Burned Scones
Alan was not the best at baking but he clearly had fun doing so. But he had received a letter while he was in New Romney with his parents, in their holiday house at the beach and he would have to try. It could not be that difficult right? A small grin would form on his lip as he was scouting the kitchen for any recipe he could find until he would be met with something that would allow him to make scones and he loved scones so why would he not try to make them or at least do a sorry attempt and fail to do so? A chuckle left his lips as he began to look around the whole kitchen for some kind of ingredients. His parents were currently out of the house so he was on his own; a promise for disaster for sure. After scanning the recipe lazily the near fourth year would grab a bag of all purpose flour and baking powder which had been quite tricky to find. Who knew that baking powder came in such small little bags? He shook his head slightly as he began to gather everything else that he would be needing for this, his excitement rising like the dough would in the oven. He would grab a big bowl and a scale so that he could weight the ingredients. Surely it would not be too bad if he was not following the instructions exactly, right? A bit more flour and sugar wouldn't hurt the scones, right?
By the time the fourth year had mixed everything together it had caused quite a chaos in the kitchen. Flour and dough clung to the surfaces of the in built kitchen and the boy's face had seen a bit of the white flour as well but he really could be bothered less by it. By the end it would just take a swish of his parent's wands and the mess would be cleaned right up, right? Alan was a little scared of the oven but that could not go wrong, right? With that he put the scones inside of the oven, not waiting for the dough to rise as he was impatient enough as it was and just put it on the right amount of degrees. For now it meant to simply wait for the time to pass.
The boy would quickly wash his hands and sit downs at the kitchen counter, swing his legs slightly as he began to flip through the pages of the recipe book, his mouth watering at some of the pictures it provided. Some of it just sounded too good to be true, like a chocolate cake with a molten center. Alan clearly had to eat such a thing at one point and perhaps if he asked his mother often enough than she could make something like that at one point. If not he would just have to ask a couple more times until she finally gave in. After a couple of minutes a sigh left his lips as he was growing restless. He really did not want to wait much longer anymore and wanted the time to be over. Occasionally he would take a look inside of the oven to see if perhaps the food could be done quicker. But then he had a great idea. If he would just turn up the heat of the oven then it would be faster at baking the scones! With that amazing idea the fourth year began to fiddle at the oven and turn up the heat enough for it to be done in a few minutes and sat in front of the oven with his legs crossed; humming a small melody as he did so. As the little clock rang he would jump up from his sitting position and pull open the door of the oven and he was instantly met with a wave of smoke and heat that threw him into a fit of coughs. Taking a pair of oven mits he waved them through the smoke to make it disappear and with hopeful eyes took a look at the scones and frowned slightly. He had expected them to look like the ones on the picture but those seemed to look a little burned on the edges. But he was quite sure that they would still taste amazing!
He took out the tray from the oven and turned off the heat and placed the tray onto the counter. Now he would only have to wait for it to cool down a little and he was waiting in front of the scones waiting for that to happen. As soon as they weren't smoking anymore the fourth year took one of them and quickly pulled back his hand with a yelp. It still seemed to be quite hot so yet again the fourth year would wait a bit. In the end he had to find out that they weren't as good as he thought they would be but for him they still tasted amazing as it was the first time he actually made scones so he was quite proud with the results. The fourth year was happy and would offer his parents some as they came back home in the late evening and his mother was a little surprised until he told her about the letter from school and while she was not happy about the way the kitchen looked he was happy that Alan had apparently taken some interest in making some baked goods. The fourth year was quite sure that perhaps he would be able to make something else but to be fair he prefered to just have the food as making it simply took away too much time and by the time you get to eat you were basically starved to death or so. And on top of that his parents had him clean the utensils he used to make the dough so this was even worse because cleaning dishes was about the worst thing to do after making food! Alan shook his head in frustration as he began to scrub the bowl that had sticky dough all over it. Who invented cleaning dishes?
However it was still clear. These certainly weren't the best scones, they tasted mostly like flour but with a lot of jam they were edible and could actually be called tasty. Satisfied with that Alan would send back an owl and a small package with the scones and a jar with homemade strawberry jam from his mother.
