but he was scared for her. Which was fair. He knew what would happen if they came to share the same curse. She couldn't fault him for wanting to protect her from that; she'd be the same way if roles were reversed. Truthfully, she wasn't sure if she'd be strong enough to handle it as objectively well as he had.

But what if her father was right? What if one day, even Ky left her behind because she was as dark as her father insinuated? What if one day the line was crossed and there was do turning back...then she'd be left alone.

Such thoughts swirling in her mind made her hold her cousin a little tighter, "He said I'm like him..." she muttered into his shoulder, "that I'm dark by nature, and I'll wind up losing everyone in the end because of it." Illowy swallowed hard, still trying to fight away any tears threatening to fall.

I was told I was dangerous. When I asked why, they said, "Because you don't need anyone." That's when I smiled.

Kyle pulled back from the hug, holding onto the tops of Illowys arms and looked her deep in the eyes. "You are not dark by nature. Thought you were supposed to be the smart one" he shakes his head and lets his hands drop to hang at his sides, the cold winter wind blowing his messy hair around wildly. "Yer the smart one. The good one. Always have been. I am the one with the darkness. This rage I have, The hate, fuck even my blood is just bad thanks to this curse. But not you. You are a bright light, so any darkness you think you see is just the shadows cast by that light. But ya know what? Shadows aint real"

Kyle ran a hand through his hair, the useless habit even more so outside with the wind blowing every which way like it would. He hated seeing his cousin upset like this, worried like this. He knew whose fault it was too. her Da. Whoever he was, whatever his plans were they were no good and Kyle wasnt going to let him get inside Illowys head. Not while he was around to do or say anything about it.

He then realized some shivering or shaking from Illowy. Emotions or just the cold? hard to tell. The boy always was hot these days. a side effect of his cursed blood perhaps? or maybe he took "hot blooded youth" a tad too literally. He put a hand on Illowy's shoulder to guide her inside "Come on, gonna catch yer death out here. s'freezing"

once back inside Kyle looked upstairs, as if he could see through the floor towards his parents room. when he spoke again he did so quietly "Far as the parents go. this night never happened, yeah? but no more secrets. from either of us. I cant have your back if you keep me in the dark, and you cant keep me from being a damned idiot if I keep you in the dark"

Illowy gazed up at him through nervous eyes as her cousin pulled away and held her by the arms. He seemed so confident in his words... but she wasn't sure she quite believed him. This was the first time she'd questioned her true nature. Hell, she'd had an entire mental breakdown over it during her second year; But of course he would have such confidence in her. She was the smart one, she was the sensible one, she was the voice of reason. That had always been her role. So how could he know all the terrible things she'd done?

He wasn't there for the fights where she didn't hold back. Nor when she'd nearly made a boy pee himself when she threatened to use him for target practice, and then scared the wits out of him when she cast flippendo at just the right angle to barely miss him. He didn't see her use the slug vomiting curse on a group of boys. He hadn't witnessed when her powers first came in and manifested in throwing another child off the top of jungle gym like a ragdoll. There were a lot of things he didn't know that made her question if he ought to be that confident in her.

Sure, she was the smart one. She'd memorized all the rules before figuring out how to break them without getting caught. Without even trying to, without a proper reason to. She didn't think about it, she just did it.

Kyle wasn't like that. He was angry and impulsive, but not without reason, "Yer curse doesn't make you dark, Ky. Yer a lot of things, but dark isn't one of them." she offered a small smile, "Yer a light to me. I'd be stumbling around in the dark if I didn't have you." and she meant that. If there was one consistency in her life right now, one thing she could depend on, it was him.

As he rested a hand on her trembling should, she kept close and let him guide her back inside. The pair seemed to slip back in unnoticed by Kate and Sean thankfully, Kyle seeming to be trying to use his x-ray vision to confirm before he whispered once more. Illowy nodded softly, "We both know you'll be an idiot whether I know what's going on with you or not." she teased quietly, trying to lighten herself up, "I'll let ye know if he tries to contact me again, or if anything else weird happens." she promised.

I was told I was dangerous. When I asked why, they said, "Because you don't need anyone." That's when I smiled.
