Finished Dormant Solo

A child, a child on its mother's lap was a familiar image at Vanes Manor in the early afternoons and this day was not unlike the others. The young toddler was busy putting pieces of a safari jumble puzzle into place that depicted various animals of the non magical world. Every now and then the boy would hold up a piece of carved wood asking the mother what exactly it was portraying as his knowledge about the mundane world was quite limited. Never had he actually left his home before, not further than a gaze through the window had he discovered the world beyond the front door. Alan Vanes was sitting there with light blue hair sticking out in each possible direction, tongue sticking out between his lips in concentration as he focused on his masterpiece. Meanwhile his mother was crouched over a bunch of document files and folders, scribbling down something with a quill, filing the documents, sorting and rearranging them, while also having to answer a bunch of questions from the little man that couldn't be stopped from demanding the blonde woman's attention. In concern she would watch her son's hair and appearance change in color and shape every now and then; long having given up that this was but a temporary gene that would go dormant soon enough. It would have made things certainly easier on her and her partner, if they had at least someone they could turn to about these matters, it might have helped a lot but they were on their own and whatever they did was in Alan's best even if it meant that he would not be able to have a normal childhood; confined in what was the manor and the manor alone.

It wasn't until the heavy sound of the doorknocker echoed throughout the house, and the young boy scrambled from the lap in order to run and greet the new arrival, that life returned into the manor. The pitter-patter of small of small feet running through the manor, only dampened by the slippers between the steps and tiles, echoed through the corridor. The woman soon followed with a sigh after capping the inkwell that the young boy nearly knocked over in his excitement, as she made her way to collect her runaway son. She caught sight of the neon orange hair that seemed to illuminate in a soft glow, making the woman doubt once again how all of this could have been possible. She had heard of it, she knew it was a gene carried in her own families genetics even, but she had never been prepared to see it appear in her own son and neither was the person she loved. Unsightly was the way Alan's shirt would dent at his back, which was new; yet another transformation perhaps? It was obvious and impossible to hide and the exact reason why the times her husband and her got to go out had limited drastically ever since their child was born. It would never actually come to her mind to blame her son for it, she loved the little beast with every fiber of her being and so did her significant other, but the circumstances could definitely put a strain on them from times.

Aidan, who was standing in the doorways raised his gaze pointedly, finding the one of Liv's who returned it earnestly, before stepping forward to greet the man who had been tackled into a hug. "Alan, dear... what happened with your back sweetie?, she asked the child who froze and turned and twisted his neck to catch sight of what his mother was talking about. "Wings, momma, like a bird, flap flap-" the toddler would explain solemnly, accentuating it by making a flapping up and down motion with his arm timed perfectly with the wings attached to his back that would flutter against his robes in an awkward manner. The young child would cringe and step back from his father as he tried to get his emotions in check. "Has this happened before?, the deep voice of his father resonated through the manor, in its usual calm manner. The toddler was a bit confused with the question raising his thumb to his lips to nibble on it gently as he thought of the answer. Was this important? Apparently it was, since his parents kept staring quietly so the young boy did his best to remember, scrunching up his face as his eyes flickered in different colors as the wings seemed to shrink away with the short-lived excitement he had felt when his father had returned home after a long day at work. Finally the boy nodded, slowly as his eyes settled for a color portraying his insecurity about the whole questionnaire; had he done something wrong?

"What does it mean, little snake?", his mother would coax him, gently ruffling his hair when he noticed the pure worry. An open book, in the most obvious definition and without any control above it. How to control it? No clue, the parents had no idea as they had no one they could possibly ask for advice. They were on their own in the matter. Alan was on his own, with the little support his parents could offer. Stumbling back from his parents the child shook its head, he was done with this, done with the questions. How was he supposed to know? It just happened! His eyes narrowed as he pushed through his parents, running through the floor as he kicked off the stuffed slippers in his run as they threatened to make him slip on the marble tiled floor, before pushing through the door at the end of the hallway. He could hear his parents shout, calling out his name but in this moment he didn't care, he wanted to be left alone he wanted to do this this without being asked questions. Was he that bad? Was he not normal? He wouldn't know. His parents barely let him meet anyone at all!

A storm shook in the child's eyes as he reached the forbidden outdoors, in the safety of the garden that he wasn't allowed to enter without a hood. Now he wasn't wearing one, his sight was not constricted for once as his feet sunk into the meadow and soil as he ran towards the bushes and flower beds, crouching down behind one of them. Making himself small and invisible, why couldn't this work, if everything else did? Why was he never able to do what he wanted, his body not listening? Was there an answer? Did he need one? He just wanted to be him and as he sat there, the world around him got quiet for a moment. Doubts and worries washed away in his small hide out and for once he could be him. Himself without having to answer any questions and the little boy crumpled, slumping down as his worries dissipated into thin air. Soil beneath his feet and leaves in his back he could be just himself until his parents would find him. It certainly would not be a difficult task for them, so he would enjoy the time he got until he would be scolded again.
